Possible issue? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. This is probably nothing serious, but ive noticed my proximity sensor (one nearest the speaker on the gs3 I think? Anyway, it appears to be emitting a very dark red light that is visible when staring into the proximity sensor. Could this be a sign of failure or is it a less serious problem? Thanks

If you hold the phone in front of your face and make a call, staring in the proximity sensor, you will indeed see a "dark red" beam of light. This is how it works. It beams the light out and uses the time it takes for the light to be bounced back to calculate the distance from the sensor and whether it needs to de-activate the display and digitiser.
However, if you are not makign a call and you can see this beam, then theres something wrong. The sensor should not be active, unless you're using the sensor in other apps.;

Indeed I was NOT making a phone call at the time, just using facebook. It happened for a good 30 secs and hasn't happened since the time of me posting this, just a one off glitch do you think?

X10 has a proximity sensor?

Hi,
I'd like to know if X10 has that proximity sensor, that, during calls for example, can detect if your face is near of the phone, turning off the screen and saving some battery. I'm my opinion this is very useful.
Yes it does, although the stated usage is to avoid the face interacting with the touch capability. I don't know if it turns the screen off.
at least for my old Motorola Cliq the sensor is able to turn the screen on and off..
I haven't had any problems talking with the phone against my cheek. Read on a swedish forum about someone getting sms during a call and seemingly had answered the sms with his cheek. Needless to say, it was filled with junk^^

Yeah, I read that too! But I have never had any problems like that myself. Works like a charm!
Yes. It has a proximity sensor. It is near the top to the right of the speaker. It will disable the touch and dim the screen (which will also turn off after a time) when it is against your face.
Does anyone know if the sensitivity of the proximity sensor can be tweaked. Mine only blanks the screen when i put my finger within about 1-2 mm of the screen. Now i know i have big ears, but if i position the phone so that it is hard against my face but the proximity sensor is over the centre of my ear the phone comes on. Anyone else get that?

does the proximity sensor also works in pants or shirt??
for example: i pick up a call using bluetooth and the phone is in my pants, it seems that the phone screen n touch screen is on... if i move my body and accidentaly touch the "end call" button i suddenly hang up... this also happen if i accidentaly hit the speaker key on the screen... i know donut 1.6 doesnt have this problem, but after update to eclair 2.1 the screen doesnt shut if i pick up a call using a bluetooth...

LED notification on SGS...just noticed.

Ok I was walking into my house when I received a call. I answered and since there were no lights on I noticed a red flashing led on the left side of the AT&T logo between the front can and promixty sensor. I didn't know the SGSII had a led till this point, and since it does, any way to make it brighter and configure it for SMS etc? Sorry if I'm late. News to me...lol.

Not a notification light, its the infrared led used for the proximity sensor.

Strange behavior when dialling

Hi I have just got a HTC radar as a company phone and am getting some odd behavior when dialling
Sometimes it works like expected other times when I press call the screen goes off and will not come back on no matter what I do until the other end pick the call up
Now that's not so bad until you call voicemail when nothing makes screen come on ie tried moving away from anything (in case proximity sensor turning it off ) tried the on/off button volume even camera button nothing works so I can't press option 1/2 etc
Only way I can end the call is to remove bottom cap and take sim card out
This happens on around 50% of all calls and is really bugging me , if its connected to a bluetooth car kit ,the car kit can end it ok
Everytime on bt kit the screen goes off with pressing call
Anyone else having this problem?

Do you have a screen protector? If so it could be one of poor quality and is interfering with your screen. Remove it if you got it. Also it can mess up your ambient light sensor/proximity sensor.

Nope I have nothing on the screen its as it came
Have reset device still the same I'm guessing it has a problem , sad to say but HTC aren't impressing me lately even thinking of replacing my sensation with a galaxy nexus soon :-(

I'm having the same issue too. But i do have it all the time, with every single call i make.
Lets test something here:
Grab a flashlight and turn it on
Cover the light sensor in the upper left with your finger and make sure the 3 capacitive buttons light up.
Uncover them
Now shine the flash light directly into the light sensor
Did the lights turn off? If not get your phone replaced. If they did then you or something is covering the light sensor. The light sensor can turn the screen off at around 1".
I wrote to HTC, they replied after 1-2 hours:
"this is a functional problem caused by a sensor inside the phone" ... "if you can please do get a replacement phone if you have just bought the phone"

Tried this but nothing happens while call is active , I rang someone today got their voicemail I left a message but after my message I couldn't end the call I had to connect it to my car kit and use that to end the call
Time for a new handset here as well I think :-(

For me, the light turned off. In fact I do not need to shine a torchlight. If I cover the top part of the display the 3 capacitive buttons light up. If I uncover, the light disappear. Any ideas? The screen is turning off every time I make a call.
That tests the ambient light sensor(s) - most phones have 2 or 3 - but it doesn't test the proximity sensor... (because the button lights should be tied to the ambient).
Either way, I have not heard of this issue, though HTC has pushed out a firmware update over zune for the Titan recently. I'd recommend to check that, and if there is no update/doesn't fix, then replace the phone.

