USB will only charge, no data connection - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

So I got a new Galaxy Note with a busted screen, and I combined the two (my no audio one) to make a working phone. Now the new Frankenstein phone has audio, the screen is perfect, and all is good. Except I can't connect it with USB to my computer. It charges over USB, but when I connect to my computer I get an error that the USB device has malfunctioned. I swapped the USB board with the spare I had, but it doesn't work still. I've tried a few different cables, different PC's, and enabled USB debugging, and it doesn't work in either download (odin mode) or regular mode.
Any ideas?

Maybe it's the USB cable.

I'm gonna post here for later reference also.
Same exact issue.
Was your USB port confirmed working on your no sound device recently before the swap?
I bought a new replacement to swap in. I'll keep you updated if it works for me.
5 different cables, 4 different PC's. Only one authentic Samsung cable out of 5. Maybe that's my issue, but I dunno.
I bought this thing used. I just need rooooooot..... :crying:

So I fixed it. Turns out the connector on the motherboard that the USB daughter board ribbon cable connects to was dirty. I took some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and cleaned it off. Right after that it worked perfectly.

Replacing my micro usb port fixed my issue. The downside is... I broke my sound in the process.
I wish I could just leave well enough alone sometimes. At least I'm rooted on JB now. :cyclops:
EDIT: Apparently my phone only likes my old USB module and not the new one as far as sound is concerned. "yay"
Every time I need Odin, I have to swap usb also.

maybe this shud work for u , it worked for me

[Q] USB not recognizing PC or Docks, please help.

Yesterday I plugged my phone into my PC and went to set it to mount as mass storage but the USB connected notification wasn't there. The phone charged fine off the USB, just didn't see the PC.
I thought this may be a PC issue until going to use it on my HD Multimedia dock, phone wouldn't recognize the dock was attached. Then went and tried it in the car dock, same thing, phone charged but didn't go into cardock mode.
Also not sure if this is related but since then battery has been discharging quite quickly.
Please help.

This will probably solve ur problem:
Uninstall all motorola from PC
Reinstall motocast 1.29
Connect ur razr in every mode, and wait it reinstall the drivers.
Cheers
Thanks, but it's the phone that's not recognizing the usb cable is plugged in. I've tried it on three PCs and the darn thing will only charge, not give usb connection options.
Get a small paintbrush and a can of Dust-Off or other compressed-gas sprayer.
Hold the phone between your knees with the USB port up. Swirl the brush around inside the USB jack while blowing air into it at the same time.
Try it now.
Micro USB jacks have a very nasty habit of collecting pocket lint. It can prevent the cables/plugs on any device from making a solid electrical contact.
This will likely become a routine operation that you perform once a week or so.
You can buy micro-USB rubber plugs that protect a female jack from damage and dirt. You should try the usual places to find one; Amazon, DigiKey, Fry's, JameCo, etc.
If this doesn't get it, you may be looking at either replacing the jack (if you can un/solder very small things), or replacing the phone itself.
PS: If you have geeky friends who like pranks, get a high-powered magnifying glass and check for Scotch Tape on the USB jack contacts. I've done this to an obnoxious iPhone FanBoyz phone before. I confessed before his battery was completely dead...

Did anyone ever find a solution to this? I'm having the exact same issue, have tried clearing out the USB port, different cables and every port on my PC. It charges on connection but doesn't recognise that it is connected to a computer rather than a power port.
Any advice?

Stock. I'm thinking of doing a factory reset as it has been freezing a lot recently and I suspect its a software issue, but I was hoping to do a proper backup first, however I lost root a while ago when I updated to ICS . I don't know if the freezing and not recognising computer could be two sides of the same issue?

[PROBLEM]Charge but PC doesn't recognize...ect

The problem:
I can't get into download mode, when turn off the phone and connect it to USB or WALL charger it automatically boot the phone instead of show the battery charging image
The PC doesn't recognize it (tried many drivers), nothing happens its like I've never plugged it in!!! no messages, no icons NOTHING it just charge
What I've tried:
3 different usb cables
3 different PC (all usb ports)
3 Different galaxy s
Debuggin mode on/off thing
A lot of drivers
Also disassembled the phone to see if something as wrong with the usb port and everything seems in order.
Specs:
Stock 2.1-update1
T959UVKA2
Kernel 2.6.29
ECLAIR.UVKA2
Update 07/21/2012
using the sd card adapter mounted a update.zip called Overstock (It'll have a lock screen loop) but fortunately I comes with CWM and i had a ROM called [ROM][2.2 Froyo][Stock] T959UVKB5 [Deodexed w/Lockscreens+Power Menu] .It has a power menu where I can acces to the download mode but the problems stated above persist.
i cant believe this a hardware problem because it charge normally but this's going me crazy
HEEELP PLEASE!!
Because of this I cant even odin soo I dont know what to do
Early I opened the phone again to check usb port and connections, everything seems to be ok... Installed a ICS ROM called SLIM and have the same problem sooo it has to me a hardware problem T_T but there are no usb port pins loose!!! if nobody have something to add I officially give up here...

