Review - 4500mAh Power Case (External Battery Case) - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Thought I'd review one of the cheaper battery cases you might find on your local eBay or on DealExtreme or other similar Chinese/HK e-tailers for about £20-25. I got mine off eBay and it arrived well packed in its own plastic box;

Only a battery and manual in the box.
Provided manual (Chinese language on other side not photographed)
It has a velvet like backing to help avoid scratching up the back of your phone and uses the magnetic side ports to charge phone. Micro USB charging port is on the bottom.
Camera cutout is in the right place but the plastic is a little cheap, as the light leaking through the body of the case demonstrates. You can sort of see the internals at the right angle.
Doesn't block any buttons or the headphone jack and lower eyelet but covers up the sim/microSD slot which is fine as they are not frequently accessed.
On the downside, it makes it difficult to open the battery charging port on the phone because the little notch to open the door is underneath, and blocked by the case.
For me, the charging notch sits in the gap between my thumb and the phone when I hold the phone as I usually do, so I think it actually helps me grip better.
Despite the flimsy looking leg, it is actually quite stable and doesn't tip as easily as some similar cases I've had for other phones.
And finally, the battery tests, it seems to give me about an 80% charge on two different runs and takes about 2.5 hours to empty. Battery logs below.
Second run;
Conclusion,
It doesn't deliver as much charge is I'd hoped but can nearly double your battery life. The cost is a similar doubling of the overall thickness, but the curved back makes it more comfortable to hold. It also gives me peace of mind that I won't scratch the glass rear. On the downside, the plastic quality is poor and attracts smudges easily but I won't expect the thing to fall apart in your hands.
So if the price is right for you, it seems to work as it should and will easily extend your battery life.

The power case.. or any case for that matter isn't something I'm interested in...
But you've done a great job with this thread. Detailed look at the unit with imagges, and discussed every major point. Nice work!

Hi where did you buy this case?

Thank you for the kind words Hamdogg.
Impetus, I bought mine from here; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261298963835. There are many places which seem to sell a similar product so I may go with whoever can ship it to you quickest or cheapest.

Problem: Keeping a grip on the phone. Solution: Paint the case.

I wasn't sure where to put this, but since it involves a case, I figured the Accessories forum was a safe bet. Like most folks who pre-ordered from Sprint, I received a free case as a little thank you for being patient....even though I wasn't. After a few weeks, my only complaint is that the case is very slick and I've had a couple of close calls when trying to get it out of my pocket and answer a call while in a hurry. I remember seeing someone mention a product called PlastiDip, which is a spray-on coating designed to add texture and some degree of weather protection. I found a can at the local hardware store, slapped some masking tape on the edges of the free case and this is the result.
Here it is with just the tape.

This is after 4 medium coats of PlastiDip with 30 minutes between coats.
And here it is after scoring along the tape with a razor blade and then removing the tape.
I'm not sure how long it will hold up, but it really added a nice grippable feel to the case. Don't look too close or you'll see that I didn't apply the tape parallel to the edge of the case. I also didn't do a really good job of scoring along the edge of the tape. However, the case was free and the spray was only around $6 so I don't have a whole lot invested. If anyone else has similar problems holding on to their phone, this might be an option to consider.
For reference, this is the stuff.
Nice work, thanks for sharing it!
Just a fyi the oils from fingers will start to peal the edges off. Good idea though
Dude plasti dip is the ****! I've done various car trim items in that stuff, it's incredible. Excellent idea, I'll try this if I get a case.
wow great idea, i got a few cans sitting at home
How about using grip tape? I always have leftovers from my skateboard decks.
About Plasti-Dip, spray from a further distance for more "grit". The closer you spray the smoother it'll look.
What about maybe painting with RTV? It seems like that might be cheaper as well as more durable.
My issue would be peeling over time, though it's so simple you might as well just keep reapplying it, nothing will beat it in terms of grip.
Pine tar....

Out of curiosity... How long did this hold up? I sprayed my nexus s 4g awhile back and it lasted a little more than a month. I am wondering if others had better success. I probably didn't do the best job.

Anyone used the Nillkin case?

