Your experience with your S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I would like to know what you guys and girls think of the S3, I'm wanting to buy a new phone but I have heard a few bad things about the S4 regarding the camera, and the sim reading. But I haven't really heard anything bad about the S3. So can you tell me what issues you've had, do you recommend the S3 over the S4
For my use I'm an android developer/business use, so camera etc i don't really care about
Thanks!

S4 is better. Android "developer" is very ambiguous. If you're a rom developer, you'd want to stay away from anything with Exynos. App developers probably don't care.
Fact remains though, the S3 is pretty ancient. Im gearing up to the last 6 months of my 2 year contract. The S3 is far from flagship by today's standards

You being harsh !
Other than the ram its still big! (Not on the top of mountain, but it still lives in the mountain)
But even with 1gb ram phone behaves amazingly well along side with its quadcore
Screen is a m a z i n g not full hd but hd does the job.
True enough if u like of aosp roms s3 is not the better choyce but yet
On tw u get more bloat yes ... but u have tons of cool features as well.
Bad thing about this phone ... it has is lag moments now and then
Overheats but u get used to it
And has all sammy devices take ages to be updated
So if u have a good deal its still amazing phone if u can go better (xperia z, s4, new coming nexus 5, htc one) go for them.

Alright cool, properly gonna end up buying a S4 then, But that thanks for telling me

Many Samsung Galaxy devices has lag issues 'cause of poorly customized Touchwiz, even Gaaxy Note 3 has lag issues, even with 3Gb of RAM, so that's why we have some custom roms. And well, actually I wouldn't buy Samsung device again, 'cause of their policy, poorly customized Touchiwz, and KNOX which avoids your warranty when you're installing custom roms, and others modifications without able to restore it.
So it's up to you.

S3 with bloat removed, a great custom ROM and kernel, with greenify is still awesome, no lags, no shortage of memory. Still looking for a genuine reason to upgrade it!

I agree with his statement. Out of the box (stock) the s3 has poor memory management and lags more than anything with these specs should and it is indeed down to poor software.
Of course that can be easily remedied for people who frequent xda developers, but not the every day user.

What made you pick the S3 over the competition?

Hey guys/gals,
I'm literally counting the days til my upgrade, however with phones like the One X and a few others which i can't think of off the top of my head. Rather than asking VS. questions which will be answered by biased views or perhaps answers which don't answer the why i'll ask it like this.
What was the feature that made you buy the phone over the other phones on the market, what is your favourite feature which made the phone a defo puchase?
Thanks to all that answer this for me.
Mainly the processor, big ass screen and clearly the brand Samsung. HTC are good but from past experience I know that what they seem to offer is not always what they actually have to offer. Other phones are just out of the question, like nokia pure view since I would rather buy a camera than buy that phone (though I already have a DSLR so I don't need one). And to be honest I normally pick phones right away and then find everything there is to know about them. I just told myself that now is the time and this is the phone I want to buy.

- Huge community with lots of ROM's and customizations
- Large AMOLED screen (only had good experiences so far)
- Cool addon features such as Smart Stay
- Perfect USB OTG support
- Large battery
- Samsung-branded. (No issue with their devices so far)
- Powerful 4core SoC
Thanks for the input so far guys, its not a case I'm doubting the s3 but I'll probably get lumbered with a 24month contract and I don't want to miss out on another phone due to blindly buying the s3

If I had a Galaxy Nexus as your signature suggests I would have skipped the S3, I don't think the incremental benefits merit a 24 month tie in. Or you could upgrade now and when the next gen handsets are released your S3 and GN should raise enough to buy whatever tickles your fancy.
For me it was the SD card slot and removable battery. Also I was concerned about all of the screen scratch talk with the one X.
On AT&T, the One X looks to be the better performer but couldn't get past the issues above.

Contract ????? £500 PAYG unbranded CPW .

