[Q] Χ10 Network unlock and flash custom rom STEPS - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody
First of all i would like to congratulate all those that have put so much time into developing and with the options they offer.
The problem is that, with so many posts and outdated programs, I mixed up and I have questions as to, which prog. should i use first.
I wanted to know the steps so that i can achive the title, in a 'virgin' SE X10a, locked in AT&T network. Can anybody clarify the right programs for the right steps?. Any extra short info on how/why would be great too.
STEPS
1st. Simunlock the phone?
2nd Root device?
3rd flash custom rom?

how to flash my touch dual and install a new rom

hi , i lwant to install a new rom on my device (niki is my first win mobile device), but i'm a really newbie and i dont know what to do to install it! Would u help me saying what i have to flash and to install the rom correctly on my niki (without breaking it ) ? I've read all the sticky and i've tried to search in the forum but i've not understand what to do !
Thanks a lot guys
me too =( so many thinks dont understand..
can someone explain us step by step how to flash the device and install a new rom (i want to try the new tom codon rom)?
Before you start anything,
know that you will void your warranty if you send in your device with a different SPL and rom that it came loaded with, you should know how to revert back for warranty reasons. If you dont want to risk anything, I recommend not continuing. If you are unsure read the threads completely until you are comfortable.
This is just a simple starting piont and not a guide.
Use this post to find the threads to help unlock, update your HardSPL and flash your rom. I know the ropes somewhat but I may be a little off, since I havent done this in awhile, but here is the gist of it.
First thing you should do is check to see what device you have.
To do this take you battery off and look for a model number (i.e. NIKI100, NEON200 or NEON300) This will tell you what device you have and what Roms are available to you. Niki100 is the most common
After that you need to find out if you device is carrier locked
and if so I beleive you need to unlock it. It wouldnt hurt anyways to have the device unlocked. This allows you to use your phone on any supporting network. These locked devices are generally branded by cell phone companies like Orange or Tmobile ect.. If you have a straight HTC device more than likely you are not locked to a network.
Next you will need to update your USPL or HardSPL
by following this thread by jockyw2001 - If you can not figure this thread out, you may want to consider not flashing your device because there is always risk involved in damaging your phone especially if you dont know why and what your are doing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355730
Now you can flash a rom that is compatible.
Check the Rom that has been developed for guides and read the all the post for problems before flashing. This is important because alot of the Roms may be a Beta meaning they have bugs to be worked out, plus it makes other user's happier that you dont ask alot of questions that have been posted before. Make sure that the Rom will be compatible with your device (NIKI100 or NEON200 ect..)
Please continue at your own risk, I can not be responsible for errors and bricking you device. I am just tyring to give you direction to start.
Hope this helps and good luck - Thanks

Complete newbie. Advice needed

Hi everyone, this forum is great and have seen lots things that I'm sure will be of use but having only ever had standard mobiles before I;m not sure where to start!
I've got a T-Mobile branded HTC touch dual which is unlocked to all networks but other than that it's standard.
I basically want to remove all traces of T-Mobile from the phone and set it up as HTC made it, or better if possible?
Any ideas or suggestions would be great. I've tried searching but don't know all the terminology yet so I don't know what I don't know!
Thanks in advance

Click stuff & read. Every phone needs a "ROM". You want a non T-Mobile ROM. First, Flash with HardSPL, then Flash new ROM. Then read Wiki about tweaks & crap like that. Viola. The key is read, read, read! We all have to do it too. Wiki is your friend. Wiki likes you. Wiki wants to play. Be one with the Wiki!

Android NOOOOOOOB

Ok guys so ive just bought a uk orange branded hero, and i dont have a clue about android or linux for that matter, so i hope you guys could answer a few questions for me, ive looked at the stickys in the android development section, and now im more confused than before lol
1) What is rooting? and what is the process ment to achieve?
2) like i said i have a uk orange branded hero, now what is the process i need to do before i can start flashing roms? it seems a little more complicated that just flashing hspl like am used to lol
root is the system administrator of a unix system. you might wanna google that if you don't know what it is.
depending on your fastboot version you need to flash the custom recovery image, from there on it is a piece of cake. if you don't need to downgrade your system then flashing the custom recovery is also a piece of cake.

My intention is to give balanced advice to all those who intend to modify their new Android.
Ask yourselves, what do you intend to do with root access, if you want your phone to do all simple tasks, no need to root. I would say get familiar with new OS before deciding "Root Way."

Rooting is the process of gaining full system access to your device. This has pros and cons (you can modify anything and really tweak the guts of your system...but you can also truely fubar the whole thing a lot easier too). If you don't have a need to root, I generally advise against it.
Flashing custom ROMs are an unsupported method of customization...but it, like rooting, has some potential gains. Some ROMS give more speed, some ROMs include more features that you may or may not want. Flashing ROMs are the reasons most people root (as to flash the ROM, you need root access)
Thanx for all your help guys, i read all that info and spent the last 2 days learning lol 2day i sucsessfully downgraded my rom, routed and flashed modaco 2.9
Goodlad!
Excellent. Now please tell our forum members which road you drove to get to root, so that someone with same enthusiam can also do same. You dont have to write whole page, just majot points and references or links.
Thanks.

