OK, so to start I have read and read and search the forums, but I don't see anyone with these strange symptoms, so here it is...
I have a GT-I9300 running CM 10.2 (4.3.1) here in China, and in my home the signal is terrible, between 0 and 1 bar. I do get data, however it constantly jumps between E and H+, so I decided to give an RIL update a try. I downloaded some RILs and some MODEM+RILs to try experiment with, two which reference China and a UK unbranded one. Flashed all three and always I get the same strange result.
With the original RIL and/or matching or unmatching Baseband, I get 0 to 1 bar and slow data. If I flash ANY of the 3 that I downloaded I get FULL SIGNAL bars, and it's glued to H+ with great data rates. I can make calls just fine, however none of the downloaded RILs allow me to receive calls. I go back to the original setup and my signal drops to nothing, data goes back to slow, but I can send and receive calls.
Ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Wrong section, this is not Q&A. Anyways, flashing ril on cm will break calls or other stuff, since cm is not using a standard implementat of libril. The only thing you can change is the modem.

Exactly. CM uses OpenRIL, so flashing any sammy ril will break it. Download an app called 'perka's file stash' from playstore, there are plenty of modems without ril that you can safely flash. but first, reflash CM to restore normal ril.
. .and then read general > sticky roll-up thread > understanding the basics before rooting. All this and much more is covered

It's funny you should say that given the section this thread is in is called "Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting"
I think it's right there in the middle somewhere...
But I digress. Changed the modem, aside from my phone changing the way it identifies my carrier there seems to be no change. Sometimes the carriers is called China Unicom, sometimes it's called CU-CHN. Odd.

I'm using Samsung's messaging client and I've noticed that when I receive an SMS, the time displayed is not the actual sent time but the time it was received by me.
Is there any way to fix this ??
1. Read the forum rules
2. This is general, not Q&A. This is a question.
3. Search before you ever ask any questions. See here...

This is a shame. Does handcent or gosms pro solve the issue ?

I tried both on a previous old firmware but not newer firmwares. If you try it let me know the results.
I think we all have the same problem with the time stamps, when the phone has been turned off or without connection. Whenever you receive text messages it writes when you receive them and not when they were sent. It really blows. It it not the same problem as the one you describe though, but the same as AaronUK has
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Everybody's work here is terrific! I have a HSPA+ speed question. I've been playing with my phone today, and noticed when I restore my stock backup I get faster speeds. Stock backup I get 5-7meg download, and on unamed, and ICSrewed I get 1-2.5. I checked and the apk settings are the same across the board. Just curious...
are you running the same modem as stock while on one of the custom roms? Different modems work better in different areas.
Btw this belongs in q /a not dev forum.

Moved. In the future, please do not post questions in the Dev forum, or infractions will be handed out. If you are unsure of where to post, please read the rules of the forum.
Modem=baseband can be found in settings-about phone. First thread in dev section has zips to flash. I flashed mine right over existing rom no wipe and it worked but had to reflash after updating as modem was included in rom. BTW modem=radio also.

there's one thing thats more annoying than someone posting a question in the wrong section or someone not searching....and thats when I see so many replies to a thread all saying the same thing:
'wrong section'
'why post here'
'this is not the right section for this'
yes people, we get it! He posted in the wrong section. Please dont reply with something that everyone else already said ahead of you. Just report the thread and let the mods take care of it

I'm not familiar with the development aspect of modems but just an observation--If the modem is developed for another device then, to me, common sense says it wasnt designed to be used on our phones which is why some things work and others dont. Maybe the signal is different in the US versus International, which is why the voice doesnt work. Who knows...but the bottom line is that we'll need to use the i777 modems.
out of curiosity, why would you want to use the int'l modems, anyway? What benefit do they give you?

Probably because the international model has CM9 and modems made for it. Not a bad idea, can't blame him for wanting it to work

Thank you! The replies are as bad as the misplaced threads! I NEVER say anything. I just report it and move on; which is infinitely more productive than bashing the OP or inquiring as to why they posted in that particular section.

i'm not faulting him for asking, at all. Its a legit question that most people (including myself) dont know the actual answer to. I was just making an educated guess (at least as educated as I can )

I'd disagree. It encourages other people to report posts more and refrain from posting the same "why'd you post here" comments over and over.
If everyone decides to comment on it instead of reporting, it just takes that much longer for it to appear in the correct subforum. And of course, the inevitable flaming continues and the thread ultimately ends up closed.
How is encouraging forum rules unproductive?
It reinforces the point

Ok ok my fault i figured if i ask here its more likely ill get one of the devs looking at my post and get quick answer or tell me how to open dang modem.bin and i can compare i9100 vs i777. u guys could have focused on helping not blaming.

If we can get international modems to work then we wouldnt have capped speeds especially when it comes to upload.

just a guess but if a simple tweak would make it work, it would have been done long ago. So the fact that it still doesnt work, makes me believe that its not possible without major alterations to the int'l modems.
I've seen this in one of the ROMs however does anyone have a flashable zip mod to remove this restriction?

It would get poor reception as the phone uses the headphones as the antennae... A good alternative would be to use the tunein internet radio app
Op, please post in correct area next time, either q&a or general. The development thread is for members who actually develop something. Next time please read the stickys and watch the xda video for noobs on YouTube. Posting in the wring area will probably get you flamed and adds extra work for the moderators.

For future reference....if you have a "?" in your post it very likely doesn't belong in anything BUT Q&A...
My s3 doesn't keep settings after a restart and basically has never been 100% at it. Eg. Ring tones will revert to default, default application settings get forgotten. Phone has been rooted before but actually isn't right now.
Running 4.1.2
I have done a factory data reset.
Any thoughts?

Really? The s3 q&a and troubleshooting forum is the wrong forum?
Since the phone has been rooted im hesitant to send it back. Its actually also had the screen replaced.
Still hopeful someone has better advice than tell me im posting in the wrong forum. This place used to be friendlier than this im sure.
Just saw the link for the lte specific forum. Will repost there.

Not if you have I9300 yes its wrong if you have I9305 really .
Btw, what forum would be a better place for me troubleshooting question?
The I9305 forum Q&A logically .
You had two bits of advice ignore them both or not .

Thanks for the advice. Already took one of them... other one; not sure how my warranty would hold up with being rooted and a screen replaced... sad face.
Considering a cyanogen or perhaps liquidsmooth rom that I've just seen a bit about.
My concern is that even a new rom doesn't wipe or refresh all the parts where things like default settings might be kept during a restart. So hoping some advice comes through in that regard perhaps.. but not in this forum.
