As above, is there any way to do this?
An xposed setting maybe?
Edit Solved... Gravity Box setting under Display Tweaks / Unplug turns on screen
I KNOW that i saw an option to do this in a Sony app. It was either in the STAMINA settings or the Smart Connect app. I remember seeing it and thought "Hmm... nah, i don't want to disable that".

Yeah I thought Id seem it somewhere without using exposed, but I'm buggered if I could find it today. In the end I just concluded it must have been in a custom rom I'd flashed to try out.
Yeah, i searched for it now, but i give up. I bet it'll show up when i least expect it, like in a year or something

Either that or I've already considered the Sony app as bloat and frozen it with TB :silly:
Anyway problem solved. Loving Gravitybox

I installed GravityBox but I don't know now whether to keep Xblast Tools or not... after all, they both do almost the same things...
Also, it does work with stock rom, but Pie Controls (I love them, but the play store ones are fugly) just work when both status and nav bar are showing... tried all possible combinations but nothing..
Anyway, I thought for a second to discard the led when charging but then again 4 out 5 times I plug it in the full dark and the led is the only thing telling me it's charging...

After playing with gravity box I uninstalled Xblast and the advanced power menu modules.
Is there something in Xblast that is missing from GravityBox... Im not a huge fan of Pie control. However I have set it to pie control when in expanded desktop mode and it works just fine, but not from the bottom border, I had to set it from the top border :good:
Edit, I set the trigger area to 15 and its working just fine from the bottom borner now
I tried it too and it was working... until I decided to change the transparency of the status bar to 100%...
Then, SystemUI stopped every 2 seconds, so I deselected the module and restarted, cleared cache and data or Gravitybox, reselected it, restarted.
SystemUI stopped like crazy again.
And then (who knows why) I pressed (I'd say involuntarily, but that was not the case) the "expanded desktop" button thinking that maybe the mess had to do only with the status bar.
Needless to say that it hadn't.
At that time SOD like crazy, I mean I turned on/off like 15 times to make it work again.
Eventually the screen (with SystemUI error) came up, I deselected and uninstalled the Gravitybox module and made a reservation with my tattooist for a tattoo on my forearm that says: "If it's supposed to work on AOSP ROMs ONLY, and you have a [email protected]£&ING stock ROM, DON'T INSTALL IT!".
Seen that I crapped in my pants tonight too, I'd say it's time to go to bed. (And unlocking the bootloader comes closer and closer...).

I had the system UI thing with Gravity Box a few weeks ago before I had unlocked the bootloader and I crapped myself as well..
Happier these days with my bootloader unlocked and regular nandroid backups.

I've put this in the Development section because whilst it is almost fully functional, it still needs a lot of development. Please be aware of this when you download it. I am not to be held responsible for anything that may happen as a result of running this app.
Requirements:
Root Access & a Custom ROM (StreakDroid 1.8.0 recommended (CONFIRMED WORKING ON 1.8.0))
Built under a 2.2 framework. If you are running anything pre-2.2 please be aware it may not work.
Please remember to remove all previous versions of the app before installing.
Simply open the app and press the "Menu" button. I hope you can figure the rest out! Enjoy!
"LED Notification FREE" has been uploaded in the Market. It has full functionality and it Ad Supported.
Please be aware that this version includes an "AdBlocker Check". This will block the app from opening if you have an adblocker installed on your phone. Sorry about this but i hate adblockers Alternatively, you can just remove all instances of Admob from your Hosts file.
Code:
[I][B][COLOR="blue"]QUICK HANDCENT FIX[/COLOR][/B]:
Open Handcent, press 'Menu > Settings > Notification settings > Popup settings'.
[B]MAKE SURE[/B] 'Screen on for popup' is [B]UNCHECKED[/B].
Handcent wont interfere with my app from then on :D[/I]
NEW TO 2.0.1
Asks for SU Access when the app first loads Fixes some weird error that happens every now and again.
Completely re-coded the SMS receiver. Much smoother now!
SMS and Gmail Notifications can be turned on or off
New settings page - done properly now, wont save anything to sdcard [you can delete your STREAKLED folder now!] Press the 'menu' button when you open the app for settings.
Permissions tweaked (should be less LED problems)
KNOWN BUGS
Changing orientation during the pattern causes problems. Just don't do it!
Notifications overwrite each other. So if an SMS message arrives and then a Gmail, only the Menu button will be lit, and vice versa.
Services cannot be stopped (only by uninstalling) FIXED - 2.0
Sometimes all the buttons will end up being lit, not sure why. [SHOULD BE FIXED]
TODO
Add options for turning the SMS and Gmail notifications on and off DONE - 2.0
Have different patterns for each DONE - 1.3
Improve the UI (sort of) DONE - 2.0
Improve the pattern flashing sequence (sort of) DONE - 2.0
Clean up the code (WIP )DONE - 2.0
Fix orientation issue
This will ALWAYS be available for free on here, on Modaco and on my website (see sig) but i have uploaded a 'donate' version on the Android Market Place priced at £1.50, just incase you fancy buying me a beer
Enjoy

