OTG cable like this will work? - Galaxy Note 3 Accessories

Would that kind of cable work? The OTG cable I have for my tablet is just a mini USB (not micro!) to USB female, and it works fine. Would that kind of OTG cable work? So I can connect stuff like drives and keyboards.
Thanks!

From the picture it suggest to be a USB 3.0 connector to a USB 2 Connector, since USB 3.0 normally are all blue inside. It schould at least support USB 2 OTG if the USB A connector is missing the additional pins for USB 3 support as the color suggests.
FYI: To my knowledge OTG has the 5 th pin, not found in USB A and B and only are present in mini- and mircro- USB 2.0 connectors connected to ground to identify it as OTG. Thats all the difference to a normal USB mini./micro-cable. When I modified the connector from a mini-USB by connecting the 5th pin to ground and connected it to my Nexus 7 vie a mini- to micro-USB adpapter it didn't work because the adapter connect only the 4 standard pins, also found in USB A and B, through.

That's a USB 3.0 one. It looks like it has 5 pins on the USB part, but yeah.. I really don't know.
So what was the conclusion? That it only works with 5-pin OTG cables? And do you possible know if any of those I linked are 5-pins?

A mini USB 2.0 or 3.0 OTG will work. I have both and they both work fine.

Since it is advertised as USB 2.0 OTG it will most likely only support USB 2.0 transfer speed, despite that it uses what looks like a USB 3.0 micro connector. All USB 3.0 A connector that I own have blue isolation inside the metal frame, independent the color used on the cable or connector, which is either blue or black on my USB 3.0 cable. USB 3.0 A connector have an additional row of connectors removed in the back, that can't be seen unless you look directly in one.
I have been looking for USB 3.0 OTG cable or an USB 3.0 A to micro USB 3.0 to but could not find one advertised yet.

Okay, that sounds good enough. I'll order one and see how it goes. USB 2.0 isn't that bad to be honest, but 3.0 would be super cool.

Have you tried the USB 3.0 A to µUSB 3,0 cable that came with the note? As I wrote in a different post I had tried to use this cable that came with my note 3 as well as µUSB 2.0 OTG none worked, even though they worked with the note 2 and Nexus 7 only a few days ago. I could not get any of the USB-Sticks to show up in own own folders or in the ES-Explorers.
Could anyone acces external storage so far?

Interesting I could only find µUSB OTG cabel doing a search and as I wrote above all mini to µUSB-Adapters I tried did not provide connection for the 5th pin. What brand are they and where did you get them?

Yes, every USB 3.0 connection consists of seperate USB 2.0 and 3.0 parts.

I could not find how to activate it in the manual.
Some pages show/say you have to activate the USB 3.0 first,
it works only with windows pc and then
it works only for 10' before switching back to USB 2.0 speed.
However I could not find this option in the menu when I connect the Note 3 to my HP Elitebook win 7 USB 3.0 port. Can anyone point out where in the menu this should appear or if additional software is needed?
It does not detect USB 3.0 devices, e.g. like USB 128 GB PNY USB-stick.
This is stupid since it defeats the purpose of providing fast data transfer when you have The only benefit I have from USB 3.0 is that it is less likely that I try to force the USB 3.0 OTG 180° reversed, sind the noth helps.
PS.: My µUSB 3.0 OTG has 4 pins for USB 2.0 and 5 for USB 3.0 in the A female connector and 5 each in the two parts of the µUSB 3.0 male connector

Here is a companion device for those already using the the Webtop hack.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1199443
It's the same OTG USB hub hack used with the Atrix, just wanted to share my setup and testing. So far it works excellent.
Right now, I have a USB keyboard and mouse, a FAT32 flashdrive, and a FAT32 external HDD all hooked up the the hub, and I'm watching a movie
off the HDD.
The basic theory of operation is that in micro usb connectors there is a fifth pin, actually the 4th over in a schematic. That pin is actually the ID pin, when its state changes it indicates to the phone that it USB mode is changing. In our case, we ground it, telling the phone to go into host mode. Now because the phone cant supply power to the USB device, we have the red jumper wire on the hub itself. This is effectively bridging the +5 from the power supply to the phone.
It should be noted that as of this post, i have only tested FAT32 formatted drives with this setup.
I'm working with a friend at the moment on an NTFS module, so the Photon can utilize NTFS drives.
Now, my setup looks a bit off because my connectors are on order and the one in the pictures, is one I cut out of a motorola cable. So it doesn't look pretty, but works great.

It can be any powered hub, if you plan to use an external HDD with it you should make sure the power supply for the hub is at least 2 amps. For now its only USB 2.0, USB 3 isnt compatible. I modified a stock USB micro cable, but you can but a OTG cable that will work with this setup. Like the link below, that is a OTG adapter. Also, the hub would need a few modifications, like i was talking about at the top.

