Hi guys,
What is the best way to root this beautiful device? Currently my Z Ultra is using stock rom, I'm happy with it but I want to root so I can add on a few things like App 2 SD, titanium backup etc with the possibility of maybe adding on a ROM once development kicks off for Sony Z Ultra Roms.
When I had my Note 2, I backed up the EFS with the rooting tool as I was told this was where all my IMEI and serial were housed in case the device got bricked - Therefore, I want to find out what the same kind of thing with the Z ultra is. I've heard that you should back up the TA partition but that's for the Bravia engine keys if I'm not mistaken? Will that also backup the IMEI and any other important bits of info like the serial?
Long story short, I want to know what the safest way to root is please and how I can backup all the neccessary things so that if God forbid my device does get bricked etc, I can go back and still have a fully functional device.
Thanks all
HamzaB

It's safe. Use vRoot, and it'll be over after 10 seconds. It's also almost impossible to hard brick it unless you throw it into a volcano or something. You might soft brick it, like I did last week, but it's simple to get it up and running again.
One question though. Are you currently running firmware version 532 or 257?

From everything that I have read on this forum, VRoot does NOT appear to work with .257.
The only way to root .257 at the moment seems to be to revert to .532, root it, and then use a root-keeper while you do an OTA upgrade to .257.
that's correct, and you can revert your firmware without unlocking your bootloader, which doesn't void your warranty too. yay to sony
I promise you it's easier than you think.
It's also very easy to recover your phone. I got a couple bootloops and then I did something so my navbar disappeared.
I just re-flashed .352 -> 257 and that was that.
I love how easy it is.

Thank you for your reply and everyone else who replied.
I will follow the vroot method as someone mentioned on this thread, however, I've read to backup TA partition to backup DRM Bravia keys or something, however, how can I backup things like IMEI/Serial etc (things that were kept on EFS on Note devices)
Thanks

I'm not sure. I think there was an alternative, albeit much longer and complicated rooting guide back on 475 or something (that should still work on 532?). The rooting scene ain't pretty from now on. We don't have any other "one click root" solutions at the moment, so we're properly f*****, unless you want to give the vRoot people your information, like a lot of us have already done
The difference between unlocked bootloader and locked bootloader is that the unlocked bootloader is unlocked. Just kidding. I literally just unlocked my bootloader, and it allows me to install Recovery and flash custom ROMs like CM, PAC-ROM, PA etc. You'll lose X-Reality though, so you might want to think about it before you do it, but it's revertible (i.e you can lock it again) and get X-Reality back as long as you've backed up your TA folder!

Ah so you have to unlock boot loader for pretty much anything.
I'm not really interested in installing custom ROMs, I think Sony have actually done quite a good job, I only installed custom roms on my note because samsung was so bloated.
Do I have to unlock bootloader if all I want to do is add a few things like awesome beats, titanium backup pro etc? I don't want to install a ROM.
Hopefully someone somewhere comes up with a new rooting method soonish. Would even donate.
EDIT: In theory then, can I unlock the boot loader, install a custom rom, then relock it so I get x reality back etc?

You don't have to unlock the bootloader if you just want to root and install Titanium etc. You only need to unlock it if you want to flash a custom ROM. People are trying to find a root exploit in 257, but it looks like it's really hard to do, so we just have to wait.
And that won't work. You need to have Recovery installed to flash custom ROMs, and Recovery requires root.

before you go into sarcasm-mode and start posting lmgtfy links, I've read this and this, but I need more info.
So, what's to lose by unlocking my bootloader using the official method?
Unlocking with the Test Point didn't work and it's getting on my nerves. Every tutorial I've read, and every video I've watched, all followed step by step, word by word, didn't work for my phone, but that's not relevant now.
Most of the time people say TrackID and Gracenote Music Info services (which I can't use anyways) cease to work without DRM keys, but some members have reported otherwise. I don't use/buy/have DRM'd content so I'm not worried about that.
All in all, it seems I stand to lose nothing, and being able to flash whatever I want seems so damn worth a try.

