Will my S II sdcard work if no sim card inserted? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung S II and no matter what I do I can't get it to read the sdcard. I've tried several sdcards but still the same result, it won't recognize it.
The only thing I can think of (apart from a faulty sdcard slot) is that I don't have a sim card in the phone.
Does the S II need a sim card inserted in order for the sdcard to work?
If not, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the sdcard to work?
BTW the phone is totally stock and it's Australian, unlocked but originally with Optus.
One strange thing is that everything in the back of the phone seems upside down. The battery contacts are on the left not the right, the sdcard goes in upside down and on the right not the right way up and on the left. The sdcard slot is directly underneath the sim card.
I hope so someone can help.
cheers

I no longer use my S2 so it has no sim in it, popped a sdcard in just now & can read/access it just fine.
Sticker on the phone chassis under the battery, what does it say ? (Where did you get the phone ?).

Card not reading is non of the sim card business.

Thanks.
Sticker says as follows:
MODEL: GT-I9100
SSN: -19100GSMH
RATED: 3.7V
FDD ID: A9LGT9100
and a big CE0168

Remove your IMEI. They can be nicked/re-used.
Where did you get the phone - reason I ask is your comment about battery contacts/position of sim slot/etc.

Thanks I removed the IMEI.
I bought it from a samsung reseller. I was told the reason the contacts and sim card are like they are is because it was originally made for use with the Optus network

Really ? Interesting. Reason I ask is we've seen our share of knock-offs on here over the past 2+ yrs, and they tend to have differences like the ones you've mentioned. Or they can sometimes be other SGS2 variants even though they're branded as I9100's.
Re: the SD problem, if it were me, try the obvious first - try it with a sim. After that, I'd probably do a clean install of stock, even though your phone already is running stock/hasn't been 'messed with', or even try a factory reset first.
Obviously with something like this you're rather limited with what you can do (you're stuck with things you can try on the firmware side), if that doesn't fix things, send it back to the seller/Samsung for warranty service if your warranty is still good, otherwise take it to a local mobile repair shop for diagnosis.

I've already tried the factory reset but made no difference. I think the problem is a hardware fault because I got my son to take a look at it and he couldn't get the sdcard to stay in the slot, it just kept springing out. Putting the sim cards in does keep the sdcard in the slot but it still doesn't get recognized by the phone.
I contacted the reseller and it looks like I'll be sending it back to be replaced under warranty.
Thanks for all the help.
cheers

No probs. Best of luck.

Back Key not responding. Big retailer possibly selling 2nd hand phones as new.

Got my SGS2 one day ago and I am pretty sure i will be asking for a replacement tomorrow.
BACK KEY does not respond properly. I need to insist sometimes touching it over 20 times before it can notice it. The touch screen and the button on the left work perfectly.
I also found that the metal strip over the SIM card slot had fingerprints on it, which i think should not be the case since workers at the factory use gloves.
Another detail. Even though the box of the phone was sealed, the girl at the shop insisted on open it to make sure everything was in...
I am buying from the biggest mobile phone retailer in my country. I will be reporting further later on. I am afraid this is gonna be a long story for me .

I will try to get more evidence of their wrongdoing, when things are more clear then I will say out the name of the retailer to alert other consumers
The problem is that the Back Key responds fine during long periods. I have not yet found the circumstances that trigger the unresponsiveness.
So this is gonna be tricky to show at the shop, if I m lucky they will see immediately.
But, I keep on wondering whether it is acceptable or not that the phone had fingerprints in the SIM card slot.
The seal say "do not accept if seal is broken". it was not broken, because it was put there by the retailer

A "big retailer" has no business in providing dodgy second-hand phones.
At worst it's likely you got a phone someone had opened and tinkered with in the shop. Beyond that, the assistant could even have picked up a device which was returned by someone and by mistake assumed it was a new phone.
I also had an issue where I didn't have the microSD card in the box. Now, considering the box is sealed with the black security sticker, it would be pretty hard to get the microSD card out. I didn't check the security sticker because I was too desperate to get the phone out and start using it.
You don't have distance selling rights in this case so you have a hard task ahead of you - because you could have just returned it within 14 days had you bought it online or over the phone, now it's just your word against the retailers.
It seems that the issue comes after the screen has been on for a while. Initially i thought it only came when using the camera, or in settings, but I just now it's happened when i was browsing sms.
This is the 1st time I use samsung or Android. Is this kind of thing common?
I have contacted Samsung... the girls told me to go back to the shop (because i got the phone only 2 days ago) and that it is not normal that the phone had fingerprints in the sim card slot.

