[Q] VM Galaxy roms? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Evening everyone
I'm looking to get a new phone. My current one Evo V has terrible battery life, and the bezel is starting to come off, due to being dropped. It's just in a generally sorry state, and I want to upgrade. I've been looking at the Galaxy S3 on Virgin Mobile. I have a few questions, namely:
Which category should I be looking at for roms?
Since I don't have the phone yet, I'm unsure of the model, etc, so I'm not entirely sure which forum I should be looking in.
Can I use Sprint roms?
If I active, and then root/flash/etc, is there any reason I can't/shouldn't use a Sprint rom? I know I'd have to change the APN to work with VM MMS. Are there any VM specific roms that I should use instead?
Is there any reason I shouldn't get this phone?
This is mainly for my own peace of mind. I know it's a great phone, but I don't want to drop ~300$ if I can get something with the same amount of dev support, for less.
Thanks everyone!

Go to settings- about phone - model number.
You can ONLY use ROMs made for your model.
Flashing ROMs not made for your phome model will definitely mess up your phone and may even lead to a permanent, unrecoverable hardbrick.
Read the stickies. All the best.

Thanks for the quick replay, but as I stated in OP, I haven't bought a phone yet. Therefore I can't check the model number. I was really hoping someone with some VM experience would see this and be able to give me a definitive answer.
And yeah, I know you should only ever flash roms made for your specific model. However, a lot of VM phones are Sprint models, with rebranded face plates and the like. Usually Sprint roms can be flashed on them, though with limited usability.

Have a look in the sprint s3 forum then and ask there. This is the i9300 forum. Miles away in hardware and geography.

Telus Forum?

Are there plans to create a Telus forum?
I have both a Samsung Galaxy S T959D and a Galaxy S 4G T959P. When I go looking for answers in "like" phones I normally get told that this is not the place to ask or did you search the forums? I would be nice to have one place for Telus related issues. All I want to do is root my phone but I have talked to other Telus users that have used the forums and wrong software and failed miserably.
Thanks and Best Regards.
For rooting your phone, I'd suggest you go to the respective forum for your devices.

Hi System,
That is just it, there is no forum for anything Telus specifically for me Samsung T959P or D. From what I have read, the hardware is different for this phone and has the potential to become a paper weight if we use advise from phones that look like ours but the different internals.
Maybe someone has already asked the question for your specific device? Try the search function with your device version. If nothing appears, maybe specify it in your question.
If you can't get help on a Galaxy S forum, I don't know where else
The thing is if XDA created specific forums for each carrier branded phone it would get quite cluttered.
Okay System, I understand, but I had to give it a try. I probably just have to wait a while. The update came out on Saturday from 2.2 to 2.3.4 so eventually someone will figure it out.
Thanks for your time. You can close the thread.

[Q] Rooting & ROMS on Evo 4G LTE & Galaxy S3

Hello,
I, like so many others am trying to decide between the Samsung Galaxy S3 & the HTC Evo 4G LTE. One thing that I definitely want is to be able to root and flash ROMS on whichever phone I get. I know that root has been achieved on both phones but I'd like thoughts on developer support between the two, and which one (or both) can be set back to an original state where it's not known it was rooted for warranty purposes. I know HTC lets you unlock the bootloader but unless there's a workaround it'll say relocked on the bootloader allowing anyone savvy enough to check that it's been rooted. Wondering if current root versions are S-on, S-off or either with the owner choosing. Or perhaps S-off is a must in order to truly relock the bootloader so it says locked instead of relocked. I also read in my research that you can trip a counter on the S3 the counts how many ROMS have been flashed... Although I also read it's possible to root without tripping the counter but if anything goes wrong, you can't reset the counter.
Now, it seems like the S3 would have the most dev support since it's been released globally but I'm assuming that the ROMS developed for the global quad core version won't be compatible with the dual core US version. Is this correct? Is there Evo dev community really committed so that I could expect similar work being done for both phones?
Lastly, I'm assuming that the S3 will have more accessories available for it given its release on 5 US carriers without any changes in the phone... Seems like a first for any phone but the iphone. Do you agree with this or do you expect lots of accessories and aftermarket items available for the Evo LTE as well.
I know that there's a lot of questions in this but with the phones being so similar, this may be the area that differentiates them. And I know that I definitely want to root the phone... No question on that.
Thanks so much in advance for any and all advice, info and help you can give. I appreciate it so much!

