[OFFICIAL] AWS thread - where, how fast - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I just did a few speed tests and took the best one I got. I was using LTE with full bars and I just upgraded to 4.3. Here are my results. Looks like AWS is enabled in the San Francisco Bay Area. I want to see if we can create a map of where AWS is currently working.

Adding screen cap of even faster speeds on LTE!

FYI if you enable hidden dialer codes (there is a thread on it here) then type *#0011# in the dialer you can see what band you're on, the signal strength, and the bandwidth (which governs max speeds).
Its really the only definitive way to be able to tell you're using AWS.
Edit: when you get there, band 13 is 700mhz LTE and band 4 is AWS LTE.
To find the max speed multiply 7.5 times the DL bandwidth which for 700mhz LTE is 10Mhz so 700Mhz LTE has a maximum possible speed of 75mbps down.
AWS bandwidth varies by location. Some have 20mhz, some have 15mhz and less lucky folks have 5 or 10.
Example *#0011# Engineering screen

To avoid dozens of new threads popping up I have made this the official thread to discuss this subject.

I posted shots of 40's and 50's on the MI1 modem. You are not on aws with those numbers.

Looks like no LTE rollout in San Antonio yet. Same as always.

You could be if the AWS band in his area only has 5 or 10mhz of bandwidth. Not every area has 20x20mhz of contiguous AWS spectrum available.

I'm still on band 13 but am now getting 30mbps. Used to get a max of 20 so maybe this also improves signal on band 13 also. I'm on mdk with hyperdrive 10 flashed on twrp.

I was on MDK, took the latest radio. Still noticed I was on 700Mhz Band 13 via *#0011#
I then did the other, *#2263#, and hit option 4 for LTE band preference and forced it to Band 4. It connected but was really weak and dropped out. Guess I'm on the fringe of it here in the office. Will have to test more later.

*#2263# is the correct band selector menu. Not sure why it wouldn't work. Can you get to the full menu at *#197328640# ? It sounds like you may not have fully enabled the hidden Samsung service menu. Could try *#22745927

Second number enables the service menu in some cases according to the other how to thread.

I am running Eclipse 2.0 MDK TW build but since the dialer is aosp it is not working for me. I know the hiden menu is activated because this is the only number that worked from the thread.
4) Try it out! Go to the phone dialer and enter *#06# (show MEID) as a test.
That works but none of the other numbers. I also read you need to be on a stock rom.

Well since I can't root...

Speed tests at or above 80mbps are also a give away but that only works for 15mhz and 20mhz bandwidth AWS areas (which most are I think)

I'm in San Jose, Ca and no difference in speeds.

AT&T JB on T-Mobile network

Strating a new topic to figure out which radio works better on T-Mobile for AT&T JB update.
Before JB update, like several other people on this forum, I have been using i717 on T-Mobile network . 4G has been working fine with GT-N7005-IMM76D-DXLJ2 Rom and UVLG3modemfori717_gt-n7005amss radio.
1. UVLG3 modem with GT7005 amss gives no signal.
2. UVLG3 modem with JB amss gives no signal.
3. Stock radio and amss in JB update only connects to Edge. (unless you are in area where T-Mobile has 3g on 1900?)
4. Blaze ICS modem connects to 4g but signal bars are not shown in status bar.
For the best modem so far, check the below post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41052527
If anybody else tried any other combinations, please post your experience in this thread.
Thanks.
same here plus i try it with Telus modems too not signal (signal comes and gone)
I made my own combo for WIND in Canada (confirmed to work on T-Mobile with much higher speeds). It's really slow (about 1 Mbps down and 50 kbps up) but at least it works (good voice/signal strength and somewhat usable data)
It's the SGH-T989D (Telus Galaxy S II X) latest modem (TLMC4) and AMSS from the old Blaze modem posted around this forum. Just flash it with CWM.
http://speedy.sh/uyHBp/SGH-T989D-TLMC4-amss-from-blaze.zip
Steps:
1. Flash in CWM
2. On reboot, do a network scan
3. Open dialer, dial *#2263# and select WCDMA Prefs -> WCDMA 1700
4. Do network scan again, WIND (or whatever your AWS provider is) should appear. Select it and it should register.
5. You can multi task back to the service mode and go back and select "[1] Automatic" to use all bands again.
No responsibility if it bricks your phone, it works on my SGH-i717R without issues
OT: I also tried SGH-T989D_TLMC4_radio.zip and it works on Bell/Telus/Rogers without any mods. However, trying any T989 combos never really worked (some did, but data kept dropping).