Requirements: Root Access (tested on 2.1 but build under a 1.6 framework so it should work on 1.6)
All you have to do is run the application, hit the home button and receive a text (or send yourself one). If your phone is locked it will wake up and dim the screen and flash the home/menu/back LEDs in a nice pattern and then keep the screen dimmed until you unlock the phone manually.
The only problem is that you will receive a Force Close error message and you will then have the re-open the app for it to work again. I am trying to fix this but will not be able to look into it for a few days so i thought i would release what i've done so far.
I will be adding settings and more patterns as soon as i can fix this FC error.
Enjoy

Nice work.
Just out of interest though, what's the dangers of having the screen on dim all night if I get a text message at stupid o'clock?
Wouldn't want to burn anything on my screen if that is possible.

Screen burn is an issue on LCD screens, hence why i set it to do a dim wake lock instead of a full brightness one. Saying that, i have absolutely no idea whether screen burn would still occur but ill test it tonight and report back
On a positive note i have fixed the FC error and will release the fully working version tomorrow!!
Nice work dude ! Look forward to a full release tomorrow.

No, i'm afraid not.
Without Root Access it will probably just force close.
Currently in the process of adding more LED patterns
It also now wakes the phone, unlocks the phone and displays an "SMS Message Received" popup which it then hangs at until you close it.
Do you guys think this is better or should I make it lock the screen instead?
What else should i add/change?

I'd prefer it stayed locked, also if I read this thread correctly, it leaves the screen on (but dimmed?) is that true? I would need it to kill the screen, because as noted, it could kill your battery if you went a long time w/o clearing the alert.
Nice work so far though...

Yeah, that's the only problem.
unfortunately, killing the screen freezes the LEDs in whatever state they're in, completely defying the point of the app
What i could do though, is wake up the screen, flash the LEDs but leave one on and turn the screen back off. This would turn everything off apart from that 1 LED and you could use different LEDs for different notifications. I'll try that out later.
Yeah, that seems like a good idea. Maybe the Back LED for missed SMS, the Menu LED for missed call. Something like that.
That would be cool, I'll await your work and give it a try.
Well, it turns out that works miles better than what i was trying before.
Basically, it now turns the screen on, keeps it locked, flashes the LEDs, turns the screen back off and leaves the home LED on.
Give me about 10 mins and i'll put up a working version. No FC error this time
Can't wait for this!

I haven't tried this yet, but I just want to say THANKS! No notification light was driving me crazy! I'm gonna install it now. I like that it would kill the screen but leave the LED light on. That's perfect!
**EDIT**
Well, it didn't work perfectly. Here's what happened on my Beta Streak....
With locking disabled (I use the 'NO LOCK' widget), it turned the screen on and said 'SMS received' and the home LED was on, for about 1-2 minutes, then both went off. When I turned back on the screen and read the msg, the LED went out.
With locking enabled, like most people would be using the app, the screen turned on for a few seconds while the LED pulsed, then both went out. No notification. When I unlock and read the msg, the home LED stays on. I have to 'clear' the app in the notification tray and lock then unlock the screen to make the home LED go out.
Seems like they're little tweaks that could be needed. If you can make this work and be functional, I'll donate to your Paypal! Again, thanks for your work on this project!!
Yeah, it's still pretty much in it's 'Alpha' stage
Cheers, for the feedback, i'll look into the errors.
I know that if the screen is unlocked the Home LED will stay on until you lock/unlock the screen, but that should be an easy fix (hopefully), and i've not set up the Thread's quite right i don't think which could be causing the timing errors.
I'll be spending all of tomorrow getting this thing working so i'll report back
Awesome! You are the man!
A thought for down the road development:
Earlier today when I was thinking about this, I imagined an interface where the user could "record" their own flash sequence for each type of notification they had - email, sms, mms, missed call, etc. Just choose which notification they want to specify, click record, then tap the capacitive buttons in the sequence you want them to light up, then end the recording. Interval timing could be recorded or specified manually. Just a few ideas!
Thanks so much for this. I'll give it a run soon.
Awesome work. Wanted something like this. I hope you will be able to add notifications for misssed calls and gmail as well. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I just got my note and coming from the atrix with a notification light, I'm pretty let down this doesn't have one.
Does anyone know of an app or mod that can perhaps light up the soft keys instead? I know you can for the nexus S