Is my sensor working properly then? I have a screen protector installed. Is that the problem? I have not tried taking off the protector yet.
You should try that. Some cheap screen protectors can mess with it. I know this was the case with some protectors on the dell venue pro early on.

o.0!? The proximity sensor is normally a led rangefinder in the infrared frequencies. Light sensor could cause lots of false positives...
Sent from my SGH-i937 using Board Express
Fixed the problem. You must remove the clear stock screen protector...it distorts the sensor.
I've been saying that all along
I did a test. Peeled off a bit of the screen protector, enough to expose the sensor. Made a call. The screen didn't blank. So it's the screen protector.
Hi guys I have just recently bought a Radar from bay and im having the same problem, but this time there is no screen protector.
If I cant get a refund form the seller, can I get a warranty repair seeing as though im a second owner?
Cheers

[Q] Blinking/Flashing Red Light from Proximity Sensor on GS2

I just bought SSGS2 last week, and i noticed that when i make a call, this the red light will be blinking/flashing. When I compare it to other SSGS2, all of which will have a red light on when make a phone call (not blinking/flashing).
So I was wondering if anyone had the blinking light?
As far as I am concerned, it does not affect usage just yet.
But who knows...it might be a sign of inferior sensor.
Thank you.

Use your phone in the dark, you will see a very dim red glow where the proximity sensor is.
Thank you.
Should it be blinking? or stay on while calling?
Mine is blinking. Those of my friends stay on
can some one please advise, Proximity Sensor should be Blinking/Flashing or solid On when you are on call?
It's blinking for me as well... Why are you guys so paranoid. Is it working? Yes it is.
It blinks extremely quickly, seems like 20 times a second. I can in indoors lighting clearly.

Well my so called proximity sensor "red dot" keeps flickering while in standby/phone locked. I understand it's suppose to be on while on a call etc. but what when the phone is lying idle?
same problem!

kindly email me if you have method to solve it . [email protected]
I dont know if this is relevant but I've had both the i9100 and the i9100G. On the G variant the blinking of the proximity sensor was pronounced and noticeable.. whereas on the international variant I've never yet noticed it blinking or staying on. Maybe you have the G variant?

If you have Viber, uninstall it! I had that issue few days back. actually I just uninstalled it because it was draining my juice but the then after getting rid of the viber app my proximity sensor was no longer blinking like crazy.
Since I dont use Viber I unistall it.

[Q] Dat Light...?

I'm unsure if anyone tackled or even noticed this one yet, but I noticed that after I unlocked the bootloader via htcdev.com, whenever I make a call, there's a little red light that sits above the HTC branding (left of the notification LED) that flickers repeatedly whenever I make any phone calls. Is this a unlocked bootloader indicator, malfunction, or normal function of the phone? Also, can someone tell me what that light is for if it's not an indicator of a call?

I don't ever get the red indicator light unless my battery level is low.
In fact I don't have any LED light while I'm on a call at all.

I'm not saying the notification LED. It's a separate light to the left of it. It's located conveniently right above the right side of the T in the HTC branding. It's very very faint. The only reason I noticed it was because I was in the dark and I pulled the phone away from my face to look at it.

That's a sensor. It turns the screen off when the phone is by your face..(having a brain fart of what that sensor is called) lol

So when that sensor is active, you can see the red flashing it does?
Edit: Well, you seem to have won the cookie. I don't know why my proximity sensor is actually visible. I just tested it with my thumb. Turns out that that is indeed the proximity sensor.
Mine does the same thing only its completly random. I'll look over and it'll be flashing. I decided to just ignore it a few weeks ago.

Mines doing it to, its really very faint and wouldn't have noticed it had I not read this.

I noticed this a while a ago it is the proximity sensor, its not next to the left of the ambient light sensor and it is NOT the led!!, go into a dark room and make a call it'll start blinking...or any app that uses proximity sensor...Also if you have the option of pocket mode it'll probably be running all the time but i'm not sure, it should technically run when you receive a call, but you will definitely notice that it'll blink very very rapidly while you're in a call...proximity sensor!!
Whats weird that I noticed also is that when my HTC amaze fell on the floor board of my truck I reached down to pick it up and passed it in front of my Radar detector the L band went off on the radar detector I though maybe a cop out but nope every time i put the phone in the radar detectors view it started going off, pretty weird just wondering if anyone can explain that, it might be the reason its giving off that red glow
It emits infrared light. Some peoples' eyes are better attuned to see it than others. In other words, some people cannot see the light at all, and other people can see it just find - it all depends on how sensitive your eyes are to the infrared spectrum.
yeah i thought i was the only one with this problem. whenever i make calls the light goes crazy even after the call!
hey so after reading this, because i was also trying to find out what it is myself.. i now know what it is..
but recently i noticed that my phone freaked out, and shut itself off, and that red light stayed on.. my phone wouldnt charge nor turn on until
i took the battery out and out it back in.. has that happened to anyone??
Yea I've seen it to
