Hi, i have two questions for you, because i don't know what to do...
- the first one : Android 4.0 will be released for this phone ?
- the second one : is it possible to have an official version of Android gingerbread without Touchwiz for the galaxy S II ? ( i don't very like Touchwiz )
I ask you this questions because i don't know if it's better to wait the nexus prime, or to buy this phone... ( sorry for my english, i'm not very good )
Thank you !
1. Yes, probably
2. CM7 is already available, think of it as souped-up AOSP
If you can wait then go for the nexus prime, but there'll always be something better around the corner and the SGS2 is the best out there for the meanwhile
Ill probably be getting the samsung g note but I wonder will the nexus prime have a removable sd card.
thank you for your answers ! i think i will buy the galaxy ! but one last question : the CyanogenMod roms aren't stable yet ?

They're stable enough, as most users would agree, but there are other AOSP ROMs out there that are pure Android, without any CM stuff. It depends what you want, obviously, but if you're after pure Android (as on a Nexus, for example) then that's available and working very well.

Did you ever use and Android based phone before? Install different launcher and get rid of TW. Root your phone and delete samsung based apps with Root Uninstaller. That's it
if you don't like touchwiz you don't need to switch the rom, just search the market for a launcher that suits your liking and customize it to your preference.
i dont think touchwiz sucks that bad. but i wanted to have more control over how the app drawer sorts apps, so i downloaded go launcher ex (completely free) and i got what i want.

+1 I love TouchWiz 4.0. It's fast, smooth and looks awesome. In addition, I love using some of the widgets that are TouchWiz only. Also if you are a TouchWiz user, you can download an app called Appzorter to alphabetize your app drawer (only works on root though). I've tried other launchers and none of them seem to be as fluid as Touchwiz is.
personnaly, i think touchwiz is not very beautiful, the galaxy seems to be an old phone with that. i prefer the style of android, but it's my opinion.
Sounds like your comparing touchwiz 4 to touchwiz 3 in the galaxy i9000.
Touchwiz 4 is silky smooth compared to any other launcher and adds great functionality compared to an standard android device.

I'm a fan of pure Android too, but it obviously doesn't hurt to try all the alternatives out there. As I said ealier I use MIUI, but it's very much NOT pure Android, although built on an AOSP ROM. CM is also built from the ground up, and that's very popular. Your best bet is to just forget what you already know and try what's out there, because there are some great ROMs available. Just bear in mind that a lot of them are simply tweaked Samsung ROMs, and nothing "new" (no disrespect meant to the developers - purely an observation).
I hated the look of MIUI before I tried it because it looked like someone just wanted Android to look like the iPhone, but trying it really showed me how wrong it was. I just guess it's the same with all ROMs. Don't take anyone's word for it - try it for yourself.
Hello everyone, I know that maybe it be a stupid question but coming from an Xperia arc with a lot of Custom Rom available on the web I found a little stunned to see that the Xperia S have little number , maybe 4 or 5 in which I had some problems.
Do you know if this is due to development difficulties or other problems?
since our phone has been included in 'AOSP (even if little time), I expected more interest from developers ...

At this time we have : CM9, CM10, AOKP, MIUI and some Roms based on Stock after 6 months being sold and almost of them are really great that could be used daily. Now let's comparing to Arc's Custom Rom after ~10 months ( in February, 2012) CM7, MIUI and a few Roms based on stock.
These devs here in particular volunteer to do this work so you should satisfy with what we have at the moment:good:

Hello guys, i had sony live with walkman, but he broke.
Now, i liked xperia sola, but, on XDA xperia sola development have little custom roms, so, with the arrival of ics on sola, roms will emerge as there are on other devices? like xperia ray, live with walkman and others that have much custom roms...
sorry by my english...
In next time CM9.1 will come to our sola For sure in Future will come more Developing for the sola i think, but not as much as for the XperiaRay or the XperiaS :/ The XperiaS is widespread and the sola not, it's more a "low active" device i think but ROM's are not all! The important think is that you have a smartphone which you really like and not a smartphone with that you can change everyday to a new ROM!
And sorry for my bad English

Ok, you´re right, arriving the ICS on sola is already a great step i think... but, some good custom rom´s are also great...
Do not go for it. Buy any other brand. The development for U,P and Sola is like zero. Even after ICS i don't think there'll be any good development. Go for sAmsung device. I know they're ugly and all but the development is awesome.