[Q] Advice on Atrix 4G Root/Unlock/ROM

I know there are a thousand threads on Rooting/Unlocking and Custom ROM's for the Atrix, because I've spent the last 3 days reading every one I could find. However, most of them appear to be very dated and often conflicting. As I'm coming to the game a little late I was hoping for some assistance on how to proceed.
Here's what I have;
AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G (I bought this new under contract, kept it for 2 years, upgraded to another phone and this one has been a paperweight for the past 18 months) AT&T will give me an unlock code if I ask, but I'm a little confused by the conflicting reports on whether to do it this way or not.
It's an MB860
FW Version 4.5.141
OS Version 2.3.6
Baseband N_01.77.37P
Webtop WT-1.2.0-110_OLY-6
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
Build 4.5.141
I'd like to Unlock it so I can run a Foreign SIM card, I'd like to Root it so I can add non-approved apps, and I'd like to play with some ROM's, Redpill has some very good user reviews so I'm thinking of giving it a try but I'm not stuck on it.
Obviously don't want to brick the phone, so any advice would be appreciated, the more detailed the better
I have Windows 8.1, Mac OS X, and Windows XP-SP3 computers to work with.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
While certain threads are (or might seem) outdated and/or conflicting, there are also other threads that serve as a kind of index of the most current methods and procedures. That should help you get around. Plus there are threads and guides written especially for noobs...
Yes, the code from AT&T is the safest and simplest way to do SIM unlock. Only important point here is that the device must be running the official Moto/AT&T firmware at the time of unlock. I'm not sure what kind of "conflicting information" you came across, to my knowledge nobody who's used the code as described never had any problems.
As for rooting, regardless of the variant or firmware version of your device, the preinstall method is the one to use. By far the most universal, plus personally and generally I dislike any "automatic", "one-click" or similar methods - for me at least they are usually more trouble than they're worth.
As for playing with ROMs, you first need to unlock your BL, then install a custom recovery, and then you have a shot at ROMs. So quite a wide topic with plenty enough threads created on the subject, so no point in repeating what's already said countless times. By the time you're done with other things mentioned (SIM unlock, rooting) you should be able to find your way around.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've requested an unlock code from AT&T, should be good to go in 48 hours.
In the mean time, is it important that I have it unlocked before I root, or will it matter?
Update
I realize this may seem to be off-topic but I'm not asking for assistance with this newest update, I'm only using the experience to help clarify my concerns about the Atrix.
Waiting for my requisite 24 hours before unlocking the SIM on my Moto Atrix. While I'm waiting i decided to gain a little experience by rooting a Galaxy S5570 and installing a custom Rom.
Like the Atrix there are dozens if not hundreds of threads, videos, tutorials etc for how to accomplish this. I found the most recent one I could that seemed to be a complete tutorial and it was dated from January of this year (much newer than any threads I've found on the Atrix BTW)
Rooting went fine. Confirmed with a Root Test app.
Loaded a CWM 6.0.4.5 recovery package as instructed and ended up bricking the phone. By all accounts this tutorial was for the exact model of phone with the exact same FW and Android version.
This is no big loss as it was a cheap phone that I wasn't using anyway, but it certainly opened my eyes to the risks involved in attempting this procedure on the more costly Atrix.
I'd really appreciate if anyone could point me in the direction of a current procedure for Rooting, Unlocking the Bootloader and installing a custom ROM on the Atrix with the specs from my Original Post. If any of you have the same phone and had success following a particular procedure I would greatly appreciate some links.
I know how forums work, and I know there are always the guys that reply RTFM to every noobs questions, as someone with technical skills in other areas I can generally tell the difference between someone who just doesn't want to bother doing the Due Diligence and someone who is struggling to sort through the myriad solutions to find the one that's right. I really don't want to brick this phone so any pointed advice would be greatly appreciated.

Meanwhile you have ROMs all over the place here in the Atrix 4G section of xda that you are not going to go download, rather you are going to request a ROM for the phone instead. Head over to the development section and download a ROM instead of requesting the necessary resources that are already available to you.

[Q] Carrier unlock upon installing new ROM on Xperia X10 Mini Pro?

Hello!
I am newly registered here, but I have been around for some time, and I love the forums and all the help one can find here. So I decided to register in order to ask for some help as well...
I searched for this, but I am not sure about the results that came up so let me ask it directly:
I have an Xperia X10 Mini Pro and, as it is getting a bit old, decided to experiment with custom ROMS. So far everything is stock and unaltered. And the phone is carrier locked to Vodafone. Will this lock be a problem somewhere along the way? And how exactly can I (if possible) unlock it while having a new, custom ROM in it?
I'd like to try out the "MiniCM7Pro - V21". Can I refer to this thread as a reference? Or, taking into account that I am starting from scratch (unaltered and carrier locked phone), is there a better place to refer to?
Thanks in advance!
Best regards!

Just keep in mind that the thread you linked is for the X10 Mini (not Pro, i.e. without the sliding keyboard). I am not familiar with Mini Pro, so I don't really know how much of a difference there is in the process, but make sure you find information that is relevant and applicable to your specific model...