Totally correct. If you only just got it and it doesn't work, take it back to the shop and just be polite but firm. They have to replace it if you say there's a fault.
Thanks all for ur replies
Because I have never used Android before I was thinking that maybe the Back Key has a different behavior than the left key in order to prevent accidental touch.
Otherwise the phone is fine. It has the infamous yellowish left side defect, but I can live with it.
At the operator, i was told that it is common practice to open the box to check everything is in, at least for this retailer... is it really common that factory workers forget to put all the stuff in
I keep on testing and getting mad at this, before going to the shop

That's down to the supplier. That's why you'll get a phone from provider A with a 8GB card, or from provider B with a 16GB card (for example).

Oh I see, Thought I had been short changed as I didn't get a micro sd with mine from O2
I have since bought a 16gb class 10 but to be honest I am not sure that it is being used as everything goes on to the internal sd storage with plenty of space to spare.

Yeah, I used to think it was down to the manufacturer, but when I got the HD2 I got a sleeve with it, but lots of people on xda were a bit miffed because they didn't have one. Also, SD cards ranged from 2GB to 16GB (possibly 32GB - can't remember), depending on who you got it from.
I didn't get an SD card with my SGS2 either, so I just sold my HD2 with the 2GB one that I got with it and kept the 16GB one for myself.

This one came without microsd. I asked the girl if the phone come with one while she was inspecting the box, and because she did not know she was going to open the phone, but i told her I preferred to check by myself.

Just back from the shop. Their attention was excellent. The phone will be replaced as soon as they get more units.
The thing is that 2.5 weeks ago they told me sgs2 are sold out. 10 days ago in another shop of the same retailer I paid for one to pick up 10 days later (i thought because they were waiting for the new batch). But the supply of sgs2 has not yet arrived. So the phone was one of the last sgs2 they had in the whole city. This usually means more probability that the phone has some problem.
The guy at the shop told me that it is not normal that the phone had fingerprints.
Frankly, i thought this would be much more troublesome and i am now convinced that this retailer is not doing things wrong. I think I will change the name of the thread if possible to something like"when u dont get what u expected from a big retailer".
My suspicions are the product of one bad experience with their technical support. Also, I am paranoid ever since I was offered an 8gb Nokia N8 from a operator (never seen other than 16gb).
Hopefully the next batch will also come with amoled screens and samsung's renderer chip.

This code doesn't work on my phone
UPDATE
No one knows when the next batch of sgs2 will come to this EU city where they are sold out since few weeks ago.
In the meanwhile I have been using the phone and for few days I thought the problem was gone as the back key was working fine (responding as well as the left key), but then I charged the phone and for first time used it while charging. Very soon after plugging the charger, the back key was almost not responding at all.
If unresponsiveness only happened during the first minutes of the charging process, I could take it. However I first noticed the issue while in normal use.
Lately my screen is taking nearly 90% of the battery consumption (just browsing use), which could explain why the issue did not appear. But now I have just found a way to copy files to the internal card of the phone and I will be testing with hr movies.
I doubt it is just a problem on my phone, so I would appreciate that someone reports how does his back key respond during the first minutes of the charging process
Thanks

No SIM CARD error Galaxy Note

Ok guys i know there are a few threads already created for this error, however; I haven't seen a solution yet, So i'm creating this thread in hopes that we can compile all the information about this, and maybe find a solution,
Here's the story, I bought an Unlocked Galaxy note SGH-i717D on ebay about a year ago, the phone was working like a charm and it loved it , then a few months later i started getting a "NO SIM Inserted" error message.
The SIM card was pretty old so I went to my carrier and changed it. That seemed to do the trick and it worked fine until a few weeks ago, when the damn error showed up again. I'm literally getting this error message every day, making the phone impossible to use.
I've tried EVERYTHING:
1- I ruled out the SIM card being faulty since it's new and it works on other phones
2- Made sure the SIM was making contact with the pins
3- Put Scotch tape on the SIM to make it fit better on the SIM slot
3- Deleted cache
4- Rooted my phone and installed titanium backup to delete all user and system app cache
5- flashed the original rom back into my phone
Nothing seems to work (the titanium backup method works for a few hours/days) so please if any of you know the solution to this issue please let me know.
I highly appreciate any help!
Sim card slots go bad some times. A samsung repair shop can replace it in minutes.