This is an important thread for this forum. I'm in the same situation, utilizing the AT&T rom on an AT&T device, and trying to use it on T-Mobile.
My experience has been strange. I am using the stock firmware radio with the AT&T JB update, and I seem to connect to 4G randomly on T-Mobile, switching between UMTS:3 and HSPAP15. I am usually on Edge more often than "4G". I don't have LTE in my area, and "3G" on 1900 doesn't work on my Wife's Iphone.
I tried the UVLG3 Modem for i717, and got no signal at all.
I haven't tried the Blaze modem. What I want to know, is what is the experience with Blaze when you look at system status? UMTS:3? HSPAP?
I am on stock modem in JB rom right now, shows UMTS3 in status.
Nothing strange about that, it is in UMTS when data is idle, anything else is when data is active.
You only get 3G on T-Mobile if its a "re-farmed" 1900 MHz region, where they moved 3G from AWS to 1900 MHz. If you go outside your zone you will only have 2G.

What is HSPAP:15 considered? HSPA 15Mbps? Is that at 1700MHz or 1900Mhz?

You would have to go to field test mode to find out, Android does not have such details. Dial *#0011# and find at the very top "RRC: .. BandX," where X is a number. Is it 4 (AWS) or 2 (1900Mhz)?
There may be an item (radio dependant) called DC_HSPA to indicate whether its dual cell HSPA(+). Post a screenshot and I can check it for you.

Hmm, can you try this. I've tested it a bit on WIND and data/voice works...the data is slighly more stable/faster (still around 1.5 Mbps/50 Kbps for me)
http://speedy.sh/uyHBp/SGH-T989D-TLMC4-amss-from-blaze.zip
IT works for me on WIND, so it should work on T-Mobile. Same steps as in my previous post above to get it to see AWS carriers. If your T-Mobile service is 1900 MHz, it may just work without any of those steps.
Btw, for some reason it only sees WIND (the modem is non WIND specific) and no other AWS carriers (i.e Mobilicity) when set to WCDMA 1700. No idea why.

Tried it, signal strength went from 2 bars with stock modem to 4 bars, status shows UMTS3 when idle and switches to HSPAP:15 briefly.
Speed test
outside the house 7000kbps/1000kbps
Inside the house 1650kbps/66kbps
*#0011# shows rrc band 4, previously it was band 2.
*#2263# doesn't shows any item with * infront, previously automatic had * infront of it.
Tried setting wcdma to 1700 and saw the same performance, rrc band4 and switching between umts3 and hspap:15.
Havn't tested call quality but this has been the best modem so far.
Thanks for sharing.

Cannot make make/receive calls on LTE

First time posting on here so please don't tear me a new ass if I'm doing something wrong lol.
I just got a Galaxy Note I (SGH-I717) on AT&T.
Initially I was having problems with reception and 4G and not getting LTE at all. I finally got LTE working my setting up the PTA APN and by dialing *#2263# and selecting a different preferred band (I chose "LTE ALL" in the LTE sub-menu and saved it). I put the SIM back in, powered the phone back up and LTE was working. However my signal bars haven't gone past one bar while on LTE. I get data, and can even send and receive MMS/SMS, but cannot send/receive calls.
Someone please tell me if I did something wrong or am leaving out any vital info.

Perhaps the radio should be updated. The latest official ATT radio is UCMD3.
Check if you have it under settings/about/phone status/baseband. It works on all builds but is the newest radio which improves signal sometimes.

Those appear to be as follows in the link I posted. The only difference i saw was BEARER: LTE (default is unspecified) play with this one.. that was different in the post.
Other then that, I know ATT and Tmobile only use LTE Band 4 in the USA anyways.
So LTE ALL under the service menu wouldnt help. Was your coverage always that bad?
Please someone with ATT help this poor soul out. I'm at wits end. Usually this would be something to bug your service provider about. Myabe they can refresh something on your account, or give you a newer SIM card at your local store.

