GPS issue - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I'm having GPS issues with my i777. It doesn't want to lock to any satellites it seems. I tried all the GPS fixing apps and non of them seem to do the trick. When I'am on AOSP ROMS I can forget about locking to a satellite, however when I use touch wiz based ROMS like sho stock or the stock ROM I still have an issue but after I use the 3rd party apps I get a weak lock. Does any one know what is wrong with my phone?

I got that depending on the ROM, Android base, Kernel, etc. etc.
And to throw in anecdotal evidence: I've had really good GPS locking performance with Shostock's3 v.4 and CM 10.1 stable (stock kernels). Unfortunately that means you'll revert to either 4.1.2/4.2.2 but overall it's been a better daily driver for me.

Yeah, same results here. It's about what you're willing to give up really- newer versions of roms or better GPS. I choose to stick with newer versions of roms and just manually pin-point where I am. I'm getting better and better at it. It's not ideal since I have to interact with it so much, but it works well enough for me.

ROM usage

I noticed a thread about "The best ROM"...When I recently purchased my gTablet, I was wondering the same thing. I realize that best is subjective and started to do my homework on finding out what works best for me. I am not sure I found that, but I do like the ROM that I currently have, so best or not, I am happy. It occurs to me though, that others will have a similar question. From people who have used more of these ROMs than I have can we put together a list of ROMs, and what they were built to do?
Like anything, there are compromises, and developers need to make decisions along the way. They can chose to optimize this or that, perhaps not both due to some constraints, time, resources, etc. So, I guess I am asking, what ROMs are optimized for what?
Is there a ROM that plays games better than others?
Is there a ROM that plays video better than others?
Is there a ROM that is screaming fast compared to others?
Is there a ROM that allows for more customization that others?
I do not know what the exact criteria is, or what people are looking for from their tablets. I bought mine as a toy. I wanted to play with it and muck around (something I was not willing to do with my phone, well because it is my phone and if I broke it, I would not be happy).
I think that apps were the most important thing to me. I wanted a ROM that was stable and could play lots of apps. I ended up choosing the VEGAn Gingerbread ROM. I know the camera does not work for anything. I believe it has issue with videos, but the apps work great. I am good with this combination.
So, again I ask (after dribbling on and on) what ROMs are optimized for what?
really, the biggest diffierences are the interfaces, but honestly, changing the launcher can accomplish a GUI change in just about any rom.
essentially, there are 2 Android versions available for a stable rom, Froyo (TNT Lite, Vegan 5.1.1, and Calkulin I think, never used it, so I'm not sure) and Gingerbread (Vegan Ginger, and CM7). There should be major differences between Froyo based roms, and Gingerbread based roms. One similarity between them is that they are both designed for phones, not tablets. Changing a launcher will help give it a tablet optimized feel.
I currently use Brillian Corners (1.2 based Vegan 5.1.1 Rom) with Launcher Pro. I use Launcher Pro simply becuase I like the customizable LP widgets. VTL Launcher (a custom version of ADW, basically) is a Launcher that's been modified for tablets.
In addition to the roms themselves, there are custom kernels, that optimize the performance of the machines. Pershoot and Clemsyn are the foremost experts in custom kernel development and tweaking.
So, you can choose a rom based on your needs...as you mentioned, apps. Vegan 5.1.1 worked well for me, to run apps. I had flashed Clemsyn's kernel to run with it. I could still watch videos if hte need would arise, and the camera worked...but honestly, how good can a 1.3 MP camera work on ANY rom...
Anyway, I then flashed to Brilliant Corners to move to the 1.2 dev branch. Roebeet discovered that pershoots Adam kernal already worked, so he had him port it over and include it in the install. So, now, I basically have the same exact setup I had before, only on a 1.2 dev branch for future flashing ease.
I'm running LauncherPro, since I didn't much care for the VTL Launcher's lack of widgets.
Vegan Ginger and CM7 wouldn't work for me, since I do need video support, to keep the 7 year old busy when I want him to calm down.
In any case, customization is the key. You can have any rom, with any kernel, and find what works for you.
The only Rom available that is specifically designed for tablets is Honeycomb. There is no official version, and I didn't include it as an option above becuase it's still in Alpha stage. I wouldn't recomend it for anyone that wants an everyday Rom. It's mainly good for people that want to test it, and assist in the developemnt of it. Once all the bugs are worked out, OpenGl drivers are found, and it's tweaked for optimum performance, then it's a no brainer to go to it. It's made for tablets, it's powerful, and with the correct video driver optimization, it will be, by far, the best Rom available.
This is why I try to encourage people to go to the 1.2 dev branch if they plan on flashing a "legacy" Rom like TNT Lite, or Vegan 5.1.1. If they go to the 1.2 equalivilent, then they are halfway to Honeycomb when it get's ironed out.
if you plan on sticking with Gingerbread, then by all means, stay with 1.1, and use Vegan Ginger or CM7.

