When I click OK, though, it just takes me to a list of applications, with no further guidance about which app it is. Anyone know what this is, what it means, and how to rectify it?

Is rooting the device the only way to get rid of this? Is there a way without root to disable this?
if you are with sprint, if you read the Sprint TOS that you signed when you got the phone it says that rooting will not void your warranty they just ask that u put it back to stock when upgrading or having service done to it. Who has ever went to upgrade their phone and the rep put it in to download mode to check something like that? And when I had my s2 rooted and needed service on the ear piece I just left cm 10 and all my stuff just the way it was and they never said anything to me about it.

I forgot to move my rooted tether app from my home screen and took it for service. The rep looked down, looked up at me, and went to a different screen to work from. Classic.
yeah, when I went to Sprint to have my last phone looked at, the rep asked me point blank if the phone was rooted -- but it was not in an accusatory way, it was more a "I need to know for the purposes of what I'm doing." Did not get the sense from the way she asked that it would have made a bit of difference to her in terms of whether they would still work on the phone.
As an aside, does anyone know what exactly could be causing the alert? It popped up when I was logged onto an airport wifi network, which gives me some concern.

How to use the 3g hotspot app for free
I looked and looked and didnt find this anywhere except for eclair and just got done doing mine a little bit ago as the steps are different now.
You used to be able to select dial up mode in wireless settings but now if you have the new froyo leak. Now you dial **usbui and change usb mode to modem. Plug in to pc fire up qpst add port once you see phone select start clients/service programming. next click read from phone, password should be typed in already as 000000. scroll over to m.ip and select the active profile, should be profile 0 and change tethered nai to [email protected] the phone will reboot and your good to go start tethering with apmode. Some may choose to reenter the usb modem settings and change it back to pda(the first step) but i do not see it as neccessary. If this has been posted by someone else already feel free to delete and if in wrong catagory feel free to move.
Just remember these steps are for FROYO leak anly not for eclair users although they may work for that also just dont have an eclair phone to test on.
I have done this for a long time and never encoured any charges although i am not liable for any problems you may come across, ive never had any. As long as your not seeing the verizon webpage when you access web via your phone then your set.
Any questions feel free to ask but i may just tell you to google it.

Why can't that file just be removed from the ROM? Would it cause the rom to just not work at all?
Forgive me for probably not using the correct terminology but does the mobile hotspot app handle tethering the same as say the wifi tether app? I just wonder if one sets off the flag to verizon where the other wouldn't.

It will break wifi if you remove the module. It ties into dhd.ko, the wifi driver.
Play nice everybody
Just got off the phone with Verizon. Been using the 3g hotspots for several days now tethered more then a gig so and I called and just asked if I was being billed for the hotspots app and they said there is nothing on my account about it that I've never had it and I would never be charged for it unless I actually signed up by changing my plan. So I'm gonna keep using mine. If anything changes I will let everyone know but I personally believe it is safe to use. I think that moniters for when you hit the 5 gig mark on your data then they start to throttle it. But this is just my opinion. But I think its a good one.;-)
Not to mention I've been using it for a pretty long while on eclair before froyo.
In fact I'm tethering right now to my gtab.
I have a couple problems with that.
First, if you admitted it, your account was likely flagged.
Second, VZW reps change their stories each time you call.
The monitor wasn't in place on eclair.

Does the same thing hold true if you wanted to use WiFi Tether for Root Users? Maybe this has already been answered, but I'm just looking for confirmation. TIA...