Yes, unfortunately service has always been this bad. I have called AT&T several times/been to the AT&T store and talked to a representative and they have done the following:
- Checked/rechecked my IMEI number (it always matches)
- Checked and rechecked my SIM number (before AND after I received a new SIM card
- Unregistered/Re-registered my phone with the towers
- Called a tech out to the tower to make sure nothing is going on the them (I know its not, my buddies all have LTE running fine on their devices)
Thank you so much, scariola. You've been a helped all you can.
RESOLVED
I believe I have fixed the problem.
I dialed *#2263# to get to the Band Selection screen. I already had selected "LTE ALL" under the LTE Preference menu. I unselected it, chose Back and then End (both under the softkey menu). I then re-dialed *#2263# to get back into the Band Selection menu except this time I selected "Automatic" and chose End in the softkey menu. Re-inserted SIM, and rebooted.
No I get signal 3-5 bars, 4G and 4G LTE where strong signal is available.
I thought LTE was only data and could not be used for calls.

Right. The data is the 3g/4g connection and the symbol next to the bars is the data speed. The bars is the strength of the gsm/phone signal.
It actually sounds like the OP was involved in a tower maintenance scenario and probably didn't matter what he did.
You can do the same settings changing from the mobile data settings menu.
You can't do the same settings from the mobile data settings menu. There you can only mess with data bands. You can turn LTE off or on on my Canadian ROM but you can't use it as the only band. And I didn't think you could even change this on ATT ROMs/radios at all. I believe he used LTE as the one and only bands for phone and data which caused his issue. I have achieved this same result by messing with those band setting found by *#2263#.
However the ability to send/receive texts but no calls does not make sense. That could have been tower issues since they both use the same phone band.

Er, what?
Is that a JB thing because I know it wasn't present on the ATT ICS ROM. Also where is the LTE setting??
The default is "fastest available". If you choose the high speed setting, it will connect to whatever is best.
I assumed JB stock because the OP said he just got the phone.

It's on the canadian version of JB in the settings/mobile network. Missing from att JB though.
You can however force LTE only through the service menu. Att and tmobile use band 4. Not sure about anyone else.
You must dial *#2263# into dialer and select LTE and choose the band your provider supports. That will force LTE only. Dial the same thing into dialer and select automatic* to go back to jumping through LTE/WCDMA/GSM.
I understand it is on the Canadian version as I am using it. The Canadian version also includes LTE. I know how this all works. I have a Rogers note. But my question was to ranger on where he pulled that screenshot from. I always had an LTE option both on ICS and JB. And it was my understanding that ATT left this feature out on all versions and their modem was locked.
Sent from my SGH-I717R using xda premium
You can't force LTE if its not available. Its best to leave it at auto and let the modem do Its job of connecting to the best signal.

It may have been, but soon after I *thought* I had fixed the problem, the same issue restarted. I believe it was an issue with the phone hardware itself, maybe the antenna. I don't know. I sold the phone and got an S3.

LTE ONLY MODE vs LTE/GSM

I'm in a decent LTE area (DFW). Why can I have crappy 4G data and can't load anything. Then I dial *#*#4636#*#* and change to LTE ONLY and it loads LTE and extremely fast, but obviously can't accept calls. Why does the LTE/GSM not just stick on LTE instead of going 4G -_-

No I have the official T-Mobile version, it is running the latest firmware and radio as of last week. Running AOSP ROM AICP.
I mean it could possibly be due to them working on towers but it still seems weird that the phone wouldn't try to connect to LTE when ever it is possibly available. It might be a placaebo effect, but it just seems like the phone has been having way more delays loading things, even if the ping is low in Speed Test.

When the phone is set to LTE/GSM it will monitor signal thresholds to try and keep you from having a poor experience on LTE at the fringe. So that if it detects your LTE signal is low it will move over to 4G or even 2G to try and provide you a better experience. When you set it to LTE only then it stays on LTE as long as you have usable signal.
T-Mobile probably has the threshold set too conservative, but that doesn't explain your poor experience on 4g (HSPA). I live in DFW and my HSPA service is fast.
Im in Dallas. Main travel area is old east dallas and north central / north east dallas..
I can tell you that im happy with both HSDPA+ and LTE with them.
on the rare occasion i have had a reception / speed issue i find that power cycling my phone fixed it. Also make sure if you do that you have FastBoot disabled.