yup i've read a lot about it, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the hardware, cuz it works fine when I delete the cache, i've read it has to do with the 3g/4g band the phone is working with, that may cause the issue, but then again nobody's been able to confirm this.
Having the same problem.
No SIM
Baseband: Unknown
IMEI: Unknown
Can't restore with KIES.
Mine was under warranty so I just returned it for an exchange. Got a new SIM, no changes. A factory reset fixed it for a short period.

So I rooted my phone and installed titanium backup like i mentioned on my first post, there's an option on Titanium backup called CLEAR cache for all user and system apps, that seems to do the trick at least for a few hours and some time days.
Sounds like what you guys may need is the sim card port replacement. whatever you do do not send your phone to samsung if you arent under warranty, you will be broke when your done with them. the part is 7$ including shipping on ebay, you can type in sim card port to find it. it is very easy to install, if you dont feel comfortable you can bring it to a shop.

You can easily find the parts for the tmobile version too. Ebay is where I start looking for parts.
Hi i am having the same issue on my Galaxy Note i717R (Canadian Version - originally from Rogers Network) , would appreciate if you could share a solution with me too .
This happened on my i717 just after warranty ran out (of course). It first started off with losing the use of 4g so I couldnt make calls and only could use lte data. Then the radio would stop working and nothing worked. I then restarted my phone and no sim card inserted error. Eventually it would work again but last night I was using the phone and data with no problem but nothing can fix the error today. I'm stuck using the desire HD unless I can figure this out.

I've had this same problem. Reset system and use caches with Titanium Backup but this didn't last. Reset to the original ROMs (Samsung update to Android 4.1 ) did not help. Finally I bought and replace the sim and microsdcard reader (which was remarkably easy to do), This didnt help either. Anyone have a solution?

WTF? it seems like its a software issue then, this is so weird! I read somewhere that it may be the band the phone works with, I'm in Costa Rica so the 3g, 4g bands that we use here may be a bit different and could be causing the problem, then again i know NOTHING about cell phone band frequencies....
This is what's been working for me, I delete cache using titanium back up and then leave the phone off through the night, this method seems to work for a a few weeks maybe a month and when i get the error message again i repeat the process. Also make sure the pins on the sim tray are touching the sim card I noticed on my phone they were a little low so i took a needle and lift them up a bit.
Anyways I really got sick of the error, so I'm changing the sim card tray, if that doesn't work I'm getting rid of this phone.
replaced sim tray and problem is still there...wtf

I was having the same problem. The error would hapoen 10+ times a day sometimes.
I replaced the sim card reader, stil happened. Flashed new rom and modem, didn't fix thr problem.
Started rooting around, thought that maybe the piece of case that sits under the leading edge of the sim card lifts it up, occasionally breaking sim contact when it flexed.
Took a screwdriver and bent the three contacts out some more, now it only happens occasionally.
I think I may be onto something here.

Plz Help, Att Htc One "NO SIM ERROR" Tape fix doesnt work!

Hello, im new here but I have seen over the years that this is the place to come to fix cell phone issues and the such. My issue is this, I have just received an ATT HTC ONE, I bought it off Ebay. The phone itself phisically is in mint condition, but the problem is whenever I put a sim card in it, it just wont read it. Im overseas, I have already bought the unlock code for the phone but I get no chance to enter it because the phone wont detect a sim no matter what I do. I have tries puting several different sim cards and no go, I even had a spare ATT sim card and no go. I have just tried the "tape fix" but the phone wont recognize my sim. Is there anything else that I can try or do? I have flashed phone software in the past (droid dna) so if thats what would take to fix this I would do it. Im overseas and returning this to ebay for a refund would not be an option for me. Any help would be greatly apreciated.
I had the same issue and it solved after they replaced the sim tray, but I bought the phone from ATT so I was under warranty.
You might try to get it repaired there, but they might charge you. Or try buying a replacement sim tray off ebay or amazon (I don't know if they sell it or not)

Sim cards can go bad as well. I would go to an AT&T store and they will replace your sim card for free.
Thanks, I did try several sim cards that I had lying around and none of them worked. I have just gotten of the phone with HTC tech support and they are sending me a replacemente sim tray, hope that fixes the problem. Will have to wait 4 looooong weeks without a phone tough...