There are several sellers on ebay pushing them. I'm just curious how they fit and how thin they are.

This one looks nice, quite tempted to try one out

I too am curious about these cases. I also stumbled upon these on Ebay and tend to like them quite a bit more than the Nillkin (at least cosmetically) and they look to be a little thinner as well...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330839147407?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I've been using the black Nillkin case for a little over a week and I love it. It's very thin -- it hangs over the top and bottom of the phone a very little bit. The case won't protect the screen at all, as the ridges on the side do not seem to raise past the screen's height.
The only downfall is the fit isn't 100% accurate -- the the buttons don't line up exactly with the holes in the case. This doesn't cause any issues because they aren't being pressed down. The worst is the camera button's alignment. I'll try to take some pics when I get off of work.
Overall, I would definitely recommend if you're looking for an non-intrusive, cheap but nice looking & feeling, scratch-protector case. Do NOT buy it if you're in the market for drop protection.
p.s. The black looks great with a white nokia. The white shows through on open bottom, top, and around the camera area in the back.
ALSO, works perfectly with the wireless charger.

i actually bought the gray version of that case off amazon, it came in yesterday and i'm quite happy with it. it provides a LOT more grip when holding and adds virtually no bulk. well placed cutouts for the camera and side buttons as well.
wireless charging works through the case too. overall very happy with my $8 purchase.

The Cheapest (in more ways than one), functional Qi desktop stand

A while back I got one of these really cheap desktop phone stands given to me. It's actually very sturdy, but I didn't have much use for it, so it went into a box of misc. stuff in the closet.

More recently I picked up an inexpensive wireless charging puck that works quite well
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F6SPZWO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
So I wondered if I could stick the puck to the back of the stand, and make a poor man's Tylt Vu charging stand. Sadly, the answer was no. The thickness of the plexiglass stand, added to the case for the charging puck, was too great for the Qi coils to bridge. But, I thought, what if I remove the thickness of the puck's case, and put the charging coil directly on the back of the plexi stand? So I disassembled the puck, and low and behold, that worked just fine.
Not wanting to give up the puck, I decided to order another. Being cheap, I saw a bunch of similar looking circular pucks for an even lower price, and thought they're probably the same thing. So I ordered one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/MuchBuy-Wirel...638&sr=1-11&keywords=docooler+qi+charging+pad
.

.
Well, it's not the same. It's definitely cheaper than the PowerBot, but it worked fine, so I took it apart. Combined with the freebie stand, I bring you..... FrankenCharger. Ugly as sin, but it works, and a total outlay of about $10 can't be beat. Similar looking pucks are available from ebay for $3 to $4 bucks.
The bumpers that the phone rests on are soft plastic, and are extras from kitchen cabinets, intended to keep the cabinet doors from slamming closed. I may try to figure out a better way to hold it together than electrical tape, but there's something honestly cheap about that solution that appeals to me.
Here's a shot of the back, and sitting next to my work PC. I may stick some thin cork dots, or something similar, on the bottom to keep it from sliding around, but where it's located it's atually pretty stable.
nice i did something similar, but i also use a laser cut, its good to have one

Leather Case for the S7

Hello guys,
I’ve been a reader of this site / forum for a long time, and as I’ve gotten lots of information I’ll contribute something now, too.
Since about 2 months I own the Galaxy S7. Although the phone’s design and „feel“ is great, I’ve always wanted some kind of protection for my phones, and it’s no different with the S7. As I’ve had excellent experience with „Noreve“, a company from Saint-Tropez / France, I ordered one of their cases this time as well.
If you take a look at their website you’ll find a huge variety of different cases for (nearly) every smartphone. And the great thing is, that you can really personalize the cases, as there are lots of different types of leather you can choose from.
I decided to go with the „Horizontal wallet flap“ style, I’ve had this kind of case before and really liked it. As the case is handmade it took some time till I received it, but quality takes its time ...
After opening the package, first thing you see is a black & red box with the NOREVE logo and lettering.

