As some of you have noticed, the HTC Get More Widgets button started working on 03-25-2010. These widgets are only for 2.1, and only work on the 2.1 OTA leak, and roms based on it (As far as my tests show).
I take this as a good sign that the 2.1 is coming any day, otherwise the distribution server would not be working.
One of the main thing devs will be needing/wanting is the source code to our new kernel, which has not been released. HTC is not known for being fast on the release, and I would like to start a campaign to get the code released. I have internal emails, internal phone numbers and some twitter accounts of employees. I plan to carpet bomb them with requests upon official release.
If this plan does not work rather fast, I will be recruiting others who are willing to POLITELY ask for our kernel source.
Update will be coming.

Hopefully it works. Politely asking them is the best way to do it. Hope they understand what the leakers are going through,XD
Just as with last time... I'm down to send some scripted emails to HTC for our source
I mean, I gueeessss I could come up with something on my own if need be.
I'm running leak and Get More doesn't work for me.
HTC Widgets work for me!
if copy protected app suddenly show up, that would be a sure sign but those may not appear till the actual release day...
Jcase - let me know if you need any help with sending those emails.
For those who are still seeing, "Unable to download widgets. Tap to try again.":
1. Settings>Applications>Manage applications
2. Find "HTC Widget Download Manager" which is pretty far down in the list.
2. Clear cache. Clear data.
3. Try again.
Might have to clear cache for HTC Checkin as well.
To any devs monitoring this forum
PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE root the 1st leak. I'm sad because I updated the first day the leak was available and now I can't root.
Is there any way to cook a ROM so that the Sense widgets could be used in the 2.1 vanilla/N1 launcher? If so, happiness

I think I am gonna just wait it out. Why F up my new phone...
It works for me just some nonsense widgets available, battery, daily challenge, notes, profile, ringtone and tip calendar.
I would like to see the clock and weather on the nexus one launcher.

The battery widget is a little nicer than Battery Widget (from the market) imo, but I agree, this is all useless haha.
i am beginning to loose faith in this 2.1 update OTA. They said the first quarter of 2010 and tomarrow is the last day of it. if the eris does not get the update i'm going to buy either a moto droid or the incredible coming out
I have a feeling we will be waiting another couple of weeks. Verizon is supposedly rolling out the 2.1 update for the Motorolla Droid starting today according to Engadget as of just a few minutes ago. Seeing as the Droid seems to be of higher value to Verizon it would make sense that they would roll out the update to the droid first and follow up with the Eris.
Hey guys so i just got a shipment notification so I'll be picking up my touchpad tonight.
Where should i start?
Install Android? I'm very comfortable with Android.
install another operating system?
Good apps? Games?
Looking for a good browser.
Basically any recommendations for a touchpad noob I'd appreciate.
Thanks a lot
Congrats!
Honestly, I would try out WebOS for a while. I was surprised how much I liked it. I haven't bothered to install Android (this coming from an Android phone and Nook Color with CM7). For starters, do a system update to get the latest WebOS version. Then, make sure everything works (ie. don't go and void your warranty right away ). There are some free apps you may as well peruse and download in the HP App Catalog.
It's not really necessary anymore since the latest OS update brought a lot of performance improvements, but you may want to check out the Preware patches once you're satisfied with the hardware.
I don't think there are too many other OS options yet aside from CM7. However, ICS, Ubuntu, and Windows 8 are all good possibilities in the future.
FWIW, the stock WebOS browser is so-so. There are a few patches to add some features, but it's still a sore spot compared to all of the options on Android (why can't WebOS get Opera or Dolphin?!). That said, it does handle most pages very well.
Thanks for all the good info!
System updates, are those done via computer or ota?
I assume most software changes such as adding cm7 can be undone for warranty purposes?
I have cm7 on my desire hd so i should be able to use wifi hotspot on my phone and pick it up on the touchpad?
Usually i like to do a bit more research on a device but i got caught up in a $99 black Friday sale so i panicked and bought
The system updates can be done OTA. I believe you can do them through the computer too though if it's easier, or you run into any issues. There is an app/settings pane in the menu to do it.
For the most part -- yeah you should be able to revert to stock if you need to. I'm not sure what breadcrumbs all the patches and CM7, etc, leave behind, but it should be possible. There's something called WebOS Doctor that should be able to restore as well. That said, HP's support has so far seemed incredible for a discontinued product, so it might not even be a problem unless the mods really did break it.
I think wifi tethering should be ok, but I can't say for sure. I think there is a thread somewhere around here about that or ad-hoc networking.
Lol... I know what you mean. I bought mine during the fire sale weekend with barely an idea of what I would do with it.
So i got my new toy last night. Everything is working good. Did the system update on webos ota. Seems like a pretty cool OS. I did find it slightly laggy though while scrolling, surfing, loading programs. I also installed cm7, only took about 10 mins and it's an OS I'm more comfortable working in (plus i needed dolphin browser for proper tabs, i wanted to pull my hair after surfing with the Web OS "tabs"). For being in alpha stages i must say it's very usable.
What are some reasonable expectations on battery life? Webos or Android, standby or "heavy" use?
All in I'm quite happy with my initial testing, especially for the price!