You may want to check your OTG cable. If its not set up properly it will not function. The un-used pin in the micro connector must be grounded. Ive noticed not all the cables you can buy are quite right. Thats why i build my own. I hope to get up rev 2 tomorrow...a bit more in depth. Maybe i can shed some more light on the issue...

Thanks for looking into this.
So, once you've mod a USB hub, are you using a cable that is <male micro USB to female USB A>?
I've not seen that before. Usually, USB cables that have a micro USB on one end will have a male USB A on the other, not a female. I did a quick search and couldn't really find any <male micro USB to female USB A> cables. I also didn't see any female A to female A cables that would allow for the same thing.
Please elaborate, thanks.
Edit: oh, maybe you use a USB 2.0 A to Micro B Female / Male Adaptor?
You need to buy some from amazon search micro usb to usb female. Or ever female usb to female usb they sell for $2 plus shipping. I bought otg cable didn't make a difference had to take it apart as well.

Just a heads up you need to connect your usb power adapter to the red usb from the hub then your otg and phone to the black and keyboard/mouse infra-red or 2.4 ghz stuff to the female usb adapters. Remember red goes to power!
I went back and forth trying to figure it out when all i had to do was push power to red. Duh!!

Ok, I was confused by what jguevara wrote. jguevara, could you tell me if I got this right?
1) Buy this OTG "cable" - it's really just a adapter:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-usb-on-the-go-host-otg-adapter-pair-50774
2) You might also want a hub for powering USB devices
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/cable-style-dual-power-1000ma-usb-2-0-4-port-hub-13526#open full view
The OTG adapter already does the "4th pin to ground" thing described by the OP, so using the adapter on the Photon makes the phone go into USB Host mode.
The phone, acting as host, won't have enough power via the USB port to power many USB devices, like portable hard drives. So that's why you need a powered USB hub. The hub in the link has an extra red USB connector. You can use the Motorola USB power adapter(the one that came with your phone) as a power source for the hub.
Also, I don't think this setup will charge your phone. It will charge devices connected to the other end of the USB HUB, but not your phone, correct? So, if you're using this setup to transfer files from one portable hard drive to another portable hard drive, with the phone acting as the USB host for the transfer, you'll be using up battery power the whole time it's transferring.
Do I have that right? jguevara?

DIY OTG Cable

Has anyone made an OTG cable for the TFP? I don't like the chunky USB OTG connector and thought an OTG cable would be much better.
Not quite sure what you mean.
The only proper usb connector is a standard type A connector located on the keyboard, it has insufficient pins to implement OTG. The only other usb connectors are the propriety asus ones, one on the tablet and one on the keyboard, the other small connector on the tablet is HDMI output
I have the "chunky" USB OTG connector as well.. I don't think there's a cable though... I looked everywhere on the net
I don't have a dock therefore the only way I can plug a USB flash drive, Keyboard/mouse into the TFT is via the ASUS USB OTG Host adapter View attachment 1384503
I was after something a little slimmer and believe a OTG cable would be ideal - Refer to picture for an example of what I'm referring to View attachment 1384504
Micro USB OTG cables can be used with many phones and tablets sporting a micro USB connector. The TFP obviously doesn't have a micro USB connector therefore I was hoping someone knew how to make an ASUS 40 pin to female Type-A plug which replicates the ASUS USB OTG Host adapter.
Has anyone pulled apart the ASUS USB OTG host apapter? What's inside it?
Hey guys. There are several articles and videos around on how to make your own OTG cable. It essentially involves shorting a single pin. I have no idea if it'll work with a TFP, but I'm going to give it a shot today or tomorrow if I get some time. My plan is to use the normal TFP USB cable, but plug it into a female/female USB gender changer that has been modified to short the pin. I'm almost positive that it'll work on my SGS3, and I don't see why it wouldn't also work for my TFP. I'll report back.
Nevermind. I now see that the TFP USB end has five pins, so they won't match up with the 4-pin female USB port. Oh well...
TFP and OTG
Does anyone know if the OTG will support a USB hub?

The TFP doesn't have OTG, it's a regular USB host.
So yea, it will support a hub because it's a standard USB device class, with its driver already part of the kernel.

No, not at all. Look carefully at the USB 3 plug - yes it's bigger but it also contains a USB2 shaped plug. USB2 cables plug into that as per normal. Think of it as USB2 with extra pins to the side of it - that's also why it has an odd shape.

