Nexus 5 bootloader on the G2 - G2 General

Has anyone tried using the Nexus 5 bootloader on the G2? The only reason why I ask is because I own the Optimus G, and the device was fully unlockable because the LGOG devs used the Nexus 4's bootloader. Since the G2 and Nexus 5 are similar just like the LGOG and the Nexus 4, i think it could be plausible if this worked. I would definitely consider getting a G2 if this worked.

What would you gain over our current method?

I don't see a reason if it's already unlockable?

It would allow us to pretty much just flash nexus 5 roms

I guess technically the bootloader is by-passed and not "unlocked"
Not sure if it makes a difference?

I read somewhere that the boards are actually different between the Nexus 5 and the G2, so I don't think it will be as easy as it was for the OG/N4. They both shared the same board type if I understand it correctly.

The bootloader on the G2 isn't unlockable. Rather, it's easily bypassed. Either way, if it was somehow possible to do what the OP is suggesting, it would be fantastic.

They did it in the optimus G/Nexus 4 a long time ago. But to be fair the Nexus 4/Optimus G are a lot closer in every way than the Nexus 5/G2. It's funny because I've already got 4.4 running on my GFs Optimus G with almost no problems.

Bootloader Unlock Petition- Please Retweet, sign, and send to LG

Retweet this https://twitter.com/xboxfanj/status/263413673643630593
And send this to all applicable LG support channels
Why are you alienating the development enthusiasts with your Optimus G? It has unparalleled hardware, but the locked bootloader makes it a tough sell for myself and the development enthusiasts at XDA, RootzWiki, and many more sites, and it also makes me unlikely to recommend it to my friends and family who go to me for advice on their technological purchases (and people who go to other development experts around the world). Samsung has unlocked bootloaders. Motorola and HTC have unlockable bootloaders. Now, it's time to step it up, LG and follow suit. I know you don't want me and millions of people like me to buy from your competitors. So fix it!
I really want to buy your Optimus G and have the beautiful design and amazing S4 Pro processor, but if I have to forfeit that to be able to use my phone how I would like, that's a sacrifice I am willing to make.
There are 1,310 people and counting who have signed this petition asking for an unlockable bootloader, so get your act together, LG.
http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...opportunity-to-unlock-bootloader-in-lg-phones
This could propel you ahead of Samsung, Apple, and HTC, since your hardware at the moment is by far the best, but your software, updates, and developer support are lacking. An unlockable bootloader would end these complaints and make hundreds of thousands of people more likely to buy an Optimus G.
And don't forget to sign this petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...opportunity-to-unlock-bootloader-in-lg-phones
Together, we can make LG change.
Together, we can make the Optimus G a better phone.
Let's unite and make LG unlock those bootloaders, just as consumers have made HTC and Motorola do the same.
This too: https://twitter.com/xboxfanj/status/263415788218753024
And send that to their other channels as well. The more people that send this, the more likely it is that LG will acquiesce.
Here is the response I got from LG's email:
------Reply to Your Inquiry-------
The bootloader is locked, Jake, at the Carrier's request I'm afraid.
If you are looking for a Developer device, however, then you can look forward to a device that Google should be announcing sometime this week.
So sorry about the inconvenience this has caused, and I hope you have a great day!
That's BS since Sprint, my carrier, doesn't have any locked devices.
I told them that and haven't heard back yet.
Yes! we need this to get in the google search rankings, so android owners (non lg) can even participate. If anyone has some clout with any android news sites, etc, please flex that muscle!!

The minute after it DOES get unlocked, LG gets some of my money. Of course, the Nexus 4 is right around the corner, but I figure buying this model is the better long-term acquisition because of the massive upside.

Locked bootloader eh? That's a deal breaker.
And if they do unlock it eventually they'll probably impose some method of being able to tell it's been unlocked, like my Vivid's "relocked" text if you relock voiding any chance of a warranty claim if it breaks.
Bummer. Really figured this phone might be better than the nexus 4 since it's pretty much identical but has more storage, an sd and lte. If it was unlocked, you could pretty much make it a nexus with no compromises.
Also pretty pathetic it only has 4.03 on it. What's with manufacturers releasing new phones with outdated oses on it?

Thinking about it, to replace my Galaxy Nexus. But since Ive never touched an LG smartphone Im not sure what (if?) the status of "third party" development would be like. Ive also never seen their overlays over Android so Im not sure what Ill be in for.
But, Snapdragon 800 makes up for some of that

I'm picking up the LG. I've had all HTC 's and Samsung's. I'd have the Optimus G PRO for a couple months and loved it. It was a tremendous phone. IMO. I just hope the development community come through. I think with it being on all carriers it will.