you can use the NoLED app from the market but beware that you need to test and configure it to best liking, cause even though it might look like the screen is off is not, it puts dots in the screen as notification, so for the time being before you decide to flash a custom rom, give it a try, I used it for a bit but noticed that if I had a notification on for a long time it killed my battery significantly.

This. I would get emails in the middle of the night, triggered the NoLED icon and keep my screen on all night. I would go to bed with 90+% and it would drain to about 30% in a few hours. Thank god it had the schedule function so you can disable it when you don't plan on caring about a notification.
Missed Message Flasher, which works for a dozen or two apps and general notifications. For Calendar notifications only I've switched over to Calendar Snooze because it gives more options for vibration, plus adds many options to snooze that the stock Calendar doesn't. I still use MMF for text and some other notifications.
Thanks to all the quick replies. I might try MMF, but will probably just end up rooting/flashing. I cant help myself lol. This note needs ICS...badly
NoLED has worked fine for me for well over a year now. I think the propblem people are encountering is not that their screen is on, it's that their phone is not able to enter deep sleep mode. The technology behind the screen is what allows this app to work without zapping the battery within an hour. Also most people charge at night so this is not an issue. Also noLED has a widget that makes turning the feature on and off a simple task. My phone lasted over 24 hours with no charging and had the noLED notification on at night so there may be more at work for those having issues with it, as I said I only saw it prevented deep sleep but did not trigger "screen on" time in stats as only a few pixels were actually on. I do only use the dots, not the big icons.
Unfortunatly, noLED would be your best bet at this time, IMO. BLN support is sketchy at best. Just make sure you have noLED setup so that it won't keep the screen on for hours on end and your fine. I tried to get BLN support working for the longest time, it was flakey at best on some roms, and all out didn't work with ohters that claimed to have support for it. And with ICS coming out today ( or so they say, look in the dev section for the posts ), BLN support won't exist anyway for a bit

BLN control seems to work best for me. Bought the pro version so I could have even more control over the keys
Hi all,
When I charge my HP TP running CM9 nightly, a clock screen is displayed automatically. I note that after my screen time out period of five minutes, the screen does power off, however when I wake up in the morning the screen is on displaying the clock screen - I guess email or some other notifications turn the screen back on.
Basically, can I change the behaviour so that when I put the TP onto the Touchstone, nothing special happens and this clock isn't displayed? I have an app that switches the screen off when the case is closed, and essentially this charging behaviour is interfering with this. I don't want the TP clock blazing away lighting the screen up all night.
Thanks,
Andy

I'm puzzled by your sarcasm - no, I can't figure this out by myself as I can't identify the configurable part of android that triggers this clock front end. I had Googled it but I can't find a suitable answer there either. Whilst I can shut the screen off with the power button, as per my original post when I wake up in the morning the screen has come back on.
Cheers!

