Model GT-i9300
Current Android version 4.1.2 (Stock samsung)
Baseband: I9300XXEMB6
Kernel: 3.0.31-1160235
Build: JZO54K.I9300XXEMD3
CWM recovery 6.0.3.6 installed, and root access.
Im planning an install of cm-10.1.3-i9300.zip and gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip (CyanogenMod 10.1 stable) and it's my first installation of a custom ROM. Im also new to this forum, and customs ROMS in general, the last couple of days I have been reading alot of forum posts, stickies, trying to learn this.
Now I don't wanna do anything wrong and brick my phone or make EFS folder unreadable. So I have some questions ..
First, I have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035141.
But.. Im having trouble understanding, if I should do someting about EFS or not.
Will this ROM make my EFS folder unreadable? If so, what can I do about it? If I must, do I flash v2 before or after I have installed CM?
I have already backed up EFS with EFSprobackup.
As I can see I have EMB6 = 2013 Feb Rev6 which is "v1"?
You backup your EFS at least twice in case of EFS fail .

Yes it is
Done and done.
So what you are saying that i should just flash, and if it doesnt work with GSM / SMS / MMS afterward, I just restore EFS and it should be OK?
Put one on your PC as enough have wiped the backup from the phone .

Done that, but do i restore after ROM install? Will that work if ROM changes the EFS folder file system, making it unreadable?

Dont touch unless you get EFS /IMEI problems if you do see EFS/IMEI faq.

when I flash this 'official' ROM, 4.2.2 leaked official XXUFME7
it changes the IMEI to 0049990xxx...,
and so I get only emergency calls allowed for the phone...
the rest looks ok, but I reverted to last 4.1.2 -
I am on O2 monthly contract - is that a problem?
otherwise, even though it lost phone capability, everything else seemed cool...
any idea around this without having to fiddle trying to restore the IMEI back to original...
when I flash back the last official released 4.1.2, the IMEI corrects itself...
a guru at O2 finds it weird... LOL! and said O2 does not support flashing with Odin, only through Kies...
Please Read one of the hundred other threads saying that you need to use mg4 modem since the latest released mg4 4.1.2 rewrites the efs partition.

If I understand well to successfully get the modem working with the 4.2.2 official Samsung leak, from
KIES_HOME_I9300XXEMG4_I9300OXAEMG4_1314436_REV00_u ser_low_ship.tar.md5
to

one needs the additional step of flashing the modem file

please kindly confirm...

I sorted it...
this is how:
1. rename I9300XXUFME7_I9300OXAFME7_I9300XXUFME7_HOME.tar.md5 without .md5 extension i.e.
I9300XXUFME7_I9300OXAFME7_I9300XXUFME7_HOME.tar
2. in Linux delete modem.bin from the resulting .tar archive
3. flash, with Odin 3.04, I9300XXUFME7_I9300OXAFME7_I9300XXUFME7_HOME.tar (that had modem.bin removed)
This will keep the correct modem.bin of KIES_HOME_I9300XXEMG4_I9300OXAEMG4_1314436_REV00_u ser_low_ship.tar.md5
and so solves the problem...
and all this can be done without rooting...

Hi,
We have a sticky thread all about IMEI / EFS issues. This is because if you do a search here now, you'll find literally hundreds of threads all about the same thing.
Please go to:

Downgraded from JB 4.3 to 4.1.2 - IMEI incorrect - I have a backup of EFS
Hey guys! I know there are some posts about this, but I could not solve it yet.
Firstly I did a backup (copied to exSD) of the /EFS folder, then upgrated from JB Stock 4.1.2 to JB 4.3. Everything worked well.
Then I downgraded from 4.3 to 4.1.2 and i got my imei with 0049... and serial 00000... and it can't connect to the network.
I followed the 9 steps recover imei manual, with the backup thatI have, but it didn't work.
I checked the problem that happens with Modem MG4 that changes the EFS partition format, but now i'm using stock JB 4.1.2 so thats discarted.
I noticed that when I copy or create from backup the nv_data.bin, and restart the device it seems that android OS overwrite the file with the one that has 0049.. any ideas about it?
In Service Center want to charge me $180 for restore my imei but I think it's ridiculous cause I have a backup that is supposed to work.
Please guys help what could be wrong?
Details of my device:
Galaxy S3 i9300
Jelly Bean 4.1.2 Movistar Ecuador Version.