Opening this box, you still can’t see the product, but a nice red soft pouch that „protects“ the case.
After unwrapping the pouch, you finally can see what you waited for: the case.
I chose the colour „Indigo“ from the „Ambition Couture“ line of leathers.
The S7 fits perfectly, inserting it the first time the case is pretty tight, but it „loosens“ / adapts after a few days.
The case got a cutout on the back fort he camera as well as the flashlight. When it’s closed you can still reach the on/off button on the right, and when flipping it open you got cutouts on the left fort he volume up / down buttons. The clasp is fixed with a magnet and holds the case closed very well.
The front, well better to say the leather on the front, is soft and feels very nice, whilst the back is pretty stable and (should) protect the phone well in case it’ll fall down on the floor etc.
After using the case nor for about two weeks I can say it’s been the right decission to go with the Noreve case again. Even after some pretty harsh treatment and a few bumps there are no signs of weardown or similar, it’s still nice and pretty.
Although the price is higher than for other cases, what you get is superb quality and a case that’s going to be with you and your S7 for a long time ...
Maybe I helped some of you that are in search of a case for the S7, if you got any questions don’t hesitate to write some comments and just ask
I wish you all a nice day,
with best regards from Germany

Moto 360 sport install lugs

I've had my 360 sport for a couple of years now and the band started to break. I fixed it with silicone but it only lasted about two weeks before breaking again. I decided to look for replacements but could not find any satisfactory way of replacing the bands. Since the watch was old and pretty unusable with the wristband broken I decided to try my own method and not be to careful about it...
I cut the bands and glued on lugs that were originally for a Samsung gear S3 (bought from Ali Express for ~$2) onto the watch. It actually worked great and now I can use whatever 22mm straps I want to! Here follows a more detailed description of what I did.
Materials used:
Razor blade, two-part epoxy glue, replacement lugs, replacement bands, small screwdriver (to remove excess parts from the lugs).
Price for entire replacement, lugs, epoxy and new wristband, was about 100 Swedish krona which is about $11.5 at the time of writing.

Power of the watch
Cut the watchbands close to the watch body
Using the lugs for measurement, cut the watchbands as close as you need to the watch body. (Warning: I carved so close that I carved into some metal, I'm not sure what it is for but my watch works so I gathered ether it was unimportant or I didn't cut deep enough to actually damage anything.)
Ad a bit of epoxy on the lugs and attach them in the correct position on the watch body, I used some tape to secure them while the epoxy dried.
After the first dab of epoxy dried (~10 minutes) I went back and added plenty of epoxy to the gap between the lugs and the watch body. I did this both to secure it more tightly and also to make sure the watch was still waterproof (or at least as waterproof as I could get it).
As my watch was an unattractive orange I used a permanent marker to paint it black with ok results...
Then I was done! The procedure was relatively simple and took about an hour maybe. I would say that the result looks good if your not closer then approximately one foot... The alternative is of course to 3D print a shell for the watch body but I found that ugly and I did not want to make it even more bulky. Overall I think this is a better way of replacing a broken strap. Thus I conclude with some final pictures, good luck to anyone trying!
This is actually awesome, thanks for posting. I can't seem to find those replacement lugs though. Any chance you still have a link?

Hi!
I used these lugs: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2Pcs-Stainless-Steel-Watch-Band-Connector-Adapter-20mm-For-Samsung-Gear-S2-RM-720/32882034607.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.75.7fa5590aX95YmZ&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_5_10065_10068_319_10059_10884_317_10887_10696_321_322_453_10084_454_10083_10103_10618_10307_10820_10301_10821_10303_537_536_10902,searchweb201603_55,ppcSwitch_0&algo_expid=913f528c-c516-43a9-835e-ffc649f36426-10&algo_pvid=913f528c-c516-43a9-835e-ffc649f36426&transAbTest=ae803_4
A word of warning though. My battery life is worse now, the watch usually dies when battery hits 30%, not sure if the lug installment caused this but it might have... If i would do it again I would not cut as deep but rather fill in the gaps between lugs and watch with epoxy.
Hope it works out for you!
//Rasmus
I cut nothing, just install lugs adapter.
I have to remove back ring also, so rubber case will fit.