I'm not sure what else you can do. For me personally the only usb data cable that works for me is the one from the Tmobile store. I have 2 cables from amazon.com and my old usb cable. None of them work for some reason but they do work with my friends vibrant (weird). If a cable from tmobile doesn't work then the data pins on your usb port could be damaged while your charging pins are still ok( this happens). Tmobile has a 30 day return policy on the $15 usb cable so give that a try if you haven't already. If you end up having to replace your usb port I recommend www.mobiletechvideos.com, lots of users have had success with them in the past.

USB cable connection not working!

Hello, i am new to xda-developers, so please have patience with me
I was using my original usb cable to charge my phone from my laptop. But one day some strange things started to happen, when my phone's battery was completely depleted i connected the usb and phone started turning on and off very often and I wasn't able to charge it even a bit. When connected to wall socket charger everything seems to be fine, it's charging.
But now the usb is not working, neither computer sees it (before i used it), i used other cables, no good. Now it's original ginderbread ROM, maybe i should reinstall it, but i can't do anything since usb is not working in any way.
Maybe someone of you had similar problems and know how to solve it?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply!
I tried cleaning it with Tooth Brush and even used special liquid for cleaning electronics contacts and corrosion removal, everything seems to be clean. But still nothing happens when connecting to laptop.
P.S. Same cable is working when charging from wall socket charger, so it seems the contacts must be clean and intact (at least power supply contacts), so maybe it should charge from laptop?
P.S.S. I forgot to mention, when the phone's battery is depleted, when i connect to laptop, it doesn't charge but in time phone becomes hot. So maybe this would prove it's a hardware problem?
Try different laptop USB port. If this doesnt help than probably your data cable is faulty. Just replace it with another one.
I think Your phone is fully operational if AC charging without any problems.

I have already tried different laptop ports, even different laptops, already tried with different cables (which all functioning properly with other devices and all are marked U2). I am pretty sure that's not connection / cable problem.

USB device not recognised / This device can perform faster

A month or two ago I started experiencing problems while connecting my S2 to the PC or laptop using the data cable.
When I connect the cable to my S2 on the PC or laptop it comes up with the balloon messages in the system tray:
USB device not recognised.
Then a short while later it comes up with another balloon message:
This device can perform faster.
Sometimes while transferring data, it will disconnect and the file transfer fails.
Sometimes if the cable is moved slightly it will cause the device to disconnect from the PC.
And, of course, the file transfers are much slower than they should be and much slower than they used to be.
GT-I9100 Rooted.
I9100XXKKI3
Gingerbread 2.3.6 Stock (Frankenstein)
I haven't touched any ROM or flashed anything on this in like over 8 months so it's nothing to do on that front.
I removed micro SD card and tried reconnecting again, still the same problem.
I've tried different computers, still the same problem.
I've used different cables, still the same problems. Tried enabling and disabling USB debugging. Same problem still remains.
The USB cables and computer and laptop work fine with my S3.
All the correct drivers are installed for the S2.
I'm resigned to thinking it's a hardware issue as I've exhausted other options. Is there a simple fix or will this need sending back to Samsung?
I've had the phone over a year now but someone told me the warranty is two years?
All help appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.

Probably because his USB port doesn't currently work properly.
@OP, this is often caused by a dirty or faulty USB port. You can try cleaning it, but you may need to replace it.
Try cleaning it out with a dry toothbrush first.
If that doesn't work, take the battery out, and try cleaning the port with a small q-tip with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol; let it dry for a while after that, then replace the battery.
If THAT doesn't work, you'll probably need to replace the part for the USB port.
If your warranty is still good, you could try to go that route, but you'll need to unroot your phone. Otherwise, I've heard it runs about $15 for the part, and you can replace it yourself. If you don't feel up to it, you can have a cell repair shop or Samsung service center do it for you, but it will probably be significantly more expensive than $15.
My opinion based on your description is the USB socket on the phone is wearing out/damaged. The USB socket is on a small circuit board separate from the main logic board. It's easy to replace and the part is cheap on EBay. Search for a disassembly/tear down video and judge whether you can do it yourself.

Thanks for the very quick responses guy. They were very thorough as well.
I will look into cleaning the port and if it still doesn't work I'll consider having it repaired. My soldering skills were excellent but I haven't done it for a few years, so may leave it in someone else's hands.
I haven't upgraded to ICS as I was very happy with my phone at the time. Also, a couple of friends who had upgraded to ICS on their S2 regretted it due to numerous problems, which put me off upgrading.
You can still use mobile odin and theres no soldering needed with the usb,it comes as a board with a ribbon cable.

