hi guys just got myself a xperia mini today, have root access, and iv installed cwm and i was going to install a custom rom, then noticed most said i need an unlocked bootloader to do this, so checked this with the service number on the phone and it says my bootloader can be unlocked, just realy need abit of guidance of the easiest way to do this. i googled for it and noticed you can do it directly from SE themselves but this voids warranty, is this the best and safest way to do this or is there an alternative.
all help or guidance much appreciated!
there is an alternative. check development section. but official way is much safer.

thanks mate, im currently still on stock rom 2.3.3, iv unlocked bootloader and installed cwm, but im abit stuck on how to flash the kernal that comes with cyanogen rom, or any kernel for that matter, as i cant seem to find any clear cut guides, do i just apply the update from within cwm and jobs a good un, and also whats the best way to flash the boot.img, is fastboot the only way as im struggling understanding the commands at this point as iv never used it before.. wanna get a custom rom on this so bad but im affraid my lack of knowedge on the subject is holding me back at the moment, so i really appreciate any help or guidance on these matters!
right guys im trying to flash rage kernal via fastboot, as you can see from the pics iv supplied i have put the rage boot.img in the android sdk folder, opened cmd and entered this line to start the process.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
as you can see if pic 2 im getting error "cannot load" boot.img
so where have i went wrong here, im totally baffled by this now its got my head done in but i wont give up until i break it or get a nice custom rom on here, lol.

If you dont mind to unlock your bootloader, then that will be your first step.
Then, flash custom kernel.
After that, if you want to use hybrom, you will need .62 first afaik.
Just make sure you do it all with caution or else, what is messed will be "upgraded" to become a disaster for your device.

Op said want to install hybrom later. If he/she just flash the stock, he/she just will soft brick the device again and again and again. The other newcomers might follow it also and the numbers of people who soft bricked their device will just keep incresing as of now. They NEED to know they MUST unlock their bootloader and install custom kernel that have cwm in order to flash custom ROM.
Just my 2 cents..

I just want to enlighten the op since the op already flash hybrom v11, flashing custom kernel and do wipe all in cwm already bring the device again. Hybrom just doesnt compatible with stock kernel. But, if you guys lead him to the long way, once the op flash hybrom v11 again from stock ROM/kernel, then it will be bricked again and the circle wont stop and he/she might think that was hybrom faults but the fact is, unlock your bootloader to flash custom kernel before you can use custom ROM, it is just that simple.
If op doesnt have any plan to use custom ROM,reluctant to unlock bootloader, flash back stock by any methods prefered as stated you and metalrawk should be enough. Correct me if im wrong, it is not that hard. If dont like my post, you are welcome to put me in your "ignore list".. It is free to do so..
Edit: and i dont even quote any posts by you or other posters, it is not an argument, just an explanation.

And my post just not targetting the op alone. There are more and more people that are new to flashing now posting at hybrom thread and in this section as well complaining they are stuck at s.e logo, i believe you can see that trend, ive explained it as well in my post above. no hard feeling taken at my side.
I seldom go to any "general" section but that trend of posting in other section quite annoying to be honest.. The op might know (we all can see from his/her post) but the other newcomers might read it and impatiently assume the whole story incorrectly, thats my concerns.
If my post is wrong, then its my bad and apologies from me. Other than that, i believe we agree the story ends here.

Bootloop in St15i
I upadated my Sony Xperia Mini St15i to ICS 4.0.4 with Sony PC companion (Frimware: 4.1.B.0.587). Till then everything was fine.
Then I rooted my phone by following this
Main > Sony Xperia™ support forum > Android development > Discussions
{Guide} How To Root Xperia™ Smartphone Running ICS ( Ice Cream Sandwich) or GB ( Gingerbread )
Still everything was fine.
I installed Titanium Backup and removed few bloatwares, following this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773024
Installed Xparts from google play for CWM recovery then took backup.
Suddenly after 2 days my phone went in loop mode. Now I'm not able to solve this issue.
Use of flashtool to flash stockrom
A full wipe data/cache/dalvik..
Also tried format system/data/cache, then flashing rom (CM 9.1.0; CM 9.0.0; CM 7.2.0), no use.

