Flashing gapps on stock android? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had access to a Nexus Q, during the time i was using it, i flashed gapps on the Q's stock rom. My question is if i flashed gapps on the LG L9 (LP769) would gapps install properly? Is there a possibility of bricking my device (which i wouldn't mind because i have a backup)? Although the Nexus Q's bootloader was unlocked, I'm sure that would't have changed the outcome. The only thing that's truly bothering me is since the Q is a Nexus, and since gapps seems to be heavily based of of vanilla android, wouldn't that mean flashing gapps on the L9 more prone to failing? I wouldn't mind being the first to try, but i would like your suggestions. My phone's bootloader is locked but the apps are deodexed.
My phone is dead and I'm not going to be home for about an hour and a half, if not i would try it.

I don't understand... lol the Nexus Q doesn't run android or have a GUI it's a plastic ball with a fancy light! Why would you want to install another devices gapps anyways when you can find most of them in the play store. Again what nexus q are you referencing, Google's absolute flop media device?

Yes, and it did have a gui once you installed a launcher, and it does run android. Second i tried it and it worked, just wanted to be safe. Third, gapps isn't meant for any specific device, gapps are supposed to be installed according to your android version. Yes, i was referencing "Google's absolute flop media device."

Installing recoveries and custom ROMs on rooted and unlocked Prime?

Received my Prime today and so far I love it. I couldn't help rooting it and unlocking it, so where do I go from now?
How do I go about installing say Clockworkmod, and do I need it to install custom ROMs? I've read about Androidroot's bootloader, but I don't wanna install it. Seems a bit too dangerous for me to even attempt, especially on a device that's only a few hours old (like 10h).
EDIT: Think I'll go with TeamEOS 3 Jellybean builds.
hi there,
for me the main reason to root and unlock my prime was to run linux on it, using it as allday work machine.
first step was to use a chroot environment under android, second was to try the port of lilstevie.
i think you only need the changed bootloader for that kind of things, otherwise only unlock the device using the
asus tool, and afterwards root it (installing the su apk) by any method around.
for custom roms, you don't have to use one, but they sometimes have cool additional features
hope that gives you a little expression.

Try androwook too mate.... not yet in jelly bean though but it's really worth a try...
Edit: and for your recovery i recommend TWRP..

Being too used with Jellybean on the GNex, I chose to install teameos Jellybean build and the 30th nightly is just like I want JB so I might not install other nightlies until there are some major changes.
Also, I have twrp.

[Q] Questions about the basic firmware apps...

Hey, I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 and so far I think it's the best!
I have been checking this site a lot to get an idea of what I'm actually buying and now I would like you pros to teach me a few things if you've got the time.
1) I got my device already rooted, though i know how to do it myself.
When I got it there was SuperSU and ClockworkMod Recovery installed on it.
I checked a bit on the internet and couldn't quite get what ClockworkMod is for... When is it mainly useful?
2) I keep reading about CyanogenMod being used in order to update my firmware... but I also read about it being used with ClockworkMod... probably for backup purposes? Care to explain what it is used for?
3) Which leads me to my final question. I search a lot on the internet and came across posts that say that Android 4.2.2 should be released on May/June... I also noticed a lot of websites saying there are already ways to get the update with apps like CyanogenMod.
So is it really safe to get it already? I know I should backup everything anyways just in case but will it be any different from when the official update comes out?
Thank you for your patience and sorry for being a noob

OK.
It's quite complicated, so bear with me.
Your device before rooted, consists of:
An Android OS (Your Main phone operating system)
A Recovery OS (Another operating system that is used to do things like factory reset your device if you cannot boot into Android)
Bootloader (This is the first thing that boots. It wil choose if you boot into android or recovery, depending on if you press any buttons at boot up)
So that is the BASIC OS layout.
When you root, often your stock recovery is replaced with a custom one. This is usually ClockworkMod recovery. There are other alternatives though. This recovery can be used to take backups of the phone and flash Custom Android ROMs and mods (Flashable zips). Sometimes, ClockworkMod recovery (CWM) has an app (CWM manager) to help you reboot into recovery. Although you can just hold volume up and home, then press power to turn on the device and boot into recovery.
CyanogenMod are one of the most famous develiopment teams of custom ROMs. There are 2 types of custom roms on the S3. Those that are directly built on Samsung Android ROMs (with touchwiz and all that jazz) and ones based directly on Google source code (Known as AOSP or Android Open Source Project).
There are a few famous AOSP develpment teams.
CyanogenMod (CM)
AOKP (Android Open Kang Project)
Paranoid Android (AOSPA)
These are much more like what you get on a Nexus device instead of the Samsung devices.
When rooting, or if you have a custom ROM, you need an app called SuperUser or SuperSU which manages applications root access. Any app that needs root access, requests it from SuperSU or SuperUser which prompts you if you want to allow it. See it as a gatekeeper, or a layer of security for your benefit.
Hope this helps.
Not complicated at all
Thank you for clearing that out.
So what about 4.2.2? I read that I can install a custom mod of it but that the official s3 i9300 update isn't out yet.
Does that mean it's risky or might have different features from the official update?
Thanks again for your time!

