Hello everyone,
First post on XDA woo!
Anyway. I've been with android for since the Galaxy Nexus and continued using the nexus line up until the Nexus 5. Recently I got bored of stock android so I wanted to try out the LG G3. I'm currently on T-Mobile and was able to get a Verizon LG G3 basically for free. Popped my SIM card in, set up a T-Mobile APN. It worked fine. However. I have NO signal almost anywhere I am at all times (school, home, when I'm out and about). Could this be because of my APN? Is it a faulty phone? Because I'm using t-mobile on a Verizon phone?
Thanks in advance guys!
(Ironically enough, I have decent signal in the screenshot. Haha, I promise it's a miracle)

Welcome to the XDA forums!
Actually your screenshot is showing only one bar of signal
What do you have the "Network Mode" set to? (Under the "System Select" settings.)
The 3 options are Global, LTE/CDMA, and LTE/GSM/UMTS.
For T-Mobile you probably need the LTE/GSM/UMTS mode.
Here is a thread where someone else set up their VS985 on T-Mo's network.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/factory-unlocked-lte-t-mobile-t2828543
Thanks for the warm welcome!
I checked my mobile settings and it was set to 'Global'. However when I tried switching it to either of the other two, options I get this error message (shown in the picture below).
I read the thread you posted. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything to help my specific case. I did find out that this phone reads a Band 4 LTE from T-Mobile. I went online and it seems that my area doesn't get Band 4 coverage for LTE. However even on my Nexus 5 I never got LTE because I think my data plan only, covered up to HSPA. Could this be a problem?
Thanks for the help.

Whoops. Forgot the screenshot. I don't know why but it's not letting me upload it.... Hmm. I'll just quote what it says.
"The network is not available. You can try global mode to see if alternate networks are available. Do you want to set network to global mode?"

I use a VS985 on T-mobile, so I would offer my 2 cents. The only LTE band it supports for T-mobile is band 4, so if it is not offered in your area, you won't get LTE, but you can still get H, which is still quite fast. Your APN setting is correct. The signal bar for T-mobile is always low, usually 1-2 bars, but the LTE does not seem to be affected by it. I am in the Bay Area, and I typically get around 25Mbps and can get up to 57Mbps when at late night. I think it has to do with T-mobile network than the phone. In fact, I get slightly better signal on G3 than my Nexus 5.
Hmm. I am out of ideas. I mean, my Nexus 5 got great signal throughout my daily routine. Now the LG G3, with the same SIM card and data plan, gets NO signal. Not just BAD signal. I mean NONE. I'm starting to think it may be a faulty hardware problem? I might try and return it and try my luck with another phone. What do you guys think?

I noticed a drop in signal strength when I flashed to Lollipop... Long story short I hated Lollipop and with the radio not as good just Flash back to 10B and setting it up now and will leave it there. I never had any issues with 10B
Someone here on XDA mentioned that the Nexus5 supports band 2 LTE, which T-Mobile uses increasingly as it "'re-farms" it's old gprs towers. I know the G3 doesn't, and I am pretty sure the Nexus5 doesn't either, but if the other poster was correct that could explain your observations.

I have Nexus 5 too, and that phone supports every band in the US including LTE band 2. T-mobile main LTE band is 4 but in some areas they use band 2, which is not support by G3. If you still have your Nexus 5, install LTE Discovery from Play store and you can check which LTE band you are on. If band 2, then you will need to sell your G3. Or I can sell my Nexus 5 to you, haha.
One more thing, I was playing around the Network mode on my G3, while it makes no difference in LTE reception, "LTE/GSM/UMTS" gives better 3G reception, so that is the mode you want your G3 to stay at.
Alright. So I tried the 'LTE Discovery' app. Unfortunately I couldn't learn anything as I don't actually recall ever getting LTE in my area (except at my fathers workplace a good ways a way. Probably since there is a cell tower right next door. Haha) Anyway. I'm thinking that the band receptors are my problem. I'm considering maybe returning this Verizon G3 and buying the T-Mobile G3 variant instead. Do you guys think I'll see any improvement?

Not if you are in a T-Mobile band2 LTE area. Even the T-Mobile G3 does not support band2 LTE. No LG G3 does.
It does support the high band, band21 I think, which is still more common for T-Mobile than band2. The vs985 doesn't support T-Mobile high band LTE. So, getting the T-Mobile G3 might help. Just remember that higher frequency bands tend to not penetrate buildings as well as lower frequency bands.
I looked at that LTE Discovery App... I would not leave that on your phone. It's a data miner.
Needs access to...
Device and App history
Location
Phone
Photos / media / files
Device ID and call info
Really all that. I don't think so. I would not install it at all. Just saying.
Some if these apps are crazy for what they want access to. I stay away from them.

I'm in a decent LTE area (DFW). Why can I have crappy 4G data and can't load anything. Then I dial *#*#4636#*#* and change to LTE ONLY and it loads LTE and extremely fast, but obviously can't accept calls. Why does the LTE/GSM not just stick on LTE instead of going 4G -_-

No I have the official T-Mobile version, it is running the latest firmware and radio as of last week. Running AOSP ROM AICP.
I mean it could possibly be due to them working on towers but it still seems weird that the phone wouldn't try to connect to LTE when ever it is possibly available. It might be a placaebo effect, but it just seems like the phone has been having way more delays loading things, even if the ping is low in Speed Test.

When the phone is set to LTE/GSM it will monitor signal thresholds to try and keep you from having a poor experience on LTE at the fringe. So that if it detects your LTE signal is low it will move over to 4G or even 2G to try and provide you a better experience. When you set it to LTE only then it stays on LTE as long as you have usable signal.
T-Mobile probably has the threshold set too conservative, but that doesn't explain your poor experience on 4g (HSPA). I live in DFW and my HSPA service is fast.
Im in Dallas. Main travel area is old east dallas and north central / north east dallas..
I can tell you that im happy with both HSDPA+ and LTE with them.
on the rare occasion i have had a reception / speed issue i find that power cycling my phone fixed it. Also make sure if you do that you have FastBoot disabled.
Thats under power settings, make sure its not checked.

What's wrong with using Fast Boot?
it doesnt shut down apps properly..
its similar to hibernation.
Good to know, thanks.
According to the Sprint coverage map for my 75063 zip code, there is full Spark coverage here. Yet when I went to my Sprint store at North MacArthur and I-635, my Note 3 had full 4G LTE but their display One Max only showed 3G.
The girl that waited on me said that those maps show future coverage not current, and Spark isn't turned on here yet. She also said that it will only get Spark or 3G and isn't capable of getting 4G LTE. Those both sound fishy to me, but I don't want to get stuck with only 3G again like I did when I bought a Nexus 4 for LTE before it was turned on.
From what I've seen, many others are getting good signal in Spark areas and this is supposed to be one of them. I suspect either there is a setup the store didn't do or doesn't know how to do, or the switchers aren't set up yet as described in these articles:

How are others doing with their Sprint phones in this area?

I posted something similar to this in the q and a section. It is capable but the bands are disabled. A future upgrade is supposed to unlock them. I'm in a standard LTE area and only get 3g. Going to go to 4.4 as soon as the ruu is done and I'll see if that fixes it...

Is there a way/setting to allow this phone to use LTE for now, like my Note 3 does, until Spark is fully implemented, or has Sprint in their infinite wisdom decided that it can only do Spark or 3G?
I can sort of understand why they didn't include the 4G WiMax and LTE antennas in phones when that switchover was made, but Spark is just the capability of using three LTE radios together. Since the LTE radios are there, I would think/hope that it's possible. Or am I missing something?

Noticed for the last couple of days that the phone will switch to 3G when I know there is an LTE connection. Switching it into Airplane Mode and back kicks in LTE again. This happens frequently. I know there aren't many Verizon G3 users yet but I'm curious if anyone else is having this problem.
Could you post a picture of your back cover? I know people are wondering if it has Qi charging or not.

In regards to the 3G issue, you can try updating the PRL and see if that fixes the problem. I have similar issues with other devices. It deals with the SNR on the device. Most of the time the LTE signal is far lower than the 3G so it will switch.

Let's stay positive here lol..
This has been discussed with other phones. When the phone is performing actual phone operations (calls, texts, and other such communications), it is using 3G. Some manufacturers actually make it indicate this is happening with the switch back and forth. I've seen phones updated so it no longer does this because people assume it's a problem with the phone's reception.

Are you using VZW or AT&T? (your user info states AT&T). Most AT&T areas other than major cities and suburbs is not a 4g LTE connection, its HSPA, so your spectrum for your area may not be as strong. Secondly going to your local brick and mortar store and getting a new SIM is always a good starting point and one of the easiest possible fixes.
I'm using Verizon. My profile hasn't been updated.