Dear ROM Devs,
I just wanna throw this out here before rooting season is open: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE USE SUBVERSION! I kindly ask you all to host/mirror your ROMs on a SVN friendly site such as Google Code for the express fact that it sucks redownloading (and reuploading im sure) ~500mb file because of something like "Changelog: Made a buttload of tweaks that will make your phone be able to run Battlefield 3 on ultra at 60fps AND it will end world hunger AND solve the oil crisis AND if you die it will give you a 1UP!!! (Video proof on first and last! Middle two, just watch the news later!)
Total size of changes: not even 2mb
New ROM Size: still over 500mbI know it sounds like Im whining about nothing, especially those of you with your T1 lines or 50mbps broadband that can download a The Avengers Blu Ray rip, both seasons of MLP: FiM @1080p, and Battlefield 3 (since you thought the video proof was faked and want to test it for yourself) all at the same time and at the speed it would take to toast a poptart with a blowtorch. But it would be a godsend for people who have slow/unreliable internet or only have their data plan and especially for those who are deployed and still trying to feed their flashaholism (such as me) where it literally takes atleast 5-7 days to download a 100mb file with the fastest sustained speed being ~6kb/s, with a ~1 hr downtime every 3-4 hours, not to mention constantly dropping the connection even with a download manager. And also you could set up an automatic commit to upload any changes every night or week or whenever AND instead of having to check the thread every however long, all you would have to do is right click the folder, click SVN update, ???, profit! (LOLZ)
So anyway, theres my argument please consider it. Thanks.
TL;DR: Please host your ROMs on a SVN site so people with slow/unreliable internet connections can download them faster and plus its easier for Devs and flashaholics to keep updated. Thanks.
I don't have this problem but I do hate waiting x amount of time to reflash everything not sure of this method you posted never did it before that I know of but it sounds awesome