[Q] please share your 4.x Daily Driver ROM

Looking to Flash a ROM for the first time on my Atrix. I want a ROM based off of either ICS or JellyBean (ie, 4.x).
I don't want to test out unstable ROMs. I only have one smartphone, so it needs to be reliable. Are there any 4.x ROMs that are stable enough for daily use? If there isn't, please tell me that.
Requirements:
Reboots no more than 1, maybe 2 times a day
4.x build
all hardware works, except for these things which I don't care about: fingerprint reader, laptop dock
Nice to have: in-car mode.
AtrICS looks nice, (video works, fingerprint reader works) - but lots of posters are saying it reboots on them.
They all have the same problem since they use the same kernel.
- They all have the reboot problems
- Camera has fuzzy lines on the Blur based ROMs (can be easily fixed by turning widescreen mode on/off)
I'm currently on Someone's CM10 and I think that it can be a great daily driver (I don't use my Atrix to call/ SMS anymore though, so I can't really tell) and it doesn't have fingerprint scanner and web top (both of which you don't care).
And as I typed this, my phone rebooted.
Sent from that Atrix.
Even I'm in the same boat. Been on CM7 since ages.. waiting for a stable release before jumping the wagon.
Hopefully, epinter or jokersaxx will adopt the new libs and new stuff to their mods and we will get a new ICS/JB daily driver.
Im using miui 2.10.12 by thebill currently and no reboots. I dont play games dont use lapdock or fingerprint. Only bad thing for me not working buttons backlight
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Your choices are the unstable ones with poor battery life based on the leak with everything working or the ones not based on the leak which are stable with good battery but no camcorder and flakey hw acceleration. Pick your poison.
Hopefully the project to port the Xoom kernel goes somewhere and we have something more solid, but until then if you want something flawless you should stick with gingerbread.
Since your new to custom ROMs, I highly recommend you check out mrom. Its based on cm7/Gingerbread, and the best non-4.x ROM for the atrix. Coming from stock I think you'll find it a noticeable improvement in terms of performance.
Sent from my #motofail. No ICS for 2011 AT&T flagship? #boycottmoto
This is good info guys, thanks, MROM looks really interesting. I guess I'll unlock my bootloader now,
Just started this game too. I need a daily driver for my only phone to use for business and personal. I don't use fingerprint or laptop (except as a charging base/alarm clock stand). Although I would love to be able to use the laptop again someday. This my opinion based on limited experience with the following ROMs. This is in no way a knock on any of the fantastic work the Dev's have put in any ROMs, merely my experience.
IMHO
Somebody's- great JB ROM but too many random reboots and to short a battery life for a daily driver on my only phone, chrome works because hardware acceleration works. ROM didn't work for me but I really wanted it to because it was sweet!
Cyanogen 7 Stable- Rock solid, great battery life, dependable but not much different than stock except for the ability to play with root access, firewalls etc. I know iti's not 4.x... but as a daily driver it's fantastic work
Epinters - Wow! JB, video chat, battery life in the 8-9 hours with daily use for email, phone, music, text, light internet and gmaps (result may vary), no random reboots... no chrome due to lack of hardware acceleration (i think, but may be wrong here). Overall his was the best for my circumstances. Of course mileage may very depending on your phone, mine is USA, ATT with apparently the right tegra part. I have been running it for 2-3 weeks and keep coming back to it for a daily driver.
AtrICS - too many random reboots but another great JB ROM, really wanted this one to work too
My opinion - Epinter's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781970 works for me. I am very happy I unlocked/rooted and started playing this game.