Because the One X is inexcuseably flawed with the lack of replaceable battery and memory slot and traditionally rubbish battery life, and even though the S3 is also flawed most of it is just software problems that can be bodged up after the fact.
SIII doesn't have any serious competition imho. It is the best phone in the market at the moment hands down. If only my other decisions in life are that easy

I totally agree. Especially the fact that the nexus is about to get jelly bean, it's gonna be a brand new phone. Yes the S3 is the best phone out right now ( in my opinion) but the nexus is also fantastic and I miss that phone sometimes.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
To be honest I believe that there soon won't be a device (including Samsung) that will be let's say 2 or 3 times faster, better, etc. that the SIII. Quad core processors came out now so next year probably they will continue to distribute them. Plus custom roms or the SIII will get better, these guys at xda do a better job than any company out there, they are users that make upgrades for users and know what we exactly need. Software is never an issue it can always be upgraded, modified unlike hardware that is something that is hard to replace in a phone. So when I look for a phone I mainly look at the hardware, for the hidden potential of the phone. And to be honest Samsung SIII is the fastest phone currently on the market and we all know well that it has the most juice in it.

The Nexus always gets the latest OS first but as soon as the Galaxy S's get upgraded you just get stuck with a phone that's always worse than the equivalent Galaxy S, and I'd never buy a phone just to get an OS a few months early because I'd quickly realise the mistake I made.

+1. If you have a Nexus already, I agree that it will feel like a new phone with JellyBean on it.
I am still getting the S3 though. I will be new to Android so will have a bit of learning to do, and JellyBean is supposed to be coming to the S3 in Q4, so by then I'll be ready for it and I think it will make the S3 super-super-swishy (from the mere super-swishy it is now).
For me, replaceable batteries & memory cards are a must, so that basically blew many other phones out of the picture. Good camera, USB OTG, MHL-ing to use it as a games console, proper HD screen, good battery - all of these things sold it too me.
No iThings for me. I don't want to get tied into any restrictive iContract with iEULA, not shackled to iTunes, titchy screen, etc etc.
I was happy with my Windows HTC HD2 (before I bricked it). Hoping buying a Samsung flagship model on Android (with the massive user group that's gathering behind it and seemingly fast updates OTA from Sammy) will mean this phone will function well out of the box, and function amazeballs with a few custom tweaks & mods.
Hopefully I will get my UK blue this week :cyclops::victory:
Screen size and speed
Already running Jellybean, but like people have said you can change Software you can't change hardware and one thing i do miss is the S2 camera I had, so the Samera on the S3 is one of my big reasons.
Thanks to everyone who has posted so far.
What competition?
My last phone was an HTC Desire, and since I was displeased with the HTC Sense UI, I just decided that my next phone would be a Samsung. And the S III just happened to be the best phone out there.
hox has too weak battery in my case, so its a no-competition thing actually
next close to perfect phone is still good old i9000
The hype about it - I figured that with all the talk there would be loads of custom roms developed for the phone. I signed up for a two year contract and I wanted a phone that could last two years which this should do well with that processor. Had a Nexus S before and considered buying a Galaxy Nexus, but 16GB internal and no option for external SD just didn't appeal to me.

[Q] Is it worth the purchase?

I'm planning to buy my first Android phone and I've chose then Samsung Galaxy S2. But what i'm unsure of, is that after investing a substantial amount of money (its still expensive in my country) will it be good enough to handle updates beyond JB for the coming two years? or will it be outdated soon and should i rather go for the s3? Need help! Thanks
S2 is still very good device!
IMO it is worth to buy it.

