Anyone recommend a "one size fit all email app" like the iphone, for Att S2?
I'm using Exchange, yahoo, gmail. I have lots of folder in my exchange mail and the stock Mail is sux.
Moxier mail is good but only have 1 email acc. I need an app that can put all mails in one place and showing folders instead of coupel apps for emails.
Thanks
I use Gmail for all of my accounts. I set Gmail up to retrieve (pop) mail from my Yahoo account and my other email address forwards to Gmail. I have labels set up, which allows me to organize it. I've been doing this for a while and it works really well.
What about Exchange, all folder will show or i have to go settings and choose specific folder to view? it's a pain in the bu.. . I really like the way iphone's emails handle.

I've never used Exchange, but if you were able to successfully configure it for pop retrieval, it'd work just as your other email addresses, in terms of how you view them (outlined below). Otherwise, perhaps forwarding is an option. For the email address I have forwarding, I set up filters (scans incoming emails for defined rules) to apply labels (e.g., when the sender or recipient is ______, apply this label). It's something you'd have to toy around with, but I've gotten mine set up pretty well.
All emails would show in your Gmail account inbox (with labels on each one, if you've done this) and you have the ability to specifically select a label to only see mail with that label. This is something you can do online or on your device via the Gmail app (viewing individual labels). I've tried just about every email client and I've found that this method is what works best for me.
Good luck.

I was set up like this as well for quite some time - and it worked well. Recently switched to using maildroid, which I like, but haven't customized to get more functionality than I had with gMail yet...
What's wrong with the stock mail client? Seems really nice to me. Should support all of those account types and you can switch folders very easily.

Back in my Captivate days, I found the stock email client to be unreliable. Ever since then, I've been avoiding it.

The problem is with stock email. My folders didn't go in order some + subfolders.... Moxier mail gives exactly the folder in order like the outlook also display the number for new email....like the MS Outlook in computer.
I just reinstalled Moxier mail and use stock mail for yahoo, gmail also. Oh well, no choice

Touchdown is a pretty good one, but you have to pay for it.
I used to use enhanced email on my cappy

The stock email client is very nice and seems to work very well with Exchange. From what I've seen so far:
1) Tasks will sync
2) Folders are supported, much nicer and easier than with the Captivate
3) Flags are supported
4) Various display options such as first line preview, threaded emails, etc
5) Out of Office settings can be made from phone.
6) You can search emails on the server, not just those on your phone
7) In landscape it'll do a preview pane on the right-hand side. Not bad.
Try it, you've got nothing to lose. Seems pretty nice so far. The only thing I am missing is the ability to "check" multiple emails and take an action on a group of them (e.g., delete them all). You need to do it one-by-one. But so far it works well.
Anybody know if the stock email client can be set up for "push only" so it doesn't poll every x minutes for new mail?
Another vote for enhanced email. You can bypass exchange security rules

Enhanced Email is what youre looking for. I'm a huge Exchange user and this program easily integrates and works just like it does on iphone. You can choose which folders to keep in sync and it will notify you whenever a new message arrives in sub-folders.
The only problem I have with the stock email app is that you can't "Select All" and delete. That capability, and the ability to forward emails by clicking on several contacts and adding them , as the stock program does, are two features I really like; however, I can't find an email program that has both capabilities.

I installed Enhance email. However, it looks alike stock mail (may be I haven't explorer it much). I do like Moxier mail because it's giving me the interface just like Outlook (folder is in order same as my work laptop). Unfortunately, Moxier mail only have 1 account. Wish i can add other acc then it should be PERFECT
Exactly as the subject states. I get notifications for both, And honestly, the Gmail app sucks anyways, as it doesn't sync with my email for quote awhile.
You can disable your Gmail account from syncing on gmail, but you can't delete it as far as I know. You can also uninstall the app from root explorer, but I don't know the precautions of that since the market depends on a gmail account. It would be safe to backup.

I always thought it was silly myself. I disable Gmail on every android phone and use the stock email app alone.

I agree. The push notification works better than the stock app. I only use gmail, so its not an issue. That's not to say I don't have a hotmail, live, and yahoo email address, just that I only USE gmail.
The gmail app let's you label, archive and choose which folders sync how long. The stock email client doesn't do any of that.

All I can say is the Gmail App is great, however, I have not used the stock samsung email client as the last time I used it, sucked big time, some email clients *old eudora especially when I first got my Samsung Captivate last year* were getting gibberish from sending e-mails. I use MailDroid Pro and Gmail.. Since upgrading to the i777, I am still using maildroid pro and gmail app. I even get gmail messages in maildroid because of the ease of deleting messages I don't want to see!
HTH,
Charlie
personally, i like having separate notifications via separate apps for my exchange email and gmail... it works better for me that way.
Because the gmail app blows away the stock email app when used with gmail... Since I only use gmail, the other email app is one of the first things I nuke.