ur ri8 dude!!!
INDEED THERE IS NOTHING TO LOSE AND UNLOCKING BY OFFICIAL METHOD IS FAR MORE SAFE AND EASY
Hell wid DRM Keys
Thanks for your input, bud :good:
However, due to a very restricted mobile data cap (no DSL/Cable here), I'll have to wait till tomorrow. Not because of the unlock procedure, it's just I don't have any custom ROM worth flashing at the moment, and most of them are 100mb+
Hopefully, more members will drop by and post some thoughts (yeah, thoughts, because there seems to be no end-all-be-all concensus on this).
Well i'll make also oficial one and after month of use still dont missing nothing.

This is my only "reliable" phone at the moment and I want it to stay that way, so CM10 remains a no-go until it's stable enough for a daily driver.
BTW, I don't feel like I'm missing anything from JB right now. Quite a bunch of it's new features are merely internet services (which sucks in my area). Don't care that much about Project Butter either 'cause my XMP is smooth enough already

I believe there's at least a slight change of retaining your warranty if you unlock it via TP method, since you can relock it while still having DRM keys intact, where unlocking with official method, you leave significantly bigger footprint (SE site + no DRM keys), and there's no way Sony will cover any hardware damage to your phone afterwards.
And about TrackID, i never used it, and I consider it nothing more than a bloatware
Nothing but this
Hi budd
1st :: DRM and S*** like that I guess can be replaced with SoundHound or Shazam
2nd :: As for Warranty ,hmm ,I unlocked my XMP 30 minutes after I bought it:laugh: ,Warranty is only for software or Factory building Mistakes ,it does't cover any hardware damage if it's done by you (I don't know if this is the situation in your country),so no need to it(as you're gonna pay to have it fixed if it got broken) ,every software problem is fixable be flashing a stock .ftf
3rd :: The only concern is This

But I think FlashTool Is more than Enough ,It can do the same functions as PC Companion and SUS ,and even have a lot more than that ,(+ a Log):good:
4th :: on the long term ,UnLocked Bootloader gives you a lot of Flexibility
Like U don't have to root after Flashing Stocks ,just flashing Kernels will do ,custom Kernels ,CWM ..... etc etc:victory:
Try Real ICS r5.2 with KrSH Kernel 3.0
Or Stock .431 firmware with MESA 1.6
These are great Mix I think:highfive:
Or you can Flash FXP-132
Happy UnLocking & Flashing
Now you can use trackID without any DRM on your phone. I agree with Un.Knowen trackID is garbage it could barely recognize my songs.
For my part I suggest real ICS lite r2 + KrSH Kernel V2! For stability and battery life
voyé dépi on ti SK17i!!

I just last week used the test point method to unlock the bl of my Mini (ST15i). I was having a ton of issues and totally unable to go through with it using the tool under Windows 7 but when i booted into Windows XP, was able to accomplish it in the first go, so that's a consideration as well. I'd still recommend you give it one more shot but only for the following reason, not the DRM keys

Real ICS is basically stock rom with mods installed... I have already almost all of those mods installed on my stock rom Also, i believe you can install RealICS on device with locked bootloader.
Only reason i would ever consider unlocking bootloader would be to put better kernel (better: i would expect at least 20% performance boost, and longer battery life), or perhaps some bug-free version of JB
Keeping a locked bootloader just for the sake of using OTAs and official updates is just silly IMO. It's not like Sony delivers updates faster than this community does, right?
Well, screw DRM, I'll do it tonight
I used test point method with omnius during free easter holiday promotion.
Managed to do it myself. Don't be confused with no indication or visible sign that test point is pressed. Just connect dot and sim card holder, remove connection, plug phone and send unlock by program. (from my memory). That's it. Yes and drivers.
Now I'm free (unlocked bootloader) and DRM still there. Best combination.
You loose repair with pc companion or updater also.

