Simple poll. Do you have "Use Wireless Networks" enabled, or not? Feel free to post why or why not... battery life concerns? Privacy concerns?
No. Privacy/tinfoil hat concerns.
Nope. It serves as a battery drain and privacy issues. I dont see any reason to use it since I dont use Facebook or Foresquare checkins.
Yes I do. I am always near a charging solution so battery life is no concern to me. Also, I wanna meet the aliens...

Same, though I rarely use FB check ins if I go somewhere special with the lady and want to have bragging rights with friends.

What's the point? I know where I'm going to be before I go there.
I use it for tasker, have it set to turn on wifi when I'm near home.
It checked ON by default, so yes, I am keeping it as default.
I don't deal with social networking sites but using it for weather update and GMaps.

I use Llama to do the same thing. Llama uses cell tower IDs to know where you are instead of polling WiFi or GPS... result=negligible battery drain overhead.

Isn't that what "use wireless networks" does?. I've got my GPS disabled and obviously my wifi is too, so it's just using towers to calculate general location
I have mine turned on, as I use the navigation feature and I like my weather to be updated regularly, although the widget seems to be a tad touchy. Still, with the battery life I'm getting right now, I don't mind it one bit.
i leave it on. I dont notice any additional battery drain and my GPS locks on faster (may have been a coincidence though)
I leave it enabled. I find it cumbersome to turn it on whenever I need to use an app that needs location, and I travel enough to not just set it to my current location. I keep a close eye on related wakelocks and wakeups.

"use wireless networks" makes use of the WiFi or the cell information.
But that option being on, ANY capable app can run services to get your location.
Llama can be configured to strictly rely on only cell data.
For my case: with the use of Llama and "use wireless networks" disabled, I know that no app other than Llama is doing location fetching in the background.

Ohhh I gotcha! Wasn't aware Llama was able to restrict the apps that use it vs how the one built into the OS will let any app use it. Thanks for the clarification!

Can Droidwall be configured to block only background data access by an app? I haven't used it but from its description in Store, it looks like it totally blocks an app from network access.

I don't think so, but it has a widget that allows you to quickly disable it.

No, it can not limit background. It can only block apps from using data; through wifi and/or mobile data.

Is there some application that can monitor internet usage by application? I know 3G Watchdog does the job, but it only shows the global consumption and I want to see which apps are using my internet because sometimes I can see my internet being used but I don't know which app is using it.
Also can someone tell me how I can deactivate it and turn it on until I need it.
Thanks!!

@OP If you find software that does that please let me know, coz that would be pretty awesome, using watchdog at the moment but dunno where the data is going.

Count what about GPS exactly?
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
GPS is never counted as data usage, it uses signal from GPS satellites, not the internet connection. However, if you are using Google Maps, the internet connection is used to download the maps.
3GW has not yet the capability of counting usage per application, but a "pro" version will in the near future, only for phones under Android 2.2+ because it's not technically feasible AFAIK with older versions of the OS.
Hey guys,
I really need per app counter especially now for my X10.
I have only a 200mb plan, but I don't ever do anything else on the internet except use Google Voice app to text(since I tend to text a bunch).
Anyways, first month that I had the phone my traffic got up to about 120mb, but that was because I browsed web etc (you know.. got a new toy and started to play with it type of thing), but after this month I installed counter and monitor it from AT&T's website too, and half-way through the month traffic got up to 140mb!
Now I have disabled background data once I noticed that, now I have enabled it but uninstalled Google Voice app, and gonna have to go without it for few days (which isn't that great) and see if it's it that's causing the problem.
The thing is that I need the app one way or the other, and second is that I want to know for sure what EXACTLY is using my traffic.
Any advice is welcome.

LAN Spy Monitor is excellent all-in-one Internet usage monitoring software, it works very well.
Do you guys have "Use wireless settings" checked in settings? I know before that it supposedly drained your battery. I have it checked so i can use it for my htc clock/weather widget along with gps checked. Just wondering if its really that bad for your battery
No one ? or anyone ?
If you are referring to settings/Locations I have them both checked. "Use wireless networks" and "Use GPS satellites" The htc clock/weather widget does use the GPS. It uses the triangle radio towers to pinpoint your location. GPS is used for a few of the apps. Google maps is one of them. So to answer your question having those checked doesnt use that much battery. Only the apps that need GPS info will.

The wireless networks setting shouldn't really affect battery usage whatsoever. It simply uses your location within the Sprint network to determine a somewhat accurate location when your gps is off. I leave gps off except for when using Navigation, and leave the wireless network setting on always.
I have heard that leaving the weather widget set to "use current location" or whatever instead of having it set to a fixed city can use extra battery though, seeing as it will try to determine your location more often than not.
Is there any way to disable our devices from automatically connecting to att hotspots? Ill be driving by Starbucks and lose internet because I don't want to sign in to the hot spot so I'm forced to turn wifi off at certain points on the road. Extremely annoying at times especially while streaming music.

If you go into Wi-Fi settings you should see an ATT Wi-Fi Hotspot auto connect option, uncheck it.
I've got it unchecked and I've not noticed it auto connecting to random networks. It used to do so at the mall before I unchecked it.

Or nuke the AT&T hotspot manager bloat...

when i go to applications, and running services, what are "wifi sharing" and "wifi sharing manager"? are those part of android, or att crap?

Sometimes, it is useful to have it to gain free access to AT&T hotspot when the cell connections are slow and spotty. This is one bloatware I purposfully left alone.

If you're rooted (assuming you are), you can turn these off. I froze it via Titanium Backup.

I can't be specific, as my device is absent.
But under wifi there is an option to connect to known wifi locations.
un-tick it
This wont effect your location as GPS and location settings are under a different option.

could be under battery/ power saving? Next to stamina mode?
I know there is a setting for it somewhere
closest i found is under battery but it's to enable wifi in specific locations. not to connect/not connect
Hello,
Best way if you don't want wifi: use the wifi toogle to ON / OFF
If you just to don't be connected auto, I know there is third party apps who do this, but I don't remenber names. Sorry.
Maybe this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060418
Llama?
both of those seem to be enabling/disabling wifi/3g at specific times or locations.
i just want to disable the auto connect facility of wifi without disabling it so it can still detect the SSIDs whether i'm at home or out and about.

ok. so you want wifi enabled, but not to connect. sorry I thought you wanted it to stay disabled.
There is not setting in the Sony rom for that.
Check out Lords post. Llama is what you want.
yeah, nothing showing up in a google either. seems like a security oversight too.
Hmm, Tasker should do this? I have never used it, but people use it to turn their god damn TV and lights on and off (with additional hardware), so I think it should do this simple task(?). I don't know! Maybe someone here has it and can check if they can make a profile that does this.

How do I disable this if I don't want my location sent to some random server? If I Disagree, GPS stays disabled.

In the Location menu in settings, set Location mode to "Device only", you'll notice if you select "High Accuracy", not only does it say it'll use Wi-Fi and mobile networks to determine location, it'll also have the notice about data usage pop up, Device only means it will solely use GPS to determine location.

Imagine High Accuracy mode as A-GPS, using data networks to download GPS coordinates as well as getting your location from IP address location and network proximaty etc
Device only wont use any data networks or cellular information either, try it out anyway, take your sim card out and turn wifi off and go for a walk, see if it works.
It just downloads agps data which helps, making the gps fix much faster. Since this download may charge your service fee, you get the warning. Its nothing about Sony, every phone with gps does that.