There was a guide for it posted awhile back
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-use-svn-a-comprehensive-guide/
ckoadiyn: it takes literally 5 steps to set up and 3 to update
1- download and install tortisesvn
2- right click and click checkout where you want it to download to (ie desktop)
3- enter the url to the trunk
4- press ok and let it download
5- zip it up and flash it
to update,
1- right click on the folder and click update
2- wait for it to update if necessary
3- zip it and flash it if it updated
edit: i think you misunderstood, it doesnt make an update folder with only the changes, it updates the whole project folder, which i think is better because there might be some unforeseen problem with only flashing parts instead of the whole thing or something, idk. its still better to download 5mb of updates then wait for the whole thing to flash than to download another 500mb for a 5mb update if you still have to flash the whole thing either way.
the only way you could make it a "changed only update" is if you picked out what was updated but that would probably be more trouble than what its worth and like i said might result in some kind of issue.
xHausx: the problem isnt using svn, its getting those who arnt on it to be on it such as eternity infected 3.5, newts one s, and others
That sounds awesome
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
If you have eclipse installed you can also use that, but for a ROM it's probably a lot simpler to just use tortisesvn
I'm feeling stupid now. I have no idea what TLDRBsi or what trunk is (I'm guessing base directory?)
What is wrong with goo.inside etc? Unless I'm misunderstanding the entire point of this thread.
sent from 2yr old Evo on ICS
its ok it stands for too long didnt read lol
and yes the trunk is the base directory, the "/" placeholder of the rom if you will so you dont have to download data, system, sdcard, etc by themselves and to keep them in one place (ie x:/trunk/system/, data/, sdcard/, etc)
goo is fine except for the problems plaguing people like me: slow, unreliable, constant connection dropping internet, not to mention limited bandwidth
i could deal with waiting slowly and patiently but if (when) the connection gets interrupted or dropped then the file is useless and im back to square one minus the amount i downloaded from my allotted bandwidth (do the math too, even if my connection would stay perfectly reliable but just slow: [6kb/s] / 500mb = 23h 40m = OMFGWTF)
and of course jdownloader doesnt work on goo, devhost, androidfilehost, and others (100% offline, file not found) im guessing because theres not plugin to handle the countdown or something
basically my logic is this: dl rom: 500mb, dl updates: 1/5/10+mb at a time > dl rom: 500mb, dl updates 500mb again
see what im getting at?
Wait Sense roms are 500 MB or more now days?
the one in particular im referencing is "newts one s" w/ ics 4.0.3 + sense 4, 508.83mb
and that number is sure to climb when downloading for newer devices like the one series/evo lte
yes there are the cm9's and such that are less than 200 or even 150 but the problem still stands with the connection interrupt/drop = waste of time and bandwidth and having to start over
maybe im reading to much into it.. but wouldnt it be just as easy to see " changelog : i tweaked the menu options" and go .." ok i dont care about this update, so im not going to download it" ? rather then just downloading every update? these guys work for pretty much free they can upload it to a dialup site for all i care
yes but i was just saying that to make a point
it would be more relevant for the ~50mb updates or ones with a ton of changes or flashaholics who must stay on the absolute freshest build (like me)
and plus that 1up thing sounds really handy
*wtf magical double post*
i'd jump on board with a standardized process but to support a kernel, rom, and now svn is a pita on a developer....sounds good in theory but in practice i can just see it being a nightmare...if some one were to make some good guides and support those guides then i wouldn't have a problem using it
just remember some ppl that flash roms are not the sharpest spoons in the drawer.
SVN is a pain in the ass, but I suppose I could live with it for someone deployed overseas
Based on a reply post in SamMobile regarding the official rollout for Galaxy S3 I9300 I9300XXUGMJ9 4.3, I'm reposting the reply quoted here since I have exact experience for what they wrote:
This can’t be an official 4.3 update, this is the exact same Vodafone Germany leak that SamMobile released 2 days ago, and this is obviously unfinished and unpolished.
For instance:
1. The lockscreen has many bugs and does not look and/or feel finished, here are some things I’ve noticed that bring me to this conclusion:
a. 4.3 does not have shortcut icons and does not give any way to activate them, yet 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 leak did.
b. Light effect is not working, it’s the same as if I selected “None”, yet the 4.2.2 leak had the Light effect working.
c. The Ripple effect is also the exact same one from 4.1.2, the 4.2.2 had an updated Ripple effect.
2. The amount of battery consumption is brutal compared to even the 4.2.2 leak which provided me over 24 hours of use, this one gets me 10 hours tops.
3. Memory management is also too high which tells me this is not finished software.
4. Calls drop for no reason even with full signal.
5. The phone becomes irresponsive at times, in fact, it got so bad for me today (about 40 secs without waking up) that I had to pull the battery.
6. The phone takes way too long to wake up from deep sleep and prompt to unlock… This must be linked to the 5th point.
7. The Touchwiz launcher, camera UI, S Planner (4.2.2 leak had a new S Planner), S Memo, Weather widget, 4×2 dual clock widget (4.2.2 leak had the new look with new fonts) are the same from 4.1.2. Let’s face it, these are just apps, all but the camera app had mere facelifts, it’s not like they will increase the RAM usage to levels that only phones with 2GB of RAM will handle… I’m pretty sure this is a test build that was missing memory management optimizations and could not add these apps before getting that solved.
8. KNOX is not present in this ROM, and though I don’t want it or miss it, this makes me believe that this is still unfinished.
This is what I’ve spotted, and with what I’ve learned from flashing ROMs and rooting, this is definitely not finished software, and I doubt that a corporation such as Samsung will half-ass such an important update for the 2nd best selling device, especially when this is supposed to add GALAXY Gear compatibility.

I'd like to add the following notes:
1- I agree 100% with the quote above and I face exact issues and I have exact notes.
2- The I9300XXUGMJ9 leaked Vodafone Germany has exact file size of what's claimed to be VD (Vodafone) Ireland and Swisscom (Switzerland) official releases. Without need to download the official roms, it's obvious that exact file size refers what's in the package.
3- I never noticed any of the carrier users they got what's shared online for such uncertain releases
4- Most of shared snapshots for the *official* releases are the same for the leak.
Would we share experience regarding this matter with confirmations or negations for what we think?

I agree with you hands down. The 4.3 update hardly can be called as an "update". It has many bugs and it's pretty unstable. I would like to see the whole UI and at least half apps, settings from S4 ported on the S3.
If this was true... Then how did Samsung release the sources?

Any confirmation from users of claimed carriers got that is shared everywhere as "official"?
Sources come after release only, so it has no choice other than being official.
This is as official as it gets. This is the first official 4.3 build, it's bound to have some bugs. You can seriously not expect a 100% bug-free OS upgrade. That is stupid.
What you also need to see is that this update provides Galaxy Gear support, it makes a lot of sense to release the update before Christmas to try to boost Gear sales, They could have also decided to remove things like the light effect, only people who flash leaks know that this was working on the S3, not your average user, the same with the newer ripple effect. They could have also decided to remove the shortcuts for some reason.
2. We have not had enough time for a battery consumption test, battery drain is always higher initially whilst it syncs a lot of data and scans for media.
3. Stock memory management has always been terrible, I have not seen anything more than a normal stock update.
4. I have never seen calls drop out.
5. The only time I have seen it take a while to respond is waking up (most of 5 secs) as we all know about (could be down to a rushed update to sell more Gear)
6. See point 5.
7. When did Samsung say "The 4.3 update will give the S4 apps"? never, they just said we would get them sometime.
8. Again when did Samsung announce 4.3 would bring Knox? Never.
The poster from Sammobile hardly knows what he is talking about, he takes rumors as confirmed facts.

