Rooting and updating an Android version - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does any one know of a step by step guide of how to install the latest version of Android on an HTC Desire S?
There is plenty of information on Google but i cant find a detailed guide that includes how to root the phone first. The HTC Desire S i have is currently running Android 2.3.5.
A couple of questions:
- Does the Android version depend on the spec of the phone? (i.e. does the phone have to have a specific amount of memory or specs for me to be able to install the latest version on the Desire S)
- Does the phone have to be rooted first before i can install
- If i do root and install the latest version, will i be able to revert it back to its original factory settings?
- What does "installing a custom ROM" mean? Is this the same as installing a different distribution of Linux or a modified version of XP?
- What is the relationship between installing a custom ROM and updating the Android version? Is it the same thing?
- And finally, are these custom ROMS safe? Do i have to install a custom ROM to be update the Android version and if so, how do you ensure that when you update to the latest Android version, you are not installing a version that has modifications to record personal information e.g. your email or paypal logons?
Thanks.

up.. this is also my question..

Questions about rooting HTC Hero

I'm new to android phone, after reading lots of post about rooting, I've got a few questions to ask. I have 2.73.405.5 European ROM, as I know I'll have to downgrade to older version (1.76.405.1_R3) to get it rooted. I like HTC Sence UI pretty well. My major purposes to get it rooted is to get APP2SD, and some blue tooth and ad-hoc wifi features works.
- Is there any different between these 2 version?
- Can I update to later official version but still have root access?
- If not, which custom ROM keep all or at least the most from HTC's official ROM?
Thanks in advance!
First of all you don't have to downgrade, I have that same version ( I had to downgrade from a higher version) and root works fine with the flashrec method (see stickes in the forum).
Second, root doesn't give you APP2SD out of the box as I understand (not sure about it) you can however install custom mods that enable that feature and work with it, I recommend Modaco (the one I am using currently).
I don't think you can upgrade (as I had to downgrade), the rooting process uses a bug in the system that has been fixed and patch in later versions.
I have downgraded and I have not noticed any missing features or lack of support for something.

Building Upgrade 2.3.7/3.0 ROM from ClockworkMod Recovery Android 2.3.3 Backup

Hi! I have an Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread HCL ME X1 Tablet. I successfully rooted it all manually by using ADB and installed "su" and superuser tools. I manually installed ClockWorkMod Recovery 5 by using Terminal. Then I created ClockWorkMod Recovery 5 full backups. I have the factory reset ClockWorkMod Recovery backup of a fresh Stock which came from Carrier. Doesn't contains any defect. The Carrier/Company won't release any further upgrades, and is not giving any original stock ROM.
All I ask with due patience and respect, to guide me to manually build an Upgrade ROM from 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 or from 2.3.3 to 3.0 Honeycomb. I would certainly require original company device drivers and factory files from the the backup. I won't mind any type of comment. Can this new 2.3.7/3.0 upgrade ROM be built from the older 2.3.3 ROM, manually? Please guide me step by step. Tell me the tools, configuration, drivers, kernel, etc. If you need any other information, please ask and I will inform I won't use update.zip flashing, instead I would manually flash/copy the images via ClockWorkMod Recovery/ADB console. Hope my friends guide me.

2.3.3 to has barely any changes. And 3.0 was not open sourced until recently, it will be very hard to make your own ROM from this

It will be my first ever try, if 2.3.7 is easier to build as an upgrade to my 2.3.3 android, please let me learn the steps and knowledge to do it. Currently, I haven't found any information regarding how to manually build an upgrade from an older version Backup image files, to a brand new version. I could at least try with your guidance and then learn the things which will come handy in building 3.0 and 4.0 Android + ROMs.

it's possible to downgrade any android device

hi..
i want to know if that it is possible to downgrade any android device without problem ..??
thank you...!!!
I suppose that any android device could be theoretically downgraded to a previous software version. For some devices you can find even s stock Rom, based on an older version of android, so that everything would very likely work... But, if your phone run android 2.3.7 and no stock Rom based on 2.3.3 exists, it won't be easy to find a custom rom based on older software, apart from the need of rooting the phone.
So you would have to build it from source (not easy at all) or trying a port.
In any case, most developers work to get the benefits of the latest software and I think that nobody works to go back to outdated software.
Most of the time you will only be able to downgrade to the first version of android that was shipped with the device (As it can be hard to back port drivers etc) for example my Note was shipped with 2.3.3 so I could not downgrade to anything lower that that
Yes, I believe it's possible to downgrade your device. You just have to flash some special ROM (with older Android version).

[Q] Z7 Max update impossible

Hi all,
I bought a Z7 MAX on lenten.fr a few month ago and I think they put a custom rom on it (because I have multi-language on it).
I have a problem, every time i boot my phone it ask me to do an update (NX505J_CNCommon_V1.38). It starts but it is always failed.
So I decided to put an other custom rom (like cyanogen) or the official one but it is impossible, could some one help me please?
My mobile phone is:
NX505J
nubia UI: V9.5.0
Android version: 4.4.2
build number: NX505J_CNCommon_V9.29
Hardware version: NX505JMB_A
Thanks,

You can only do official over the air updates if you are running stock ROM and recovery and unrooted. I am in the same boat as you, however I am just waiting for official android v5.0 to be released for the mini as there is no point in upgrading when that release will be coming very soon.
instructions are here anyway:

Are you going through the Nubia update app or flashing through recovery? Many European dealers install their own custom ROM which ends up impossible to update through Nubia update.
You should download the official 1.64 ROM (the latest Android 4.4.2 version; google "ZTE Nubia Z7 Max Official ROM v1.64", it should be on NeedROM) and install that through recovery. From there you can either install CM or upgrade to official Android 5.0. You can find instructions for installing ROMs through recovery mode in the post flamery linked.

Unfortunately nubiaforums is closed
Could you point me to instruction how did you upgrade this 9.29 ROM?
[EDIT]
So, I'll aswer myself, in case there is another one with such old ROM.
Problem solved, found a way to upgrade to Lolipop. Thanks to user craagz, who wrote this tutorial (just erase spaces in http).
Next I have installed official 2.13 ROM (nubia updater made resize of patitions) - it's lolipop 5.0.0.
One thing - USB debugging must be switched off
Next step - from stock recovery from ROM 2.13 directly installed newest official ROM-3.77 - lolipop 5.1.1, and with tigreos tutorial from needrom/ and rooted and gapps.
That end I just have to configure apps and make LTE works

[Q] Need help with upgrading Android version 4.2.2

Hi, I own a Chinese phone which is BML One Mini (also known as a Spreadtrum SC6820) which has Android 4.2.2 on it.
I was wondering the steps on upgrading/updating the Android version from 4.2.2 JellyBean to 4.4/5.0? Since on my phone, I do not see the 'system update' option, I have gathered that the only way to do this is via a custom Rom.
If anyone would like to give me some advice on what/how to update my Android version to something higher then I would be very grateful.
Thanks,
Edward.
