hi.
so I've read thru some stickies, but I just want to be 100% sure I won't mess something up and ask too much later..
My phone gives me this info:
PDA : MC2
PHONE : MC2
REGION : MC1 (SEE)..
I plan to wait for my exact region code update to show up so I have one less thing to screw up
In the meantime, what is my best option to proceed with the update (considering possible EFS problems)
1) Should I now update to 4.1.2 FW but on I9300XXEMG4 modem, would it be safer to update on 4.3 later ?
And should I do it with KIES or OTA or MOBILE ODIN/ODIN
2) Or I can skip this since I'm rooted and phone works fine and just update to 4.3 and MODEM: I9300BUUGMJ3 when it occurs ?
3) Again, when it does occur(4.3 SEE) , is it better to do KIES update or MOBILE ODIN/ODIN one?
Thank you in advance..In case I missed this info I apologise in advance since my head has too much info at the moment.
One have more than one safely kept EFS backup .
Two official updates are via Kies or OTA .
Alternative will be to flash your rom via Odin from sammobile.com or flash any stock 4.3 rom you want .
Personally i would wait for a stable 4.3

I am waiting for stable 4.3 and also have EFS backed up..you can never be too carefull
I cannot update OTA since I'm rooted but KIES already informed me about 4.1.2. update with MG modem...Haven't tried..
Just wondered if it's better to update now to latest 4.1.2, or I will just skip and wait for stable 4.3
And is it better to do it via KIES or ODIN
Makes no difference, it won't change your experience greatly. Upgrading your rom to latest 4.1 or 4.3 will automatically change your efs to v2, provided you use the full stock package.
Doing it via kies or odin makes little difference, odin has options that can brick the phone if chosen so perhaps better stay with the safer option?

Hello, just to preface this- im not very technical, but i can follow instructions well.
Anyway, You guys were great to help me two months ago in rooting my phone. I ended up doing it through Odin and all went great. Got all the **** off my phone which was the main aim. I didn't put any custom roms on there as im a bit useless when it comes to this stuff and i felt i'd be pushing my luck after the rooting went so well.
Yesterday i used Kies and it asked me to upgrade the firmware as there was a new version available.
1. What should i do? Will upgrading through Kies reverse the rooting procedure or break my phone?
2. Should i get the newer update from this site? If so- is there any tutorial for updating the firmware after already rooting the phone through odin (chainfires method i think it was?
Thank you in advance for any advice all.
My phone details are ;
ANdroid 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100XXKE7
Kernel version; 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKF3-CL276555
[email protected] #2
Build number; GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
I have used kies to update firm ware after rooting and it did not UN root my phone so you should be fine. It did however install more useless apps that I had to remove.

i would update via kies then go to chainfires post and pick root and cwm to match your new firmwares kernel .
That way you wont have to learn how to flash stock firmwares etc .,

What JJ said is to flash via Kies and then flash the CF-Root kernel from Chainfire to get root and CWM in the phone.
Hi Azeurius,
the thing is that i already have root and cwm on the phone. Ive already rooted.
So im at the point where i can upgrade the firmware through kies, but im looking for advice what i should do overall- nearing in mind the fact ive already rooted, and phone details are in Openingpost.
THanks!
Ok well I am also new here but from everything I have read my understanding is that you have rooted your device and loaded the original Kernel for your current firmware. If you upgrade through Kies then you will obviously have an upgraded firmware with the old kernel (from your 1st rooting).
So when you upgrade your firmware you just have to also upgrade your Kernel through odin so your phone will still be properly rooted.
I stand to be corrected. I only started reading about rooting today as I just got my Galaxy s2 having come from a Blackberry so new to Android but loving it!!! Best os ever!
I think I will root my phone but not going to touch the firmware as ICS should be release on Kies soon cant wait

Any stock upgrade removes root .

Correct
One big problem with Kies is that if you change firmware its possible that you lose the Kies upgrade path as phone codes no longer match .

Hello guys. Im relatively new to XDA. So I might sound stupid. My question is, as jje mentioned above "One big problem with Kies is that if you change firmware its possible that you lose the Kies upgrade path as phone codes no longer match" am i correct in saying that if I update my Galaxy s II (rooted + cwm recovery no custom rom) via kies, then I could run into problems? Also one more question. If I do update via kies, will it remove root and cwm recovery?? Thanks guys. .