Then you have something installed waking your TP that we have no way of troubleshooting without some type of log.... when you shut the screen down there is no reason for Android to turn it back on unless YOU have EXPLICITLY given an app YOU installed permission to do so. As far as the clock... when you set the TP on the Touchstone one of two things happens... a dialog box comes up with the apps that can by default be activated when placed on Touchstone OR YOU HAVE designated a default app to do this....
Now if YOU can't remember which app YOU ALLOWED to run then you have one of two choices.... go through all the apps in app manager clearing all defaults OR wipe all data and start from scratch and pay attention to what you press this time

Thank you for your reply, but unfortunately you are wrong.
I only have the clock app installed that triggers when the device docks - no other apps respond to this event, therefore when I dock the device I don't get presented with the option/choice, it just displays the clock as there is no alternative. I've found the best solution to be to install 'Screen Off ' from the market. This has an option to act on the dock event, and now when I put the device on the dock I get given the choice as to whether to show the clock or to power off the screen. This works pretty much perfectly, and without the clock showing the screen stays off, instead of coming back on randomly after I shut it off - therefore, I don't think that the clock was coming back on before due to notifications from apps/emails, but be cause the clock app itself was triggering - possibly when the device reaches full charge or something and temporarily disconnects from the dock or something, I don't know. In summary, you need more than one app installed that is coded to respond to the dock event, otherwise when you dock the device android just defaults to the dock event and powers the screen back on periodically. I have never explicitly enabled this behaviour, and without installing another app it seemingly cannot be changed or disabled.
I thank you for taking the time to reply to my post, but I think you should learn something from this thread - just because a problem may seem to be user error doesn't necessarily mean that it is - your post is completely wrong which is fine as I appreciate that you are just trying to help, but by getting all aggressive over it you've just ended up looking a little stupid. The forums should be all about helping people, not ridiculing them - hopefully this post will serve to help anyone out with a similar predicament.

The clock app doesn't trigger itself. Mine charges all night and never turns back on. That said, it is almost impossible to move the pad while it's on the TS without charge disconnecting and reconnecting. And that will trigger the clock app. So, if you have the TS on an unstable surface that allows ir to be inadvertently "jiggled", that could cause the clock to turn back on.

Hey Man,
I don't know if it affects other devices to be honest. On my phone the clock app is configurable, but on my Cyanogenmod9 HP TP tablet it isn't something that you can change the behaviour of (if you tap the stock 'Clock' app it just locks the screen and displays a clock, you cant set any options like on my SGSII). I don't know if this is a feature of tablet OS'es in general, or just the CM iteration of Ice Cream Sandwich.
Either way, the 'Screen Off' app references working with a number of docks (blurb specifically references Sony ones) so I'd give it a shot and hopefully it will work for you.
I had that problem too, it was very annoying. I installed dock no op from the market and it finally stopped waking me up. That seems like the only option since cm9 doesn't let you set the dock behavior.
Hi guys. Weird problem with my S3. Happened just after the last firmware update which added the notification bar brightness control. If I plug my S3 into the AC charger the screen auto off does not work. It will stay on even if the screen is locked. When the battery is fully charged, the screen comes on and does not go off as well. Screen shot of my system is included. It works fine on battery power.

Just a guess and I can't remember if this option exists on the stock firmware as I am running CM but in your settings go to development options and see if there is an option like "stay awake , screen will never sleep when charging" if there is try toggling it a few times and leave it un-ticked

Nope. No such option in Developer Options. I just charge the phone the moment I get home now and unplug it before I go to bed so that I don't end up with some screen burn-in from the AMOLED display.
Okay sorry I don't really know what to suggest then apart from backing up with kies then trying a factory reset always worked for me on stock.

Oh, would rather hate to do that, but if it works, I guess I'll give it a try. Not much really on my phone, just a bunch of pics and vids of the kids which I can easily back up. Well have a go when I get back home this evening.

Factory reset will not fix the problem. I had the same problem when I updated the last time. Download "extended controls "from the play store and use the widget tha keeps screen on while charging to deactivate it.
Found the culprit. It was HD Widgets. It was the most recently updated app on my S3. Removed, restarted and it's okay now. I was using HDW for the BT toggle widget, went back to my trusty Extended Controls and used the EC widget and everything is fine now. Thanks all. Will email the developer and let them know of the problem.