Really?
Man, I use GMail too, but the app for it sucks for me. It doesn't update everything nearly as quickly as the stock email client.
1. If I delete emails from my inbox (from a computer or something) it takes hours before it shows up in the GMail app, and vice versa as well.
2. It doesn't refresh the emails on launch, it seems to be quite random (and in the range of a few hours late anyway)
I can see how the stars and folder would be nice, though I don't use them. But still, the intense delay in communication really bugs. Or is it just me?

Apparently, it's just you.
Mine updates fine. I use both. The Gmail for the phone stuff and the other for work exchange email.
My gmail app is great as well. it updates quickly. you may want to check your settings.
i agree with the two above me... for gmail, when i read/delete an email from my computer the notification/email is gone from my phone within 5 seconds.
Don't Feed the Trolls!
Both Gmail and Stock email sucks, IMO. :Q
Gmail client
1. The biggest problem is, it only supported gmail. Everyone has several email accounts, don't you ? Then, you would need at least two email clients to read all of them.
2. No pinch zoom. Sometimes, the emails (in HTML format) exceeds the width of display, so you move to the right side to see them.
3. Sync is sometime slow, as indicated by other posts. I have encounter slow sync several times.
4. When composing new emails, it will prompt you matched recipients after you typed few letter. But, I would have to have an option to pick from Contact app.
Stock email
Most of let downs are due to Exchange support
1. In my corporate Exchange, I setup rules so that incoming emails will be moved to various folders. The stock email can only sync Inbox folder. You have to select that folder(e.g. "My other folder"), the email app will then refresh. But, it does not sync, as such, no notifications.
2. No "delete all" in Trash folder
3. In list view (the screen show preview of emails), to delete an emails, you need to press the email and hold it for few seconds. Then you select "delete". This is non-intuitive design. Gmail uses checkbox, and iPhone uses swipe delete.
4. Then, I feel there is "lag" when deleting the emails. Sometime, right after deleting the emails, the email app paused for few seconds before the app became responsive again. It's because the app is trying to refresh with server. But, it should do so in the background process. iOS's email is definitely much more responsive in this regard.
5. Similar to gmail, there is no way to pick recipients from Contact. You have type few letters, then you can pick from matched list. Don't get me wrong, picking from matched list is good. But, sometimes I just cannot recall recipient names. So bringing-up Contact app to pick recipients will definitely help.
How do you disable the gmail account from syncing (in the stand alone gmail app)?

Choosing delete from a context menu is very intuitive; I think what you mean to say is that is it not efficient. To delete multiple emails in a list view, just press MENU, choose DELETE, and then check off as many emails to delete as you'd like.

Just you my friend. I have the opposite issue. The Gmail app gets emails and updates instantaneously and the Samsung client is a slow battery hog.

Well, it's probably me. At first, I did not know press-and-hold will bring up the context menu. That's why I think it's unintuitive.
But, you are right that I also meant that it's not efficient.
Overall, IMO, the Email/Contact/Calendar apps leave much to be desired , comparing to Blackberry's and iOS'.
Crap you guys were right, it was setup to update several hour's away by default, rather than emails 30-minute. But even after activity it wouldn't refresh in the background.
I am really glad I stirred up good conversation here, seeing everyone's points. Thank you all for your replies
Also, no troll here.
anyways, I decided to just get a paid email apparently that is pretty good, so we will see how that goes.
Is there a consensus on which is the best email app? Is the stock Samsung email client good? I have a gmail account, but also a school account. Is there something other than these two that's generally considered good?
I need to get to my corporate Exchange email server and I always used Touchdown. The user interface has a bit to be desired but I liked that I didn't have to enforce a pin on my phone when I unlock my phone (with touchdown you only have to enter pin when going into the app).
Now I've discovered Enhanced Email which I like much better. No pin needed anywhere and it allows me to use the native calendar app on the s3 which I love.

I prefer the ICS email app, but without root there is no way to install it.
Or is there?
Is there any way to make the gmail app handle other addresses? It works pretty well imo.
No, the Gmail app is just for Gmail, but the original ICS email app looks exactly like the Gmail app and it can handle Gmail and other addresses. We just need a way to get it on the phone without root out a root method that doesn't trip the counter.
So there are two email apps in the S3, Gmail and what appears to be the stock Samsung email client.
in order to use Gmail (push) it seems you have to keep "Sync" enabled in the options. the question is, is enabling this consumes battery by constantly polling/syncing, or is this Sync another name for Push (as in server notifies device rather than the device polling)?
I am trying to figure out what is the best way to setup push. using the Samsung email app, it appears to be true push without the need to have "Sync" on the device enabled.
the gmail app is the closest thing to "push" for all non-exchange email clients.
so i'd say if you use gmail and not exchange - use the app
both email clients can be configured for push, but gmail requires "sync" option enabled on the phone. the samsung email client doesn't require Sync to be enabled for push email..
i think i will stick with samsung email client.. seems better for push email without having to enable Sync (which might use more battery).
thanks guys
helped me also!
Guys, if you know what you are saying here, you have the solution I'm looking for since I got the S3.
The samsung galaxy s3 email client has no push option, at least I haven't found it. It used to have it in the S2. So enlight me please, how do you push gmail, yahoo, etc on samsung email?