If it's any consolation, VZW doesn't have a flagging system, at least not one the frontline reps can access, so mentioning it on a call won't flag you. And the reason the stories change each time you call is because you might get a guy that's adept at what he does on the first call, then the next call you might get an outsourced moron from AFNI, and the next time get a person taking their first week of calls....
When you call, they are going to the features list, and looking for the feature called "Mobile Broadband Hotspot 2GB $20". Upon seeing it is not there, that is what they tell you.
What you NEED is a tech rep (like myself) to go into the back-side of the billing system or the switch, and check your records there. The switch will tell me if something is 'off' about your data, like if a rate limit has been added. The billing system will tell me if there are DUN (dial up networking) connections being reported. But, in all likelihood, the groups doing any kind of monitoring are **NOT** the folks taking your calls. They work in the switches or corporate, and their goings-on are a mystery to us that do take your calls. So, they could be minutely tracking each byte and I, as a tenured Tech rep, wouldn't have the foggiest idea what they were doing.
Just to share with you how 'in the loop' we in the call centers are kept, I had an engineer call me last week complaining that his test device couldn't authenticate phone calls. I asked for the number, and it pulls up a device listed as "Test Device 7". I asked for the make/model of the phone, and he tells me, "I can't tell you that, it's unreleased and classified". I then tell him, without even a brand, I can't create a new authentication key and give him steps to program it into the phone. He still wouldn't tell me anything, so I told him to seek help with the person that gave him the top secret phone and hope they can do my job too.
if the op wants to disregard the warnings and tether...then by all means tether...but theres a reason monitoring was put into froyo...and i cant imagine it was for our benefit...so meh

I didnt admit it i told them a family member had my phone and when i got it back the hotspot app was on my homescreen and wasnt for sure what they did with it. Besides even if they do charge me which i doubt they will its only gonna be 30 bucks. I can handle that to let everyone else know what really happens. But its just like people worryjng about sending back rooted phones with changes for warrenty replacements. I just wipe my numbers out and send it rooted boot animation changed everything even a custom rom and theme one time. They dont pay attention to the phones. They get them plug them in and flash them to stock. Just mt two cents. When i recieve my feb bill ill let you know whether or not i get charged anythjng for tethering.

That is exactly what it is homie. I had the same thing on my phone. I was able to find out when it was installed, then looked on my google dashboard to see where I was when it got installed. It happened at a bar. My friend Max borrowed my phone and went into the bathroom. Long story short, he thought I was bang'n his girlfriend. I confronted him, and he admitted it and let me see the other end of the app. Cool stuff as long as you're the one watching, and not being watched. It's from sms tracker agent. Look on google play. My device is not rooted to my knowledge but it definitely gets hot all by itself. I keep deleting the app from my storage and well it keeps re appearing. The crazy thing is my Dialer is always running and this device doesn't even have service. So any help would be Awesomely appreciated.

It is your app data on your google account, then possibly app data on Microsoft accounts such as one drive and one note. Then any other emails are suspect too. I had to change all three of mine because the app data and system settings that are stored kept coming back. Get a new device, and get all new emails and never ever go back to them. Do not even save your contacts. The data will transfer in your contacts.vcf file. Trust me. Abandon ship.

Hi, i have this file coming on all the time and i'd like to know exactly what it is . I've check property few times and once it was created in 1970 (??!!) So I don't think it is from instagram . I had to have my S2 replaced under warranty this week because of failure of the USB port. The replacement came with ICS 4.0.3 already installed. After a day of getting all my stuff moved over, rooting the phone, and re-installing all my apps today I went out and paired the phone with my 2012 Ram. My previous S2 has worked flawlessly with this vehicle since day one. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get my Outlook contacts to sync to the phone via Hotmail Connector, only the Google ones. This had been working for me prior on rooted stock GB. The truck had no problem pairing, but doesn't want to dowload the phonebook for some reason so I can't use voice dial and incoming calls are not recognized. Is there enough difference between GB and ICS to have caused this? I don't want to go back to GB, but this is a deal breaker. I don't really see all that much improvement with ICS anyway. I need my phone to work as it was.:crying:
Test gb and see

Pointless thread? I don't want to downgrade, I wanted to find out if anyone else had seen an issue like this or had something better to reply with other than, "Flash back and see." Sorry if I took up space better used by another clueless newb asking how to revert to stock or how to flash his Skyrocket.
FYI, I finally got the Outlook/Hotmail sync working (I would tell you how, but since no one cares...). Now to see if I can get my phonebook to download to the truck. As for Lekerstein, I really didn't want to be messing with the USB connector when the phone is still in warranty. By getting a replacement I also now got another month added to my warranty and an updated phone, so I'm good. Hope yours works out for you.