I've had a look on the Samsung website here:
w ww.samsung.com/uk/support/warranty/warrantyInformation.do?page=POLICY.WARRANTY
It seems as though the warranty period on my phone is 24 months so I might just get it done via Samsung.
I'll contact them in the morning and see where I stand. If not, then the replacement USB board connected by a simple ribbon cable sounds like a doddle. I've seen a grade A condition part on ebay for about £8 delivered.
Thank you once again.

This is a Cable problem. The USB port of your device is wider now, that's why the cable doesn't fit well. Buy a micorUsb cable for blackberry, it's always very full and thick, then use it to connect your phone. The issue should be resolved.
I once had the same problem with my Nokia N8 and using a Samsung cable (which looks fuller and thicker) solved it.
Yeah warranty should be 2 years BUT youll have to unroot it first if your sending it to them.
They may also wipe your phone and stick on 4.0.4.
If you get the board yourself, check the number is going to be the same i.e the spare one I have here is GT-I9100 rev2.2.
Also other people have got a replacement board and the mic doesnt work(think the boards are sold as refurbished).
So its up to you which option you go for.

[Q] Unable to connect to pc (no it's not a driver issue....)

Hi,
Having a problem since a few weeks with my s3.
Normally i could connect wiht my phone to any pc,, without any problems. Either it be unix, win, whatever...
Suddnely it stopped working, only thing that happens is charging when i connect it to my pc. Different cables tested, original one, etc..
Connecting it to different pc's resulted in a no go.. so it must be phone related.
No windows pop up, or anything!!
So I figured: Let's install a new rom.
Tried ultima 15 rom, got a different CM rom now (sentinel)... all to no avail.
Is it possible that this has something to do with my radio?
rom info:
android: 4.3
baseband: CEEMG2
Anyone have an idea what to do? Even ADB push ain't working..
See your identical post
I experienced the same problem when m using the Galaxy Nexus S But it was solved by using the app from play store named SD booster... In this app m just set the value of sd card to 1024 give root access and Boom my phone is connected as normal
If this not help then i seriously recommend you to replace the charging port of the mobile through samsung outlet
Go into developer settings, some ROMs may have different ways to get into develop er setting and after you get in make sure USB debugging is enable ^.^
Sent from my SPH-L710 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Usb debugging is not required for phone to pc connection see basic faqs and guides .
But as OP has ruled out drivers and cable that only leaves the phone so its worth trying .
Usual replies are
Drivers
Cable
Dirty USB Ports
Not connected to main-board usb port .
I had same issue with my Galaxy SII and when i took it to service center they said mother board needs to be replaced.
So after that SII was good as new.
Got same problem here.
phone is charging over usb , but no data connection (tried different usb cables, different usb ports, different pc etc) but nothing..
also.. tried in download mode and so (after reading forums..) but without success.
then i decided to dissasemble that phone and look, what's inside that beast
cleaned usb port (inside, with contact cleaner), resoldered all pins and etc..
reassembled it back to one piece again and still, no data connection, but only charging
so, here i am, what to do next ? change the usb port on motherboard ?
(visually, everything looks right, good solder points and etc.)
Thanks, Martin

if anybody interested:
i've got it working again :victory:
basically, the problem was the hard way (crap usb data connections on motherboard)
soldered new ways for data+ and data-, and now it's back alive again...
(pictures of ways in attachment)
Martin
see you fixed it already but a note to others :
try using usb port right on the motherboard instead of the case front panel usb ports.....connecting to the front usb ports didn't work for me on some roms, but the rear one always connected so I just have a long cable running out of the back to connect my phone and it works on all roms I've used so far
Nice work hani93, i unfortunately do not dare to desolder and solder this stuff
I've noticed another thing though which is weird!!
When i tried to charge my phone via the power charger (the ac one?), when i check my battery view it still says that i'm charging via USB.
I don't think this is correct, i thought it should say AC or something and when charging via USB port on pc it should display USB?
I think this might be one of the issues that it's also not popping up on the computer.
Anyone know what is causing this or someone can confirm that when charging via power supply it should say something else then USB?
Just confirming your question when charging by PC it says (USB) and when its charging from the Mains it says (AC).
hmmm... guess it must be a hardware issue then?
Either usb port or mainboard... christ...
open it up and cleaned the contacts a bit of the usb port...
Still not functioning..

try to go into Download mode (volDown+Home+Power) and then connect usb, same situation?(eg, no data connection to pc ?)
if nothing again.. try to clean usb port inside (where you plug usb cable), sometimes there is dust and etc. then it stops working.
also, how did you clean contacts on motherboard ? i suggest to take soldering iron with clean bit, and drag iron along the pins.
