[Q] New GS4 - ? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I know I probably haven't searched hard enough, but if I were to buy my wife a new GS4 for the holidays. Would it be rootable and would I be able to install CM on it.
I know with each update verizon puts out there are new obstacles to over come, just haven't been paying attention recently.
Thanks in advance, and sorry if the post is repetitive

You should be able to root assuming there isn't a new update out by then that blocks roots (it should be achievable afterwards eventually though). There are no custom recoveries nor any in sight currently so you would not be able to install CM. The Safestrap method that works on 4.2.2 also doesn't work with AOSP based roms (which CM is).

So would be able to achieve root, but would only be able to install custom roms based on TouchWiz?
Is the recovery issue due to the boot loader not being able to be unlocked? Just curious.

The newest firmware can't get a recovery at all, the couple versions before it can use the safestrap method to get touchwiz roms. Yes it's due to the bootloader.

Last question, and thanks for responding so readily.
I have had my wife on CM since Gingerbread, would the best CM option be (while not being an expensive dev phone) be a HTC One then?
(will try to find a CM specific forum next)

I believe the One does have s-off now, which is an htc thing for having an unlocked bootloader. I'm not sure though you'll have to check their forum.
As far as other flagships on Verizon, the Note 3 & Moto X can't get CM yet, but I think the LG G2 can. Not sure about the Droid series.

Q: Do I goto 4.3 ?

All:
I have my note II rooted, and its running 4.1.2
I received the OTA today, and I chose not to download it. Just curious on what folks are doing ?
I dont run any custom rom on my Note II, I just use it for rooting purposes....
if I do want to upgrade to 4.3 what is the suggested path of action ?
I thought I could use wugfresh I guess not though ?
Thanks

Once you upgrade to 4.3 OTA, your bootloader is locked and root is gone, along with the generally unwelcome addition of Samsung's KNOX technology. No bootloader exploit currently exists. If you upgrade by flashing one of the ROM's here on XDA or the non-OTA update to 4.3 (check the Android Development forum), you get the latest software and keep an unlocked bootloader & root.

Wife gave me my Christmas present yesterday...(a Note 2 she bought used...lovely phone). It started an update when I fired it up, (has been so long since I rooted my Bionic, I completely forgot about OTA's) It now has 4.3, and the only sort of tethering I can mange with it is usb pdanet, which merely qualifies as 'better than nothing', as it often drops out. Might have to put the damn thing in a drawer and fire up the Bionic until the tech gods here work it out. Am downloading a zip from another thread mentioned by Tfly12 that purports to get around the entitlement check...will see

Can't flash that zip though can ya? Trust me. Loosing tethering is the biggest thing that ticks me off about 4.3.
Hate having to have an nonroot phone for work.

not sure yet, my last experience with this was the Bionic....and after I got it doing what I wanted it to do.....never bothered with it again. Now I'm trying to learn everything Samsung, (precious little of Motorola knowledge seems to apply here....I always thought Odin was a Viking god...) so I don't end up in one of those frantic "HELPME! Seems like I should wait then... It tried to download and install last night but it failed, so it just rebooted and i am good... probably because i have recovery on... not sure....
I prefer to honestly just go back to stock, and then maybe goto 4.3 once there is a good root out there....

I made the same move after my speaker started going on my BIONIC, fortunately for me I made the move to the N2 a few months ago. If you are lucky and someone is able to get the bootloader unlocked on 4.3, you should find this device much easier to work with then using Safestrap and all that other jazz. Odin is sort of like using HOB except I have only had to use it twice and not constantly. Once to unlock the bootloader initially and just recently to update the modem and wifi parameters when I made the move to 4.3
Hopefully someone can help you get set up to use the N2 the way you need it.

Please help a newbie

Ok, a little info on me. I have had an iPhone since 2007. I decided to buy a used G S4 to see if I would like it. So far I like it a lot but need help getting it just right.
I am trying to install custom roms on my device. I want to try CM.10 first. So far I have achieved root aaccess, and installed gooManager.
The problem is that when I install a custom recovery script so I can have a custom recovery the phone locks up. What could I be doing wrong? I am sure this has been covered a hundred times but there is so much info on here its overwhelming to someone new to android. Thanks to everyone for the great work and contributions s already made.
Try odin to flash!

I watched all of the videos. Do I have a locked boot loader? Does that keep me from installing open recovery script? If so do I need a device with an older baseband in order to root, install custom recovery, and run custom roms?
I have a SCH-I545 running 4.3 with an mk2 baseband.
Yes, your bootloader is locked and currently there is no way to unlock it. Safestrap is your only option for ROMs now. Start with reading the OP.

Check out www.swappa.com
People have em up for sale, just look for the last three letters of the build (or baseband I suppose) to be MDK. Anything newer than that is locked down.