Nonsense !
There is no sense in developing for GB because ICS is right behind the corner.
After getting ICS there will be plenty of ROM's ! U and P are the same phone, only differences are screen size and ram therefore every rom that comes to P can be ported to U in no time.
Samsung devices are crap in matters of build quality.

Same happened with my Atrix. came to a NEW board and now its highly developed

I own a galaxy note and yes the development in that board is astounding. With the Sola, I'd wait til ICS comes out and see if development picks up, if it's that important to you. I got a Sola as a backup device and I can tell you that I'm extremely happy with it. For my requirements, it's very reliable and cost effective. It runs games and apps flawlessly. temple run doesn't lag! Lol

The last time i use a custom rom is on my x10 mini .
For me the custom rom is for those phone which cant get official update .
I don care about the fancy UI thing as you already can do it by installing launcher pro etc
The ICS on xperia P which using same chip with sola is running more than decent .
So it probably does not need any custom rom at all . At most some clean version of stock rom without bloatware .
Just my opinion .
IF...
if you want to have your phone updated as fast as it can be you should buy google backed smartphone like galaxy nexus, companies using android are not to keen on making hasty updates to already sold phones so its better to stay close to the source of android development. If i could get my money back from my Sola i would do so and then i wouldn't hesitate to save some money and buy nexus or sgs II (which used in good shape are like 20-30% more expensive). I should know to not trust Sony in making the ideal phone for me (it was, on paper..) nevertheless its a good phone but in that price range its purchase ain't reasonable IMO.
Since I started using it there were no positive surprises, just the bad ones for ex. you can't make folders in the main app menu, I can't comprehend why on home screen folders can be created, but in app menu you can not make them so with a lot of apps its one giant mess. other trivial example is the Sony's ICS rollout, which is very sluggish and as far as Sola is considered i think it might be the last major update to its firmware.
For me its 5.5/10 in terms of overall satisfaction of owning it.

It seems OP got his answers. Thread closed.
Hi guys, seems sony is not going to support us and not going to update our phones to the latest Jelly bean android os. Looking around the thread i see the only problem with sony not updating to jb is with the drivers for jelly bean for our phones, i also found out that making the drivers is not a impossible task but a very hard one ( seems X8 has no problem running JB as devstaff said ). I on behalf of all the owners of 2011 xperia devices kindly request all the great developers here in this forum to join togeather to develope drivers for these devices, pls guys help us keep our great phone RAY up-to date.
As far as I know it's NOT an impossible task (because nothing is impossible), but our developers have to deal with reverse engineering and believe me concerning drivers it's a very complicated thing. Too much effort and time put with minimal or no gain at all.
I remember WM 6.5 ROMS for HTC Touch HD whose support was so quickly dropped by HTC and we, simple folk, didn't get the desired 6.5 update. So there were cooks and lot's of 6.5 Blackstone ROMS but, as genius as they were, developers didn't manage to get them work full throttle because, guess what, of them blasted drivers!
So the answer to your question is probably "no"..
am i missing the point of this thread?
there is CyanogenMod 10 jb which supports well most 2011 handsets - CyanogenMod the best you can have on the xperia ray.
i too have an xperia ray and was very unhappy with the original Sony bloat - the phone constantly crashed, rebooted, froze up - you name it, it made no fun at all. after throwing it around out of anger, i put myself together and installed CyanogenMod 9 at first, all previous errors were gone spontaneously. now a month or two ago i started to move to CyanogenMod 10 and guess what, it works great - running android 4.1.2. i'm anxious to install the latest fxp146 which will be online soon.

Xperia X8 support stopped with 2.1, but they have jelly bean, so it's not impossible as you say. If the developers wish they could do it for ray too.

Ya man CM is awesome, but it dosen't contain the awesome picture quality of the sony ics camera, there was a picture preview glitch in CM. I'm saying that it would be great if developers could make the drivers for ray and make a debrand engine of sony jb version it will be fuc**in awesome thats all mate.
Well. Only sony has to do this. No developer is able to build drivers. We can port ones as FXP do. And see what is haappening. You dont ahve a full working and cool JB. SO you will never will. There is no engineer that knows sonys hardware and would like to be part of xda and share. No possible way

Then can you tell me how xperia x8 having only 600mhz processor runs jelly bean so smoothly, with its software support stopped by sony in android 2.1 foryo. There is a way, the devolpoers could do it, i personally think if the FXP,AOKP,PA join hands they could do it

It seems you do not fully understand how drivers are developed. And with x8 devs were just lucky to get hands on something similar which they adapted for this xperia model. Hell, you can have legendary HTC HD2 running Android and WP7 smoothly but you won't find not a single driver created from the ground up by our XDA tech gurus! So I repeat, what you suggest is very complex and most likely impossible.