Hi!
This summer I'm getting my first Android phone (Xperia S), and I have some questions about rooting. I would post this in the Development section, but I don't have 10 posts.
Since I'm a power user, I want to root my phone, but since I never had a smart phone, I'm not that familiar with the rooting process. I know what bootloader and rooting itself is, but when I'm reading the guides, I'm not completely familiar with all the terms and whatnot.
I only want to root my phone, without using any special roms or anything. Should I keep my bootloader locked or should I unlock it? Does this affect the updates in any way? If I unlock the bootloader, will I still be able to update the phone or will I need to relock it?
Will I need to reroot the phone after each firmware update?
If you have any additional hints or information, I would be glad to read it.
Regards,
Klemen
The main benefit of rooting your phone is you can install any software you want, some apps need root permission, you can also customize UI, tweak performance, making a better battery life, etc.
on this device, you can relock it. If you doubt about your warranty, you can use the rooting with locked bootloader method. but you still need to relock if you want to claim your warranty in some cases. I hope you will not.
my advice is just use to your phone first, you enjoy with keyboard, texting, surfing on google play, bla bla bla. You will find the answer why you want to root or not.
I already know that I want to root my phone, the main reason is to get rid of the ads.
I'm just not sure, which is the preferred method of rooting it. I'm curious what's going to happen to future updates if I root the phone (some say, that every firmware unroots the phone).

I've numbered your questions in the quote, and made them bold for easier explanation.
1. Considering your last post (you want mostly to remove ads), I would recommend keeping it locked. For rooting it and installing CWM Recovery (I can try to explain what this is, if you don't know), you can follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742992
2. As said by XGAdev, you must relock your bootloader if you need to send it to warranty or update using either SUS or PC Companion. But you always can use Flashtool for updating. Just download the original firware you want, put it on the right folder and flash it.
3. Well, the answer is on the second one.
Right now, you just want to remove ads. In no time you will be heavily modding it, theming, etc. This also happened to me
If you need anything else, just say it. Press the thanks button if I was helpful enough, and if you want to press it. If not, just say it
My opinion:
Keep the BL locked, so you don't loose the DRM Keys, and follow the Root with BL Locked Guide to obtain Root Acess...
Unless you really want to have a tweaked kernel you wont need to Unlock the BL

Any ROM can be used in Locked BL (rooted)?

If you take the official OTA you will definitely get a locked bootloader, and lose root. Root may be possible down the road but there are no guarantees. If you want to ensure root and an unlocked bootloader you need to follow the directions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578458
Is there going to be a zip I can flash in twrp to up date with out having to be on a rom just on the 4.3.1 I don't have access to a computer and never used odin some help would be nice this my first Samsung all I my other phones were moto and we're different doing the updates

My question is I think I want to jump to 4.3, but I'm not sure how. I am stock rooted with locked bootloader. I'm still on 4.1.1 with VRALJB. I was always satisfied with the stock rom so never saw the point in unlocking the bootloader. What is the easiest way for me to update since I'm really not interested in root access anymore?
My question is why would you want to go the VZW 4.3 OTA? As previously mentioned, you'll lose root access, end up with a locked bootloader, and likely get a bunch of bloatware. There's plenty of 4.3 custom ROMs out there that will do much more for your device.
I dont want that. I'm new to the note 2. I've been on moto phones with locked bootloaders. So I've not had to worry bout locking down my bootloader until now. Ive rooted my note 2 and installed roms on it. Im just trying to find a update that I can use with out installing a rom in order to get to 4.3 1.
I've never used odin and don't have access to a computer right now. In starting to think that i can't get to 4.3.1 with out a computer. Was just hoping I could use twrp to flash a mod version of the update to get there

So far I have not seen any reference to a recovery flashable firmware file...odin only. That said, with a computer, odin is really easy to use so when you get to a PC you can do it in about 3 minutes.
So can I just do the mod update and not have to install the rom or it a package deal ? Just asking cuz with the razor all I had to do was the update .