Information is easily available in these forums concerning bootloaders and rooting and recoveries....with you phone your only option is safestrap and just one or 2 roms are available..
look before you jump
Nobody posts the build number in their adds on ebay or that swappers site. I'm messaging them all individually haha. Lmfao why didn't I read about this more before buying this boot locked pos lol.

I will be honest this is the first phone that i have ever been satisfied with rooted debloated stock but I am very greatful my flashing itch is able to be somewhat scratched with safestrap. The above builds aren't worthless but I guess that all depends on your point of view and what your wanting to do with your device.

[Q] Installing CyanogenMod on VRUFNK1

I'm helping my friend install CyanogenMod 12 on his S4 (jfltevzw). We've rooted it and we're currently doing a full backup through Safestrap in case anything happens. Once that's finished, I'm unsure as to what we should do. CyanogenMod's wiki has installation instructions for the Verizon S4, but it says in big bold letters to not attempt this if on a ROM newer than I545VRUAMDK. He's on the latest version that Samsung/Verizon have pushed out, which is I545VRUFNK1. Is there an alternate way to install CyanogenMod on top of the newer stock ROM, or is it not possible?

Dang, so there's absolutely nothing whatsoever that can be done? The page says you can't downgrade, but is anything at all possible now that he's beyond the MDK build? He really wants to make the switch and is fine with doing a complete wipe or whatever is necessary.
EDIT: I've been trying to read up on the VZW S4 and why this isn't possible, but I don't quite get it. Reading other threads it seems like the reason is because the bootloader is locked, but that can't be the case if he was able to install Safestrap. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 where everything is incredibly simple, so I apologize for my ignorance. (I don't mean to say you're wrong or anything as I have no idea myself, I just don't understand why it doesn't work on newer ROMs.)

you can install hyperdrive rom
its not lolipop but its worlds better then stock ...
also there is a chance of getting the 5.01 GPE edition rom running when Samsung releases the lolipop update for the vz s4
that would at least give us a working lolipop kernel to use with the gpe rombase
and hey you never know there could be a exploite in the lolipop rom/kernel that lets us get kexec working
Basically safestrap loads after the kernel but early enough to replace point to a different root for the system. So we can load what ever system we want... But are stuck with the kernel the phone booted. If the system is based on the stock kernel this is fine... But when it starts making calls to custom kernel stuff you will have trouble.
So Cyanogenmod only provides the GUI? I've installed CM on two B&N tablets and I've been asked to root a new Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4. I've assumed that, because it's new, it will have I545VRUFNK1 4.4.2. I rooted my VSG s3 years ago to 4.3 and there was no going back on that one. It looks like it's the same with VSG s4. So, if CM provides only the GUI, then a rooted VSG s4 can still access Google Apps? What is the concern with with TW based ROMs? Is it the recovery/backup feature or only being stuck with the VSG s4 GUI?

Nope, in order to get CM, you'll need to be on MDK. Samsung prevents downgrading.
btw. the baseband version doesn't matter much. Its the bootloader version that is the toughie.
Boo! I just picked up my S4 yesterday after a 5 month run of using Windows Phone so I'm trying to figure this phone out. I'm on NK1 and trying to figure out how to root now.
vaindil where did you find a VRUFNK1 compatible version of Safestrip?

Which Rom's can be flashed with safestrap?

Hello, not new to rooting and such but I'm a little confused. Just got this Note 2 after breaking my G2. I'm on ND7, managed to root and install safestrap. I've made a stock back up and flashed over my stock as there is no rom slot support yet. I've flashed Alliance 30 and it worked well. My question is, can I flash other Rom's like Wilson's CM12? My bootloader is still locked. Is there a safe way to unlock it? I've searched and found that if you have a locked bootloader you can't flash kernels. I think? Not trying to be annoying. Just confused. I haven't used safestrap since my old Razr days, lol. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance. ..

I think you can flash any rom using safestrap. The only ones I tried so far are DN3 and Alliancerom. They flashed with no problems. I would like to add on to this question though, Can I flash any mods using safestrap?
Right. Or kernels for that matter? It's strange because there's some people with unlocked bootloader's, some with safe strap, and some just plain old stock rooted (which was a pain in it's self).
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Free mobile app
Did a little more digging into the thread, basically if your bootloader is locked, the only Rom's that you can flash are those with the same build and kernel that you are currently on. So you were right. As far as flashing mods with safestrap, still unsure. ???

I'd be on the "Send it Off" wagon.
I've seen destructions for using ODIN to flash a KIES image in, and then go about fixing it that way but many many more posts saying this is impossible.
What I'd like to know, if I have to go with the same darn kernel etc, is how the everloving **** to get rid of ALL and I mean *ALL* of the crapware/verizonware/amazonware/etc and completely strip the touchwhiz down to just what I need....