getting sn s3 in a few weeks...a couple ?'s

i have been using the droid x2 for about two years. it has a locked bootloader, and very limited abilities as far as flashing roms goes. kernels will be a new thing to me. i have noticed that in most rom install instructions, there are no specifications on what version to be on. lol not something i am used to.
could someone point me in the right direction for some reading material on the subject? this phone specifically? i understand a fair amount about being rooted and performing various things within recovery and android in general. i just want to make sure that before i go messing around with my s3, i know exactly what im doing. thanks in advance.
also, i have read a decent amount already, and it seems like this phone is fairly easy to brick,? also not something i am used to. the droid x2 with its locked bootloader was next to impossible to brick.
cant wait to join the ranks.! thanks again.

Good choice, mate!
Which S3 is it? I see you're in the USofA. There are several variants of S3 in the world. American/Canadian S3's are the Snapdragon variant, not the International variety, which is what this forum is for. If it is not the GT-I9300, anything you flash from here will definitely brick your phone.

thank you sir. ! i guess i would be getting the non international version. :highfive:
international version has many developers than the other variants. once you start flashing custom roms or kernels or mods, there is no guarantee that your phone will not brick. flashing without damage to the phone depends on how you do that. goodluck.

Yeah Make sure you're in the right forum for your phone. Follow that chart for your carrier.
Also if you happen to be getting T-Mobile,there is a new variant that has the LTE radio T999L which is a hardware difference and not a simple software upgrade. So if you did happen to get T-Mobile, hopefully you have the LTE variant.

Click on your phone info.
Write down the last 3 digits if your build version.
If it is MJ7 enjoy your Samsung iphone or take the risk of Chinese infiltration with vroot.
If its anything else, type go to GOOGLE.COM and type in those 3 letters followed by the word "Root".
Good luck!
Doesn't get much simpler than that.. :sly:

Ok So my build version is MJ7.
Is it unlockable through the ROM/software here on XDA or any other reliable ROM/sofware?
Please can you guys list the instructions or a link that tells me A to Z what to do. Thanks!

You can't root using a reliable technique, and even if you root you can't install custom ROMs at the moment. Safestrap may eventually become possible.

Just to make sure, this S4 MJ7 Verizon cant be unlocked to run on Tmobile using a reliable method?
Sorry for acting like a total newb. And many thanks.

The I545 is not simlocked, which means that you can run any carrier's SIM. There are SEVERAL threads here that explain what you need to do to run an I545 on T-Mobile. Unfortunately, the search function is broken yet again, but there is NO excuse for starting another thread on a topic that has been covered several times before.
I know, you can't tell, but this is a very frequently asked and answered question.

Nope i tried tmobile sim doesnt work
I love this website, but I still haven't used it once because I search through threads always find answers like this. Its truly amazing how the website owners have sections for different versions and different hardware. But constant trolling by veteran users is common.
This(android) is an open source project but that doesnt mean every one here knows what people are talking about. I get discouraged posts like the one above^^. I have been using android since it came out on G1 and still havent rooted any of my devices YET. This time I actually thought I would but you know what **** this.
Anyways last attempt? Can my device be RELIABLY(trusted) carrier unlocked so I can use it on Tmobile. Thanks.
Also is there a thread where I can lookup jargon/lingo/acronyms specific to this site/genre? Link please.

Perhaps you could post on one of the T-Mobile threads here and explain what "doesn't work" means, as they may be able to help you.
Non-Verizon SIMs work for me, but I'm not using a SIM from some other US carrier.

Sorry if you thinking this is "trolling by a veteran user".
First, you need to understand: the i545 is not SIM locked. Any SIM will work.
However, there's some question as to whether or not that SIM will allow other US carriers to work. Mine works with a SIM that gives me AT&T data. (It's from a European carrier.)
Here's how you can answer your question. First, look at the top of this window.
There's a box on the top reading "Search this forum".
I entered "tmobile" there, then got the following threads:

Basic steps are to get a sim.
Then go and see if it picked ip the APN settings. If not you should be able to create a new APN and put in the values manually. Search on xda for the values
Finally. Theres a thread in xda that explains how to download a phone info app. Which will allow you to set the phone radio to LTE/GSM.
last thing you want to check is that you can do wifi, sms, mms, voice mail, etc.