Hi xda,
I was thinking of picking up a SOL24 for use as a wi-fi tablet, as a friend can get it affordably for me from Japan. I plan to do the following sequentially:
1) Root device
2) Backup TA partition
3) Use Titanium Backup to extract Sony apps (Album, Walkman etc)
3) Unlock bootloader
4) Flash system and bootloader partitions from port of 4.4.4 GPE (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2800414)
5) Flash "adv-stock-v4.img" to boot partition for custom recovery
6) Re-root device.
7) Restore TA partition.
8) Restore Sony apps.
I am not flashing the user partition to retain the 32gb storage.
Will I be able to get a GPE-coverted wi-fi tablet that is updateable via dirty flashing in this manner, or will I possibly brick it?
Also, does a custom rom mean that the phone will become unlocked? (not that this is vital; where I live in Singapore we don't have any CDMA networks and hence that's why i'm planning on using it as a wi-fi tablet)
Will the Sony apps be usable on GPE?
I submit to the collective wisdom of the Z Ultra jedis at xda. Thanks in advance!
I don't know of anyone that has done this
points 4. I dont think that zip has a boot.img, either use the one at bottom of that post or doonkernel
5. I dont know if a kernel that old will boot 4.4.4
6 why?
7 you wont be able to boot a custom boot image after doing this
8 you will need root to do this, and some of them wont work on the GPe ROM
Other thoughts
I don't know how compatible the kernels will be
Make sure to make a nandroid before flashing /system and /boot - you will need to hotboot a boot.img with fastboot or flashtool
Have a FTF on hand if it goes really bad

Are you using the SOL24 as well?
if the sol24's are simlocked can they be BL unlocked?

To summarize, the main issues with SOL24 are:
1) No cost-effective SIM unlock option
2) Other ROMs can be flashed (htcsoku's ROM, among others), but not GPE (or not easily, rather) ... this is potentially a deal-breaker for me, might not be for others.
Hence, if I do get a SOL24, it will probably be as a wifi-tablet running the Sony stock ROM ...

The problem is I have no idea what they can and can't be made to do as they are a Japan only model so no dev work on here and I think this is only the second or third thread on them on XDA

Well, if I do pick one up I will let you know. You can vicariously do dev work on it through me.
If you just want to use sol24 as a wifi tab you can just flash the GPE ver. .It's not so difficult and I flashed twice.
HTCsoku and another custom rom rewrited the band,if you flash it you cant use CDMA network, its not a problem in Singapore.
But GSM/WCDMA/FDDLTE network is OK,so (may be ) you can use sol24 as a phone by flashing a custom rom but it's not GPE.

I'm a new sol24 user, maybe I should start a new thread?? (I've posted before when I used Motorola Cliq to get cyanogenmod 7 but those posts aren't in my profile now.) ebay sent me a Kitkat4.4.2 when it was supposed to be Jellybean, after first sending me a Z Ultra C6802, so I'm trying to find downgrading or upgrading options, Lollipop is real nice but I like the older builds, to deal with apps-to-sd issues, it topped out on market installs around 4gig. After rooting with towelroot, and using SD Fix. It still won't apps2sd but can use 64gb sd. I read about the 32gig memory loss issues in some of the threads from flashing.
Bootloader and network are still locked. I wish to stay with stock or sony release for the bravia engine and other probable support. Supposedly it has IR Blaster? Called Felicia and NFC seems to work, but it didn't with the first Lollipop C6802 that ebay first mistakenly sent me. I doubt any tweeking of the TV would get it working here in the states even with a SDR antenna. So Sony has said something about supporting Xperia bootloader unlocking and recovery? Hopefully for the sol24 variant. But mainly I'm just trying to fix apps2sd - does 4.4.4 fare any better in this regard? I'm looking into Xposed to try to fix this too - but don't want to bootloop or brick.