someone posted this on another forum:
I am writing this because I want to help all these people who want to have push email when using the stock Email application on Galaxy S3 and other Android phones. I used to have a Blackberry and I find it extremely easy to use the push email option.
It is really extremely easy. This is the step-by-step process:
1. Go to phone Settings.
2. Go to Accounts and Synch.
3. Select Add Account.
4. On the screen that shows up, select Email.
5. On the next screen write your email account (eg. [email protected]) and
your password.
6. Click on Manual Setup (DO NOT CLICK ON NEXT).
7. On the next screen choose Microsoft Exchange Active Synch (yes, this is the correct one, do not be surprized!).
8. On the field Domain\user name, make sure that you have your complete email address, preceded by a \ (ie. \[email protected]).
9. Your password should also be entered (it is done automatically, but if it
is not, add it yourself).
10. In the field Echange Server use m.google.com (check with other email providers what you shoud use - I use a gmail based email service so I can not help you here, but I am sure that it is easy to find out).
11. Check Use Secure Connection and uncheck Use Client Certificate.
12. Click Next and OK if an information box pops up.
13. Change the Account options as desired and click Next.
You are all set. It works like a charm for Gmail accounts, you should make sure it works also for other services / email providers.
Good luck!

I personally use yahoo, and I still haven't found a way to make it work yet. But, gmail, according to what I've read so far, it should work just fine.
I already gave a try to the method above. It works, bute it has a few drawbacks:
1. It uses more data, more battery, more awake time than the push email client on the S2.
2. It works only for gmail, not yahoo. Because yahoo is greedy and wants money for an Exchange feature.

[Q]How can you have push email with the Samsung stock / native email app? Not pull at certain time intervals.
Important:
1.In my test push email was much more battery & data friendly that pull (at every 30min for exmaple). If there was only a few emails per day coming in, there was very little awake time from the Email app.
2.I know the Android native Gmail app does push very well, but I don't like it as much, and it doesn't support Yahoo. (get it google doesn't support yahoo )
3. The Samsung native email app has features that I like: it's dark (black), it has a widget, it integrates very well with the rest of the i9300. So don't send me to use other email apps please. We will discuss this separately.
When I had the S2 i9100 it used to be quite simple (although in some isolated cases the push option was missing). For email accounts such as gmail, yahoo, hotmail there wasn't any problem to set it up to push email instead of pull.
Back at that time, Samsung was working with a service they called Social Hub . They integrated every thing inside it: instant messaging (gtalk, yahoo, msn), tweeter, facebook, etc. It was working pretty well.
A member on XDA considers Samsung is spying on us with this service - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007571
The idea with push was Samsung servers were constantly checking if you had email and only wake up your phone when you really received new email.
Let's say I don't care about Samsung knowing my password right now and I want push email back.
Now with the S3 i9300 and JB, they dropped that project. I saw no trace of Social Hub on the S3.
The bad thins is there is no more push option, only poll at predefined intervals.
There are users who advice on using Exchange to push gmail - thanks to Google because they offer this function for free. I tested it, it works, but it is not battery and data friendly. It keeps the phone awake 5min/8h only for the gmail account, when Samsung Email on S2 used to wake it up for less than a minute per 8h. And it uses much more date, about 10 times as much. I saw other complaints on this forum about Android-Exchange large data consumption.
Other disadvantages are that lack of support for Yahoo (I understand you need to pay to have Exchange support for Yahoo).
This is the Exchange app vs. the Email app:
Right now I'm using the Email app for my yahoo and gmail account with the best settings I found for battery and data vs utility:
-pull email every 1h;
-size to retrieve emails: only headers (back on the S2, pull brought me also some content and the data consumption was not higher)
[Q]How can you have push email with the Samsung stock / native email app? Not pull at certain time intervals.
I found an answer on another topic:
" The native email client does not support IMAP idle. It only offers interval polling. If you're on Exchange, push does work but only with the active sync protocol."
I hope there is a way around it because I don't like Exchange on Android.
I found an interesting post which shows that IMAP IDLE, even if it provides Push email without third party servers, is battery hungry
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27219447&postcount=34.
In the past I have benn trying out AquaMail for my gmail account. Event though it is a very complex and well thought app, I had it to use Imap Idle Push and the battery and data consumption is still high compared to Seven/social hub.
It still consumes about 500KB per night even if there is no email coming into my gmail inbox. In a similar situation, social hub wouldn't have had consumed anything.
