Just got a G2, coming from a tweaked-out Gnex. Totally in the honeymoon phase, but I gotta say, this is a killer phone.
So, before I spend a whole lot of time on this, how much of the LG VZW crapware can be removed?
If you can't remove those apps, do you folks Disable them, or just end up living alongside them?
Thanks in advance!

Root the phone and remove with Titanium Backup
Did you search for g2 debloat? Seems like this topic has a couple dedicated threads already.
My SOP is to freeze and then test for a few days before uninstalling. I use Titanium and/or Root Explorer.

Yup - well aware of the rooting route. For now, I want to stay stock, but see if I can improve that a bit.

I initially had luck rooting and using root explorer to remove the apk's in the system folder. However, a lot of the custom roms come with the bloatware stripped off by default. That might be a way to go as well.

Yes - well aware of this. I've been a flash-a-holic for way too long on my GNex.
I am enjoying the notion of staying stock on the G2 - at least for a while. After being a "Pure Google Experience" dude for so long, it's refreshing to see so many creative ideas that some of the LG apps offer.
I'll probably just "Disable" some of the more obnoxious apps via the stock App Mgr for now.
The stock ROM even allows us to hide apps in the drawer without disable. The flexibility LG built into the stock ROM is impressive.
Sent from my VS980 4G using xda app-developers app
Yea I disabled. After a few days I just went in with root Explorer and deleted all of the Amazon and Verizon stuff. No biggie.
The stock Rom is slick though. I've never been on a stock from this long in my life. It feels like AOKP but with a ton of extra features. I miss center clock, but it doesn't warrant losing all the other really cool features.
Actually the AOKP team is taking note and trying to port lots of stuff over to AOKP. So what's that tell you about the awesomeness of this phone?

I have read through posts on this and MANY other forums regarding rooting my TB. The one concern I haven't gotten a SOLID answer on is what EXACTLY I will lose from my current stock TB. What I need to understand is what to backup before hand with the understanding that I am not rooted so backing up anything is limited.
Do I need to backup my contacts? Ringtones? Purchased apps? Emails? Pictures?
Will my purchased apps still be "purchased" and I just redownload?
Once I have completed the root process as described in:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616
Is there a ROM that is basically the stock Thunderbolt with the BLOATware removed?
If this is some highly redundant question and I have been too stupid to find the answer, please feel free to slap me.
Thanks for answers or derision,

There are quite a few ROMS that are basically stock just with the bloatware removed. Most of them will say stock. Contacts are for the most part anymore backed up on the Google servers if you are signed up. If you have contacts stored on your phone save them anyway to be safe. Pictures are stored on your SD card by default so if you have one they should be good. Emails are stored over the server and will come back when you log.in. Purchased apps will always show as purchased in the market. Just need to redownload. You are going to gain a lot of speed and memory from removing the bloated stock Rom. Usually fixes random freezing and reboots also.

Seriously though. After you root, make a stock backup in Clockwork recovery. Ringtones, pics, etc are all on your SD Card so you don't need yo worry about them. And as long as you ONLY use a debloated stock ROM with VW framework your purchased apps will be available for redownload.
Jcase has a fully rooted debloat ROM of the latest FROYO leak.
Enjoy!!!

I can download anything I have already purchased on any Rom, Das Bamf, tesla coil, CM7. I can even download my Droid X apps if I install the X market on my phone. The market you have installed is for a particular phone and only apps for that phone or universal apps will show up, if its not letting you download an app you bought on your TB then you have the wrong market, I didn't have that problem with tesla coil though. Any universal apps will be able to be downloaded from any phone as long as your logged in (but may quit working if you log into another phone)

Follow this and you'll be less likely to get a bad download and have a Rom act up (other than known bugs) I suggest try out the Das Bamf roms, I'm running the stripped version and its the best I have found.

My Galaxy s2 arrives Monday. Coming from a blackberry curve 8900 haha
I am definitely a noob to the whole rooting and flashing or whatever.
I had a one question that i hope someone can answer.
1) So i know the phone comes loaded with a bunch of bloatware from AT&T, and comes running all kinds of applications and processes that eats the battery, and i was wondering if there was a way to completely remove all of that stuff? I don't have the phone yet, but i think i want to keep the TouchWiz 4.0. (or what are your thoughts on TouchWiz?- should i keep or not)
I would like to have a clean install of Gingerbread with TouchWiz 4.0(maybe) minus all of the AT&T crap. Just a basic fresh "clean" install.
I don't think i want to run CM7 or some other ROM.. i think i just want to stick with the original stock android release since its my first android phone.
can someone give me some advice or lead me into the right direction with a thread link?
I really would appreciate your help and advice.
Root it get titanium backup from the market. It will let you freeze apps without removing them. They won't start up or be in your app drawer, but you can thaw them if you change your mind.