You might want to flash the stock RUU, might have a bad radio flash or something odd.

Oh..ok.. well I dont think new sim tray would be the solution.
I have two HTC One. And I tried putting the sim tray of working HTC ONE into this one and nothing happened.. same issue.
I have couple queries though : Was ur phone's software modified in any way when u recieved it ? I mean was the phone unlocked, rooted etc ?
If yes, did u tried flashing a RUU on it and see if it solves the issue
So I finally found the solution to my problem.. apparently its something related to sim not aligning properly in the socket.
Tape-fix didnt worked for me too and nor did the RUU. Then I tried something different.. I had my iphone 5's nano sim and put it in a plastic nano-to-micro sim adapter and put that in.. it snug in very tight and hurray, the sim got detected. Got the unlock code and its working now !!!!
With this experiment I think I also found out whats ur issue might be too. We often cut the sim using the sim-cutters which are often not perfectly sized but works with most phones. I suggest either try using my method if u can or get a retail micro-sim from a service provider and try that.. it should work.

Here is what all I have tried since start.
My battery Life was getting erratic - replaced the battery. (no sim error went away for a week).
Factory reset randomly helps (no sim error returns within 6-8 hours).
Clear cache, Dalvik, everythiong (no sim error returns within 1-2 days)
Un root and Completely went to Stock (no sim error returns within 1-2 days)
Tried a New Sim - No luck
Used Titanium backup to clean user cache etc etc
Tried paper trick begind sim to make sure sim in in proper contact.
Used ODIN to complete reflash to Stock GB and then update to JB via KIES ((no sim error returns within 1-2 days))
I am out of options now. I love this phone and hate to see what its doing now.
Please please somebody help...
Send it in for repair with Samsung.
It seems like it may be a problem with the SIM card part. You may want to try replacing it yourself, but no guarantees.

Took 3 weeks to come from China. It took me some time to replace it correctly and a precautionary step.
I am back on Jelly Bean (Stock and Unrooted)
Popped in SIM Card. and Memory card.
It really worked :0
BAD news :
Some how I think the new SIM Slot didnt like my memroy card..
and it fried it.
So I lost most of my pics from last 1 year
Was your memory card in the slot as you reassembled the back? It breaks every time. It happened to me twice.

Naah, the card and SIM were both out. There is no physical damage to Card
I think when I reconnected the SIM Slot on Main motherboard something fried the card.
never expected this to happen.
No sim card weird solution in my case
I had this problem for a week and got rid of this problem by un-installing the following
1. Facebook
2. Whats App Messenger
3. AVG antivirus
After un-installing each one of them, shutdown the phone, restart the phone after 30 Sec and check whether your NO SIM problem disappears. not install one more application and go on.
Ive had the same problem with my note i717 and have factory reset, tried a new sim card, and also swapped out the sim card reader with the one from my wifes i717 with no luck. Her phone still works fine (with my sim reader) and mine still has the same issue (with her sim reader installed). It started out only showing the error maybe once every few days then became much more frequent. Now it seems to happen only a few minutes after restarting. Does anyone think this is an issue with the mainboard?
Some people have reported luck with just replacing the SIM card and memory card reader. That didn't work for me.
I ended up buying a used motherboard on eBay for about $80 and replaced the entire thing myself. Thankfully the modular construction of the Note makes it really easy - did it in under 1/2 an hour. Problem solved.
The only thing I stupidly forgot to do is pull is backup the internal hard drive... so I ended up having to put the old board back in and pull everything off of it and then switch the new board back again. *sigh*
thanks!
My phone got wet so i dunked it in rice and it turned on the next day but got the no sim card problem. I followed Your advice and it worked! Thanks a lot!! Saved me from the extra stress and costs.