BIG NO
There are certain things in life which are not for everyone. XDA is one of them.
EDIT: Sorry I was thinking about bootloader while saying BIG NO. I goofed up here.
I have rooted before on an android with expired warranty so I know how to root. I was just wondering how unsafe it is for your warranty.
Odp: How dangerous is it to root an android.
I rooted my l9 soft bricking it 6 times during the procces i put CWM and non branded software. It worked OK but GPS broke
I needed to make it stock for the waranty repairs so i run LG soft for firmware update and chose emergency software recovery.
After some time i had pure stock l9 ready to ship for service center.
Right now i have rooted l9 (again) with working GPS
So unless you unlock bootloader you can revert to stock and have warranty.

Root = giving yourself administrative permissions. Similar to user control or run as admin, administrator access on windows.. except the programs are missing. You just add them, and control what's allowed or not. If you need to reverse, just remove the programs.. Simple.
If you give yourself permission to delete your files or edit the registry. If you don't know what you're doing you may render your OS unbootble or unusable.. same on rooted android..
More dangerous than Steve Irwin swimming with stingrays.... oh... wait...
Seriously tho, it's only as dangerous as your ability to follow instructions.

Oh okay Rooting 4.3 with a locked bootloader, cool
Are there any methods to un-root? as I havent looked and once im rooted ill un root and do a video of that, plus i have no need for root at this point

I successfully unrooted 532 by simply going into SuperSU and choosing to uninstall through there.
Not sure if the same applies to .290 - but I can't imagine why it wouldn't?

I think that's pretty straightforward - unless you get bored and want an additional video to add to the collection. lol.
I've been following the methods posted in the Locked BL rooted 290 thread - just not familiar with flashing to the extent I'd like which is why I was hoping for a video that goes through the process step-by-step from rooting .532, to installing recovery, to all the flashing and ultimately to having a fully working pre-rooted .290 ROM without any boot loops or booting issues.
You could technically start from the downgrading from .290 part if you wanted to make it a complete overview - but I think most people are able to downgrade from .290 to .532 without a problem - the complications arise when trying to go back to a rooted .290

I dont see why sony make it so hard. I had a galaxy S3 beforehand, a nexus 4 and even my older LG 2X just plugged into a computer, USB debugging and a piece of software and that was it
So, my little brother opened one of the waterproof flaps on my sony Xperia Z in the pool the other day. I would have been sad, but I saw it as an excuse to buy a Z ultra GPE. Luckily, a week after I ordered the Z Ultra GPE, the original Z started working again with no problems (despite the 3 red LDI's) but thats another story... Anyways, I've ordered the GPE edition of the Z ultra, and I'm having trouble discovering rom compatibility. I've had trouble finding any info about this in the forums so I thought I'd ask. Are the steps to root the phone the same? Do any of the LTE supported roms work? Do I still need to backup the keys so I don't lose things like the bravia engine?
TLDR: Xperia Z ultra GPE rom compatibility.
EDIT: I know that most of you with a vanilla Z ultra really want the GPE rom, so I should clarify that the only reason I'm interested is in hopes of getting a kitkat cyanogen or pac-man rom running.
Congrats, and welcome! You can root it by following these steps (jump down to "rooting GPe"). I'll be honest and tell you that i'm actually not that sure about the first question. I want to say "go nuts" with the AOSP ROMs (do not flash Sony ROMs), but i'm not 100% sure. I'm around 95% sure.
I think i'll summon @hamdogg @blueether @ChillyChan and @jackie099 and see what these guys say.

I assumed the sony roms wouldn't work. That alone made it a tough decision to chose the GPE because I really like some of what timescape has to offer. That being said, my biggest frustration with my Xperia Z (on T-Mobile USA) was that the bootloader was locked. As someone who has flashed custom roms/kernels on every android phone I've ever owned I really felt "stuck" on the T-Mo Z. Getting A GPE ensured I can have my fun. (Plus. You know. Kitkat.)
Here's CM11 for the GPe version at least.