A lot of people do make things for themselves, I run my own crappy builds all the time as I'm learning. Of course the more experienced developers release stable work for the public. Regardless, the purpose of the site isn't to release software for the "everyday android user".
It's about the journey not the end result.
I really can't explain the purpose of this site any better than this post by Kyphur:
"I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position."

I ddnt mean to be like rude or anything guys. So sorry for acting like that.
Now honestly i Google about android rooting/self installin the new version and XDA comes up all the time, so I've known about website long time ago and I see that there are like 100s of posts a minute mostly by total newbs. I'm newbie to android and XDA but like actually do wanna learn this stuff. As for developer part you guys are programmers and hackers and its your hobby and its pretty cool you do this stuff on daily basis, but for me that is too far ahead.

I didn't think you were being a rude, but I just thought I would share with you post that explains the purpose of XDA very well. It might seem harsh because it's out of context & was originally directed at some a$$hole.
We were all newbs here, I'm no programmer I just like learning code because I like learning how all of this stuff works. I'm glad you want to start learning to. All I did in the beginning was google search "rooting" and a bunch of write-ups & video's came up that taught me a lot.

[Q] GS4 MK2 questions..

Hello all,
This is my first post here at XDA!
So Ive searched so please forgive me as I'm still learning quite a bit.. But having an MK2 GS4 - why am I only limited to using Safestrap and limited ROMS? Currently running Hyperdrive which is great, but found my S3 w/ IllusionRom to be MUCH more customizable and clean.
Again, I'm newer to rooting but why is it that everything seems limited right now? After reading and reading, it appears that developers are sort of dancing around voiding warranty and Knox software.. Will this be resolved at some point? I basically want to have the ability to flash some of these other cool aosp roms, etc. I could care less about voiding warranty's. I want all this stock rom warranty crap off my phone!
Thanks guys!
I'm not a developer, but it is my understanding that an unlocked boot loader is needed for the type of ROMs you want to flash. And the S4's bootloader is locked for every version other than MDK.

Naddict, thanks for moving my post to the appropriate thread.
I apologize if it appears I hadn't searched. However my question still remains unanswered. I have read the threads you suggested as well as many on my own.
Will the mk2 eventually be fully unlocked? Will the rest of us be able to run custom recoveries and flash more roms like MDK at some point?
Forgive me if this has been answered, but I'm still pulling the newb card and have yet to find an answer. I'm also a little impatient as I my s3 had many more options available.
Thanks again.

Don't really know how you can expect an answer to your questions. I don't know of anyone on these boards that can see into the future. Will MK2 be unlocked? Doesn't look like it, but who knows. All you can do is keep an eye on the forums and hope for the best.

Forgive me if this has been answered, but I'm still pulling the newb card and have yet to find an answer. I'm also a little impatient as I my s3 had many more options available.
Thanks again.

This question you are asking has had countless threads and posts devote to the locked bootloader on the S4 since the release of ME7 firmware. Not to get cheesey here but asking if the bootloader willl be unlocked is a ridiculous as no one has an answer to that and dozens of devs have been working on it for months on their spare time. The only mechanism available is safestrap and we are lucky to have that working for us becasue sooner or later that will most likley be blocked down the road. If you want an honest answer, in my view, we probably will not have a bootloader exploit comparable to the one found for MDK. Devs are working on a Kerec exploit but haven't been able to find one yet. Samsung and other cell phone manuf are responding to the Carriers requirements of having an unhackable phones because the enterprise customers are making that a requirement. The hacking community is a factional component of sales and if you want a phone for running custom ROMS, best save your money and get a DEV phone as that is the most likely way to do it.

I have high hopes that some talented person or group will eventually find a work around for this boot loader issue whether safestrap(hashcode) figure out a kexec exploit. Or another Loki type exploit is found. The most current thread on this situation can be found in general and surge1223 is the op. But your right from a custom ROM standpoint the s3 is in a better position. Good luck.

Thanks for all the feedback and again, I apologize if these questions have been covered or are seemingly up answerable.
As I originally stated, I am a newb. Simply jealous of the mdk guys. I'd like some more freedom and thought going from S3 to S4 wouldn't change much as far as customizable options. Guess I should have done more research..

Hit up Swappa like I did and grab a MDK S4 and wait for it to come like a Lil kid at Christmas....
Which is what I'm doing. Or jump ship over to like... Sprint and trip your Knox flag and install CWM.
Or... Rob a bank so you can afford a dev edition S4.
Swappa it is..
Lol