Will be my first LG since the Dare - if that counts. I usually sport a Samsung or Apple but am currently running a Lumia 928. WP8 has a long ways to go! Looking forward to the G2!
I've had every HTC Android that Sprint carried, but switched to the Nexus 4 in February, so the G2 won't be my first LG device, but it will be my first LG device with LG software on it. I'm looking forward to this phone.
Just pre-ordered it, I have had my HTC Amaze 4G for a bit now and the LG G2 will be a huge leap, in terms of specs! lol This will be my first LG experience! Hope for the best!
I've used the Charge, GNex, Rezound, Maxx, DNA, S3, Note 2, Maxx HD, and the S4. This will be my first LG. I'm not too worried about the bootloader being locked down. The navigation keys are movable and most of the other things I'll want to change can be done just by being rooted,
first LG here since the LG env touch lol. my smartphones were all htc and samsung... eris, incredible, rezound, gnex, s3, dna, s4...so this is my first LG too.

Could you please share your experience about

Screen quality
If possible open a new thread for AT&T phones(just a suggestion). Just so all AT&T experiences fall in one place. Developers can figure out the missing features too.
I am going to switch from my note 2. I really love my note 2 but the size after a year is starting to get to me a bit. 5 inch screens look funny to me because of them being narrow and tall and I love the bigger screen in the small form factor. Great specs and great size. I will miss my note, but the lag, crappy gps, terrible amoled screen, and the slightly too big size are starting to turn me off.

So after using it a bit, do you feel like you want to pick the S4 back up or are you totally satisfied with the G2.
Personally I cant remember the last time I was so excited about a phone. I remember when I went to the S4 from the note 2 and I really just couldn't get excited about it at all. It didnt feel like an upgrade.

So um.. I'm leaving (possibly)

Yeah, hi there. Some of you might know me. Due to my unfortunate experiences with this device (mainly my seemingly impossible bootloader that I've tried twenty different ways), I'm considering getting a new device. In particular, a Windows Phone. I hate Microsoft and I really like Android, but I'm willing to drop a few hundred dollars on a WP after this. Due to the bootloader on this device, there isn't much for us to develop and contribute.. Other then help others with the bootloader. Everything seems to be about that and helping people who messed up the flashing. So I just wanted to say that I might be leaving soon. I'll still be here if you need anything ^-^

I just left the L9 for the G2, and It's night and day. Seems like LG has no problems listening to users for the top shelf phones, but could care less about the mid to low end ones.
Yeah the G2 is beautiful. I'm not sure what phone I'll get next but I'll be sticking with the android camp. Was fortunate to unlock the bootloader. I didn't have a choice but to get this one, and if I did, I probably would've chose the Nexus 4.

I hear you
My model is unlockable but mine specifically i never succed in unlocking.. My new phone is already comming, a Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE. I'm not sure i will install any custom ROMs but at least i will have the chance to try them on. Right now i'm stucked with L9 locked and ICS. Really desapointing. I hope soon all phones will have an option to the user to unlock their bootloader, because HEY, I WANT to lost my warranty and install anything i want, its MY phone, right?
Thanks for your contributing with us along your L9 lifetime. Good luck next time for us all
So you hate Microsoft and love Android, and you will buy a WP. Nice logic there
Jokes aside, the fact that you had a bad experience with an unlockable bootloader doesnt mean that every other phone will be the same. Also with WP you wont be able to change anything aside from the color and the size of the tiles, which is very sad. Just go with a Nexus or a investigate a bit about the scene of the device before you buy it. I had a Moto Defy with locked bootloader before my L9-P778g (which i unlocked very easily) but i even managed to make a ROM for it by myself. Heck, it even haves more ROMs than the L9 with an unlocked bootloader... So you should not be so drastic and chage a restricted device for a even more restricted one with a restrictive OS....

Exactly this. ANY android phone manufacturer will lock their bootloader upon carrier request. Samsung does it, HTC does it, Sony does it, Motorola does it. That's what I've heard but the seller Breed gave me this response.
"No, the original settings for the phone is locked settings, unlocking it bypasses those settings.
However, if any updates or upgrades are made, it makes the phone go back to original settings, which would be locked settings."
Would it be safe to use a teenybin or should I leave my phone alone?

I agree, and my phone LGOG has the bootloader unlocked, is carrier unlocked, rooted, and is running a custom rom. However, there is much less development for the LGOG then for many other phones. I would suggest getting a Nexus 4 since it is almost the same exact hardware, similar price, and receives A LOT of support from Google. But, this is just one opinion. If you really like the LGOG and like developing for it then that is your preference and I certainly respect that.

Potential Upgrades for VS980

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone in this forum for creating and supporting development of the G2. LG may not support this phone anymore, but this forum holds strong. That said I am investigating potential upgrades for the G2. I would like suggestions. The following phones will not work:

- Phones without strong developer communities
- Phones released more than a year ago

With the state of hardware right now any device released within the past 3 years is still a good device. They will handle anything a new device will. Could look at the moto droid, Not really sure what else verizon has to offer really as there is no Verizon in the State I live in.
Even if LG had dropped support before releasing lollipop, the G2 could still handle 99.7% of everything you throw at it smoothly.
Compare the G2 to new devices. You have 1080P which looks great and doesnt drain the battery. 3000mAh battery, more or same as latest devices. Compare snapdragon 800 to 808/810 and you will only see a good difference in benchmarks. 5.2" screen thats neither too big nor small.
LG did great on the G2, if not too great since upgrades to this day still dont appeal.
Enjoy your G2 and buy something else
