[Q] Real noob regarding root and flashing. Please read and help - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this a repeat post but I've got a galaxy s2 running 4.1.2 xwlsd and I'm looking to root it and hopefully flash a rom. I have searched through the forum but it's baffling and I can kinda get my head round it a little till I read something else. From what I gather there are 2 ways to root, by odin or from sd card? I assume I need to find the a xwlsd file to load from sd but can only find xwls8. Ive tried to Google how to do it but can find any for that build and the last thing I want to do it brick it. I assume I also need to root to be able to flash a rom on it through odin. Any help and info is appreciated or point me in the right direction thanks.

There are many methods to flash. I am most comfortable with Odin. Its pretty simple and straight forward.
Just download a rooted kernel for your ROM. Siyah or philz is good.
Flash via Odin
Enjoy rooted phone.

You have to use kernel for your version. Search on the forum you will find it. Else google it.
Also, this is a general section, questions are asked in the Q&A section.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply I think I have found one to root by sd using philz, are there any advantages to using odin rather than load from sd? Oh and when I flash a romantic it has to have the same kernel xwlsd I assume?

[Q] Updating Kernel

Hi, Just got my galaxy s2 two days ago. It came on KG7, I was wondering how can I update to KH3? (I heard this improved the battery live and I want to try it). I mean where can I download the file? and I just have to load it on odin and flash it?
Also will I lose my root?
I'm sorry if this has been asked but I cant find it anywhere.
Thanks
You can find the Rom in this thread under the Frankenstein section as well as the instructions on how to flash. You will loose root if you flash the entire firmware. You can find the cf root kernel here
Yeah as stated above, just flash firmware and then flash the corresponding cf root kernal to regain your root.

Ohh ok I got it.
But when I go to the frankenstein section there is two links for the KH3 Kernel. One that says that is a package and takes like 264mb and the other one says stock kernel and only weights 5mb or something? Which one do I have to download.
Also to remove the yellow triangle that appears due to the rooting, the post says that i have to reflash the stock kernel back, but that doesnt remove the root like this first time?
THanks

[Q] Help rooting second GS2

I dont post often because I can usually (confidently) find what I need by reading all the great info already posted but I'm new to android and have a few questions.
I rooted my Galaxy S 2 really easily by reading/downloading various things throughout the forums...no problem. Currently runing CheckROM V5/Siyah v1.7.8 Kernel. It was easy because I had no problem locating the correct Kernel for rooting ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182922 )
A month later I got one for my wife for her birthday, threw out her old Iphone 3g and started trying to get it rooted. My problem is I can not find a matching kernel to root this one with. Its got XWKDD/2.3.3 on it...wont update through Kies and here is where my questions start:
Can I update this manually through odin with a stock 2.3.5 rom (or any other)? It should update the kernel along with the firmware and then I can find a matching one to root with...correct? I'm just a little nervous because searching for "KDD" in the forums yeilds like two topics that no one ever answered. Is there something weird about this firmware? Any help appreciated.
flash any stock firmware from Intratechs thread using Odin, that ought to do the job

My tab wont unroot?

Hey guys.
im currently about to sell my gtab, and im trying to get it bk to stock unrooted.
now, i tried to install the latest UK firmware, which is: P7510XXKL2 and i downloaded it through sammobile and flashed through odin, but every time i tried to flash it through odin i got bootloop.
So in the end i downloaded :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412601 and flashed that. But now i want to unroot it... is that possible, if so, what should i do?
thanks
Adam.
Use Supersu app from play store. There is an unrooting guide somewhere here also. Search!! And don't post questions here! (in no way am I a moderator, but the rules clearly state: questions to Q and A)

oh, that is no biggey. once you are done flashing, get into recovery mode and do a factory data reset. that should fix the issues. how ever, make sure that you have got a SUCCESSFUL flash with odin and no corrupted files. if that is the case, do a fresh download from samfirmware.
You have to first repartition your Tab besides flashing the stock Rom....
See this Post and follow the link Given in it....

For the record this should be in the Q&A section OP.
You're unrooting difficulties are probably related to the fact that you shouldn't sell you tab

[Q] i9100G - Root + CM10 install help. Firmware confusion!!

Hello People,
Let me begin by stating that I am very very new to Android rooting and custom roms (actually, this is my first time ).
I have a SGS2 i9100G. I have attached the screenshot of my phone software details. I have searched on the internet and XDA but am unable to find or maybe understand how to root my device and install CyanogenMod 10 (JB 4.1). Whenever I reach a post which seems like the way to root my device, it talks about firmwares and modems which are different than what my phone has.
I would be very very greatful if someone can sort this for me and provide some links and steps on how can I successfully root my phone and install CM10 (JB 4.1). Thanks a lot already as I know people will start replying in no time.
Cheers !!

But pay attention to what kind of kernel you flash, because you have ICS, and I haven't checked if the links in the thread are maybe for Gingerbread.
About flashing CM10: just follow the flashing guides on xda, and make sure you download the file for I9100G.

Hey buddy,
Thanks for the reply. I checked the link but it does not says anywhere about which firmware or android version I should be. As the latest update is from March, 2012, I am assuming that this is for Gingerbread with old kernels. I don't feel good about flashing this. Do we have anything specifically for my kernel/firmware?
Thanks for your reply again. Hoping you will lead me to the right path.

I'm don't really follow the I9100G-threads as I myself have an I9100, so for rooted ICS-kernels you can flash through Odin you have to look for yourself (or someone else might know this)...
And what about flashing the official GB-rom with Odin, then root it with the link I send you, and then upgrade by flashing a custom rom..?

Hmmm...your advice about downgrading to GB and flashing rooted ICS seems to be a good way to go. But I am very new to flashing and I am not sure if I will be able to go through everything without bricking my phone. Thanks anyways.
Good luck with it anyway man:thumbup:

[Q] Where do I find the *.tar file in ROMs?

Hello everybody.
After much trouble trying to update my device from 4.1.2 to 4.3, I have hit a wall.
I've downloaded Odin, Samsung drivers and some custom ROMs. But I can't find the .tar file.
I rooted my device, so I cannot recieve the update using the device itself. All my friends, who have S3's, have been updated to 4.3. I'm the only one missing.
Can any of you help me? Refer me to some sort of sticky, or give me a quick step by step on what to do?
I have browsed through all folders in the ROMs I've downloaded, but with no success. After 5 hours of browsing for info, I am close to being furious.
Thanks in advance. Everything is appreciated.

If you mean official l firmwares then you should head towards Sammobile.com and find the file for your device and your region... If you have rooted and you don't want hassle with your PC and Odin 5 go to general section of s3 and there you will find zip files for those official roms with performance and battery tweaks and flash those using a custom recovery.. For getting a custom recovery the simplest method is download ROM manager and install it... Or otherwise you have. tar files for touch recoveries like cwm touch, Phil's or twrp... but if you don't want that then sammobile.com is best fit you and yes you will lose root after that...

Thank you for this. I am finally on the right track with correct rooting and recovery! I will most likely try and get a custom ROM tomorrow, if everything goes as planned. Again, thank you very much!
