[Q] am trying to understand s3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey i'm reading guides in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344125 to understand s3 more
but i have a question about mine ( sorry for being rushing in but i do need to change my phone these days )
my s3 is on leaked 4.2.2 israel , i need to flash back into 4.1.2 stock EGYPT ( or any good custome ROM ).
when i flashed 4.1.2 EGY before it made " restarting bootloader ". so rootSU told me to make factory wipe.but it didnt work
while am reading i found that restarting bootloader is a good sign that my phone isn't brick ( note : its working normally but the leaked ROM 4.2.2 having alot of issues ).
what should i do , please ask me for what u exactly need to know of info about my phone so i can provide and fix this.
(( do i need to just wait for 4.3 official release )) ?
thanks in advance

i really wanna make it to the factory state so i can backup nandroid and save my phone so i can start trying

efs is not related to rooting or custom roms mate. it is related to the network connection and your imei number. you need to back it up and keep safe so that if you face network problem after updating the phone to the latest 4.1.2, that might help you restore. refer to the thread under my signature for any queries relating to efs/imei.

[Q] Quick question regarding ROM and Kernel backups

Hi,
I've been searching over the forums for the past few days and i've been thinking of rooting my Samsung Galaxy S2 and i've got a few questions, yes i've been searching around for them and I still find i'm confused, if there is a logical answer somewhere else in the forums I apologize but i've not been able to find the answer.
1.
Chainfire's rooting methods seems to be the easiest methods to do so for the
Samsung Galaxy S II I9100
I'm worried that if the phone I recieve tomorow is the i9103 model it won't work. Wondering if someone can confirm this for me.
2.
Custom ROM's and custom kernels compliment each other and I can't wait to load them onto my phone when I finally recieve it.
But is there a way to backup the original ROM and Kernel that I recieve just incase there are hardware faults with my device and I need to hand it in with the warranty i'll have to load the original ROM and original Kernel somehow?
Is this possible?
3.
Will the USB jig as shown in a thread on this forum work specifically for the i9100 device or will it also run for the i91003 device.
Sorry if I sound a bit paranoid but I'm just worried about my warranty, but at the same time I wish to use the EPIC creations on this forum. Hopefully you guys can help me. Thanks

Dont know what a 19103 is .

Yes if you have a backup of the rom or have a copy from the branded rom post in dev section .
#Failing that a flash of stock Samsung rom will remove root .
3.

If you have taken the steps to backup your original firmware and know how to remove root etc then you are starting from the beginning as opposed to many who try to find those answers afterwards .
Also check out the backup your EFS thread and or Nitrality app in the market to back up the IMEI via EFS folder in dev section .

[Q] EFS / Flashing ( Doubts )

Hello mates
This is my first post on s3 forum and i have some doubts
I bought my S3 yesterday sim locked in between i got him sim unlocked via cable.
My doubts ... Is on 4.1.1 and i want to flash clean stock 4.1.2. Can i flash the rom safely via odin without the risk of flashing screw my IMEI or re-lock my phone?
Should i backup efs (if so .... whats the best efs backup method?) at this point and then go for it
Or theres no problem in flashing a stock or any other rom?
Thanks
Ps: my phone is rooted used cf root.

you should deffinately backup you EFS, there has been many post's recently with people buggering up their imei's - did a search :silly: and found an app called ktool which backs up your efs folder, I've never used it looks like it does the job. Also make a backup of your current rom you're using. just incase.
FYI you will lose root if you flash a sammobile FW via odin
I know about that ... I'm new on s3 not new on flashing
i'm just afraid to corrupt efs

Sorry for being thorough! I've only flashed samsung so wasn't sure if it was the same as what you're used to! In answer to your question then. Yes backup your efs, if there is a chance of it ever being corrupt its best to have a working copy. No brainer really!