Don't do it.
The sgs2 is at the end of its support life if we get jelly bean I'll be ecstatic.. But we will not get anything else.. And we will not get the full source code to enable a proper realise of a newer Android OS.
The sgs3 may be short lived as the sgs2 is whispered to come in April..
Save your money buy it used or buy a different phone

You're from India, right? Right now there's about a 12K price difference between the S2 and S3. So I'm assuming price will play a pretty big part in deciding on a phone. The S2 as of now probably has the most support amongst all android phones while the s3 support is comparatively still in a nebulous stage. Having said that, most devs who're working on the S2 now seem to slowly be moving towards the S3..So S3 dev support will only improve with time. The S2 is definitely getting the next iteration of android. But that'll probably be it. So it should be good for the next couple of years at the very least. but beyond that..who knows. Its like comparing the where the s2 is now to the galaxy s.
If your pocket allows it, go with the s3, else the s2 is still right up there with the best IMO.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Its like this. If you want a good phone where you can do anything one can do, and still not be very expensive, go for the S2. You can do everything with that phone. No limitations whatsoever. Good camera, good looking, not so big, and very smooth with enough space for installing apps.
If you want an awesome phone and expensive one, go for the S3, but you would still find everything you do on S3 also in S2. No major differences in there, except the price.
And I am sure with the latest and upcoming Jelly Bean update the S2 will become and even better phone. I really hope that they will also update it with the latest TouchWiz 5 UX Nature interface. If Samsung does that, I will not envy my father for having an S3 at all.
I have both phones in my home and the only major differences between S2 and S3 are on the interface, and the display. S3 has a much much better display and the latest TouchWiz interface is very cool.
Hope I helped in your decision.
Thanks Haxtream, Agonn that really helped. One last question! The HTC One S is from the same category as the S2 right? But in India HTC is lauching it with S3 snapdragon processor overclocked at 1.7ghz instead of the new S4 Krait architecture chip. Its only 3k more than the S2, and since its launched with ICS I'm assuming it will get updates beyond JB.. is it a good option? overclocked processors won't heat up much right?
I can say now in newest google android version we cannot to do customs roms because its some custiminazion center... sorry if my bad english
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium
Can't say I know much about the One-S but what I do know is that the dev support for it is pretty weak. More so if you compare it to the S2's. I'm assuming its mainly coz of HTCs locked boot loader which they're still trying to work around. Might improve in the future, but you never know.
Another thing is with this whole system of using different chipsets in some countries. It leads to a lot of chaos and confusion if you're into flashing custom ROMs and the like. For proof, just look up the number of people who have managed to flash an i9100 rom on their i9100G phone and bricked it. (If you do go the S2 way, be wary of shops trying to pass off an i9100G in an i9100 box.happened to me.)
Finally..I don't know how it is in Kolkata but here there are barely any HTC service centres.so any problem with the phone means you're stuck for ages. Samsungs service centres are a dime a dozen here. Didn't like the way the fellows were behaving in one service centre so next time I had an issue went to another one literally 500mts away.
Will it get support beyond JB? Who knows? These companies are incredibly cagey about releasing info on releases and since it won't be their latest model nor a past flagship (that I guess is the One-X) I wouldn't count on an upgrade..leave alone a quick one.

Now this is turning into an essay so forgive me. But regarding the overclocked processor. Extreme overclocking does equal more heat. But if the company is releasing it that way itself it should be alright.
I know the S4 chip does..not so sure about the S3 chip. Atleast one of them uses the 28nm manufacturing process. AFAIK the i9100 chips' is 45nm. A smaller manufacturing process theoretically atleast, should produce lesser heat even if overclocked.

Hi, if you want long term support for new android go for google nexus, if possible. The first nexus (very old phone) got JB while we are still waiting for SII official JB, and i'm starting to worry if it will ever arrive.
Cheers!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using ICS.
Nexus gets all the latest updates because it is mainly a Google designed product made by Samsung and Google doesn't have other phones to update as far as I am concerned, I so it's easier for them to only update one device than it is for Samsung who have hundreds of devices to work on updating.
It's not because the S2 is inferior to Nexus cause it has probably even better specs and a much better camera, 8MP, while Nexus only has a 5MP camera.
If you are okay with using custom made Roms than you should definitely choose the Samsung Galaxy S2. There are some truly amazing custom ROM's out there in which you'll be able to run Jelly Bean very good and overclock/underclock your phone to up to 1600MhZ and still have not so much overheating problems.
As for HTC one S, and I don't really know much about it. A friend of mine has a HTC one X and he likes it veryI much. Ive had that phone in hand and it was good amazing screen but too expensive. I would suggest you to get the S2 until a much better phone comes out and you make the money to buy it. Cheers.