Samsung builds are up to 4.1.2 currently. There is an unoffical leak of 4.2.1
If you go to an AOSP build of 4.2.2, you will lose all the samsung features. We're unsure when the Sammy 4.2.2 will come.
Gotcha!
So I guess it's better to wait to the official update then take the risk...

You should be able to root assuming there isn't a new update out by then that blocks roots (it should be achievable afterwards eventually though). There are no custom recoveries nor any in sight currently so you would not be able to install CM. The Safestrap method that works on 4.2.2 also doesn't work with AOSP based roms (which CM is).

So would be able to achieve root, but would only be able to install custom roms based on TouchWiz?
Is the recovery issue due to the boot loader not being able to be unlocked? Just curious.
The newest firmware can't get a recovery at all, the couple versions before it can use the safestrap method to get touchwiz roms. Yes it's due to the bootloader.

Last question, and thanks for responding so readily.
I have had my wife on CM since Gingerbread, would the best CM option be (while not being an expensive dev phone) be a HTC One then?
(will try to find a CM specific forum next)

I believe the One does have s-off now, which is an htc thing for having an unlocked bootloader. I'm not sure though you'll have to check their forum.
As far as other flagships on Verizon, the Note 3 & Moto X can't get CM yet, but I think the LG G2 can. Not sure about the Droid series.

[Q] Newbie wanting to "root" / Mod.

Hey all! I am a newbie, but am technically inclined.
Both my bf and I have the HTC Rezound with the latest OEM firmware. We are sick of Sense, the battery life is horrible amongst other complaints.
We would like to move to an aftermarket firmware but I have noticed that most if not all of them have issues. The camera, the camcorder, the MMS, the WiFi...I don't want to drop my OEM firmware for something that doesn't fully work.
We also have the Nexus 7 (2012) Wifi tablets which we LOVE. It's pure KitKat 4.4! If only we could have stock Android on our phones.
Anyhow...I don't even know where to start with our phones and then of course, which software to install that is fully functional?
Thanks for the help ya'll!

I can recommend some ROMs that are both faster than stock and totally stable. So you want to unlock your bootloader and all?
Whatever it takes, I guess, to get a newer, faster and more battery conservative ROM . This Sense crap sucks!

Okay, first begin with unlocking the bootloader via HTC dev. Here's the website, you need to set up and use a legit email you can get into to. It will send you a unlock token once you get done with the steps. : http://http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
This will erase everything on the phone, but this will allow you to continue, you are on the newest radio's and updates correct?
I am on the latest update. Not sure about radios though. I assume they all come with the update from the carrier/OEM.
Why does unlocking the boot loader delete all on the phone?
Should I back up and remove my SD card before doing this?

Also you need adb and fastboot set up, heres a little tool I used for the windows partition of my mac: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
Then I never really had to use device drivers, so I'm somewhat unsure of that Search up HTC rezound drivers into google and see if you can find something I just use my mac because it doesn't need drivers and it's easy for stuff like that.... windows 7 is the way to go though, or is pretty much the only way to go....

ADB and Fastboot are used in pushing things to the device. Like after the bootloader is unlocked and you want to install a custom recovery, (custom recovery is where you erase and install ROM's. I am using Cyanogenmod 11. Actually I go between 4 different ROMs... Liquid smooth is a good ROM, I love Cyanogenmod 11. It's 4.4.2 its smooth, fast, camera works, I've heard video camera is a little wonky. I don't use the video camera. Everolv is a great ROM, snuzzo's plain andy I've heard is a great ROM. But I love Cyanogenmo, I love 4.4.2 but the choice of ROM's is up to the user. But I would suggest, everolv, Cyanogenmod, or Plain andy. Me I love my cyanogenmod. Very stable. Very smooth, Lots of options.
CM would be my choice! 4.4 huh? Why do all the builds seem to have troubles with the camera or video camera?
What else doesn't work on CM ?