All Things "ServiceMode" Related

Thought I'd start a thread to compile everything we know about "ServiceMode" into a single thread, rather than having to go all over the place to find stuff.
What I know as of now:
As of now, I'm aware that you can enable access to the ServiceMode on a rooted VZW Note 3 by editing the /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu file and changing it from OFF to ON (uppercase is required).
For unrooted Note 3's, some have said there are some apps on the play store that will access the ServiceMode, but I have not been able to confirm these work.
Once ServiceMode access is enabled:
*#27663368378# takes you to the main menu where you can change various settings...most of which I don't know what they're for.
---Tips...the 'back button did not work for me and simply closed out of ServiceMode. Use the left 'Menu' key to bring up options, including 'Back'. Also, you can create a contact with the *#27663368378 number (minus the last #) and use that contact to 'copy to dialer' and save yourself from typing that number repeatedly.
To turn off Wifi Power Saving Mode:
Use either code above and at the ServiceMode screen, press the hard menu button, then select Wifi, then press the button under WIFI POWER SAVE MODE to turn it off.
To enable the new AWS band:
*#27663368378# to Main Menu, select [2]UE SETTINGS & INFO, then [1]SETTING, then select [2]SYSTEM, then select [9]NEXT PAGE and then select [4]VZW LTEB4 ON/OFF and finally select [1]B4 ENABLE ()...It should change to [1]B4 ENABLE (*) with an asterisk to show it is the selected option.
-- More information specific to the AWS settings can be found here. Thanks to @milan03
What I'm not sure about:
There is a setting under the RELEASE VERSION CONTROL menu for LTE 3GPP REL 9 and LTE 3GPP REL 10. Mine was set to REL 9, but I changed it to 10 and am going to see what happens. I google LTE 3GPP REL 10 and found some documentation. Not sure why I'd want to use an previous release of anything rather than the latest release. If anyone know what this is, please enlighten me.
I'm also not sure about most of the other settings and options. Are there any that we should change to get the best performance and connectivity from our Note 3's?
There are a lot of menus and a lot of settings. My hope is that this forum can become a one-stop-shop for what they all mean and what they should be set at for optimal performance. So, please....post away!
Waiting for confirmation:
CA setting stands for Carrier Aggregation and MAY increase data speeds. See the great post from @nutpn here!
DRX CONTROL appears to be a protocol to reduce network utilization and reduce device power consumption. The question is whether or not turning this protocol off will help network connectivity and/or speed AND what effect it has on battery performance. I will turn mine off and see if I notice anything on either front. However, I live and work in an area with very good coverage, so I'm not sure that I'd be a good test case for the network speed/connectivity portion. I will definitely monitor battery consumption. This setting can be found under [2]UE SETTTINGS & INFO, [1]SETTING, [1]PROTOCOL, [1]AS, [4]DRX CONTROL.
Thanks! I turned off wifi power save mode and now my wifi is way faster. Should of done this before. I also enabled the new bandwidth!

I just enabled it this evening, so I'll let you know tomorrow. I've typically been hooking up my phone to the charger when I go to bed at night with about 35% - 40% battery left...so I'll know tomorrow night if it's changed much. Also, it might be worth mentioning that I live in a suburb of DC, so I don't believe the AWS band is available here.

Not Just Wifi & AWS
Okay, keep in mind that I didn't want this to become a thread about just Wifi Power Saving & AWS band settings...there are already threads for those.
I'd like us to explore ALL the settings in ServiceMode and work together to figure out what they are and if there are any others that should be changed to enhance our phones.

Atlanta has AWS band? Great! Will try it out today as I am in the Atlanta area, south side. Get all bars of 4g service.
how do you edit the file? or what app do u use?
CA
CA enable/disable Short for Carrier Aggregation. Its disabled on our note3, the link below on qualcomms website details carrier aggregation that allows for faster speeds by piping carriers together on LTE advanced. A great informative article, there is also a downloadable pdf that has plenty more knowledgeable info. I enabled mine and will keep you informed, thanks for an awesome thread.

From the ServiceMode Main Menu:
[2]UE SETTINGS & INFO, [1]SETTING, [1]PROTOCOL, [1]AS, [2]RELEASE VERSION, [3]LTE 3GPP REL/CA CONTROL, [3]CA ENABLE
I enabled CA and went to an information screen, and it shows this:

Does the CA have to do with band 4? I have it enabled, but not forced. I'm currently on band 13. I was just wondering why it says it's wrong.

Awful reception everywhere?