I've heard about this as well. But I don't see how it's possible since the G2 dosen't have a USB 3.0 Micro-B port. Compared to the Galaxy Note 3, which does.
I'm pretty sure people are seeing this message because the Snapdragon 800 chipset supports it. But the G2 does not actually have the circuitry for it.

you would be correct. Tested it out. Even plugging into 3.0 it still pops up that message and it still took 25 seconds for a 430meg file.
The USB port used on the LG G2 does indeed have extra pins that could be used for USB 3.0. If you look directly at the port, there is an additional 5 pins recessed behind the standard connector. As of yet I cannot figure out what they do, but they may be a proprietary connector for a custom slim USB 3.0 connection. They could also be for some other uses, such as video out or for connecting to accessories, but I don't know what.

If you look directly at the port, there is an additional 5 pins recessed behind the standard connector.

I guess that it is HDMI pins

Slimport prob
I have tried it. First, plugged on USB 2, got error, then plugged it on USB 3 port, worked fine, no notification at all.
Haven't test if transfer speed meets USB 3 specification.

What cable you have used? On stock cable I still got an error on USB3 port.

Stock cable.
The g2 has a usb 2.0 port on the phone. It won't support the faster transfer speeds or the faster charging of usb 3.0. It doesn't have the extra pins of micro usb 3.0.

If anything it would be SlimPort, which the phone does have, but I don't believe SlimPort uses any extra pins, just the normal micro USB 5.

I dunno, the official spec sheet shows USB 2.0.

The chipset fully supports USB3 standard as it has an integrated controller for it. When you plug into a computer the phone even gives a notification popup that it supports USB3 for faster transfer speeds. The port appears to be a USB2 port though, and a USB3 port would look like this:

Those extra pins probably have to do with HDMI output through the USB port as ddv2005 said.

Exactly. USB 3.0 microUSB port is much wider than a USB 2.0 microUSB port. There is no way the LG G2 can support the speeds or charging of USB 3.0 with the current USB 2.0 port. That warning only comes up because the G2 contains the Snapdragon S800 chip that has USB 3.0 support.
I'm not sure you'll want or need USB 3, for the following reasons:
1. You won't want it for charging, because the faster you charge a Lithium-Ion battery, the quicker it dies. We all charge it overnight, so we have at least 5-6 hours for charging, and it needs much less.
2. You won't need it for file transfer, because most of us don't was to fuss with cables, and simply use wireless transfers. Not to mention the storage on the LG is so small (16 or 32GB), that there is simply not too much to move...

Welcome abroad man!
I love your videos and reviews!
Will you be getting this ZUK z1?!
I'm going to try for sure I've been looking at for a while
Although not a cable but still very convenient to expand the phones storage temporarily or transfer files:
Kingston DataTraveler 64 GB Micro Duo Type C USB 3.1 Gen 1/USB 3.0 Flash Drive
Works great for me.
Warning! Not all USB C to A cables are safe to use! Read this: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/1...ly-dangerous-third-party-cables-and-adapters/
The orzly cable is not OK acording to this, the resistor in it is to small and it can fry the USB-A device you plug into.

For the Zuk Z1 they are! The Lenovo factory and OnePlus original USB C cables have the same error. the OP2 and Z1 dont charge at 3A standard so you have nothing to worry about

I have idea to buy a MicroUSB -> USB C conversor at eBay: http://www.ebay.es/itm/291556075086?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
Is this compatible with the Zuk? dangerous?
Thanks
Has anyone found any UK chargers for this? I don't think a shaving adaptor would be able to handle these would it?
Good news!!! I just got in my Pixel yesterday and tested a load of new cables from Orzly and the OnePlus Cables and adapters! Bad news is the OP are def out of spec even the adapter! Good news all the new Orzly cables meet specs video is uploading now!

Wich white one??? MicroSD????
The Y OTG cable doesn't work with the Z1, I reported it in case someone wanted to buy it. Its possible to use USB devices like keyboards or mice, but I wasn't able at all to mount USB flash drives. Its possible to use it as charging cable but OTG function doesn't work at the same time.
The Microusb to USB type-C adapters are for charging and they work good. For OTG you need a dedicated adapter.
BTW Its possible to connect a USB 3.0 Hard Disk without external power supply, the Z1 can handle it It read both NTFS and exFat but isn't allowed to write.

1 - Does it work for data and charging, using a regular USB - micro USB cable?
2 - Does it work as OTG adaper, using a regular OTG USB female - micro USB cable?
Thanks.

Charging and data yes, it works as long you use a good cable. OTG no, I treid with various adapters but nothing, also using a female to female USB adapter on a Type C cable doens't work. Only mine 2 Type-C to USB 3.0 adapters are able to mount flash memories or HD and not all USB flash drives or SD adapters work.