I understand. I do however know that i want to get rid of the AT&T bloatware and remove all those services that eat up battery.
To be honost the bloatware on the sgs2 isn't bad at all man. I've rooted mine and i'm still running the stock rom with entropy's kernel overclocked at 1.4ghz and undervolted -25mV. I'm getting 15-20hrs of batt. life with medium usage.
Also, half the bloatware can be uninstalled traditionally. For whatever reason they were nice enough to let us remove some of it which is good for people like you and I.
you will be pleasantly surprised with the battery life on this phone even with all the "bloatware" that is supposedly eating away at resources and battery, this is more hype than reality. And titanium backup is not the holy grail that some people say it is... And now Samsung let's you build folders where you can hide away those apps. Also check out launcher pro to completely hide them. What ever you do, give yourself some time with this phone before you do anything.

There are better ways, use Titanium Backup, or Bloat Freezer.
As a tip, you might want to do the common bloat first, then try freezing one by one of others. You didn't list what your daily life needs, so the list Kenjesse provided might take all that you use, or a couple things you use on a daily basis.
I personally would do app one by one, if you are unsure, disabling one might take others and disable them also.
Sooooo go one by one, and see what you gain and what you lose.
Good luck!

I tired searching for this answer via search bar, but no avail
So I am a recent switcher; been using all iPhones up from the 3G and I made the plunge into buying the Galaxy S III and I %100 love it.
But there is many things I do not understand. First what is flashing the rom and the point of doing so
Roms are custom OS's. since android is an open source platform , devs are able to take the OS and put in their own bells and whistles to make it better. Or to delete the treasure Trove of bloatware put in by manufactures own custom OS's like htc's sense or our own touchwiz

I'm a new user like you! Came from a Blackberry and I'm just starting to realize the amount of things you can do on Android. Quite amazing really.
I'm no expert, but the idea I get is that custom ROMs are custom OS that give you features and options above and beyond what the stock S3 ROM offers. There are many developers working on their own ROMs, you can check out the developer section for that. :3 But before you even flash a custom ROM you'll have to root your phone.

Most ROMs have the option to remove bloatware I think. Even if they do not, once you have rooted your phone and installed Titanium Backup from the Playstore you should be able to remove any unwanted apps.
Omega ROM is a good ROM that keeps the touchwiz interface. It's one of the ROMs that is closest to stock interface. Try googling for that.

If you're a noob don't do anything to your phone, there is a good chance you will brick it.
Just read forums watch some YouTube videos about flashing roms and what not.
Only then once you know the terminology, consequences of a screw up and general feel for things should you attempt to mess with your phone.
There is nothing wrong with stock, if you coming from Iphone first learn your Android inside out.
Don't be one of those asking if they need root, If you don't know what root is or what it does, you don't need it.
Rant over.

Ghost77 said it best!!
If your a noob, don't try to do something to your phone, if you do not know what you are doing!!
With that said, Samsung phones (except Verizon S3) are the easiest phones to root and flash roms!! Do your homework and do major research before you attempt to do anything. Look at youtube videos and carefully pay attention to what they are doing.
Also because you have a S3, make sure you follow and download the right files and roms for your particular phone. For example, use i9300 roms only for international s3, i710 roms for sprint and so on. If you don't know your model number go to settings - about device - model number.
Finally, like ghost77 said, stock is not bad! Rooting and flashing roms is for those people who want that little more customization and performance improvements. For the average user, they probably won't even notice a difference between a rooted phone with a custom factory rom and a unrooted factory device.
Well I already rooted, I installed setcpu what would be a good speed to optimize battery life but keep good performance overall

Everyone thinks that rooting your phone will void your warranty but if you watch this it states that under the "Magnuson Moss Warranty Act" Title 50 Chap 50 Section 2304 C) Waiver of Standards, it basically states that they have to prove that you did something to damage your device to void your warranty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YcIHaajda8&feature=g-user-u

It blocks you from disabling everything, but 90% of the bloat can be disabled. Pretty nice feature, had to do this to a couple phones when we got them.
Yeah, this is a feature of Ice Cream Sandwich, and I've mentioned it in a few threads. I didn't think it warranted its own thread, but apparently it did.
I'm not so sure it was a feature of ICS though. I have other devices with ICS and they don't have that capability. Maybe Sense on ICS? Not sure here.

Thanks for the advice, does this mean teh apps won't use data in the background, or do we need to get root first?
The apps are disabled, so no, they wont use data. Some of the apps are not able to be disabled though, so it's not quite as good as root, but a ton better than not having the ability at all.
Thank you! Just got this phone last week and all of bloat has been killing me!
Yeah, this was very helpful when I first found it. Of couse, I still removed the apps as soon as I got root. Sucks that HTC took the tool off of their site, but I'm glad I got in when I did.