I don't have Extended Controls or HD Widgets.....and my screen stays on when fully charged. it wakes my husband up at night. any thoughts?
I think I may have found the problem....but i'm currently testing to see if it is or not.
I thought maybe it was "bedside" an app that silences stuff at night.
For me the problem was Smart stay feature under Settings/Display. Once I turned off that the device can turn off the display while charging. This feature used to work great for me with the 4.0.4 firmware that I was using. Once upgraded to 4.1 (H3G) the issue started.
Thanks

Is there a way to turn the hardware buttons into the notification light instead of the Power button led? I have a case that covers the power button and miss the notification blink that I had on the Atrix HD. Thanks in advance.
There's an older app for that on the play store. Called LG notification lights or something like that. Doesn't officially support OG, but might be worth a try. I don't recall any talk of the feature... Probably because we have a notification light. It was popular on the i777 though.

Thanks. I'll have to check that out. The only reason I want it is because of the case I have. :good:
I have confirmed that LG Touch LED Notifications by Martin Börjesson works on my E970 with KitKat AOSP 4.4.2. I have the Diztronic TPU case that covers the notification light. When I get a notification it will vibrate first (can be adjusted), then light the capacitive buttons. Perfect!

I used to have a Samsung Moment that did not have a dedicated notification light, the Devs used to do kernel edits that allowed for the BLN app by Neldar to work.
Also, just in case there is anyone like me who keeps their phone on vibrate but still wants notification lights for Gmail without the vibrate notification, do the following within the Gmail app:
Press hardware menu button or three squares menu button in top right of Gmail app to access Settings;
Select your connected Gmail account;
Leave Notifications box checked, press Inbox sound & vibrate;
Press Sound, select Silent;
Make sure Vibrate is unchecked.
What I would love to see is the ability to assign up to three types of notifications to the three capacitive buttons that we have.
Example:
Missed call = Back button
SMS message = Home button
Gmail message = Menu button
Missed call + SMS + Gmail = All three buttons lit. Hmm... maybe I will email this suggestion to the Developer of Trigger - location profiles to see if they could add this sort of functionality to their already awesome app.
Does anyone know if the E970 has one LED light to illuminate all three capacitive buttons, or are they three separate LEDs? Edit: Boo! Only has two... http://imgur.com/a/ydoJb
I've been using an app called ButtonLED I found on XDA since ICS days and still works with KitKat roms. The GUI is pretty basic and not the prettiest but the app is functional. When you turn the logs on, it will track what app or keywords appear in the status bar. You can then go in and add that app or keyword to be excluded and not trigger the notification. I'm going to check out the LG app and see if that performs better (battery drain, etc). Here's the link for the info on ButtonLED... http://www.xda-developers.com/android/buttonled-turns-your-hardware-buttons-into-a-notification-led/ Even though the app is not being updated, I've been running 1.6 with no issues.

didn't work on mine unfortunately. I'd tried it a couple of weeks ago while looking for solutions on this issue (along with many other apps). I'm on SnowJB. So far the only one that has worked is using Xposed+GravityBox... the problem with that one is that it seems to link the side notification LED red light to the front softkeys LEDs, so when the phone is charging and the red LED is flashing on/off the front LEDs flash as well. This bothers me because once I go to sleep and charge the phone the white front LEDs do seem very bright... plus I don't like the fact of having them flashing every night for 8 hours straight, gives me the impression that it'll cause them to get damaged much sooner than normal since they weren't really desinged to flash like that. There is an option on GravityBox that says DISABLE LED FLASHING WHILE CHARGING... which I thought could've helped to prevent that charging flashing but at least in my case that option did nothing,
It would be awesome if someone could come up with a mod for this. Even better if someone knew what file could be edited through root browser to make the red light flash faster on notifications.

Install the button led app. It works.

You could probably do that with Tasker in the Play store. $2.99 though.

Thx....
didn't work either... which version did you install? (I saw there were several on the dropbox download link).
The problem I have with these apps is that they interrupt the normal function of the softkey lights... for example I like to have these lights always ON while my screen is ON as well, I don't like them to time out... and there is an option withing stock Android to set them up like that.... but when I use an app to use the LEDS for notifications for some reason it disables the stock preset and shutts them off entirely while the screen is on... I kinda gave up on this. I'd just be so happy if I could modify the frequency of the RED LED on the power button on notifications.

I use the same setup with cap keys always on. That's the downside all apps/mods have regarding the keys getting disabled when the screen is turned on after a notification. Simply turn the screen off and back on to reset the keys and they will turn back on/reset. I'm using 1.6.