Just because you're using "stock" now doesn't mean you haven't had a rom with mg4 before. You can't undo that. Try all the steps in my thread. Repair is about £20 so.....

I really didn't notice what was the baseband of the stock rom that I did the EFS backup so I guess it could be an MG4...
So I'll try everything again with a mg4 rom.
And yes in my country costs from $80 to $120 to recover the imei.
Try unofficial service centre

What could happen if everytime that I restore the nv_data.bin file from my backup, I reboot the phone, then I notice in the efs log that a default nv_data.bin was restored? And still getting 0049...imei I checked this with mg4 modem and older too. ideas?

Stickied faqs and guides read ask in EFS/ IMEI post
Hey
Before you ask I have read the info on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289 regarding this issue but either it doesn't work or I am not executing it properly (probably the latter) and I'm not sure what is going wrong.
Here's my situation. I flashed Android Revolution HD 32.0 with XXUFME7 firmware (which I believe is later than MG4) and have the "no service" problem due to corrupt efs folder. After panicking because I didn't backup my efs folder I flashed back to unrooted stock via Odin and hooray, everything was working again (signal and registering on network). So then I rooted (and it was still working) and used EFS Pro to make a back up of efs folder. I then reflashed Android Revolution HD 32.0 and restored the efs folder but it still didn't work
Could someone give me any advice on how to rectify this problem? I think I might be doing the wrong thing with the efs folder. I'd quite like a TouchWiz ROM so would like to get this one working.
Thanks in advance for any replies
ME7 is older than MG4
Suggest you stop at the point it was working and read the basics .

I did say that I've already looked at that link but didn't know what was going wrong. However thanks to JJEgan I have sorted this out. I was assuming that ME7 was newer than MG4 because Android revolution 32 is after 29 but ME7 is older! The stock rom I flashed (without making a backp of efs) was MG4 and so this is why it wasn't working when flashing the ME7 rom. I switched to adnroid revolutoin 29 which is MG4 and it works fine now.

hey i'm reading guides in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344125 to understand s3 more
but i have a question about mine ( sorry for being rushing in but i do need to change my phone these days )
my s3 is on leaked 4.2.2 israel , i need to flash back into 4.1.2 stock EGYPT ( or any good custome ROM ).
when i flashed 4.1.2 EGY before it made " restarting bootloader ". so rootSU told me to make factory wipe.but it didnt work
while am reading i found that restarting bootloader is a good sign that my phone isn't brick ( note : its working normally but the leaked ROM 4.2.2 having alot of issues ).
what should i do , please ask me for what u exactly need to know of info about my phone so i can provide and fix this.
(( do i need to just wait for 4.3 official release )) ?
thanks in advance

efs is not related to rooting or custom roms mate. it is related to the network connection and your imei number. you need to back it up and keep safe so that if you face network problem after updating the phone to the latest 4.1.2, that might help you restore. refer to the thread under my signature for any queries relating to efs/imei.

Good afternoon all,
I apologize if this is a duplicate thread but i've spent the better part of the past week trying to find information on this. I have CM10.2 installed on my GTi9300. Initially i had Touchwiz with 4.1.2, I created a backup in CWM and then flashed CM10.1 and then upgraded now to CM 10.2... I really would like to go back to my original TOuchwiz and as i previously stated, I have a backup of the state before installing my initial CM...
How do I go about doing this?

i have not used cwm in a long time . also never on this device but it is usually safe to wipe cache and dalvik cache. probably fine to wipe data if your backup is on extsdcard. i would not wipe system though . in case your backup is corrupted wiping system will leave you with no rom. if you have the option to restore backup from cwm recovery than try that . if your phone doesnt boot usually factory reset will get it to boot. good luck