One last question, This will be my first android phone, So lets say I won't be flashing new roms' on the ONE S with the s3 chip, will simple rooting be also a problem?
IMO just getting root access on any phone should be pretty simple, the best place to get that answer would be the One S forum dude.. people who have and use the phone will be best placed to tell you how easy or difficult it is. Unless someone here has that phone as well or has rooted it for someone else, you wouldn't get a firsthand opinion (for want of a better term)

[Q] About the statement of happines of SGS2 Users!

Hello,
So i am upgrading from SGmini to SGS2
And i was thinking firstly to ask some experienced users with SGS
I could buy the SGS3 but i dont really like that phone (don't know why, but it didnt feel really good in my hand )
So what does the users that own SGS2 think of their phone?
Does it play the newly released games? like some RPG games?
Is it really fast even after installing over 10+ apps/games?
Whats the quality of recording/capturing?
At least just tell me it is WORTH to buy?
sorry for bumping many questions
P.S after i get my phone i should ask a very STEP BY STEP what to do with the phone to work faster!
The SGS2 is still a good smartphone (I'm happy with it right now), but if I were you, I'd go for the SGS3: once you get used to it it's an awesome device, trust me.

Galaxy S2 is still a very capable phone. it can perform without any disappointment with all those things you listed.
I'll advise you to go for the S3 but If the size is a problem, then you can wait for S3 mini (Rumours say it will the same Galaxy S3 in a smaller shell).
If size is not the problem, then you can also consider Note II.

Which one do you want to buy? the Normal I9100 or the I9100G? If you want to buy the I9100 then there will be developing problems whenever a new Android version will come out. Just look at the CM10 thread. The Exynos processor of the I9100 is a huge pain in the ass and Android 4.1.1 is still not working on the I9100 as it should. If you want to upgrade to the newest Android version really quick then buy the I9100G version. It will get quick updates through the community because the processor is from Texas Instruments (Omap) and is developer friendly.
The normal I9100 is still a great phone in my opinion. ICS works very well with it. I`ve been using it for months without any problems.
One question though, have you considered buying a Galaxy Nexus? You would get updates very fast since they would come from Google directly.

This is hands down the best phone I have ever owned as well! Its damn fast, it has a beautiful screen and it has a killer camera. What more would you want in a phone? Sure the GS3 is faster and bigger but having this baby doesn't feel like a major step down from the S3. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have an S3 but I'm not in a rush at all to get it. I don't know why but I really love the shape and look of the S2.
Also one interesting point to note is that for some reason the S2 is a lot tougher than the S3 when compared in drop tests (despite the Gorilla Glass 2 on the S3.) Google it and see for yourself on youtube (helpful if you have butter fingers, but I treasure my S2 like a new born child so thankfully I have never personally dropped mine)
i second, s3 is more sophisticated phone. if you drop it then you have high risk of damage as compared to s2.
but on the other side its loaded with some very good feature and will keep on getting future os updates whereas s2 will only get its last update.
well i would advise to go with s3 if its only the size which is holding you else without any further thinking go for s2

well well, I really like the SGS2 and I know that SGS3 has really much new features but the size, the form is that i dont like. Take a look at Note2 its a good phone and fast but its tooooo big like the SGS3.
So as i see everyone loves the SGS2 and it still run the latest games!!
So I will wait till some new replys and suggestions!