Yes and no. It appears that the original method that worked on GB for setting up MS Exchange sync of the phone with Outlook via Hotmail no longer works on ICS. I simply tried a different method and that was the charm that worked. The functionality is still there, it just takes a different setup method to get it to work.:good:

I'm not sure how long this has been going on but I was on a call to customer service last night trying to get the WatchESPN app running properly on my phone and the "tier 2" technician asked if it would be okay to take control of my phone. I've been in the IT field quite some time and I knew he was asking to remote into my phone (ala pcAnywhere.)
I gave him permission and quickly got a text message saying vdm (Verizon desktop manager?) was trying to connect. I'm rooted with Dubbsy's 4.2.2 GPE ROM and I was nervous about a Verizon rep snooping around my phone (warranty concern.) I'm not sure if it was the ROM or the fact that I was in a bad cell area, but he was never able to connect. We never did get the app to run properly either.
Just giving people a heads up about Verizon's (new???) capability; I've never had anyone ask me in over three years with the company. Careful rooted users, if they see you've rooted they may make a notation (with or without telling you) in your account and when you bring your phone in for service--it may get declined.
Pretty scary stuff. At least they can't get in unattended (we hope?)

Aetherpal teardown
Aetherpal can/does check for root access. There's two good things about this service. First, you can simply refuse the assistance from the customer support. Second, there's a terms of service you have to accept even if you gave permission for them to remote desktop. You can reject the ToS. I haven't had a TW ROM installed on my phone for a long time, so maybe someone else can post a screen of which .apk(s) they can freeze in TiBu.

Simply just need it replaced so I can properly charge my phone and connect it to my PC without it randomly disconnecting. So I call them and go to tier 2 to explain my problem. I do and the representative ask me to give them a quick second to see what the issue may be. I wait for about 30 seconds and to make a long story short, their diagnostic tool found my device to be rooted, so there was nothing they would do. So yes, when you call in with a problem, software or hardware, they do a diagnostic test to see if the device has been rooted. So I had to call back several times to get a representative who would not see the previous test done, and run a new one while I was unrooted. So now my account is clean but with a major headache. So XDAers, DO NOT CALL VZW FOR SUPPRT WHILE ROOTED. I WAS GOING TO BEFORE I SENT IN THE PHONE BUT THAT DOESNT WORK. UNROOT AND BE STOCK BEFORE CALLING. Hope this little story helped.
Update: Yes, they run the tool without permission from the user
Just had this same issue..tryed to play dumb...however...no luck..go back to stock then retry!!

Yep. I did and they retested. I'm just wondering how they can do it without customer permission.
I would have asked them to explain how they think a physical part of the phone would be damaged from a software aspect of the phone. The onus is on them to prove it.
Edit: I always call from another phone and make sure the phone I'm calling about is in airplane mode so there is no chance for them to connect to it just to be safe anyways.
What file do they use to access the phone? The my Verizon app?

I always call from another phone too, but my Note wasn't in airplane mode though. Gonna do that from now on.
Should try root cloak xposed module. That may help.

The my Verizon app asks for root access if you have Superuser installed and requests pop up. I've seen it myself once and wondered..... If I didn't have an app to notify me, would it have given that app root access silently? I bet it does.

ISIS app that comes bloated on the N900V also asks for superuser access. It also will not run on a rooted device. I'm betting if It wasn't rooted it would also have gotten access silently as does my Verizon app.
I thought it was common knowledge that, if you're rooted, you disable data/wifi when you're calling into VZW support. They can't connect to their little spy-app if there's no internet service. I've called into support and they've tried, unsuccessfully, to connect to mine.

I usually do the same. I did have a problem and had my USB port go bad. I took it to the store and they never noticed it was rooted.

I don't think so, I didn't have it installed. And I have denied root before on other phones. Also I can't use the exposed module because they can check your installs on your phone.
Towel root
So I just got a new refurb from Verizon/Assurion and found something interesting. One of the first apks I installed was the CM Virus Protection and scanned my phone. My phone is not rooted stock everything. CM scanned my phone and found a suspicious system exploit however though... Towelroot! I guess reseting the phone factory and even from Assurion somehow the previous owner had root, and parts of it somehow sustained. Weird that they would send out a phone like this if a simple virus scanner picked it right up on first try. Just thought id throw that out there.
I wish I would have seen this earlier. 10 calls in for reception, normally airplane mode and I forgot, bam. "Take it to the Samsung booth in best buy they can read flash the phone".....odin ain't helping this problem. Lmao
I just disable the my verizon app on all my phones so I never have this issue.