al i want know is the safest method to backup efs?
did u backed up your's? if so ... using what?
That app I mentioned will work just fine, I also copied my efs folder to my extSD and then compressed it to zip, then I copied it to my pc. It would then just be a case (if it ever fubars up)copying that folder back over to /system/
Apologies if I was rude, its my bedtime
Thanks a lot gonna backup it up tomorrow and flash stock by odin now its my bedtime 2 take care mate

Well, you surely should have a look at these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377731
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300071
I'm pretty sure anything that concerns this thread will be already answered in there.
These are also useful, and a must read (before any sort of flashing, any ROM download page will indicate so):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240291
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2148708
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362743
In the last thread, especially this:
Provide details - ALWAYS tell us exactly what happened if you are requesting help. Always describe in detail what is happening.
"Flashed my phone now it doesn't work" is useless information.
"I rooted my phone 3 months ago and flashed a custom ROM. I decided today to flash ROM X from recovery Y. I booted into recovery and flashed from my internal SD card. I rebooted the phone and it is not starting up. It is looping at the boot animation" is GOOD information. We need to know What, when, how. We need to know if you followed a guide and which one (links where possible)

[Q] i9300 IMEI/EFS issue after flash

Hey
Before you ask I have read the info on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289 regarding this issue but either it doesn't work or I am not executing it properly (probably the latter) and I'm not sure what is going wrong.
Here's my situation. I flashed Android Revolution HD 32.0 with XXUFME7 firmware (which I believe is later than MG4) and have the "no service" problem due to corrupt efs folder. After panicking because I didn't backup my efs folder I flashed back to unrooted stock via Odin and hooray, everything was working again (signal and registering on network). So then I rooted (and it was still working) and used EFS Pro to make a back up of efs folder. I then reflashed Android Revolution HD 32.0 and restored the efs folder but it still didn't work
Could someone give me any advice on how to rectify this problem? I think I might be doing the wrong thing with the efs folder. I'd quite like a TouchWiz ROM so would like to get this one working.
Thanks in advance for any replies
ME7 is older than MG4
Suggest you stop at the point it was working and read the basics .
Basics read first.

I did say that I've already looked at that link but didn't know what was going wrong. However thanks to JJEgan I have sorted this out. I was assuming that ME7 was newer than MG4 because Android revolution 32 is after 29 but ME7 is older! The stock rom I flashed (without making a backp of efs) was MG4 and so this is why it wasn't working when flashing the ME7 rom. I switched to adnroid revolutoin 29 which is MG4 and it works fine now.

Because I am a fool! And in the panicking mode I was in I didn't think why G = July and realise that E = May and simply went by the release dates of the roms. Apologies to all for this silliness!
No worries. One piece of advice (which can be hard to follow).... never panic. It's hard but important

[Q] First time CyanogenMod 10.1 and EFS folder

Model GT-i9300
Current Android version 4.1.2 (Stock samsung)
Baseband: I9300XXEMB6
Kernel: 3.0.31-1160235
Build: JZO54K.I9300XXEMD3
CWM recovery 6.0.3.6 installed, and root access.
Im planning an install of cm-10.1.3-i9300.zip and gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip (CyanogenMod 10.1 stable) and it's my first installation of a custom ROM. Im also new to this forum, and customs ROMS in general, the last couple of days I have been reading alot of forum posts, stickies, trying to learn this.
Now I don't wanna do anything wrong and brick my phone or make EFS folder unreadable. So I have some questions ..
First, I have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035141.
But.. Im having trouble understanding, if I should do someting about EFS or not.
Will this ROM make my EFS folder unreadable? If so, what can I do about it? If I must, do I flash v2 before or after I have installed CM?
I have already backed up EFS with EFSprobackup.
As I can see I have EMB6 = 2013 Feb Rev6 which is "v1"?
You backup your EFS at least twice in case of EFS fail .

So what you are saying that i should just flash, and if it doesnt work with GSM / SMS / MMS afterward, I just restore EFS and it should be OK?

Done that, but do i restore after ROM install? Will that work if ROM changes the EFS folder file system, making it unreadable?