[Q] "original" roms?

Hi all,
I'm sort of new here, so I hope I'm abiding by all the rules... I believe I am
I've only recently rooted my Samsung Galaxy S3 (international) and have been using Omega for a while now and I'm running 33.3 atm. So not the one based on CM10, but the one based on the stock rom.
I've now reached a point where I'm feeling that I've been there and done that. So I'd like to try a new fresh solution. I've been looking at CM10 and ParanoidAndroid, as these seem to have the largest user base, based on the number of posts here in XDA Developers forums in their threads. However I'm unsure if either of these are right for me.
I believe I read about CM10 having added a feature where you inside the OS could search for and download new versions directly on the phone, like you can with new software on iOS. Is this possible on both CM10 and ParanoidAndroid?
I'm looking for something that is both rock stable and yet constantly adds new gizmos and features, so I have something to play with. I'd like for it to be very easy for me to upgrade to newer versions. On Omega you downloaded via torrents, transferred to the SD card and then just rebooted into CWM and installed from zip. It automatically wiped cache, dalvik and such. So you didn't really have to do much yourself. But if CM10 could do it evern better and also download directly to the Phone, then that's a big plus for me.
I'm also a bit curious about why people change so much stuff on their phones. I often hear people talk about different kernels. From what I understand the kernel is sort of the drivers that bridges the gap between the OS and the hardware. Why is this so important? On Omega the default seemed to work perfectly... so what do you actually get by swapping? if the answer is 0.5% extra batterylife, then that's just not enough for me.

CM10 builds are nightlies, and PA is based off of CM10. So if you want rock stable - go stock

Well first of all, kernel is not only your "drivers". It manages your governors, your I/O schedulers, CPU freq etc. That means when you are flashing a new kernel you are either looking for some improvements in responsiveness of the device, deep-sleep state improvements, WiFi patches (muticast f.e.), modules (like mali gpu), ko's (lets say for xbox controller or openvpn support), better RAM management OR you simply wanna sound smart to your friends :cyclops:
There are couple of articles you should take a look by droidphile, first one is Kernel Stuff and the second one is Governors, Modules, etc
Regarding the ROM, it pretty much depends on what you would like to do with it. If you wanna have working radio, call recording, "smart stay" and other things which are specific to TW based ROM's than you should stick with Samsung TW based ones.
CM is awesome! Very clean and nice experience. Couple of glitches here and there but no deal breaker.
PA is my daily driver. I'm very happy with it and I can't recommend enough. Highly customizable, tons of options, custom led lights, different DPI settings for each app, different layouts, on screen nav bar so on and so forth.
Although PA is based off of CM they are now migrating to AOSP. The main difference between them is code bloat. CM has own settings and codes to support them, which makes it a little bit slower than AOSP but that doesn't mean its worst.
You should start experimenting and see for yourself. XDA is full of information and although the search function is not working for the moment it will work and you can find all your answers.

[Q] Most stable release with modern features?

What is overall the most stable rom that actually has up to date android features? I was reading the CM10 issues log and stuff like "can't receive calls when bluetooth is on" is just an instant turnoff. I know every custom ROM is going to have issues, but what is overall the best balance of modern and stable for the Droid X2?
I'd like at least 4.1, but I know the world isn't perfect.
Well since we are sadly on a locked bootloader it makes it difficult for us; The most stable roms are Gingerbread. CM7 is pretty good and is running android 2.3.6 i believe. Eclipse is pretty good and smooth but cm7 has overall more features. CM10 would probably more stable than cm9 but cm10 sadly gets some force closes(i never experienced this when i was using it )

4.1 is the furthest we have gotten. cm10 is 4.1 , cm9 is 4.0 . cm10 is WAY more stable than any ICS build we have. i use it as a daily, and if you dont use many apps, and can stand a bit less battery life, it is totally worth it.
it has curbed my want/need for a new phone.....or atleast until november!