VERY stable and it flies!
Yes CyanogenMod 11 is kitkat 4.4.2 well WiFi works, 4Glte works, when in 3G though the phone goes to roaming. :/ but WiFi tethering works. Confirmed camera works in that screenshot. Home screen is there, very smooth scrolling. But have you taken a go at unlocking yet?

So, there is problems with 3g too? Not sounding too promising at this point.

[Q] Best way to get updates and keep root (new to this phone)

So I've had the phone for less than a week. I've performed the ioroot procedure and installed twrp. Other than that, the phone is stock right now - 10B. I've performed a backup.
My phone is offering to install 11C. I'd like to update to that version, but at a glance it seems like there may be issues if I ever need to downgrade, or.. I may lose root.
So, for our specific phone, the VS985 model, what is the best way to upgrade to the latest stock ROM and keep root / the ability to downgrade?
Sorry for the noob question, but I'm new to the phone and am seeing some conflicting information, probably due to variances between different versions of the phone. I just want to do this right the first time and avoid having to ask more dumb questions
Look for the thread by bweN diorD in either General or Q&A that starts with [REF] and has img or images in the title.
Use the links in that thread to flash the 12b modem and system images, using autoprime's flash2Modem and flash2System zips (bweN links to that thread).
Your choice on whether you also want to flash the 12b boot image. I did flash the 11c boot, didn't bother with 12b.
After flashing the new images, anything you've tweaked in /system has to be re-nudged -- freezing verizon bloat, freezing "System updates..." (or renaming the /system/app LGDMSClient files), reinstalling the hotspot mod (if you need it). It's a pretty painless evolution.
(Definitely freeze System updates.... Once you've got twrp, if you try to install an OTA directly you'll get stuck in a boot-to-recovery problem. Autoprime has a flashable zip that wipes out the files causing the boot-to-recovery, I keep a copy of that zip loaded on my phone's user volume, but it's simpler to just not try to install an OTA.)
Wow. Okay. Thanks a lot. This is super helpful. I'm downloading as we speak. I hope you don't mind a followup question...
My understanding is that it is safer to avoid flashing the boot image because changes to the bootloader could affect root or the ability to roll back. Is there a reason you bothered flashing 11C?
For anyone else, the thread mentioned is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/reference-stock-img-files-t2966958

There is no downside to flashing it at this point, but I haven't seen proof there is any benefit either. I'm still on 10b running L ROMs no problem, so I don't see any point in updating anything but the modem.

You can root 10B and tell supersu to maintain root and take all the OTAs and still keep root. I did that so that I'd have VoLTE and I could take an OTA in the future without issue if it was shown root would survive. Your choice I guess, but we know root survives all the way to 12B so why not go the stock route to ensure you are fully updated? Just my thoughts anyway.

Yeah we all could be as well. The issue is your camera is jacked and you lose things like multi window, ir remote, and quick memo writing.
I tried 5.0.x for a few days but the negatives weren't worth it to me. I am fully updated at 12B as I can still use the G3 with the stock goodies that were added by LG and not cripple the device by putting AOSP on it. Don't get me wrong, I prefer the look of AOSP, but one of the major reasons I got this phone was for the camera and without the 5.0.x roms including LG camera app with them, it's a no go for me. Google camera app just doesn't do it and laser focus is gone so pics are crap in my opinion.
Instead I use g3 tweaks and Nova to make my phone look more like AOSP. I'll wait for the devs to get ahold of 5.0.x for the g3 so we can still keep the g3 goodies before I update any further.
So, I'd say 12B is as fully updated as there is at this point. Just my opinion though.

Just my opinion though.

the camera doesnt stand up to stock, no doubt, but thats the only thing i wish could be better. the rest of that stuff i dont use.
it all depends on what you want/use/need.
i prefer custom roms the majority of the time.

You're right for sure. It's all personal preference. I figure if the only thing that looks different from stock is the settings menu and not having the quick settings tiles, I'm close enough that I'm not bothered by all the LG colors and added stuff.
I'm waiting for the camera app to get ported then I'm all in on a custom 5.0.x rom. That may be a while, but I can wait.

Yeah we all could be as well. The issue is your camera is jacked and you lose things like multi window, ir remote, and quick memo writing.

For anyone reading this, I just wanted to let them know that there is a ported version of Quick Remote that works under AOSP / CM including Lollipop. I think it's in the non-variant G3 sections.

Thank you for this thread. Honestly this should be Pinned, I am an extremely saavy/experienced Android user and XDA forum member, and I could not believe how long it took me to find this sort of info for such a popular phone.
This is my first LG phone, and I'm having to learn all the LG and Gseries specific "stuff". The info above was invaluable. :good:
