Help justify not going back to iphone... - G2 General

I am having a hard time switching from iphone to the G2. Now I am no apple fan boy but I am finding myself confused. Any suggestions? Do I just need to get used to it?
I have laid out the Pro's and con's of each that I can think of. I am in the mobile business (enterprise sales) and make super heavy use of my phone so it's critical that it works for me.
G2 Pro's
Large Screen
Better Notifications
Swype Keyboard
Can do more with Android
Battery life is sick
G2 Con's
Some parts of UI are just plain choppy
Camera button next to home key, easy to hit
Screen brightness adjusting is terrible
Large Screen also a negative, need two hands now
Android apps get less love
Harder to hold in hand
Damn lock screen does not wake on notification
Sound is not the best. Meaning speaker
Lack of accessories
iPhone 5S Pro's
Apps get more love
Easy to hold in one hand
I like the device quality better. (ie aluminum)
Better selection of accessories
Better camera IMO
Just works. (droid is like computer, iphone like phone.)
iPhone 5S Con's
IOS7 is horrid. Inconsistent. I know what I am talking about. i'm a developer
Small screen
Lack of customization

Personally I have no issue holding in one hand the g2. It's ui for me is pretty smooth. The only thing I can't reach with one hand is the notification bar which you can get a button in the navigation bar. I can easily say I've played with plenty of iPhone and I am not very interested in them. For me screen size, battery life of this phone wins hands down.
Camera I don't use to much so can't say which I like better.
I've owned a lot of phones including most iPhones and I trade the iPhone's far quicker than android just because the battery life on my use maybe gets 4 hours.

Apple Apps get more love? Not recently and that trend is really changing quite a bit. Developers are a shifting to more higher quality apps in favor of Android in the past year, apple has been in a slow decline in quality apps while android has excelled substantially. This is true. 2 years ago I was full on Android and I can see they have made huge improvements. I suppose this case is minor because I only hit one app like this. It's a lap timer for running sports cars on a track. Neat app but Android version is not very good. Most small devs will focus on only one platform like in this case. I could always get a ipod touch instead for my track days.

You talking about Harry's? If so a full android app is in dev, there's a lite version without video right right now..

Ha not mine mate, a friend of mine has a track car and I sometimes go along for the ride and play with the video set-up. He has an old 3g mounted low down on the front bumper, a go-pro and his iphone 5 on the dash. It's a great app I agree.

I think that if you enjoy iOS more, get an iPhone. If you like Android more, stick with the G2.
The only issue I suffer from on your cons list is the brightness adjustment time. To each their own....

I really dislike IOS7. Stupid ass went and made it look dumb.

I came from an iPhone 4S (the 3GS before that). I was constantly jailbreaking it to get the functionality I wanted from it, some of which iOS just now implementing (SBSettings users know what I'm talking about). I've now owned the G2 for about a month and a half and not once had the urge to return to iPhone. 24-36 hours of battery life on regular usage - heavy gaming, e-mail/forum checking, reading Flipboard, streaming music/video. Reading books/news/txt/e-mail, watching video, and playing games on this beautiful screen has been a great experience.
As for most of your issues, I haven't experienced such problems. But, I'm sure you understand that customization, right out of the box, is one of Android's greatest strengths. There are ways to correct some of your issues, as you'll find if you hang around this forum for a while. Some solutions may involve easy minor tweaks. Some of them are actually found in the app store and no, root is not always needed.
You want your Android phone to wake-on-notification? There's an app for that - DynamicNotifications. Try doing that with Apple's app store. (Please correct me if I'm wrong about this on stock iOS) People making useful apps that change the phone's actual functions - that's real app love. Accessory support for this phone is increasing all the time (the Best Skins Ever matte/glossy just came out for the phone this week). What kind are you looking for? There's an entire forum here dedicated to that.
There's no need to return to a phone with a smaller (and lesser ppi/resolution) screen and lower battery life. Stay with the phone you really want, but make sure you see the G2's real potential first.

I've been using the Lux brightness app (free version) and it works great. It even has the ability to "learn" how you like your brightness settings in different light settings.

if the G2 screen size is a negative to you, then you should go back to the iphone. My mom has one and loves it, so does my 11 year old nephew.

Here you go

If there's any doubt go back to what you know. You sound like customers that want to go from iphone and try a android for the first time. I tell them stick to what you know if you never been interested in android this whole time since your upgrade was avaliable then go with what you know works for you

I don't like to discourage people from trying new platforms. Even if it's something new, and completely different from what you're used to.
With that said, if you are trying ANY new platform, especially one that is significantly different that what you are used to, you have to be prepared for mixed results and some frustration as you learn a new system.
Let's look at the reverse. I am a long time Android user. Every time I pick up an iPhone, I find myself annoyed by the things that I can't or the functions I can't figure out how to use or implement. I do eventually figure it out, either by finding where it is and how to do or use it, or by finding that it is not possible on an iPhone. Generally it is the latter. And that is why I have stayed on Android. There's a way to do just about anything, provided you're willing to learn how to do it. iPhone users likewise pick up my phone and if they are having a hard time figuring out how to do something, I can just show them the quick way to do it. Heck, if I can teach my mom to do everything on her S4, a developer like you can definitely figure this out. Just about everything you mentioned as cons is changable sans the screen size, and I think you'll grow to like the sharpness of it and all that real estate, and the accessories market, which indeed is not huge but there are plenty of good options.
If you go in expecting there not to be cons and a learning curve with a new and different platform, then no matter what it is you are going to be disappointed. Go in with an open mind and stick with it a while, learn how to use it and give it a real chance, and even if you decide you prefer your iPhones, I think you will come to appreciate just how powerful Android, and the G2 itself, are.

Once u go big u cant go back. Try to go back to iphone. U will come back.

You're a developer....why not have both? Make apps for both platforms & have the best of both worlds? I use an iphone for work & have the G2 for personal. Done

You just need someone to show you what's up. Some hand over hand guidance. Are you a hot chick? I'll come over.

@op Ultimately it is your choice, we can only tell you our point of view. I have owned the G2 and 5s. Im actually getting another G2 tomorrow. It really depends on what is most important to you.
The 5s is a great phone, it works flawlessly. It just does. Its fast, fluid, web browsing speed is INSANE ( no phone loads web pages faster than it), excellent build quality, great choice of apps and all. When i bought the 5s at launch, it was because i wanted to get away from android a little because i use it so much that i just wanted to try something different and since IOS had an UI revamp i wanted to give it a shot. I love the iphone 5s, it does everything a phone should do very well. Excellent call quality, great speakers, great camera and all. But at the end of the day i just got bored, plain and simple. The customizability is just not there and im the kind of person that needs features. I knew that going in to the 5s but i thought that since the UI changed i could use it for a good 3 months or so....got rid of it after a week. And the major problem for me is that i just couldnt get use a 4 inch display, i cant. Battery life is not that great either.
The G2 is also a great device. Its a beautiful looking phone especially at the front with the super slim bezels and not buttons and the back with its unique button placement. It gives it a personality, it stands out. The size of the screen is PERFECT! I love it, its the absolute perfect size for a smartphone in my opinion. The phone is fast, super customizable even on stock. Arguably the most customizable phone out there and has plenty of features. Battery life? Superb! Camera with OIS as well. On the downside the back is glossy, very slippery and attracts finger prints like crazy. Also even though the phone is fast, it does suffer from occasional stutter here and there. But nothing cant be fixed. Nova launcher, AOSP roms, LG UI based roms all have an answer. So the device can and will definitely get better. Its a power house with plenty of power under the hood.
I think for you OP it comes down to IOS or android. Unfortunately we cant have it all at the same time so you gotta make a choice. If i had to make a choice to keep one of those 2 phones for 2 years i would certainly go for the G2. Both phones have pros and cons and its about compromise. I rather live with a 5.2 inch display with great battery life and lots of power to spare with development growing than be stuck on something that works pretty much flawlessly but little to no customization, a tiny display and so so battery life.

everything software related you listed can be done with an app. want the sms to wake the screen? get smsawake.
the launcher a bit choppy? yeah I had this problem too because the Verizon version of the launcher redraws more than any other carrier... so i said f it, I bought nova launcher years ago, so i put that on and got myself a custom icon pack called axis, and bam. a cooler, smoother customized ui. I've never had any choppiness anywhere except the launcher and now that's fixed.
don't like the audio? try one of many EQ apps. the problem here is the software has a really bad built in compressor and limitor combination that compresses everything and doesn't reproduce good sound from the speaker. I'm still looking for ways to disable this. however, you can try Viper to get a huge customizable EQ and whatnot.
for the phone being too big, well you'll get used to it. I remember when I had my og Inc and thought 4.3 inches on the rezound was huge.. and that the gs3 was GIGANTIC... and then the droid dna, and i said I'd never go bigger than 5 inches.. and now i have the g2 and it feels better than all of them.
point being, you'll get used to size.
attached is my setup with nova and axis icons. nova has never been smoother on any phone I own than it is on the g2. the animations aren't even this smooth on the gs4 running aosp... so i can't even blame it on touchwiz lol

Evo 3D vs Epic 4g Touch (I'm a writer, sorry)

So I owned the Epic 4g Touch for about 6 months and then just last week traded down to the 3vo (along with some cash, to save up for the next Evo...gotta start saving now people!). The reason why, mostly, is because the dev section here is better and I miss Sense. AOSP fans, you can stop booing now.
So I've made some comparisons based on my 6 months with the Epic Touch and now my week with the Evo 3D (having it properly rooted, s-off and flashing some fun roms here and there).
Pros for the Epic Touch.
1. Beast chipset. Quadrant scores were amazing, but even for the benchmark haters the phone rarely lagged. Never lagged actually, unless you forced it to or you were using Google Voice (which will lag everything, I don't care what it is). Never a bump in performance in anything from Playstation Emulators to pinch to zoom. Watch review videos. Butter smooth.
2. Epic camera. Most people, like me, depend on their phone camera as their only camera because we can't afford to have a hobby like buying $600 cameras (because we already have an expensive hobby called Android phones) nor do we have a bag or pocket to carry said camera. The Epic Touch camera was awesome. Great pictures in any light, barely any fuzz or loss of focus for zooming into pictures already taken. Great settings, 1080p video shooting (which, when it worked, was phenomenal).
3. The big, gorgeous screen. I don't care for you little finger people complaining about it. I'm a 25 year old man and the guy who drills holes into my bowling ball says I have the fingers of a skinny teenage girl and that giant screen was nowhere near "too much" for me. It was big, beautiful, you could see it in sunlight, took up less battery life (if you set it up properly) and was just all around wonderful. 4.5" should be the industry standard, not 4.3". It really does make a difference.
Cons agains the Epic Touch:
1. Touchwiz is f*cking ugly and useless. No cohesion or synergy in Touchwiz at all. No messaging widget, no Social Hub widget, the calender, mail, weather and clock widgets all look like they came from wildly different themed ROMs. Social Hub didn't work for the first 2 months of the phone's life, the iPhone-style dock and app drawer lent no imagination or originality (no wonder they're getting sued left and right) and it was wildly scaled back from the OG Galaxy S 2. They keyboard was ugly as all hell. Hated the Touchwiz. Even the lockscreen was useless and stupid. The overscroll glow was blue and the battery indicator was green...who designs **** like that? Don't get me started on the 4g "dozing" feature. If you don't use 4g for 10 seconds, it goes to sleep and it is a ***** to wake up. You gotta open up an app like facebook or twitter, then go to your web browser. Absurd.
2. No developer support. The guy who did CM7 over there was a 15 year old who stole phones from people (no, really, he'd borrow a phone or propose a trade and a moron would accept and then wouldn't get their stuff...he also ripped off some people who wanted to donate a t-mo sgs2 to a developer for cm7...asshole). The custom kernels are all the same features with a slightly themed CWM recovery. Nothing original and all the ROMs are more or less the same with maybe one unique feature. Calk's rom had an htc keyboard, unnamed rom had themed icons...nothing really special. Since our AOSP devs are felons and, frankly, code thieves, we're stuck with Touchwiz over there unless you like MIUI...everyone else = boned.
3. The feel of the phone. The battery door was plastic. Not the super thick, awesome plastic like the battery door to the 3vo, but like flimsy child's toy plastic. The kind that shatters when you drop it. In fact, the whole phone minus the screen felt cheap and plasticky. I used to complain about it before I bought a samsung, now I've owned one and I can say from experience. Yeah, they're going for sleek and light, but how sleek can you feel holding a phone that's made with the same quality of plastic as a Barbie doll? When I did buy a case, the damn thing was too weak to keep it's own battery door on when I removed the case. Seriously, don't drop this phone on thick carpet, it might not work again.
Now for the Evo 3D. Pros:
1. HTC Sense is, as usual, beautiful. The applications, like friend stream, work like they should, the widgets are all cohesive and look like they belong together. With HTC Skins you have a plethora of theming options, you can customize the lockscreen to suit your needs (and the lockring idea is freaking awesome, admit it). The keyboard is nice and it works. HTC Sense may be giant and bloated, but all the pieces fit together in a synergistic manner that makes the phone feel more complete and that's not only hard to do, but a huge plus for Sense over Touchwiz.
2. The dev support here is better. The ROMs are actually different from one another and not just the same base with a few unique tweaks. MeanROM looks and feels completely different from Myn Warm (either one of them). There's Sense 3.0, 3.5. There's AOSP builds (3 of them, last I counted. 2 CM7 and a CM9...none work quite right yet but they're getting there). There's Sense 4.0 alphas out. There's kernels with characteristics that are different from one another. It is possible to have a more unique experience with this phone than the Epic Touch because with the Epic Touch, there's simply not as many good developers as there are here.
**note** I know development around here has been slowing down lately. Hopefully that'll turn around once they release kernel source for the latest Sense build. Plus, and this is minor, you can change the splash screen on this phone. You can't on a samsung device.
3. It's very well built. It's got heft, so you can feel it in your pocket. It feels and looks like it could take a drop or two before you start to worry (my cases are in the mail as we speak ), the notification light actually works and blinks often enough that I know I have a text message. There's a dedicated camera button. The hardware, the chipset notwithstanding, could whip the hardware on a galaxy s 2's ass any day of the week.
And the cons:
1. HTC and releasing kernel source. Seriously, I've spent maybe 33% of the time I've been an Evo owner (4g and 3d) waiting for HTC to release kernel source so we could get some custom kernels on newer builds before the devs got bored and jumped to a nexus s or a galaxy nexus. Looks like that's what's happening here too. Hopefully there's some adventurous people when it is released so we have those awesome kernel options like before.
2. The chipset is obviously inferior to the exynos. I love the evo series, i love htc, but you can't deny that. exynos is beast and whatever is in this phone doesn't stack up. While the lag isn't terrible (not enough to affect daily usage), it's still there and noticeable, which is kind of a bummer for a dual core device. Additionally, anyone else notice that data goes to sleep when the phone does? My google music sounds like a bad cd player when it goes to sleep so I have to leave it awake until it buffers the whole song or the song literally skips. That's kinda lame.
3. The camera, while better than the OG Evo, is much weaker than the Epic Touch. A lot of fuzz in low light settings and it just doesn't look like as high quality as the Epic Touch. Don't get me started on the 3D. I have taken one picture and shot one video. It gave me a headache, no more 3D for me. I would've traded in 3D capacity for the Amaze 4g's camera sensors any day of the week.
Overall, I do like the 3vo better. Despite it's shortcomings, it feels like a more complete device than an Epic Touch. The UI matches itself, you can customize without rooting (and even more after rooting), there's a stronger dev section and a more active IRC chat. It feels better in the hand weight wise and is built better materials wise (I still miss my giant screen to play video games with). Dedicated camera button ftw. There's more working features and fewer bugs than Touchwiz (google Epic Touch LOS...and start laughing lol). Both devices will eventually have ICS, so it's not like you can hold that against either one. I just hope our CMs get done eventually (i don't care about the 3D, but the other stuff kinda matters).
Sorry if this has been done already...actually no, no I'm not. It was fun to write.
Nice write up . Each phone has cons and pros. I like the amount of roms and root option on the EVO 3D hate bloatware

Good job, sir.
It's always refreshing to read reviews this far along into a phone's release, especially with two phones such as these. Reason being, there will always be those who purchased a phone on or around the release date, and may have been swayed by pre-release reviews or initial release reviews. Months (or in some cases, days) later, the inevitable hint of flip-flopdom or regret sinks in, and the decision to buy another phone off-contract sets in. Additionally, there are those who bought a phone off-contract and are currently in their upgrade period; users such as myself who are holding out as long as possible for an LTE release rather than burning the upgrade on an older Wimax phone, for example.
These mid-release reviews help to quench or fuel the desire to ditch the current phone and toy around w/ the competition. Phones that have been out 6+mo typically get left out of the review mix as writers tend to constantly focus on upcoming models...understandably so. But I'm willing to bet there are good number of folks who appreciate reviews such as these when the antsy feeling sets in that a ROM flash just won't cure. Thanks again for the write-up!

Lol recognized developer is a application u fill out to get. Seen a few good roms from folks that don't have the thing. Just cause they don't have the label doesn't mean the rom is bad some just don't have time to fill a application out others are just happy pumping roms out..
Some roms are sweet lol. Tho some phones don't have a lot of dev support due to root support and phone popularity ..

While there are far more Rec Devs for the Evo 3D, the point I was going for was that the ROMs here are more unique. MeanROM boats 3000 quadrant scores and high battery life, Myn's Warm boasts a beautiful theme with some improvement tweaks. There's Fresh ROM which (if my memory from the Evo 4g serves me right) is a stock ROM with nothing missing that's been lightly modded for a better experience. Then we have 2 CyanogenMod 7 ROMs (hopefully the bugs get fixed for those some day), a CyanogenMod 9 ROM (alpha), a Sense 4.0 preview, a couple stable Sense 3.5 Roms, MIUI, a couple of Sony Bravia/Xloud ROMs, etc etc.
For the Epic Touch, there's a CM7 I wouldn't trust to test (not even allowed on XDA), let alone use, there's MIUI but it's not complete (yet)...then you have a dozen or so ROMs that have almost exactly the same features but are themed slightly differently. Go look, they all have TSM Parts, Maddoggin's lockscreen Mod and/or an AIO mod done by crawrj. Then it's MAYBE one or two original tweaks or features (like calk's htc_ime keyboard mod). There's basically no difference between the ROMs besides the "light theming" so the experience is almost exactly the same between ROMs. I can't sacrifice battery life for more speed, they all have the same battery and speed tweaks. The last month I had the phone, I was using Team Nocturnal's Sony Bravia Port ROM, because it was the only one that was any different from the others.
/rant lol but yes, it is nice to have more "trustworthy" individuals devving for us here. I hope they stick around and release even more stuff once HTC catches up releasing the source for the kernel.
Sup college guy.
Agree on your rant. But still wanna get an e4gt.

Cool story, bro
Nice article. I would however mention that the E4GT does get a decent amount of development, while not as much as the EVO 3D, it's still getting it. And even if Bubby made CM7, why's it hindering the E4GT development scores?
Thanks for sharing your experience. I always wonder what's it like on the SG2 camp.

Becuase Bubby didn't make CM7, about half a dozen people made CM7 and Bubby simply swiped their Git, made his own, compiled it and released it. Remember, it's not allowed on XDA for a reason Keep in mind I'm also an XDA Writer, and as such base my development scores on what's actually on XDA. Plus, I am not a fan of Rootzwiki. All the trolls go there and pretend like they weren't a part of the "XDA problem" they spend all day complaining about over there.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone...it's just a very... homogeneous atmosphere. A lot of the "same stuff" being re-released under a different name and theme. The phone is still very nice.

Nice post , having both I would clearly say the epic is ahead of the 3d . Your right about the epic dev support not being as much as the 3d. IMO touchwiz isnt as bad as some people make it out to be . Its fast , clean , and I would prefer it right now over sense . Now that might change when sense 4.0 comes out ,but sense is just too slow . Build quality is superb on the epic, the 3d has a nice build also but IMO the epic wins that catigorty. Light isn't always cheap, Both are good phones!!!

What about the screen on the E3D? You haven't commented either way, but couldn't praise the Samsung's screen enough.

Can't decide..

I can't decide if I want a DNA or iPhone 5. I have my upgrade may 1. I have owned 2 android phones that both have given me issues ( xperia play and LG Lucid. ) I have experienced multiple issues on both android devices therefore it makes me nervous about getting another android device. IPhones on the other hand, my friends have had very few issues, unless dropped but of course I would keep a case on my iPhone. Could you guys help me decide?

HTC Droid DNA has been a VERY solid phone for me. I'd choose DNA over iPhone 5 any day.

do you like customization? do you like a full 1080p high Def screen? do you like a quad core processor with 2 gigs of ram?
the phones you had, well, sucked. they were very low end android phones. the Lucid is terrible lol we used to sell that.. made me a huge profit but I hated selling it. the xperia was meh. the dna is a premium high end device.
people with iPhones "don't have issues" because you can't do everything on them you can on an Android. for example, people don't complain about errors or force closing on iPhones because when an app force closes, they don't tell you it's performed an error. it just backs out to the home screen, ans doesn't tell you why. most people think "oh just a small glitch, I'll uninstall and reinstall the app..." and then it's fixed.
believe me, when I worked at Verizon, I saw more idiots with iPhones with problems than I thought could possibly exist. I couldn't believe that many people didn't even know how to use an iPhone. good god.

No one can really decide for you, but my friend got the iPhone 5 coming from a droid razr and then I got my dna and let him use it and he wished that he stayed with android. What are you looking to do on your phone. The droid dna can do just about everything. Where as the iPhone 5 doesn't have some features the dna has. The specs aren't really even comparable in my opinion, the dna beats all of the iPhone.

I carry both of them if there's anything you're wondering about just send me a PM.
My general rule of thumb is if you plan to jailbreak your iPhone don't bother with an iPhone and get an Android. And if that's the case the DNA is the first phone I've used to take iPhones out of some long time iDevice family members hands.
If you say to yourself you are 100 percent satisfied with an iPhone out of the box and just want something that doesnt need to be customized or anything, then it's something you might want to consider.

Its a tough call I really I like them both. That said if it was me I would wait it out and look at the HTC One and the iPhone 5S and see which one I like better. If the iPhone 5S comes with a 4+ inch screen and iOS 7 gets a overhaul it maybe a tough call. Despite what the android guys says (most have actually never owned the iPhone 5 (I have)) its a really solid device. Issue is its boring you can't do a lot with it. I like to tinker but to be honest even that gets boring after a while. So if you want something that without a doubt is going to work almost 100% of the time AND you like getting updates for your device on a regular bases then the iPhone is a clear winner. Its fast and it works.
One more thing what HTC has done to Sense 5 I might as well go back to the iPhone. The new Sense brings nothing to the table for me.

The great thing about android is if you want a different look then you change it to what you want. There are very few reported issues as far as software go with android is concerned since the era of jellybean. Android biggest issue is the different hardware that is has to be optimized for. Dna stock is really refined but I for one like to change things up at min once a week. We can't tell you what to chose but if choice is an issue then android is your best bet because you can make it perform like any phone you want.

The iPhone is a solid choice simply because it's so tightly controlled there is very little that can go wrong with it. The LTE is fast, processor and memory are very capable for the OS, battery is good, and everyone who releases an app makes it for the iPhone....usually first.
That being said, and I've been on both sides of the fence, I personally prefer Android devices. Two things keep me away from iOS. First is the screen size. Showing my age here, but I'm pushing 40 and a 3.5-4" screen really doesn't do it for me anymore. Especially after using things which are so easy on the eyes in the 4.3-5" range; it's difficult to get used to an iPhone size again. At the present I'm using a DNA for a few major reasons, namely the display is gorgeous, build quality is fantastic, and the open/customizable nature of Android gives me freedom that an iPhone never will. One thing that kind of surprised me after going to the DNA was that I find myself actually surfing the web on this phone. With the iPhone's cramped screen, surfing the web is do-able, but almost pointless - you'd be much better off on a desktop. However web page rendering on the DNA with the much larger screen, is actually very capable of basic surfing/checking news, etc. I go to my desktop less, especially when I'm working in my lab and need a quick lookup on something; I go to the DNA. iOS itself is very restrictive compared to Android.
My suggestion - if you mainly use a phone for phone calls, text, and apps, then go for an iPhone. If you spend time surfing the web, doing some customizing or tinkering with the innards, as well as calling and texting, go with the DNA. To be honest you can't really go wrong either way; they're just different.
Good luck with your decision, and hopefully we'll see you around these forums after your final decision.
I had a difficult time making that decision as well when I had upgraded a month ago (from a thunderbolt), although the whole integration thing was appealing with the iphone (have an ipad already, plus other family members have iphones), I had decided to go with the dna instead because of the ability to tinker with it and such, enjoy doing that sort of stuff

The thing is though.... you can do that all on the DNA. I would say the DNA on stock is a very stable capable phone and Sense imho looks brilliant over iOS.
I agree though, most apps do come out on the iPhone first due to the platform being more stable and easier to dev for in the beginning.... We'll probably see that change over the course of time with JB and onward though.
I agree with everything said here. It was really a tough for me to decide especially since I use Mac computers, iPad, Apple TV, Time Capsule, etc.. but on android you can flash stuff and try different things if you want too. Its nice having that ability. When I had the iPhone I found myself a little board. I didn't have anything to develop, and everything I had learned to do on android seem to be going to waste.

But then your thumb can't reach all corners of the phone's screen!!
It amazes me when people mention that in reviews of devices, especially when it's a 5 ft guy reviewing it [usually small hands to begin with]. It's neither a pro nor con that's worth mentioning imo
Sarcasm aside, it would be interesting to see Apple come out with a 4+ in screen especially after watching some of their advertisements and events.
All I know is I got my girlfriend the iPhone5 when I bought my DNA and she has more problems than I do.
The only time i've had ANY issue on my DNA is when I screw something up myself from a mod or ROM that I knew was wonky.
My girlfriend on the other hand? Her favorite comment is "I guess i'm done with [insert name of the app that just force closed here" because her iPhone will force close anything from Facebook to the built in camera app.
It makes me laugh because i've always wondered if i'd be happier with an iPhone but I never pulled the trigger and now I know i'll be sticking with Android for the near future at the very least.
Also, her battery life is only slightly better than mine. By 6PM i'm usually sitting around 80% (I don't use my phone much during the day and I have a wireless charger it's on occasionally) but she always has to charge her phone before we go out for the night and I don't.

I'd like to start by saying that I love my DNA its a great device. That said I never had any of those issues on my iPhone 5 none.. also the battery life on mine was kick as$ I could go two days without charging it. Sounds kind of like she needs a hard reset.
My personal opinion is that you should def. get the DNA. In general, if you're going to choose a low grade Android or an iPhone I would recommend the iPhone. I would; however, recommend that a person spend a little bit of money and get a high end Android phone every time. It is well worth the $100-$150 to for a 2 year investment. If it makes you feel better break it down by month. If you do that's about $6.25/month for a completely awesome phone.
I think im sold to the DNA.. about 20 days and I can own one!

I agree with this. Both devices are capable of doing whatever you need. However, you are limited to what you can do with and without jailbreak on iOS. For example, I didn't like the HTC sense look but don't have root yet so I installed nova launcher... You can't do that on iOS. Don't like lock screen? You can change without root on Android. So on... But at the same time I would keep stock on iOS cause the other stuff doesn't look good in my opinion. (i like stock. That's why I want root for cm 10.1). Ask yourself what you are looking for and ask yourself if you are bored of iOS or bored of Android?
I recommend the DNA because I like the hardware and android, but don't let me pick for you. ^_^ (keep in mind there isn't a root for the DNA right now if you have ota so if it's not out by when you get it, you'll have to pay for jtag or use sense )

What I love about android is that I can change anything I want. If I want to I can:
change the lock screen
add widgets
change launcher
change icons
remove unwanted applications
save email attachments
change file associants (make chrome your default web browser)
ringtone trimmer set any mp3 as a ringer
set any image as a wallpaper
much, much, more..
thats the stuff that sells me.
DNA is awesome fast Quad-core CPU, Adreno 320 GPU, 1080P Display, NFC, Wireless Charging. . . 2GB RAM. Its awesome.
If he wants to tinker with it he will have to wait until the new firmware is unlockable, or he can jtag it.

My LG G2 review - coming from stock Android (Nexus One/S/4/7)

Hi Guys,
After owning several iPhones back in the day (up to the 3GS) and then Nexus One, Nexus S and Nexus 4 (skipped the Galaxy Nexus) and a Nexus 7 tablet, always on (unrooted) stock Android, I couldn't resist the temptation and got myself a 32GB LG G2 (European version).
Why not wait a few weeks for the Nexus 5 ?
The main reason is that the LG G2 has just the perfect hardware specs for me, there is nothing I would realistically want more. The Nexus 5 will have smaller screen and smaller battery. Also, the last 3 versions of Android did not bring any significant useable stuff to the table in order to make me really want to update, so the newest Android update is not so important to have.
The other reason is that I am really bored of stock Android. There are some things that Google will stubbornly never add or change, and I'm not one to install custom ROMs all day. For example, I can't set different sound volumes for the call ringtones and notification ringtones. And the notification LED is so neglected by the stock Android (on phones that have it). I gave my "old" Nexus 4 to my girlfriend, and although she loves to speed over her old Galaxy S Advance, she immediately begun asking where are the "gimmicks" that Samsung included into its software and that she used all the time. This is saying something.
One minor reason is that I have had hardware problems ALL of my Nexus devices, despite the fact that I take great care of them: the Nexus One's power button became loose and broke over time (HTC support really sucks !), the Nexus S capacitive sensor burned in a corner (display assembly replacement), the Nexus 7 speakers broke and now sound is very distorted. The Nexus 4 screen was a bit yellowish when I received it, I read that it's from the glue bonding the glass layers, it improved over time but never had the correct colors, it always had a subtle yellow tint to it.
Why LG G2 ?
Just a quick glance at the competition and my previous experience with various brands made me choose the G2. The iPhone is really out of question due to the microscopic screen and lack of notification LED (it's incredible how a business user can live without a notification LED), the Galaxy S4 and HTC One have outdated hardware (I mean, if I pay the same price, why not get the latest hardware), the HTC One has a microscopic, unusable notification LED (and I don't wish you to need something from the HTC technical support !), the Galaxy Note 3 is really too big. I have never used a spare battery with any of my phones, and never used a microSD card, so these missing features are just not minuses for me. The lack of removable battery (and thus the inclusion of a bigger battery) is in fact a huge plus.
The Motorola MotoX has a very nice notification feature, but it pulsates too slow (indicating battery concerns) and the rest of the hardware is too average and I can't see it as an upgrade over the Nexus 4 (plus it's not available in Europe although I could get it if I really wanted to).
The LG G2 hardware
I will say that the excellent, biggest-in-class display, the impressive battery life and the very small bezels (phone fits in my front jeans pocket !), combined with the killer 'Knock On' feature make this phone an easy choice over any other phone right now, hardware-wise. Not to mention the newest Snapdragon 800 processor. I am even pleased by its camera capability, pictures always look very sharp because of the optical stabilization, although there is too much noise reduction and loss of detail (however resized for web/facebook, pictures look great). The fact that it has an FM radio is a huge plus for me, because I needed a radio to listen to my favorite talk show between the parking lot and my home, and it's proven to do its job great so far
The LG G2 software
Believe me when I say this, the stock Android is extremely boring compared to LGs software. It's so refreshing to see many user-needed features included in their software. I don't care for most of them, but they don't get in the way either. However, some of them are really useful and I never see Google implementing them in their stock Android. For example, I can now set different ringtone volumes for notifications and calls, I can access the phone files from my computer over my home network, I have a very customizable battery saver that kicks in when needed, etc.
There is only one thing that bothers my in LG G2's software: the notification drawer has some items that you can never remove from there, like the screen brightness, ringtone volume and a row with some shortcuts. It's not unbearable, but I prefer that to only be used for notifications. At least they could move their bloatware controls *after* all the notifications instead of before them.
Conclusion
I really like the LG G2. I think it trumps every other phone at this moment, but this is not the important thing. The important thing is that I don't have to charge my phone every day (it sometimes lasts 3+ days !), it has a great screen for web reading and browsing and it's just a well-designed phone.
Good review, vanilla android was a performance necessity when phones weren't power houses. I too enjoy the gadgetry of mfg skins. I still like stock android for my tablet, but for my primary device, I like the bells and whistles.

The megapixel count really doesn't matter, if you take a picture with an old 5 Megapixel Canon DSLR you will blow any smartphone out if the water. The pixel size / sensor size and lens quality does matter a lot.
The LG G2 camera is quite surprisingly good for a smartphone camera with a 1/3 inch sensor. The lens seems very good. But the resulting image is heavily post-processed to eliminate noise due to small pixel phtosites. Unfortunately fine detail is gone as well, but this is only visible on full-size images. Basically the camera software is optimized for instant picture sharing with little to no user post-processing, which is a correct thing to do in a smartphone.
I for one would prefer a noisier but more detailed image which I could post-process with a dedicated suite like Adobe's Lightroom. But I guess this is what big cameras are for...
Thanks for this review. I like it
Nexus 5 = Crap
This are the technical characteristics of the upcoming Nexuseless 5, I prefer LG G2 ever.

I cant make my mind up about the LG g2 or the nexus 5 the nexus 5 looks nicer but the G2 has better specs.
G2 in my opinion looks so sexy and honestly that's one of the many reasons I bought it. Its different with the home button setup on the back and has the specs to last a long time for me. Also running stock and with 5 hour screen time I'm way over 24 hours of use

Looks is Subjective, IMO Nexus 5 just has two advantages over G2, Price and Timely Updates. That is it.
My views are that personally the phone is just a little to big for me to use comfortably. I would have preferred say 5" screen with the narrow bezzels making the device slightly narrower and easier to hold - but thats just a personal preference. I would have also liked a textued back to the phone (at the moment i am using a skin to give it texture) as this phone is on the maximum edge of what is comfortable to me i dont want to add to the size with a case, i also dont want to lose the look ad feel i have from the device (the 'in the hand feel') you get.
All in all however these were not a deal breaker for me as there was nothing else out for me to consider at the time (like the moto x but not available in uk) so bought the g2 sim free.
After a couple of weeks of use i started to dislike elements of the lg software and its design and just found that adding a launcher just gave me other issues. What is great now is that the dev community is really picking up for this phone and roms are starting to appear so you now have the option to pretty much have whatever you want on your phone. You can go pretty much bare bones android without any of Lg's bloat but you an also add whatever elements of Lgs stuff you like to the vanilla rom so giving you the best of both worlds.
So to sum up.....for me the device has awesome specs, latest processor, excellent camera, amazing battery life, great development options to customize to your personal liking. Only thing for me is the size but maybe thats just because i have short stubby fingers
At the end of the day its all about choices, beauty is that now you have choices so if the hardware tickles your fancy you can customize till your hearts content and end up with your perfect device

what kind of issues did you encounter when adding a launcher? and what launcher?
I appreciate everyone's reviews here!

You name it i tried it!
Nova, smart launcher, Aviate, Adw.....
To be fair to these launchers though they probably were not really issue's. Just little things that frustrated me about them, could have been the inability to do something or set something up with them, notifications, different custom options etc.
Most people would probably not even have experienced it or have issue with it.
The thing i was leading to really was the fact that now with a good dev community coming on board with this device (been quite overlooked generally in my opinion until now - availabilty in some countries may have been the reason for this though) that there are many choices for people now.
If the hardware of the device fits the bill then you are no longer tied with elements of the stock build you dont like and pretty much change every bit about it one way or another - just means taking that step of rooting and flashing. Dont get me wrong im no developer or expert in this field but as someone who is particularly fussy and difficult to please with phones and software etc (must be my ocd) everyone has options and its really not that difficult once you have done it a few times.
Bottom line is if someone dosent like the stock ui/experience you can change and have whatever you want
I know my comments above may seem obvious to many especially as we are on a developer site however a lot of people come to the site for opinions and information and who may have thought about making changes but never actually taking the final steps. I did and now i have changed the things that frustrated me without the need to just change the device again! Like i said i am major ocd and fussy about phones but it does at least give a little more longevity to the device if these options are here.
Hope this makes sense lol
ps - sorry didnt mean to hijack or step on the thread.
Thanks :good:

The 5.2" G2 isn't that much bigger then the Galaxy Nexus 4.65". It is thinner but taller/wider by a few millimeters. Not much difference.

Hi Guys,
Conclusion
I really like the LG G2. I think it trumps every other phone at this moment, but this is not the important thing. The important thing is that I don't have to charge my phone every day (it sometimes lasts 3+ days !), it has a great screen for web reading and browsing and it's just a well-designed phone.

welcome to the club! (happy owners of G2)

Should i get the g2

So i have an htc dna right now. I love the phone itself but not a fan of the aosp bugs. We have great devs but htc does some big locking down. Does lg do the same? Are there any phone related bugs on cm? Is dev support strong? And overall do you think i should get this the g2 or wait?
Id be getting the Verizon version. I checked the dev threads and all my favorite rons are official so that's no problem

If you can afford it, then by all means: yes.
The main issues with AOSP, in my opinion, were the lack of IR Blaster and Stock LG camera. Now, both those apps have been ported, making the phone really useable and great.
No one needs to be told why the Nexus 5 is great, so let's take that as a base for the G2, then add on:
-Wonderful camera!
-Incredible battery life!!
-Buzzword screen!!!
(Okay, I'm having too much fun)
-Minuscule bezels
-Interesting hardware key setup
-Double tap to wake
The Nexus 5 is still a mighty fine device, but if you can afford the G2 and enjoy the back buttons + larger size, then it's a great choice.
Ultimately, play with it in store and see if you like it more than the Nexus 5. As for AOSP support, it's good enough to be a daily driver, but will never be as stable as on the Nexus series, so if it's up to software, you should adjust your choice accordingly.

This and their stock ROM isn't bad either
I came from the DNA as well, and I'm a big HTC fan. The upgrade to the G2 isn't huge but if you're like me you'll be blown away by the battery life, the knock knock feature, and a really responsive stock ROM. I have no regrets at all and am really enjoying this phone.
As always, YMMV.

Im actually so torn on this also. Im prob gonna hop off verizon on WED to get ether the Nexus 5 or G2. I have a galaxy nexus and love roming.
Im so sick of bad battery life. having like 1 1/2 hours of screen on time sucks so bad.
im a flash freak though. and the G2 on tmobile doesn't see to have a bunch of DEVs for it
I love nexus devices but the battery in it scares me. I also love vanilla feel of android. but doesnt seem like many devs are working on vanilla roms for the G2. ugh what to do
I also know roms and kernels help battery life. so maybe the nexus 5 battery can get better?
It came down to what you set as important. If you want a great camera, battery, features, and screen (not the most color accurate, but wow the screen is amazing nonetheless!) then go for the G2. But if you love playing around with many different roms, kernels, and want a big development, and dont care too much about battery, and camera..well, then just go for nexus 5.
Take in mind that some g2's have screen issues..

I just dont like all the bloatware. If i could get vanilla 4.4 on the G2 id be so down. but i dont think you can.
LG G2 is in the moment the best Smartphone.I have sold my Note 2 for the LG G2 Monster!
This phone is amazing. I was a little apprehensive returning to LG after being somewhat disappointed with their devices/support years ago. I always research like crazy before I buy something, I probably watched every G2 video review and comparison video I could find. I paid close to full retail to keep my unlimited data on Verizon and I don't regret it one bit.
Some of the video reviews had me feeling really uncertain about how messy LG's UI would turn out. In some strange way that I can't explain, a lot of the videos did make it look like a cheap and overdone skin that LG slapped on top of Android, but owning the phone for a few weeks now, I find absolutely nothing annoying or disappointing about their UI. I'd been using AOSP ROMs on my Bionic and I never thought I would like anything non-stock-Google again. There is nothing wrong with the LG UI. I love it.
I have never felt less of an urge to install a custom ROM. To answer your question, the dev support does seem pretty strong, much better than I thought it might be initially. It didn't seem like too many big names were excited to start supporting the G2, but go look in the Verizon development forum, there is a ton. I bought my phone lightly used and didn't even realize at first that the person had already installed Clean ROM which is just a de-bloated version of stock with not much else added to it. So I can't say that I've ever used the fully stock LG ROM, but Clean ROM is as close as it gets, and I have yet to really find enough reason to try flashing Carbon ROM or Malladus for their added features, although I am checking the dev forum every day just to see what's going on. But this stock ROM is not missing any functionality that I need. I'm really not sure when I'm going to get around to even trying a fully custom ROM.
I'm actually very surprised, and kind of eating my words, when it comes to the fact that nobody has managed a 4.4 ROM yet. I kept telling everyone who was going to leave Verizon just for the Nexus 5 that surely the G2 would get 4.4 ROMs figured out almost immediately because of how similar the device is. I don't understand how so many other unrelated devices have started to see 4.4 ROMs meanwhile a carbon copy LG branded Snapdragon 800 phone still doesn't have one. Yet, again, this really doesn't matter. Aside from the general desire to always have the newest version of Android, I don't really find myself caring that I don't have 4.4 yet. And the rumors going around say that we might actually get an official update before the end of this year, which is really surprising, because I knew going in that it was going to be a calculated risk choosing to own an LG device again and possibly NEVER seeing any official updates based on their prior reputation for not supporting devices. I guess I had it backwards, I doubted LG and thought the devs would get 4.4 ported within a few weeks, but at this rate it's looking like we might get official 4.4 before anything else. (None of what I said here is meant to be a jab at the dev community, I literally have no understanding of what it would take to get 4.4 working on the G2 or why we don't have it yet - but I'm not saying it in a negative way, just surprised that I was wrong about how quick we would get 4.4 ROMs).
The battery is great yet sometimes I am surprised how quickly I can drain it. Basically it kicks butt at standby time. If you have a busy couple of days where you aren't using the phone much, it'll be alive and kicking 40+ hours later and still not totally dead. But I guess because of the beautiful display the powerful internals, if you have a day where you're really using it a lot, you can still kill it in 10 hours.
The camera is a mixed bag. People have cooked up improved camera files that you can flash but I have yet to try it yet, so my opinions are based totally on the stock camera. The low light capability is amazing compared to my last phone, it's actually possible to get a decent picture in a dimly lit interior room, BUT when you zoom in on it, the post-processing does some weird stuff to the photo to make it clear enough to see while trying to keep noise levels down, so upon close inspections the pictures almost end up looking like blotchy paintings instead of true-to-live. The pictures look GREAT on the 5 inch screen if you plan to just view them on there, but if you were to actually want to take a 10mp picture from your phone (10mp is the largest resolution that gives you 16:9 widescreen pics, full 13mp is more square) and try to use it as a desktop wallpaper or view the photo on the TV, it's not going to look great. So the G2 hasn't totally convinced me to sell my full size Sony camera yet. But for a phone camera, it really is great, and compared to my Bionic, there are countless low-light or other situations where the G2 can still grab me a decent image whereas with my old phone I was used to sometimes wanting a picture of something and simply having to accept that I wasn't going to be able to get one. If you let the G2 use the flash in low light then the blotchy post-processing is not an issue and the picture will look great, but in a lot of cases I at least personally try not to use flash and want to get images in their original natural lighting. So you can choose true low light and accept the less than perfect quality, or turn on the flash (super bright and useful compared to the lame flash on other phones I've had) and get a clear picture.
I wondered as I researched the G2 if I should take the full plunge and get something even larger like the Note 3 - so glad I didn't. I have fairly large hands but the top corner of the G2 is already getting to the point where you feel like you might drop the phone while you're reaching your thumb across. LG was right in saying they felt 5.2in was the largest practical size unless you want to have to 2-hand your phone all day long.
In fairness I should mention my phone came with an Incipio Dual Pro case that I have kept on since day 1, so I don't have a lot of direct experience handling the phone by itself or dealing with the fingerprint-magnet texture. I would never want to use such a great phone without a case to protect it from a fall anyway. The Incipio dual pro is the best case I have ever had on a device. This goes for the rear buttons as well, it probably is true that if using the phone without a case, the Verizon button design would probably be very hard to distinguish which button you're about to press without looking at it. The Dual Pro case covers the buttons with its own raised section of rubber making it very easy to tell which button you're about to press by touch alone.
The screen is beautiful if not a shade too warm color wise compared to what I am used to. For a few days I installed a screen adjuster app to kick down the slightly warm tint of the colors and make it a colder-bluish hue, but this may just be personal preference, and the screen is not "off" enough to really be an issue, so much so that I generally haven't bothered to turn on the screen adjuster app most days if I happen to notice that it isn't currently running. When I used to own a Nexus 7 I thought the colors seemed warm too, so it may just be that the Bionic I used for the past two years had a colder color tint to it so now I'm biased to thinking every other screen has whites that are too yellowish.
Knock on/off is a great feature but I'd be totally fine having to use the buttons all day if I had to. Again the Incipio case really makes the rear buttons fun to use.
Alright I've ranted enough. I was worried that maybe I too would be disappointed that I didn't leave Verizon and get the Nexus 5, but not true at all. Just yesterday on Twitter someone posted a G2 and an N5 side by side and I thought the G2 looked so much better and you do notice the slightly increase screen real estate.
Also - using LMT pie controls so that way the ugly nav bar doesn't always have to be taking up space at the bottom of the screen is AWESOME. Sometimes using Apex launcher I even hide the top status bar as well so I can just have a 5.2 inch screen of beautiful wallpaper and nothing else. I don't even keep app icons on my home screen, I have the top 5 apps that I use programmed into Pie controls along with the home-back-search-recents navigation controls.
My phone search began with wanting an HTC One, as well as considering the Droid Maxx, Note 3, Galaxy S4, Nexus 5, or waiting until next year to see if Android is going to go 64-bit to keep up with the iPhone. I have zero regrets with getting the G2, it is so beautiful and fun to use. There's always room for personal opinions and likes/dislikes so your experience may vary, but I would say if you like what you've seen of the G2 so far, you'll have no reason not to be happy getting it.
I'm not really sure why so many people bash the camera, I find the camera included in CM to be great. I just wish it had a 13MP option, but nonetheless here's a sample photo I took using the CM camera:

P.S. this is my first phone where I too don't feel any need to flash a custom ROM. Works superbly out of the box.
Thank you glassforest. I have been on the fence w the g2 and n5. I love flashing but the batt, screen and compliments are pulling me to the g2. I see u can root the g2 which is great. On on the gnex now and my thoughts on any device is as long as batt, screen , speed , speaker and customization are better than the gnex I'm good. I know there may not be as much dev work like the gnex but.... Does anyone know if the speaker is better than the gnex? And between the att and Verizon variant is there any system or software differences? I know the back buttons are different but not sure to stay on vzw or go to att

I love almost everything about G2. Though i'm not used to this big size of screen. Especially when writing, it's hard to do with one hand for me. If you want to use a lot with one hand i would get a 4.7 or 5 inch screen. Although with two hands the G2 is great. It feels more like a phablet than a phone at this moment. But i only just got it, maybe just have to get used. Soo, mixed feelings about the size, somebody say something good about the size soo i can sleep well
ABSOLUTLEY if you are tired of flashing and dealing with painful custom roms.
this phone works how ever you want it to work. it is perfect in terms, of usability, usefulness of features and beauty.
I don't get why cm 11 is not present in lg g2. It is the only thing stepping me off buying it.

I'm not sick of flashing at all. I do want better features though .,.faster, better cam and such. I know the n5 is all that bit the batt and screen size...mmmmmm. I am just up in the air ...one day n5 the next g2... I will say I played w the g2 at the store and the screen size for me is the perfect size. I have good size hands so I don't see the size being a problem.
Oh forgot...since BL is locked I'm guessing no kernels to tweak colors, uc/oc, UV/ov...ect

The good thing about newer Android is that you can DISABLE apps in the SYSTEM>APPS page without even needing root.

We'll get 4.4 as soon as the devs figure it out. We'll probably see AOKP 4.4 first since most of the guys there have (Verizon) G2s. Also with the N5 being our little cousin, you know we'll get CM11 also. There still are lots of bugs with custom 4.4 roms which is why most devs are starting their builds from scratch and causing delays.
The current devices that have 4.4 or CM11 are barely running it. There are lots of bugs and issues still. And you'll notice that it's the older hardware that the devs are more familiar with that are getting ports. The Nexus 5 doesn't even have official support for CM11 yet. All just unofficial kangs. Once CM11 gets to a point where they can start supporting some devices, then we'll get some love. There is nothing stopping anyone from doing their own CM11 G2 ports.
Ewww, use 13MP and crop yourself. That "4:3" has all the info of the 10MP "16:9" plus more. Agreed its a mixed bag.
I tend to disagree on cm 11. Considering that gnex should be obsolete for Google by now, this phone is running cm 11 pretty well even though it has an incompatible kernel. But there is nothing here. Is it because of drivers that are not open?

Stay with the g2 or jump on the n5

Let me start this off with these are just swine thoughts I have been thinking. I like the g2 (AT&T IS WHAT I HAVE). Big BATTERY, big screen, phone feels good in the hand, ect. I had previously been on the fence of the g2 and the n5. Seeing 4.4.1 was just dropped and from the n5 thread there are gobs and gobs of roms and kernels and mods. Coming from a gnex I knew the g2 didn't have the dev attention like nexus devices. I see lg roms that are modded, custom roms such as vanir, pacrom and such...I've only had the g2 less than 15 days and all in all I like it. I just miss the flashing and testing. My g2 is rooted, exposed w g2, camera mod, dpi dropped and such.
Am I just having withdrawals and I actually have a better phone than the n5? Probably..
My one question.. when 4.4 officially drops on the g2 would there be more devs (roms and kernels) that jump on the g2 or will it b somewhat scarce like it is now. Again I like the g2 but not sure I made the right decision.

The Nexus 5 is a "Chumps" G2. its "half" the phone.
The G2 Development scene is on fire and will only get better and better.
My opinion, as someone who owns the G2 now (for the second time) and someone who's owned the N5 (and probably still would if it didn't have a mic issue that I returned it for)...
...if you like tinkering, ROMing, modding, and generally messing with your phone, then the N5 is the way to go. While I did return mine, I'll probably pick up another one at some point if only so I'll have an "unbrickable" phone to play around with.
My G2 is rooted as well and I'm running stock with Xposed and G2 Xposed installed, an ad blocker, and that's pretty much it. The G2 is the superior phone when it comes to battery life (by far) and the camera. The N5 is the superior phone if you like tinkering and you want a phone that's got tons of developer support.
I will say this...while I love both these phones, neither works as well FOR ME as my Moto X. I know, I know...why am I posting that here? I'm just giving my own personal account. I've loved my carrier edition 16gb Moto X so much that I decided to grab a 32gb MotoMaker X during the Cyber Monday (on Wednesday) deal. That's how good it is.
I'm sure at some point I'll sell the G2 and probably use the funds to grab another N5. While I don't like tinkering as much as I used to, I do still have that bug every once in a while, so having one around would be nice.

The Nexus 5 is a "Chumps" G2. its "half" the phone.
The G2 Development scene is on fire and will only get better and better.

That is what I hope. I hope the scene will grow. Coming from I Toro gnex the dev scene wasn't as big as Maguro but you still had stuff to chose from. The battery is amazing. Playing games on the gnex with less than 50% I would usually need the charger plugged in as the battery would be hit pretty hard. With the g2 at 35 % I don't need the charger. Really my only gripe is all the white. White settings, sms, notifications. Is there an exposed or something where we can theme like theme chooser? I can always sell a year down the road. Just needed to see if I was being rash and unrealistic on the greatness of the n5.

I'm actually trading my N5 for a G2 today lol. Better battery and camera and still aosp Roms like cm or slim

Sure, no problem.
I'll say up front it's hard to explain. I was one of those people that wasn't wowed by the Moto X when it was introduced, because of the seemingly "sub par" specs. How in the world could this phone compete with the other flagships that I'd had over the past couple of years (S2, S3, S4, Note 2, LGOG, G2, Nexus 5, iPhone 5S)? All I can say is, it does. At least for me.
It wasn't until I actually went to my closest AT&T store and put one in my hand that I fell head over heels for it. The in-the-hand feeling is like nothing I've experienced with any Android phone I've owned. It's solid, got a great weight to it, and feels very premium. But it also FLIES. No hint of stutter or lag at all.
Of course, it helps if you're a person that really likes a stock Android experience. If you like all the bells and whistles of TouchWiz or LG's skin or Sense, then stock Android might seem bland to you. But I love stock, and the Moto X is stock on steroids because of the few unique things Motorola threw in that you don't think you'll use until you actually own the phone. Active Display (notifications), Assist, Motorola Connect, and Touchless Controls make it an experience unlike any other phone. I was never one to talk to my phone, but Touchless Controls is something I use 10-20 times a day and it just keeps getting better since it's now hosted in the Play Store and doesn't need a full firmware upgrade to upgrade itself.
And Active Display (notifications) have RUINED every other phone for me. To be able to glance at your phone, not touch it, and know if you've got a notification is awesome. Sure, you can do the same thing with the LED light on the G2 or any of the Samsung phones, but it's not the same. Again, it's just something you have to experience in order to get it.
A couple of other things...the camera wasn't great at first, but that camera update fixed it unbelievably. It's SO much better now. It's not G2 or 5S great yet, but it's not far behind. Another thing I love in a great phone is the speaker. Not for music, but for when I'm in the car and don't have my headset, so I can talk hands free. The speaker on the Moto X is WAY better than the speaker on the G2 (which is soft and distorts badly when you turn it all the way up). The X speaker can get loud, but doesn't distort...ever.
I highly recommend the Moto X to everyone that asks. It's simply the best Android phone I've ever used and has me excited to see where Motorola goes from here. They're off to a great start under Google tutelage.

Wow, thx for the really informative perspective. I've got one thing I wanna ask you that really concerns me the most, it's about the display size and resolution. Having first used the note 2 for a year and adjusting really well to the g2's screen size, which I think is the perfect size balance, how does it feel to use the moto? Does the smaller screen size bother u or is it better in your opinion?

You're welcome. Glad I could help!
No doubt coming back down to the 4.7" screen on the X will take some time to adjust to, even from the G2. It took me a few days as the last phones I was using before getting my Moto X were the Note 2 and S4. But, the screen is actually very underrated, in my opinion. It gets pretty bright (I tend to keep mine set around 25% unless I'm in direct sunlight in which case I'll bump it up to 50-75% as needed). It's also got a lot warmer color than the G2 (because it's AMOLED compared to the LCD on the G2), but LG is known for it's very blue tint on it's screens. Brightness-wise, I prefer the AMOLED as I think it's easier on the eyes. I get a lot of eye strain from the very bright, very blue G2 screen. That's something I don't get on the X's screen.
Another thing about the screens...the viewing angles on the X are GREAT. You can nearly turn it sideways and still read the screen. The G2, in my opinion, is awful, maybe as bad as some of the Sony phones (which are known for their terrible viewing angles).
As far as the comparison between 720p on the X and 1080p on the G2, yes, there's a difference. But it's not THAT noticeable and the battery savings are worth it on a phone as one-hand friendly as the X. I realize the battery savings don't mean a lot when you're comparing it to the G2 since the G2 has that huge battery, but if you want something that's not huge yet still want amazing battery life, the X will do nicely.
One preference I have is I like the front of my phones to be black (or dark blue in the case of the S3). I've always thought white fronts on phones wash out the display, no matter how good it is. That's just a preference of mine, though.

Again, you're welcome. I don't want to make it sound like I dislike the G2 at all. It's a fantastic device. But for me, the Moto X just works better. Obviously it's all subjective to each user, but you wanted an opinion...LOL. Sorry for being a bit long-winded!

Yeah, sure it is subjective, but it is very interesting how specs on paper are seemingly becoming less and less important compared to real innovation, customization and originality. I am here thinking of the Touchless Control and Active display etc on the Moto X

Thx again, makes me want to go out to a brick mortar like best buy and try playing with their display model before deciding what to do with that coupon deal. I've read and watched quite alot about the moto, but haven't had the chance to actually see one in person yet. I'll try to do that this weekend.

We're definitely entering a good time in the mobile industry, one where specs don't matter nearly as much as optimization. It's what set the iPhone apart from other OS's for so long, but Apple had a distinct advantage because it controlled both software and hardware. Now Google/Motorola have each other, so they can start down that path to optimization (and I think the first very large step down that path is the Moto X). I'd all but written off Motorola phones after the Atrix HD that I'd had, but the X has me extremely excited to see what else is coming down the pipeline from Motorola/Google. :good:

Truth! Optimization is a very important factor in the user experience. I remember buying the iPhone 3GS back in the day instead of an Android phone purely because of the smoothness of the OS due to the great optimization
I'm going to add that although I thought the moto x looked amazing, I have previously owned the Motorola photon. When I first bought the phone I loved it, then Motorola stepped in and canceled all firmware updates for the phone, although they made a press release saying they would continue support which they later went back on. I'll never get a Motorola phone for this reason and this reason alone. How pathetic of a company.

I had a N5 for a week then dropped it for the g2. If you want more roms than you can shake a stick at then the N5 is for you. If you want nice hardware, useable battery (imho N5 just isn't useable as a modern smartphone due to battery) then get G2. The screen and lack of bezel on the G2 is stunning. Id say the G2 is a grown up N5. Fyi, I had an N4 since November last year til the moment the N5 came out and after a few days decided that it was no upgrade.
