So, I double checked, and several reviews out on the webs noted the ability to use the camera button to activate the camera (even while locked?) and start taking pictures instantly without the need to use the power button. Since unboxing and setting up my phone I have been unable to duplicate this, and I must say it was a feature I was strongly looking forward to.
Anyone attempted this and have success? Is there an option somewhere to enable the ability to do this?
Thanks in advance! Happy unboxing day!

From what I read, you have to unlock it first. D:
If you have the camera on the shortcuts bar then sliding that to the unlock circle will bring up the camera. To access the gallery or home screen it will require you to unlock(face, pattern, pin, ect..)
backedc4 is right, if you have it on the lock screen shortcuts, just slide it open directly. anything else will require an unlock first.
from whatever you are doing with it once unlocked though, just long-press the camera button (all the way down) and it'll bring up the camera.
---
i thought it would be a gimmicky thing, but that long camera-button press rapid-shot photo capture is freaking awesome. i dont know how i ever took decent pictures before!!
Yeah, I knew about that, but I am sad to find out that the claims reviewed online are not holding true. Namely "For starters, that dedicated button lets you access the camera functionality with the phone switched off." (http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/04/htc-evo-4g-lte-preview-video/)
However, upon further research Cnet had the issue as well (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-evo-4g-lte/4505-6452_7-35182267.html) so it would appear moot. Blah! This is most certainly a feature I would like to show up in rooted versions tho, hah
Are we talking screen or security lock here? I'd say if you have a security lock you would not want to be able to bypass it for the camera. Once in the camera all of the photos you have taken are visible. As for screen lock I agree you should be able to bypass it.
hey, it does that if you take off locking
I remember tech blogs complaining about the amount of time they had to hold down the button to activate the camera, but I like it. I find myself accidentally pressing it a bit whenever I try to stretch my right hand up the screen. If it activated on every little press, that'd be really annoying. I haven't gotten to open from the lockscreen though (I have a pattern unlock)... But I don't mind that at all either.

Thanks for the tip. Now I can get into the camera app from where ever I'm at by just holding down the camera button for a few seconds. I love having a dedicated camera button.
I saw it in the reviews, too. Also I saw another thread where it's mentioned. Have you guys tried (while screen off/locked) just holding the button down for about 5sec?

Yeah, no go sadly. It's not that big of an issue to use the shortcut bar from the lockscreen, it really only adds a slight extra motion / time frame, but hey, I had to ask to see if anyone knew different!
I was able to access the camera via the dedicated button while the screen was locked for the first day or two, but at some point it has ceased to work. I have gone through every settings menu I could find to see if I made a change somewhere but have yet to find a reason. It was an awesome feature and I want it back.
I've also noticed various small things different from the first day or two, and I haven't rooted or made significant changes. I get the gut feeling this thing is getting secret silent background updates from either htc or sprint. not happy and worried about rooting because of ths...
anyone know how to check or monitor this??
Whoa the above 2 posts are pretty nuts! Completely silent updates could be quite annoying for people running rooted devices.
exactly, has me worried. I'll start another post about it later

Care to expand on what "small things" you have found that have changed from the first day or two?
Hi all,
When I charge my HP TP running CM9 nightly, a clock screen is displayed automatically. I note that after my screen time out period of five minutes, the screen does power off, however when I wake up in the morning the screen is on displaying the clock screen - I guess email or some other notifications turn the screen back on.
Basically, can I change the behaviour so that when I put the TP onto the Touchstone, nothing special happens and this clock isn't displayed? I have an app that switches the screen off when the case is closed, and essentially this charging behaviour is interfering with this. I don't want the TP clock blazing away lighting the screen up all night.
Thanks,
Andy
Wow some refuse to do any work on their own....
If you want to shut the screen down all you have to do is hit the power button and the screen shuts down
As far as the Desk Clock app... You simply go into app manager and clear the defaults for it

Thank you for your reply - unfortunately the option to clear defaults for the clock is greyed out.

I'm puzzled by your sarcasm - no, I can't figure this out by myself as I can't identify the configurable part of android that triggers this clock front end. I had Googled it but I can't find a suitable answer there either. Whilst I can shut the screen off with the power button, as per my original post when I wake up in the morning the screen has come back on.
Cheers!