This is happening to me too and is incredibly frustrating. I only got the G3 because my Moto X was destroyed by a roller coaster, but in areas where my Moto X easily kept 4G my G3 keeps dropping down to 3G, forcing me to fix it by activating airplane mode. I'm wondering if I should return it for a new one, or if this is a software issue that is affecting all phones. I have 13 days left to decide, but if this is affecting a wide range of users I may pick a different phone.
Just picked up a new G3 and new service provider in Verizon. Is it common to be stuck on 3G majority of the time in a decent size city? It sometimes in a blue moon switches to 4GLTE, but won't stay long.
I am with tmobile currently as well as that is my main carrier, but needed good coverage in the bad areas of Pennsylvania. Have awesome coverage where I live with tmobile, however with Verizon not so much.
Is it common?
I guess I have 14 days to decide. Any feedback greatly appreciated,

sorry i didn't actually help you in regards to your question.
The only time I see myself switch to 3g is where I have crappy service at my parent's place. Otherwise I don't have that issue..
However I'm also not in Pennsylvania so someone else may need to comment on that bit.
Perhaps they're doing tower upgrades over there?
The G3 gets really good reception, on par or better than the Motorola phones which are known to have excellent reception. I'd give it a day or so to settle along with a few restarts to see if you can grab an updated PRL. Outside of that Verizon may not be great in your area. I have to go outside to get a decent 4G signal, inside it's 3G most of the time.
That's the thing, I still have my T-Mobile phone. I actually live in Ohio, however work in PA and a little of West Virginia where I get no signal and can only make emergency calls. When in Ohio, where I live I get amazing 4G signal on lte. 40 down and 10 up to where on Verizon where I live I get 7 down and barely 1 up. It's crazy... Then again I am on 3G most of the time.
So wifi it goes....
Also is it normal to be on wifi and next to it the 4G/3G signal shows. I only have a gig of data is why I ask. Don't want unwanted charges on my bill.
T-Mobile g Flex unfortunately will still be my main phone. Unlimited everything.

I did this and at 1st it gave me full bars. I did a reset for some reason and when it came back it's back to 1 bar. Weird....So does this mean I'll stay on 4G and won't pan back to 3G, if so might need to be on global in order to get signal in bad areas.
Thanks though, see what happens.
Things to try:
Power off take out the sim, power back on without sim, power off and put sim back in.
Call Verizon and have then send an update to your sim card.
Factory reset your device
Get a new sim card

It's a new phone and I would have to already take put the SIM. I mean I will as I dont get why I am constantly on 3G. Thought Verizon was good at penetrating buildings for 4G.
Not to mention even when I am on 4G it's no where near the speeds my tmobile phone gets.
Might have to chalk it up to so many people on big red....I guess as long as I get signal in the boonies I'll be okay. Just a little disappointed.
Thanks for the help.
I had this same issue and switching it from Global to CDMA/LTE fixed it for me. I've read that it shouldn't matter if it's on Global.... But I clearly saw the difference.
This G3 gets the same or better reception that my S4 does. I'm happy with it

You should be on 4G, if it is available in your area. Signal strength is the main reason it'll drop to 3G, but that's only when your 4G signal drops above -100 dBm. Somewhere around the -115 is where mine decides it's better to switch to 3G. I even get some 1X's here at my desk, but I've got a crappy signal at my desk. If you're on 3G most of the time, then there's a problem. As stated earlier, take the following steps:
FDR (Factory Data Reset.) You'll lose everything, so back it up.
Go into the VZW store and tell them you want another SIM card. (Try not to handle it with your fingers and tell them not to handle it with theirs either.)
Replacement phone is the only other alternative.
If none of the above works, then you probably do need to switch back to T-Mobile. Just remember, you only have 14 days to figure this out!
Have you looked at a coverage map? Verizon does have excellent coverage but all carriers have holes

I've posted on this several places. I also use an rs988 on cricket. While I still had my Nexus 5x, I compared signals using the Network Cell Info app on both phones in a variety of locations.
It seems the RS988 G5 does not use band 17 when it should, even though the specs day is capable, this does not always show 4G.
I think it's a glitch in nougat on this model. I've reported this to LG.

The good news is that it seem to have 4G most of the time. When it does drop to HSPA, it makes little difference. Even if I don't have wifi, I can browse the web, check email, and steam audio/video just fine using HSPA.
But I do hope LG will fix the problem in a software update. Some people claim band 17 works fine on this model on Marshmallow.

I called them and they told me it I was going to have to send the phone in for repair. They don't think is a software issue.
They told me it was something else. Plus they blame Google for the software if it is that.

Yep, that's their stock answer. They told me the same thing. But I figured they'd just send me a refurbished phone with the same issue, so declined.
"Send it back" would make sense if no one else had identified the issue. But take a look in this forum and others, and you'll see that it has been reported by several people using the AT&T network (which includes cricket and others).
BTW, how much of the time are you seeing HSPA instead of LTE? Have you tried running speedtest when you see HSPA? On cricket, it doesn't make a huge difference for me. LTE is capped at 8mbps and HSPA at 4mbps.
If you do send it back, be sure to keeps us posted. Good luck!