Also one interesting point to note is that for some reason the S2 is a lot tougher than the S3 when compared in drop tests (despite the Gorilla Glass 2 on the S3.) Google it and see for yourself on youtube (helpful if you have butter fingers, but I treasure my S2 like a new born child so thankfully I have never personally dropped mine)

same here, well i haven't dropped my phone out of my casemate tough case! only once in the case but not one mark appeared!
i did around 2 to 3 months of research before getting this phone waiting patiently watching youtube video reviews etc by samjpullen (how sad that i remember the name! ) but i was serious about choosing this phone after all you have it for two years. i will no doubt do the same for my next phone- i hope rumours are true and that a smaller alternative to the s3 will become available- im not concerned though as my upgrade isn't due till next July/August.
i am though trying my hardest to convince my wife to get an s2 for her upgrade in November or December!
people say the s2 is big but not in comparison to others!

So you think SGS2 is a really good phone for taking pictures and playing movies/games?
Dont bother with "the step by step to make phone faster".

indeed! I've played gta and currently im playing football manager and its smooth as anything, camera as with all mobiles can be bad in poor light but tbf most situations the camera is great-hd recording as well which is perfect for me as my son is only 8 months old so lots of videos to treasure!
i can honestly say you wouldn't regret getting the s2 but take a look at some videos and see what you think, I've stayed stock up till now but maybe in the new year i may go for a custom Rom and be brave throughout my last 6 months on this contract! lol
if i didn't get the bug and itch to upgrade come upgrade time i could seriously keep this phone as my main driver for longer than the contract is up!

Bro get the S2, I promise you wont be disappointed!
Even if this phone doesn't officially get the next OS update (after JellyBean) I guarantee it will still get it in the form of unofficial ones like CyanogenMod etc. I mean it has a freaking 1.2 Ghz dual core processor! That's almost as fast as my old P4, plus it has a good GPU. It plays every game I have thrown at it perfectly.
It truly is a legend phone and one which set the bar for all other phones! I wouldn't think twice in owning another one.
I love it
I love my Galaxy S2. Perfect screen size for me, slim body, good development team, etc. I really don't think about getting the Galaxy S3 despite its good processor and such, this is because it looks like a fridge and the screen is too big.

[Q] Do vibrant users need newer device??

im a proud t959 user, though vibrant is an old device i think it still fully functional!! so what do u guys think about it?? do we need a newer device?? what newer divices can do vibrant cannot??
Vibrant is just classic.... Fast enough, efficient. But you shouldn't compare it to newer devices
This is just a Tapatalk Signature. Thanks for reading! :silly:

Lol! If you are just a normal user, i suggest you stick to the vibrant. But if you want a bigger screen with a better performance than the vibrant, i think the note will be fine.
Kindly hit the THANKS button if i helped.

You cannot compare our Vibrant with new devices. Even if the vibrant still rocks there's a huge difference compared with new devices. Just got my S3 and i can't believe how fast it is. Very easy to feel few years of technology.

I think unless you want to play high end games, you don't need a new device (since we still get Android 4.0+ apps). The Vibrant hasn't supported the big flagship games in a long time, yet somehow the N64, PSP, and the NDS (this one is pretty slow) emulaltors run games like Family Guy for the PSP or Paper Mario for N64 pretty well. The Vibrant also seems to lack a reliable GPS and lacks NFC. Not only that from what we konw about Android 4.3 (OpenGL ES 3.0 and low energy Bluetooth support); it won't really benefit the Vibrant all that much. I think at the worst, the Vibrant is becoming that old laptop that you give to kids or "technology-challenged" people for light gaming and web use. This device still gives a great Android 4.2 expirenece which shows that it attracted some great devs and Samsung made hardware that was well beyond its time. Still, if you want a new device, go for it. There will always be reasons to upgrade, that's why some people upgrade their phones annually.
As for me, I'm waiting for T-Mobile's LTE-Advanced network (and a phone that can that can theoretically support support 150 mb/s downloads) but might upgrade earlier for OpenGL ES 3.0 support (because the GameCube emulator and eventually flagship games will require it)!

S4 mini seems to be the best upgrade (especially in terms of screen size). Sometimes I feel the lack of more RAM memory.
Other than that, I'm fine with it, the CPU is not painfully slow.
:cyclops::cyclops::cyclops::cyclops:
You guys are just great,, I think its worth to upgrade.