Then you have something installed waking your TP that we have no way of troubleshooting without some type of log.... when you shut the screen down there is no reason for Android to turn it back on unless YOU have EXPLICITLY given an app YOU installed permission to do so. As far as the clock... when you set the TP on the Touchstone one of two things happens... a dialog box comes up with the apps that can by default be activated when placed on Touchstone OR YOU HAVE designated a default app to do this....
Now if YOU can't remember which app YOU ALLOWED to run then you have one of two choices.... go through all the apps in app manager clearing all defaults OR wipe all data and start from scratch and pay attention to what you press this time

Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately you are wrong.
I only have the clock app installed that triggers when the device docks - no other apps respond to this event, therefore when I dock the device I don't get presented with the option/choice, it just displays the clock as there is no alternative. I've found the best solution to be to install 'Screen Off ' from the market. This has an option to act on the dock event, and now when I put the device on the dock I get given the choice as to whether to show the clock or to power off the screen. This works pretty much perfectly, and without the clock showing the screen stays off, instead of coming back on randomly after I shut it off - therefore, I don't think that the clock was coming back on before due to notifications from apps/emails, but be cause the clock app itself was triggering - possibly when the device reaches full charge or something and temporarily disconnects from the dock or something, I don't know. In summary, you need more than one app installed that is coded to respond to the dock event, otherwise when you dock the device android just defaults to the dock event and powers the screen back on periodically. I have never explicitly enabled this behaviour, and without installing another app it seemingly cannot be changed or disabled.
I thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, but I think you should learn something from this thread - just because a problem may seem to be user error doesn't necessarily mean that it is - your post is completely wrong which is fine as I appreciate that you are just trying to help, but by getting all aggressive over it you've just ended up looking a little stupid. The forums should be all about helping people, not ridiculing them - hopefully this post will serve to help anyone out with a similar predicament.
Cheers.
Ignore cdzo72 - he's one of the most sarcastic members of this forum. He seems to have a hate on for anyone who has an issue with anything, and can't solve it for themselves. You get used to him, and ignoring him.
I'm glad you found your solution.
Thanks for posting that man, beginning to think it was just me. Guess every forum has one - hopefully if anyone else comes across this thread it might solve their problem too.

The clock app doesn't trigger itself. Mine charges all night and never turns back on. That said, it is almost impossible to move the pad while it's on the TS without charge disconnecting and reconnecting. And that will trigger the clock app. So, if you have the TS on an unstable surface that allows ir to be inadvertently "jiggled", that could cause the clock to turn back on.

Hey Man,
I don't know if it affects other devices to be honest. On my phone the clock app is configurable, but on my Cyanogenmod9 HP TP tablet it isn't something that you can change the behaviour of (if you tap the stock 'Clock' app it just locks the screen and displays a clock, you cant set any options like on my SGSII). I don't know if this is a feature of tablet OS'es in general, or just the CM iteration of Ice Cream Sandwich.
Either way, the 'Screen Off' app references working with a number of docks (blurb specifically references Sony ones) so I'd give it a shot and hopefully it will work for you.
I had that problem too, it was very annoying. I installed dock no op from the market and it finally stopped waking me up. That seems like the only option since cm9 doesn't let you set the dock behavior.
Hello everyone..
I just bought the Mega 6.3 .. and am very happy with it and its running very well and smooth . but just one problem with the notification bar when i pull it down its slow and lagging , not smooth at all. and sometime take long time to drop down.. anyone can help me with this problem if there is a fix for it please reply me... and also sometimes when i press the home bottom to go the home screen , the widgets and the icons on the home screen loading very slow and appear slowly //
Turn animations to .5x instead of x1, or even off completely.
I'm having the same issue. My phone is fast everywhere except when I swipe down the notification bar. It's slow as molasses. It doesn't make any sense because the device is fast everywhere else.
Update: after turning animations off the notification bar is now fast again. I had to reboot for the animation changes to take effect.
Thank you so much for a quick reply, but one more thing i found 3 animation (Window animation scale, transition animation scale, animation duration scale), which one i should turn it off? Or all of them i off it..
Thanks a lot in advance

I turned off all the animation and the notification became smooth and fast but after 2 days it got slow and lagging again, I don't know why, i kept the animation off all of them, please guys i need help with this problem, i really like this phone and this is the only problem i have it.....