+1 thumbsup for these ! and for those who need s4 there are some custom roms that u feel s4 look ! and just be contented what u have !!!
RUNNING OS: 4.3
CUSTOM ROM: S4 revolution v8.0
ROOTED
The only source release is the kernel, isn't it? the kernel could be ready but not the rest.. i doubt that also but..
I want to believe this is not an final official release and there are some things that make me thing i'm right.
- The CSC is the same in Ireland than it is in Germany..
- The Ireland official version brings some german apps that are installed after the first install / first time running android...
- Try playing MP3 on Google Music Player while the screen is off (Partial Wakelock).. IT STUTTERS AFTER A WHILE !
- There are options that are on the menu but they don't work.. Try setting the light effect on lock screen.. The option is there but nothing happens when you set it on..
- The battery consuption is really high. I've been on my 3rd battery cycle after flashing and configuring and it is wasting 10% per hour!!! Almost 10 hours only with just wifi on and wifi sync on but used lighty.
- 4.2.2 leak was way more functional and stablet than this and it had options that now are missing. That makes no sense.
Do you really believe an official irish version would bring german apps? Do you really believe that samsung would release an update to its best selling phone ever that don't even plays MP3 without stutters? I don't
I'm willing to bet that there was some kind of mistake or someone played a "prank" on Samsung.
This is not an official last version for the best selling android phone ever... iTS not!

Uh? The kernel source is the ONLY source that leaves Samsung. The only workable source, that is.
Maybe they released the source so someone else can fix this turd of a ROM
it's not Irish
I don't know if it's an official release, it doesn't look like it is. For me the screen doesn't lock at all.
But I'm pretty sure it isn't Irish at all. All the Vodafone bloat wars is from Germany and not even Samsung or Vodafone for that matter, is going to release such thing.
Like I said, of you want to believe that it is official, do so. But that it it's not Irish is a fact.

You see companies rushing things for Christmas a lot, not just Samsung, they have a once a year opportunity to potentially sell millions of Gears in a very short time, so why wouldn't they rush it?
Also I am no fanboy, I will not be buying Sammy again, I just see what they have done here.
Please bear with me on this - it will end up with me asking which rom to use (so, mods - if you must delete it, I've been honest up front) but I do have a specific need.
I have had my S3 since August 2012. It's been on Android 4.1 until the recent update to 4.3. All that time I have been really unhappy with the performance. I've not rooted it or changed any kernels/roms - I've been a good boy and stuck with Samsungs TouchWiz and their interpretations.
But the performance is diabolical. It can take 7 seconds (I've timed it) from when I touch the phone icon on the main screen to when the number pad appears so I can actually phone someone. Sometimes its quicker - but never less than 2 seconds. Other apps are equally as bad.
I have tried everything I can think of to speed it up. I've got no animation (I've enabled developer mode) and done anything I can see to try and make it work at a reasonable speed. I've even done a complete wipe and reset and re-loaded my apps - no difference.
OK, you say - but what are you running? Well, not much. I use my phone as a phone, to check emails (my works email, so I have to have Afaria as a security app) and to read Kindle books. Occasionally I will use it to surf the internet using Dolphin. I have a 16Gb microSD card with my music on it which I listen to when I am in the gym. I've put on MicroCPU Monitor so I can see if the CPU is clogging up (it's not). That's about it. I don't play games.
So, now we come to the question. Is there anything I can do without putting a new ROM on to make it work at what I consider a good speed? If not (and here is where the mods will get me), which ROM will give me speed? I'm not after fancy features, I just want a ROM that makes my phone work like a phone - not a lump of electronics with a mind of its own. [I do know how to root and upgrade as I have a Nexus 10, Nexus 7 and an HP TouchPad]
I would appreciate some answers or at least ask me more questions that I can go and investigate.
Thanks for any advice.

Maybe this Afaria thing is causing the problem. It is a security app, so maybe it is running scans, checks etc on the background.
Since you are unrooted i dont know how you can check if it is the culprit... maybe checking your battery statistics can give an idea.
Other option would be to start fresh. Root the phone and install whichever ROM you like and check the performance without installing your apps.
Then install the apps one by one and check which one is the culprit.

Alan

You could try two things.
First: root your phone.
Second: find and apk called Seeder, this apk increase your phone speed reducing the lag and really works.

Thanks for all the replies.
So far, I have done a hard reset and loaded only AI keyboard plus (my favourite keyboard). I'll have a look at Seeder as well.