I'm not 100%... but I think that a GPe will be fine to flash a Sony ROM... however I think that once you do you are stuck?!!?
Or perhaps that was because at the time there were no GPe ROM's available...
The steps to root the GPe are different. The kernel isn't the same as the Sony kernel, so to root will require a different method.
I've not investigated this so can't help.
Ham, I actually laughed out loud when I read the first part. Excellent!
Didn't someone around here say that GPe people shouldn't flash Sony ROMs or something? And CM has its own CM11 branch for the GPe, so I'm actually not sure what's true anymore
The rooting though is pretty straight forward, and the method in my guide is taken from the guy that dumped the GPe ROM when he got it, so that should work just fine.

I'm not a rom master, but I cant see why you couldn't flash any AOSP ROM (or even Sony, but I cant see the latter booting at all without some kernel work). Surly a AOSP Rom is only is only going to flash /system and boot.img, then you would just need to reflash @DooMLoRD's kernel/recovery (or better yet swapout the boot.img in the zip)
The questions are, are the partitions the same for /system /data and boot?

Hahah, you see? There are too many unanswered questions, so I'm not putting my stamp on anything in this thread
But I agree, all AOSP ROMs around here should work just fine, but why does CM have its own Togari GPe version of CM11? What's the difference between the XZU and GPe? I know there are some differences in the bootloader and stuff like that but...

maybe just because of the differing kernel and some of the low level partitions?
another question, could we use adb to dd the raw disk image to a normal ZU. yes I know that this is a failsafe way to brick the phone is you get it even slightly wrong...

Ok, so I'm am totally willing to help with development on my phone in any way I can. I LOVE the XDA community. If anyone wants to test roms, needs a system dump, anything at all I can help. Hell, I'd even let someone remote into my desktop to poke around in the phone over ADB. Anything that can help the community with this simply awesome phone.

Please don't assume things. I haven't seen a single GPe owner flash a Sony ROM, and I think I've read that it won't work. The difference between "yes" and "no" around here is around $600, so don't say that something will probably work, and then the other person will sit there with a brick in his hands, just because you assumed something.
Remember that this is a public forum, and people from all over the place are reading and following everything we say, so when you write stuff like that, little Timmy might take your word on it and do it - and then brick it.
So stop assume things, please.
(This might look like an angry post, but it isn't. Just be careful about what you say when it comes to high risk stuff)

I agree with LordManhatton here, and I was in two mind to post what I dad for that reason.
BTW it will flash, as the only check in the model # and the GPe ships with the same (c6806). Whether it will boot is another question, and will it write everything to the correct partitions is another and more serious question. Then there is can you get back to a real GPe once you have flashed non real GPe ROMs?
Too many ifs for me

I have a logic for the assumption and that is because the only chance that the device will be bricked is when the S1 bootloader is changed. As far as I know that is only achievable via ftf flash.
I said CWM flash files is because Rom files dun override that part and even it doesnt boot up or ended in a loop, you can easily undo it.
I did not advise any GPE device to flash via ftf because that will definitely end up as an expensive paper weight.
I hope my logic makes sense. We are all here to learn
So after reading every post, it seems that CM11 is the only ROM available for us GPE guys?

