Is there some application that can monitor internet usage by application? I know 3G Watchdog does the job, but it only shows the global consumption and I want to see which apps are using my internet because sometimes I can see my internet being used but I don't know which app is using it.
Also can someone tell me how I can deactivate it and turn it on until I need it.
Thanks!!
Have a look at Call meter NG...

Call Meter NG doesn't do the trick either
@OP If you find software that does that please let me know, coz that would be pretty awesome, using watchdog at the moment but dunno where the data is going.

Count what about GPS exactly?
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
GPS is never counted as data usage, it uses signal from GPS satellites, not the internet connection. However, if you are using Google Maps, the internet connection is used to download the maps.
3GW has not yet the capability of counting usage per application, but a "pro" version will in the near future, only for phones under Android 2.2+ because it's not technically feasible AFAIK with older versions of the OS.
Hey guys,
I really need per app counter especially now for my X10.
I have only a 200mb plan, but I don't ever do anything else on the internet except use Google Voice app to text(since I tend to text a bunch).
Anyways, first month that I had the phone my traffic got up to about 120mb, but that was because I browsed web etc (you know.. got a new toy and started to play with it type of thing), but after this month I installed counter and monitor it from AT&T's website too, and half-way through the month traffic got up to 140mb!
Now I have disabled background data once I noticed that, now I have enabled it but uninstalled Google Voice app, and gonna have to go without it for few days (which isn't that great) and see if it's it that's causing the problem.
The thing is that I need the app one way or the other, and second is that I want to know for sure what EXACTLY is using my traffic.
Any advice is welcome.

LAN Spy Monitor is excellent all-in-one Internet usage monitoring software, it works very well.
Simple poll. Do you have "Use Wireless Networks" enabled, or not? Feel free to post why or why not... battery life concerns? Privacy concerns?
No. Privacy/tinfoil hat concerns.
Nope. It serves as a battery drain and privacy issues. I dont see any reason to use it since I dont use Facebook or Foresquare checkins.
Yes I do. I am always near a charging solution so battery life is no concern to me. Also, I wanna meet the aliens...

Same, though I rarely use FB check ins if I go somewhere special with the lady and want to have bragging rights with friends.

What's the point? I know where I'm going to be before I go there.
I use it for tasker, have it set to turn on wifi when I'm near home.
It checked ON by default, so yes, I am keeping it as default.
I don't deal with social networking sites but using it for weather update and GMaps.

I use Llama to do the same thing. Llama uses cell tower IDs to know where you are instead of polling WiFi or GPS... result=negligible battery drain overhead.

Isn't that what "use wireless networks" does?. I've got my GPS disabled and obviously my wifi is too, so it's just using towers to calculate general location
I have mine turned on, as I use the navigation feature and I like my weather to be updated regularly, although the widget seems to be a tad touchy. Still, with the battery life I'm getting right now, I don't mind it one bit.
i leave it on. I dont notice any additional battery drain and my GPS locks on faster (may have been a coincidence though)
I leave it enabled. I find it cumbersome to turn it on whenever I need to use an app that needs location, and I travel enough to not just set it to my current location. I keep a close eye on related wakelocks and wakeups.

"use wireless networks" makes use of the WiFi or the cell information.
But that option being on, ANY capable app can run services to get your location.
Llama can be configured to strictly rely on only cell data.
For my case: with the use of Llama and "use wireless networks" disabled, I know that no app other than Llama is doing location fetching in the background.

Ohhh I gotcha! Wasn't aware Llama was able to restrict the apps that use it vs how the one built into the OS will let any app use it. Thanks for the clarification!

Can Droidwall be configured to block only background data access by an app? I haven't used it but from its description in Store, it looks like it totally blocks an app from network access.

I don't think so, but it has a widget that allows you to quickly disable it.

No, it can not limit background. It can only block apps from using data; through wifi and/or mobile data.
Is there a voice / messaging app that will work via a wifi connection WITHOUT the need for an Internet connection? For example, two people with phones connected to the same router over wifi, but NO ACCESS to the Internet. I'm assuming apps like Skype would require both devices to be able to communicate with the Skype server to initiate the call, but might allow peer-to-peer afterwards.
I am not interested in making calls or texts to people outside of the wifi network. Does such an app exist?

without any kind of data connection, you cannot communicate to the other person. unless you are conversating in person or via us mail.

Do you understand the difference between the INTERNET and WIFI? It would work over WiFi, but not need a central server, nor would it need a connection to the Internet. If you knew the IP address for the other phone, for example, you could connect with it directly.
I don’t know if there is any local network messaging app for android, but I think it is definitely possible to write such app.
But even if there is no such application, you can always set up your own local XMPP (or some other IM protocol) server (visible only from local network) and use any messaging app which supports XMPP protocol. There are plenty of them.
I was thinking of something along those lines. I suppose the heavy solution would be to use a separate computer with asterisk, but I was hoping to find something with just the phones as hardware. The Android 4.0 software has wifi p2p built in, but I'd hate to limit the solution to that environment.
I did find something that seems to work, but is buggy and requires root access: Serval Mesh
This looks like an incredible project and I hope it continues to progress.
If anyone knows of something similar, please reply.

Wifi != internet... You can setup a wireless LAN to share files between computers / devices, without it being connected to the internet. WIfi is just wireless networking... external internet isn't required...

Try this as an experiment: cancel your service with your Internet provider, but keep the router with wifi. Why pay money for the Internet when you've already got wifi? It's the same thing, right?

Guys it is so funny to read your arguments about what is Internet and what is WIFI! You are all wrong as you need to read a bit about that!!!
WIFI is the mean of communications to the network no metter if it is Internet or somthing else and Internet is the global network that you use day to day without even thinking about what it is with all it's services and infrastructure!
p2p video calling
Looks like the app ain't on play store any more. I found one app which allows only voice calls p2p over the wifi, but doesn't have the video calling option.
Anyone know any such app featuring p2p video calling too?

I'm wondering if anybody has ever tried to dig deeper into where and when apps are accessing your data networks regardless of whether it was while you are on wifi or mobile networks. I'm rooted running 4.1.1 and I'm looking for an app that sort of works like a proxy except for my own phone and just my phone's data. The goal is to see which apps are accessing the internet and what websites they are accessing and how often, ect. Basically I'd like to eavesdrop on my own apps. Is that possible? How can I do this? Thanks in advance.
What your asking is to track app data usage. Yeah, there are some apps, here:

SandroProxy may help you. Probably tcpview from chrome devtools.

Hello!
When my i9300 (Omini ROM) enable internet connection (WiFI or 3G), it starts downloading something to my device. Because i can see it fully utilized my internet connection (only download, not uploading). But I don't know what is it (Which application does it). Are there any way to track which app do it or are there anyway to view each application internet usage?
Thanks!

There is a built in system in settings in data usage.. U can limit your usage too with that.. Then there are apps like 3g watchdog etc..which kind of do a similar job...

OK Kunal. I'll try 3 G watch dog. But are there any way to view WiFi usage? I think in system settings it shows 3G, 4G data usage.
In device Settings>data usage>WiFI, I can see Google keyboard eats my data. It used 1.61GB. Oh man. Why is that?