I started using MIUI last night is sorta like iOS and and it uses ICS framework havent had a fc or random reboot yet no missed calls to my knowledge
I used the CM10a3 port and my gmail app was WICKED unstable, a flick scroll would not FC it but it would just close. I LOVED google now but due to compatibility*? issues i could not update it with anything google released. I currently run eclipse, although older has been the most stable, battery efficient, and usable rom on my DX2.
.02
You know, with all the apps, launchers, keyboards, themes, etc., you can probably be pretty happy with a stable gingerbread ROM and make it look and feel like ICS or JB.
I'd run cm7 with holo launcher for that jb feel

at this point, i have been using cm9 for a few months due to the phone call issue present in cm10. whenever the screen turns off due to the proximity sensor ( holding it to your face) the call is lost and the phone freaks out. this is a phone. so that would not work for me. cm9 has better battery life, and a few more apps work with it. from what it seems, DZK has abandoned us. our only how on a better JB is g2yupie working out his 4.2, and it not having the same phone call issue. i say try out cm9. unless you dont make many calls. also, it doesnt do the proximity thing if you are plugged in. but any other time, under any other circumstances , it does. there is no work around.

which stable and good performance rom i should flash,

hi i am new to redmi note 3, before this i have samsung note 3 neo, samsung s3, sony xperia p, on all this devices i flash many rom, now on this device i have use miui 7 and miui 8 beta, but on both i am getting battery drain, unstabele network, call drop probelm, so i am thinking to move on any custom rom, so please help me to choose one of them, i just need good battery life, performance like stock and no bug's. so anyone using any rom like this please tell me. now i am on miui 7.5.3 globle stabel and bootloader is still locked.
You cant flash custom rom without unlocking Bootloder.....Mokee is best for me
CM13 by Santhosh M.
Pair it with Xposed and DS batt saver.
It's better than stock.
I've tried a few ROMs already and none of them are any good in my opinion. A lot of them are still in beta/testing stages so that's to be expected.
Santosh's CM13 was alright, I've had a few phone reboots and battery issues with it. SlimAOSP has wifi signal issues for me and yes I've tried the CM13 radios already. There are a few other ones I've tried but I'll jump straight to the point.
MIUI is the most stable and it makes sense because it's the official ROM for this phone. I'd just flash it using MiFlashBeta and flash the latest fastboot version - which you can find from the official website (Google it). As for an actual custom ROM, I'm currently on the leaked qualcomm 5.1 AOSP. There's a thread here that as the pre-rooted and Xposed version packaged in, so you can just use that.
So far, no reboots on this ROM. Battery life is great, I have about 5 hrs 40 mins screen on time with about 47% battery left. I'm using Greenify and PowerNap only, no kernel tweaks etc. Fingerprint works on this as well, but to be fair fingerprint was never an issue for me on all the custom ROMs I've tried. This ROM is quite stable and I would imagine so, as this was a leaked ROM from qualcomm, so it's probably optimized in some way. Also, it's AOSP, which is generally better in terms of battery compared to CM ROMs.
The ONLY issue on this ROM is bluetooth. I can pair with bluetooth devices and get audio fine. But I can't get my car to pull the bluetooth phone profile, which is responsible for syncing contacts from my phone. All other ROMs I've tried do not have this issue. What this basically means is I can't use my car to fetch contacts from my phone, therefore I can't send/receive SMS or calls from my car's infotainment system. Quite an annoyance for me, but considering how stable this ROM is as opposed to the other ones I've tried, it's a sacrifice I'll have to make.
I'd say just stick to the most stable ROM that suits you, wait a few more months until other ROMs become more stable, then try them out.

I suggest you to try this.

really good in my opinion.
I had only one isssue with all official miui that cpu never sleep after 10-12 hrs of reboot.
I tried many things on it to work.
But then I found this and its really good.