I'm still using mine until it dies. It will be a sad day for me when it happens, and I'm sure I'll be wowed by the difference my new phone will make.
My Vibrant was an insurance replacement for my Nexus One, and I hated it at the time. Luckily, people way smarter than me have kept this phone relevant.
Even if I upgrade, I'll still keep this one around. One day these older flagship phones will be like classic cars.
Damn, I'm getting old.

Well, the S3 is still a very good smartphone with a very good camera, but it wont receive any updates from samsung...
Work is in progress and I think, when the KitKat for the LTE version (I9305) will be released, it will become very stable
I think its worth, chek posts here, there are something like this question, there are more answers..

From my point of view it doesn't worth to buy s3 in 2014 and I will tell you why, don't get me wrong it is a good phone but not extraordinary. That 1 GB of ram is not that capable with 4.3, or 4.4 sammy and the bad exynos processor bleahh, so I advise you not to buy S3, or any Samsung( it is a totally s*** ), now depends on how much money you have for your new phone
Cheers, gabyif

Maybe take a look at the S4? It costs around 300$ if you find the right seller
Now I would buy a nexus 5, a little bit more expensive but it's a really nice phone.
After a S1 and a S3 I also need some changes.
Yosh,
Don't forget the LG3.
G3,S4,NX5 all of them are expensive in my country.Maybe G pro has same price as SGS3.Will try to look up at right seller.

great features, yeah maybe...features like smart scroll, smart stay and other smart features I never used, this occupe alot of RAM and slows down the device and if the device has 1 gb of ram the situation is even worst.Best phones NO,I mean there a alot of brands better than Samsung,if you ever used a HTC you know what I mean,it(HTC,in general) has not as much bloat as samsung puts in their phones, samsung puts tooooo much bloat...of course this is just my opinion and I still don't recommend Samsung anymore,I regret that I bought S3 but this is the life

I use to be on a on development Tom team for HTC phones so yes I know all about HTC and I will never go back to them.the only phone I would consider other than the so would be the LG g3 but I still wouldn't leave Samsung for it my next phone will be the note 4.plus the great thing about x da and android is if you love a certain phone but don't want all the features that come stock you root and flash a romantic to your liking

Hmm...don't know what to say I used a HTC one s and at that time I had a s2 as well and the one s was more faster, cooler and the battery was much better so I remain at my point of view that Samsung is no more a big manufacturer, at least for me... )
And if I would to buy a new phone I definitely choose a AOSP phone, like nexus 5 or ONEPLUS ONE
Sent from my GT-I9300 powered by ArchiDroid+ArchiKernel
I'd also say don't bother. The display's picture quality is rather poor compared to the competitors at the time and all of the current gen high-end phones. My phones wifi is defective, effectively giving me 2-3m range. The back peels off and the fake metal plastic rim gets damaged very easily. The led indicator is only good at displaying R, G or B, as it doesn't mix effectively at all. The display and resolution needs to be a bit larger, as the lack of quality makes certain tasks difficult. I'd suggest a bigger display anyway. The Samsung official software (I'm currently using S5 software), is rather lacking, it hides useful Android features and gives a plethora of useless features which are poorly organised into categories.
I'm considering getting a new phone. It's hardware is pretty good, but it could be so much better in every aspect.

Get a g2. Port over sense and collect that $1000 bounty. Then get whatever phone your heart desires
No, Don't buy it. If u want an older smartphone choose the HTC One M7. S3 is just too outdated imo and I hate touchwiz from samsung hence why I have AOSP
If I were you go I'd go for Moto G.If from older devices: HTC One M7,also if you can look at HTC Desire 816 (if price in your country of it isn't very high) if price is too high you can look at HTC Desire 601.If you wanna be update to date with Android updates choose Nexus 5 .Just everythng depends on your needs. But Galaxy S3 won't get official Kitkat update (so officially it abandoned and forgotten by Samsung) also,Sudden Death syndrome bug (it will only depend on luck if you will get affected or not affected by it)