That we're aware of, yes But we still don't know if you guys can flash regular custom ROMs like the rest of us (PAC, Slimkat etc), so don't do that quite yet.
1.0 Introduction
This is a series of guides that will cover the basics of ROMs, kernels, recoveries, installation and so on. Questions asked in here will be answered as fast as possible. This is not a thread for unbricking your device, but rather to avoid getting into a situation where you end up with a bricked device. I do realise that the LG G2 is a year old, but since its price has dropped, it offers A LOT of value for money and while some people leave for newer devices, other people grab the G2.
1.1 Rooting
Let's cover the basics steps of rooting, installing a custom recovery and making your first backup.
If you do not know what root is, a brief explanation would be getting access to the root of your device. What that means is that you get access to parts of your device that are otherwise hidden - because the average Joe would not know what to do with root access and could possibly end up with a device that is unusable. As implied, there is a risk involved in rooting your device, although with the LG G2 the action is most often reversable.
Disclaimer: I cannot be held responsible for any damage you do to your device. Following this guide should be safe, but there is a risk involved
So how do you root your LG G2?
The absolute easiest way is to download towelroot. If your software version is 20G or newer, (or if towelroot doesn't work for you) try stump root. Link further below.
towelroot can be downloaded from towelroot.com
Click the lambda, download the apk file and install it.
If you get a pop up message claiming that the apk is dangerous, agree to it and continue installing. As previously mentioned, rooting IS not risk free, and this application abuses an exploit in the kernel.
After installing and opening, press "make it ra1n". That will root your device.
When finished, reboot. Then go to Play Store and download SuperSU. SuperSU is an application that will allow apps to gain superuser access and it is vital for any root user.
Now you have root and the ability to give SuperUser access to apps.
EDIT: For Software versions 20G and up, towelroot doesn't work anymore, use stump root instead.
Link is here: Stump Root for LG Devices
1.2 Installing a Custom Recovery
Why is a custom recovery necessary? It is, because it’s the easiest way (and often the only way) to get your device back and working in case you get stuck in a bootloop. It’s also vital for flashing custom ROMS and custom kernels.
How do I get one? Well, there’s an app for that!
Check out this thread to get AutoRec, an application that’ll automatically install a custom recovery to your G2! Credits go to @Cloudyfa and @bender_007 CLICK HERE
IMPORTANT!
MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT VERSION FOR YOUR DEVICE!!!!!!
After downloading, install the application, allow it superuser access and install a custom recovery.
When finished, reboot to recovery. You’ll need to take a backup of your working ROM.
2.0 Making a backup of your working ROM and vital partitions
Now you should be in recovery:

}
Tap “Backup”, and backup the following partitions:
Boot
System
Data
EFS
The backup will take roughly 3 minutes to finish, be patient. When it’s done, reboot system.
Make a few copies of the backup. ALWAYS have a backup on your device , keep one on your computer and one on a microSD somewhere.
Cheers for this...looking at possibly buying it soon. So I guess this will work even regardless if its a D800 or D802?

Yay I'm happy it could help anybody!
Yes it should, but it depends on which software version your D800 comes with. If towelroot doesn't work, IOroot or Stumproot should work Try this out when you get it - if it doesn't work, quote this message (so that I get a mail) and let me know.
Will do cheers. Yeah looking at buying a D802 from Hong Kong hy the end of this month, so no idea what kind of software its going to come with [emoji53]. Plus I want to install the G3 ROM onto it pretty much straightaway. Never rooted before but seems fairly straight forward.
should point out that autorec is for kitkat only afaik
also towelroot doesn't work on some of the later kitkat roms, but you can use 'stump' root instead

Great, looking forwards to that!
Towelroot does not show ROOTED in either dialer status RCT check or Download mode!
Yup it worked for me.
Ofcourse, I didn't take the root too far, only used it for the following:
Install SuperSU
Install Greenify/WLD/G2 Xposed
Later on, wanted to use warranty, and was a lil worried, but it seems undetectable, especially since I've deleted SuperSU and Xposed..
I did not:
Install custom recovery
Install custom ROM
So, anyone else considering using towelroot, but hesitating because of the potential warranty implications, this should help make up ur mind..
This thread is what i am looking for so THANKS alot OP. Really helped us noobs. Can You do TuTs(noob friendly) on 'How to install custom roms using Autorec' or kk based ROms or kernels to LP based roms and kernels etc kinda like that flashing basebands and all for LG g2 D802 ? Cheers m8