Do you have all the features enabled like smart stay, multiwindow, etc? Check the running apps to see if you have lots of apps running in the background. You can use an app called Greenify to stop apps running in the background and slowing your phone.
I turned off and smart stay and also the multiwindow since the first day i bought the phone ,but i only turn on the air view, and i checked my background apps that running are not that much, btw my phone is NOT rooted, and it's ridiculous from Samsung that i can't use all the features of the phone that they advertised for such model and i even not root my phone or change anything, ..

Since the days of wm5 phones have been a compromise, large screen high power phones have awful battery life, we have got a good mix, large screen with reasonable performance and great battery life. I am very happy with the balance. If you want to run all the functions you are going to need the note 3. All IMHO of course

I don't have problems with the battery life , and i don't
care about the features i only use the air viewy, but i only have one problem with the notification lagging and slow when dropping it down, .. Even after turning off the animation scale..
I just wondering Samsung after making a phone with all these features they testing it and how come they didn't notice the lagging or maybe they did notice and they said it's okay people will buy it anyway and they will give us their money..
I like Samsung cuz i know they are the best in my opinion but sometimes for a small easy things they make me hate them...

I never had problems with the notification lagging or being slow when dropping it down.
I don't think it's a common problem so it might just be your phone's set-up.

Tap each of these to show the options. I suggest choosing 0.5x or turning them off.
Check this out. There is no Developer options in the "More" tab??

Does anyone else have this issue?
I know you can select the Flash as Auto / ON / or OFF... when I select Flash ON and tap the screen to focus on an area, I would normally suspect to flash to light up so I can focus on an area. However it does not come on at all. But will come on to take the picture, but the picture will be blurry because it cannot focus on the spot I want.
Love the phone overall, bought it through Samsung. Just waiting for a good root to come along the way.

I noticed the same but if I are the picture, the flash turns on and the autofocus is working and after the folks is right the photo is taken.
But as you said no flash when using tap to focus. That was there on the S8.
Could this be a bug in the OS? Haven't tried contacting Samsung yet to report this, but wanted to make sure if others are having the same issue too.

Yes it should be. Or Samsung made this.
Please report it to them.
Same here. Flash does not come on when you tap the screen on auto flash.
Spoke with a customer expert and even tried the phone in safe mode as he suggested. He stated that if it existed in safe mode, it is a software issue. And yes the issue stays within safe mode, his only suggestion was to take it to a Samsung Repair center. In my case, I will just wait for a hotfix or patch. Unless xda beats samsung to it first haha.
Got a reply again from Samsung care page, apparently the features were removed on the s9. I guess they are now wanting to reimplement it since most are complaining on it.
Found out if you want the flash to come on before taking a picture, just tap the shutter button for 1 second and then slide your finger off it and the flash will go off without taking a picture.

But that activates burst shot. And if sliding it, it would create a floating button. Unless I'm missing the ''shutter'' button you are talking about.
Hi,
Is there a way to deactivate the fade in animation when waking up the screen, i find it very annoying . I like it to be instantaneous.
I know is possible to reduce the speed animation in developer options but it does mess with other animations not only the screen wake up.
This annoys me, too. There is a slow fade in when hitting the power button to go to the lock screen and using the fingerprint sensor to go straight to the home screen.
I believe this is my only gripe with the device. My Mate 9 was instantaneous on both fronts.
you must ctivate "developer options" menu (it is hidden under "about phone", you can easily find instructions for activation)
and there you shall find the settings for all parts of animation (transition, etc); if you set them on zero, then everything will become instant-quick, no fade-in etc

As I said in my previous post, the problem when reducing speed animation is that other system transitions like multitasking and dropping notifications panel are also affected and look horrible.
I dont know why samsung dont offer the option of deactivating this annoying fade in

As far as I know sammy are the only ones to implement this "feature" in their smartphones ....
I would have switched to another phone juste because of that "feauture" but there are many good things in the s9+ that make me keep it.