[Q] Samsung S3 mini cannot read simcard after suspected virus download

Hi guys
Hope someone can help! After ignoring advice from the Antivirus I picked up it appears a virus, my Samsung S3 mini does not read simcards anymore. The Antivirus told me my IMSI number has been changed, giving me the new and old ones. A motherboard replacement and a firmware upgrade did not solve the problem. I hope my phone is still fixable! Thanking you in advance for your help....
Certainly did not get a virus. Especially one that would persist across a motherboard swap. Which, I am a bit confused on... So you did a motherboard swap and have the same exact issue? That could only happen if they swapped the SIM card reader from the old board to the new and that is the faulty part. Other than that, check to see if your IMEI is correct or still there. If the EFS partition gets messed up, it can cause issues like this...but not across motherboard swaps either.
So either someone told you they swapped motherboards and lied to you, or they swapped a bad part over along with it.
thank you

Well check the IMEI from behind the battery and in the phone, see if they match. You didn't answer whether or not the IMEI was still there either. And if they actually did change the motherboard, that would be why you would have gotten the message the 2nd time around, if the app had saved your info from before and you restored it. Why are we trusting this anti-virus app anyway? They are known to point out stuff that isn't there or relevant. If they don't report anything, people think there's no reason to install them...
Also, did the repair shop charge you for the motherboard swap and gave you back the phone not working still with the same issue? Something just seems really off about this. I do repairs for a living and couldn't imagine that going down in that manner at my shop.

Hi Es0
I did not enquire too much at the repair shop, they just told me that a motherboard swop did not fix the fault and i accepted it at the time. The IMEI number matches except the slashes in the number at the back of the battery don't appear in the IMEI number displayed on the screen. The repairshop charged me not a cent and the phone came back same as i took it in...

Ah ok. They just swapped yours back in afterwards it would seems. But there's no way that the other motherboard would do the same thing unless it was broken in the same way and/or they were using the same SIM card reader, which of course, wouldn't make any sense and would defeat half the purpose of swapping it in the first place. I think you need a second opinion from another shop.
You've tested it with other cards as well?
Put your card in another phone to make sure that is still functioning properly?
When you look in the Settings / About Phone / Status - Does it show the phone # and ICCID #?
Do you get a 0 with a / through it at the top for the signal?

The card works fine in a Samsung Pocket at the moment. By # do you mean number ( sorry i am not up with the jargon...) ? Card in the Pocket now and by "my phone number" says "unknown". I don't see any reference to ICCID on either phone! And am not sure where to look for the 0 with a / through it !! Sorry if i am trying your patience here....

I mean your telephone number. If the card reader was not working at all, it would not be able to pick up your # off the card to display in the Settings / About Phone / Status part. But it is weird that the card in your other phone reads unknown. Have you tried another SIM in the phone in question? It could just be that the SIM card is being weird. I've seen them work on some phones and not others. The 0 with / would be in the Status Bar for the signal bars - next to the battery icon, etc.
Have you modded the phone at all?

Ok here goes....at first i tried different simcards with the same network operator with no success, this morning (South Africa time) I rethought your advice about trying other simcards, this time from other network operators....VOILA!! All it was is that the phone got locked to the other network again!! Probably by the Anti-virus app.... well i never!!!! So there you have it ...!!
If you can advise me about unlocking my Samsung S3 mini (on Cell C in South Africa) I would be very grateful!
Thank you again for your excellent advice...! Very much appreciated
Regards
Charles
Glad you're on the right track. As far as unlocking, you can try the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2082626
Seems like with most Samsung unlocks like these, it is very dependent on the build version of the software and the cellular company. If you are on 4.1.2, and it is not working, see if you can find a 4.1.1 modem and try again. That works in many of the phones I have unlocked with this kind of method. If that doesn't work, you're going to need an unlock code. If you aren't sure where to get that, check out my site and send me a message.

hmmmm I put the other network simcard in, made a test phone call... worked fine! so I thought its sorted now...now the fault is sort of on again. At ABOUT DEVICE and STATUS it shows the right network, but in the dropdown menu it says selected network unavailable.... can't make phonecalls but have access to internet via 3G...!! Can you still give me an opinion?
