[Q] Bootloader Question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I have a Galaxy S4 with the M1 update. Is there no way for me to flash to a MDK build so I can get S-OFF?
Thanks,
Adam

S-off is for HTC devices. On this devices it's about simply unlocking the bootloader, but there has been no way to unlock the bootloader as of yet. The mdk build only has a workaround called loki which gives the boot.loki the availability of custom recovery and flashing.

Ahhh that makes sense. I came from a HTC phone LOL. Do we have people actively working on getting our bootloader unlocked?

I'm not actually sure about that, Verizon and Samsung are starting to lock these phones hard, similar to Motorola where we are gonna end up relying on Safestrap

Not at this time. Only option is safe strap...I run hyperdrive 10 and jelly beans build 7 with no issues.

So im coming from the HTC DNA, just got my S4 today. Rooted and unlocked already. Is there a process to achieve s-off on galaxy devices like htc devices, or is it not needed for flashing radios, splash screens, etc...?

Verizon has it locked down if you're on ME7. No workaround yet.

Interesting. He said he was already rooted & "unlocked". I guess that means he has MDK & has Lokied. So first he needs to be cautioned to not take the ME7 update. As for S-off, would a custom rom /kernel not take care of it?
Edit : if he can install custom recovery & is rooted it should already be taken care of.
If you truly have a locked down ME7 the only current option is developer Hashcode's safestrap method to flash roms.

OTA 4.3 Root method Works

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this or not but I came across this method through Google. It worked for my Verizon Note 2 with the OTA 4.3 update. I also used Foxfi until the update. With Titanium Backup, I froze the KNOX security and Foxfi works again without asking to contact VZW. Thanks to the Devs who are responsible for this method. I hope it is ok that I shared the link.

I had my phone unrooted and on 4.3, ran the install.bat and it's rooted!
I can confirm as well. Thank you!

Unlocked too?..I heard root is possible, but bootloader unlock is not.

Don't know about unlocking the bootloader. I haven't found anything for that yet.

This method also worked for me, however I had to restore back to stock 4.3 with odin first.
Thanks!
Congrats! You successfully perma locked your bootloader by taking the 4.3 OTA.

For those of us who don't care about the bootloader, your statement is moot.

This is the case for me. I just needed root for Titanium backup primarily.
At least people will know there is a way to root it. Hopefully one of the devs will figure out how to unlock the new boot loader.

I don't think that downgrading is possible without tripping the KNOX security counter. As far as the s4, this root version should root the phone, and I believe that I have read somewhere about a safestrap app thst allows you to flash roms and such.

I have had no success with this method as yet. I run the script, and it seems to run fine, then after it's rebooted, when it says to run SuperSU, and let it update if it asks, the update always fails. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Found a way around it?

Sonofabitch it worked...I bought my Note 2 cash, JUST after it had received the 4.3 update (sigh) I understand about the no bootloader thing, but being able to use Titanium Backup again is awesome

Upgrade from MDK??

Currently on Jelly Beans 7 with MDK and using TWRP recovery on my Verizon S4. I've been using this for so long without much desire to update..
Starting to get the urge to update again.
What am I missing staying on mdk 4.2.2?
And if I do decide to upgrade, is TWRP still the recovery of choice?
What's my upgrade path from here? Flash back to stock mdk and take OTA, or move directly to a rooted 4.3 ROM?

Do not take an ota. You have the most desirable build #

I agree. I wouldn't take the OTA. There are 4.3 and 4.4 based ROMs that you can flash. Once you upgrade, you'll be stuck on whatever build Samsung issues (right now, that's 4.3).

You should just flash a 4.3 ROM. Search the android development thread. There's no need to loose your unlocked bootloader.

MDK doesn't have an unlocked bootloader... They just have an exploit that allows a workaround.
I agree with everyone above. Don't take the OTA. Since you have MDK you also have a custom recovery and can flash many ROMs. There are many flavors on 4.3 and 4.4 available currently. Read about them, the available features, and such. Then decide what you want.
OP: Should I upgrade from MDK??
XDA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Fyar4wJ3-Y
We know the bootloader isn't actually unlicked on mdk.... I think that's just lamans terms so people know what they have lol. Seriously no offense to the op at all.... Its just amazing how some people are running custom recoveries and ROMs on MDK s4's and then think of taking ota's
Sent from my unknown using Tapatalk
Just in case OP is confused I want to clarify that MDK is the bootloader. You want to preserve that because it allows the installation of custom recoveries. This is separate from the baseband which may also be labeled MDK. You can always update your Radio baseband without losing root, however you would not want to do this with an OTA. You would want to download this from xda as a flashable zip.

Android 4.3 Unlock Bootloader?

Hi all,
I looked around and it seems to me there is currently no way to unlock the bootloader on the Verizon Note 2 w/ 4.3 Jellybean installed. I have my phone rooted, but I would really like to install CM. Do any of you know if we're getting closer to a method to unlock the bootloader? Is there already one? Will we never get one? Just an update is all I'm looking for. Really appreciate all answers. Thanks a lot!

Actually, that downgrades your phone to a version that still has the unlockable bootloader, it doesn't unlock the 4.3 bootloader. Granted, that the end point is essentially the same, it is a different methodology.
My actual bootloader version is I605VRALJB (4.11). I unlocked long ago with Adams original method...pre Casual...lol. So being able to go back to the 4.12 bootloader would be a good thing for people stuck on 4.3 and locked bootloader. It would allow the flashing of ROMs and custom recovery...the end goal...as you mentioned, but ...true it is not a 4.3 bootloader unlock....lol

Check it out, they can do it and what a great job they do. I just got mine back from then and it was on 4.3 OTA with locked bootloader. Now I'm on 4.1.2 and unlocked bootloader. Just flashed kitkat and TWRP . Josh will treat you right.

[Q] why can't custom Roms be flashed?

So I read on safe root method that with a locked bootloader you can't flash Roms or do twrrp or cwm. Coming from a Motorola droid RAZR maxx xt912 and having a locked bootloader I was able to flash any rom for my device and deal with whatever bugs. Is this still true for my note 2 with a locked bootloader?
I also came from the RAZR and I have wondered the same thing. I trust what the Devs say though. I would like to know though whats the difference just for my own personal knowledge.

Having only done a very short search, my guess is the Droid MAXX is using something like the bootstrap method. While this doesn't unlock the bootloader, it uses an exploit to allow a custom recovery and then custom roms.
Yeah they use Safestrap. I think its the same method that's used on the S4 and N3. I don't think custom kernels can be flashed though so no over clock for them.

I believe there's 2 things in play here. First I believe that device was able to utilize kexec which allowed you to flash kernels and therefor allowed aosp roms. Second, safestrap also comes into play. In theory, safestrap would work for a locked Note 2 but I don't believe anybody has bothered making it work so I can't be sure.