Hello everyone,
First post on XDA woo!
Anyway. I've been with android for since the Galaxy Nexus and continued using the nexus line up until the Nexus 5. Recently I got bored of stock android so I wanted to try out the LG G3. I'm currently on T-Mobile and was able to get a Verizon LG G3 basically for free. Popped my SIM card in, set up a T-Mobile APN. It worked fine. However. I have NO signal almost anywhere I am at all times (school, home, when I'm out and about). Could this be because of my APN? Is it a faulty phone? Because I'm using t-mobile on a Verizon phone?
Thanks in advance guys!
(Ironically enough, I have decent signal in the screenshot. Haha, I promise it's a miracle)

Welcome to the XDA forums!
Actually your screenshot is showing only one bar of signal
What do you have the "Network Mode" set to? (Under the "System Select" settings.)
The 3 options are Global, LTE/CDMA, and LTE/GSM/UMTS.
For T-Mobile you probably need the LTE/GSM/UMTS mode.
Here is a thread where someone else set up their VS985 on T-Mo's network.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/factory-unlocked-lte-t-mobile-t2828543
Thanks for the warm welcome!
I checked my mobile settings and it was set to 'Global'. However when I tried switching it to either of the other two, options I get this error message (shown in the picture below).
I read the thread you posted. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything to help my specific case. I did find out that this phone reads a Band 4 LTE from T-Mobile. I went online and it seems that my area doesn't get Band 4 coverage for LTE. However even on my Nexus 5 I never got LTE because I think my data plan only, covered up to HSPA. Could this be a problem?
Thanks for the help.

Whoops. Forgot the screenshot. I don't know why but it's not letting me upload it.... Hmm. I'll just quote what it says.
"The network is not available. You can try global mode to see if alternate networks are available. Do you want to set network to global mode?"

I use a VS985 on T-mobile, so I would offer my 2 cents. The only LTE band it supports for T-mobile is band 4, so if it is not offered in your area, you won't get LTE, but you can still get H, which is still quite fast. Your APN setting is correct. The signal bar for T-mobile is always low, usually 1-2 bars, but the LTE does not seem to be affected by it. I am in the Bay Area, and I typically get around 25Mbps and can get up to 57Mbps when at late night. I think it has to do with T-mobile network than the phone. In fact, I get slightly better signal on G3 than my Nexus 5.
Hmm. I am out of ideas. I mean, my Nexus 5 got great signal throughout my daily routine. Now the LG G3, with the same SIM card and data plan, gets NO signal. Not just BAD signal. I mean NONE. I'm starting to think it may be a faulty hardware problem? I might try and return it and try my luck with another phone. What do you guys think?

I noticed a drop in signal strength when I flashed to Lollipop... Long story short I hated Lollipop and with the radio not as good just Flash back to 10B and setting it up now and will leave it there. I never had any issues with 10B
Someone here on XDA mentioned that the Nexus5 supports band 2 LTE, which T-Mobile uses increasingly as it "'re-farms" it's old gprs towers. I know the G3 doesn't, and I am pretty sure the Nexus5 doesn't either, but if the other poster was correct that could explain your observations.

I have Nexus 5 too, and that phone supports every band in the US including LTE band 2. T-mobile main LTE band is 4 but in some areas they use band 2, which is not support by G3. If you still have your Nexus 5, install LTE Discovery from Play store and you can check which LTE band you are on. If band 2, then you will need to sell your G3. Or I can sell my Nexus 5 to you, haha.
One more thing, I was playing around the Network mode on my G3, while it makes no difference in LTE reception, "LTE/GSM/UMTS" gives better 3G reception, so that is the mode you want your G3 to stay at.
Alright. So I tried the 'LTE Discovery' app. Unfortunately I couldn't learn anything as I don't actually recall ever getting LTE in my area (except at my fathers workplace a good ways a way. Probably since there is a cell tower right next door. Haha) Anyway. I'm thinking that the band receptors are my problem. I'm considering maybe returning this Verizon G3 and buying the T-Mobile G3 variant instead. Do you guys think I'll see any improvement?

Not if you are in a T-Mobile band2 LTE area. Even the T-Mobile G3 does not support band2 LTE. No LG G3 does.
It does support the high band, band21 I think, which is still more common for T-Mobile than band2. The vs985 doesn't support T-Mobile high band LTE. So, getting the T-Mobile G3 might help. Just remember that higher frequency bands tend to not penetrate buildings as well as lower frequency bands.
I looked at that LTE Discovery App... I would not leave that on your phone. It's a data miner.
Needs access to...
Device and App history
Location
Phone
Photos / media / files
Device ID and call info
Really all that. I don't think so. I would not install it at all. Just saying.
Some if these apps are crazy for what they want access to. I stay away from them.