Anyone know if there is a list? I was just given this phone. I rooted it, but also stuck with the locked boot loader. I did install Safestrap and did a back up, and was able to create a ROM slot, but that is all I've done so far.
Since I'm "developmentally chsllenged" (I can follow instructions, but I can't do any development work or anything) I try to just go with trusted info, which has worked so far. I just came from a RAZR Maxx HD with CM12 and am not happy with the way this phone runs.
I'm in the same boat as you guys, and I believe you can only flash 4.4.2 ROMs. That's what I gathered from the Safestrap thread. However, you can (and should) backup your stock ROM in Safestrap and flash other ROMs over that.
I'm currently using Alliance, and it's decent. Nowhere near the amount of modifications as CyanideL, which is really what I want, but can't install because it's currently on Android 5.x.
Ridiculous what Samsung has done to this phone. Glad it was relatively cheap though, good lesson to avoid any manufacturer who locks the bootloader in the future.
Does anyone know if we can just flash an older version of the stock ROM? Couldn't we odin, or something, down to 4.1.x and go from there?

I have SS and did a back up, but I thought I read about people running into problems and then bricking? I think they got them back after doing some stuff but since I am no where as talented with this stuff I try to be cautious. I've rooted and SS' ed a Bionic and ran several ROM's on that one until replacing it with a RAZR Maxx HD that I rooted (and was able to take advantage of the exploit before they pushed a patch and unlocked the bootloader).
If I can just flash over the stock ROM safely, then I'll get flashing right away
I read the issues with bricking as well, but I think those people were trying to flash 5.x ROMs. I agree about wanting to avoid it though. I have a HTC One S that I saved from being bricked a few times, but I don't even wanna have to go through the process of that for the Note 2. Here's the Safestrap thread, if you're a little wary and would like to read more about it.
As far as I can tell, you should be good with flashing 4.4.2 ROMs, since that's what I did and we seem to have the same config (4.4.2 Note 2, Safestrap 3.72). The only thing I wonder is what TWRP you have. I have the latest 2.7.0.x. If that's what you have, you should be just fine with flashing a 4.4.2 ROM over the stock ROM.

Thinking of buying a G3. A few questions about the bootlocker/roms/rooting

I have a verizon note 2 on straight talk. its 4.4.2 rooted but with an unlockable bootloader. I cant install any roms dont use the stock touchwiz kernel.
Ive been looking and i think a verizon G3 is what i need. i use straight talk and where i live only gets verizon service.
it looks like this phone is downgradable but i dont know much about it and the threads are not very recent.
Is there anything i need to know when buying a G3? For instance, my note 2, if i had just bought one with 4.3 android and not 4.4.2 i wouldnt be having this problem. are there any similar issues with this phone?
i would be rooting it and installing cm12.
thanks guys any advice is appreciated.
Also if theres another phone that might be better for me im also interested. i liked the g3 because it has a 5.5" screen like my note 2. Anything below 5.5" would be too small. Micro sd card slot is a must. Removable and upgradable battery also.

so what is the latest android version i can get on this phone without having a locked bootloader and stuck on stock rom with no root?actually the bootloader cant be unlocked at all, the g3 has a "bypass" called "bump" which gives you the same benefit as unlocked, but really is not.
the last directly bumpable version is 12b, however bump can be used on every version through various methods, including the current 35b or 5.1.

They can all be downgraded, even 5.1.1. However, i bought one with 5.0.1. It is easier to root and ROM from a 5.0.1 and 4.4.2.

The G3 can be downgraded from any current firmware and then twrp can be installed via bump. i have had my G3 for about a year now, and have been running CM on it since CM 11 was officially released and am currently running cm12.1 i plan to keep my G3 until it dies or i break it or until another Verizon phone is released where developers find out how to bypass/unlock the bootloader, sadly the G4 hasn't been unlocked if it was i would upgrade ASAP

thanks i just got the g3 and have it rooted. its the vs985 on 24b. im worried about losing the efs data while downgrading. i dont want to downgrade first and then back it up with twrp.
did you back up your efs before downgrading?
My G3, which I recently got, was a 23C model. I just followed the n00b unlocker threads here, and did it with a combination of ADB and the LG FLash Tool.
I'm now running current TWRP and XDABBEB's bootstack and VS985 ROM (5.1.1). Bear in mind that the camera will not work as well under CM/AOSP ROMs. I returned to a stock variant because I didn't like the camera performance, both speed and acuity. For me, tetherability, display, relative compactness, replaceable battery and mSD card, all relative to price, were my value points. The G3 has been a great phone on all of those counts.