Maybe we should start a donation to Naa to help us? Cuz nAa is a superior dev, he made 2.2, 2.3, 4.0, 4.1 for the X8, and the X8 only runs eclair on stock.
Is my idea good? Should we ask nAa for help?
Another idea is to port DesireHD roms because the HW is almost the same, or maybe Xperia J?
Nothing is impossible, we just need good developers thats good at working with drivers.

good man, any other developers who could help us willing to join this project ??
I apologize in advance for being a noob and asking a very very silly question. I'm new to the Android platform and want to learn.
Here we go. I'm impressed by the UI of Stock Android that can be seen on Nexus devices (Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, they look and work so cool). No lagging, no fancy TouchWiz or anything. But Samsung Galaxy S2 has this touchwiz thingy. I recently got to know that the UI that I love (stock Android) is a part of CM10 (I mean, CM10 looks very much like it, and has added functionality compared to stock Android), and it can be installed on the Galaxy S2. Now there are a few things:
If I get an S2 and install CM10 on it,
- Will it be free of major bugs (there are a few bugs in every OS). But will it perform like the OS on those Nexus devices?
- Would it be a better decision, compared to getting a Nexus device (I don't want the Nexus 4 for some reason, and Galaxy Nexus, well, has slightly low-end hardware).
- Also, I was preferring a Nexus device only for the stock Android look and experience, but if I can get that on a rather flagship phone, why go for a Nexus?
I'll ask more questions once you fine folks post some replies. Please help me out... Thanks, help will be appreciated in non-Androidish terms (though I'm technically sound in all aspects, but i'm a noob when it comes to Android).
Thanks in advance
if you want bug free stock android buy a nexus *period*
gs 2 will have issues with future android updates sadly we havnt got butter on cm10 even after about 6 months of development

Thanks! What about other Custom ROMs? Are there any ones out there (apart from CM10) which look, feel, and work like Stock Android?
(not worth asking, but preferably with less bugs?)

Bro in all honesty, CM10 is actually pretty good for this device and you probably wont really notice much of the bugs (ok there are some annoying niggly issues with the audio but definitely not a deal breaker or anything major, you might not even notice it) and it is a good alternative to AOSP (nexus roms). Yes project butter does not work but the ROM is still damn fast considering that its not implemented "yet".
Another good Nexus type ROM is AOKP, for me this is the better ROM because it has some damn fine swagger, and you will see what I mean if you install it. It is based of CM10 sources so very similar but still unique. Personally bro I would only stick with these two as they are very good quality ROM's, unfortunately as mentioned before, we are stuck with incomplete sources due to Samsung withholding them so we wont have fully stable ROM's until this is released.
My sincere advice is to buy galaxy nexus or nexus 4 if you can. Else I advice you to use CM9 till the time Samsung releases essential sources to make CM10 work better. CM9 will give you much better battery life than CM10. As it is the battery life of S2 is not that great.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for all the replies guys, really appreciated. Actually I'm getting a Galaxy Nexus and a Galaxy S2 at the same price (almost $345). Since S2 is much better (in terms of hardware) as far as I know, it has less issues, better battery life and so forth. All it lacks is the OS that I want in Galaxy nexus, and since you're telling me that AOKP is just as good as stock Android, I can put AOKP (or even CM9 or Cm10) on it and use it. I just want a Galaxy Nexus for the OS, not for the hardware. As a matter of fact, the hardware of Galaxy Nexus is quite disappointing, so that's why I'm preferring the S2. The only reason I'm asking the questions is: whather I can flash a nexus-like ROM on to it and have a nexus-like OS experience. Is that possible? And is it worth doing?

I'm confused, and that's why I'm asking here!

AOSP (in this case CM10) is already good enough to use, and you won't find major bugs as mentioned before (IF you can find them as you don't sound like a really heavy user but I could be wrong). So why waste money on a device if the S2 has better hardware?
AOKP is a modified version based on AOSP, but indeed has a lot more options.

Get a Sensation. Pretty much has a bug-free version of CM10 JB 4.1.2 and various renditions of it (MIUI, PA and even a fully-fledged stock AOSP ROM)

Probably, sorry for the lack of knowledge. The mood of the thread said otherwise.

I can understand your thinking, but I think the development is both probably in the same stage