Use Odin
I think KIES forbides to upgrade on rooted firmware. Even if it allows you i think you will use your root. I suggest you if you want the latest stock rooted firmware use Odin find the stock rooted XWLSD(Nordic countries) and flash via Odin (Don't use XWLS8 it has bugs), XWLSD is super stable or XXMS1(Poland) or XWLSE(Russia) if you are not from this countries then use XWLSD. If you want custom rom with no mods and no bloatwares use Neat rom or Wanam lite rom, if you want custom rom with mods and no bloatwares use disaster, biftor, omega, alliance rom and etc.
Yeah. I dont mind losing root access. As log as I can get official ota. Btw has the exynos bug been addressed?

Thanks. I will be try updating my rooted i9500 and P600 via Kies. I am not sure if there is already an update for my region available for the S4 but I was prompted to update my P600 only to get a notification telling me that my device has been modified. This was for OTA updating. I really hope it works because I am really not looking forward to un-rooting these devices just for the updates since downloading the stock ROM takes forever. Will post results after trying just in case anyone is interested.
Hey everyone, Merry Christmas
Since the day I've brought my GSII I've been running VillainROM. It's great and I don't have any issues with it but I live in an area of exceptionally low signal. My network provider is Orange and I believe the Galaxy SII supports their UMA Signal Boost app that will allow me to connect to the Orange network via my home broadband (over WiFi) and thus give me signal for once!!
I've done some research and it doesn't seem like it's possible to just download an .apk of the Signal Boost app, so the only thing I can think of doing is completely wiping my phone and putting the latest official Orange UK/Galaxy SII ROM on it. While I love the benefits of a custom ROM, signal is more important to me (it is a phone, after all....)
I've never had to revert to stock, so could some kind soul please give me a guide on what I need to do? Where do I get the latest version of the Orange ROM? Do I flash it in the same way I would flash a custom ROM? If that's the case, so I then lose root access and recovery mode?
And finally...will my Tiny Tower game save be lost?? Or does Mobage keep game progress on their servers?? (Priorities, eh! haha)
Sorry for all the questions, any help that you can provide would be awesome.
EDIT- One final question I have just thought of. How do I also get the modem back to the original version? Will flashing everything back to stock solve this? I basically want to reset everything so that it's like I just purchased the phone from Orange.
One a mod has been posted recently ref UMA Signal Boost

You can always flash a different modem on a custom rom .

Thanks for the quick reply
Sorry for my stupidity but I still don't really know what ROM I should be flashing from the list...there appear to be three: BVKE3, BVKG3 and BVKJ4. Shall I just pick any one that I fancy?
Once I've flashed the appropriate ROM, do I then update the modem manually myself via ODIN? If so, what modem do I select? Or could I install the new ROM, hook it up to Kies and it will do the rest for me?
Many thanks
Simon

Start with the latest rom flash via Odin try Kies for update though rom you have may be newer than kies version .
Test phone then a modem can be flashed via Odin as Phone start again with last one and work back .

Sorry mate, I don't really understand what you just said there. I am being a bit dense, I know that, but I'm after a really clear guide as I'm mega scared to ruining my phone.
From what I gather I need to do this:
1. Download the firmware: PDA:BVKJ4|PHONE:BVKJ4|CSC:ORAKJ4, BVKJ4 Stock Kernel and the correct modem (BVKJ4)
2. Download ODIN
3. Flash the firmware through ODIN using the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
4. Flash the BVKJ4 stock kernel
5. Flash the appropriate modem.
Does that round about right?

Actually, I've just read somewhere that flashing the firmware does the kernel and modem all in one. Is that right?
EDIT- Okay, so I bit the bullet and flashed the BVKJ4 firmware. I'm now stuck in a boot loop.
So, I found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20656074#post20656074 which told me to flash the KI3 firmware as this will do a full wipe and THEN install BVKJ4. I'm going to give this a try now and will report back...
EDIT 2 - Okay, so the KI3 flash worked I'm now reflashing the BVKJ4 firmware in the hope that it works and I can get that blasted Signal Boost app...
Update on what's happened since my last post. I have successfully updated to what I think is the latest firmware version on Orange (UK).
Kies now says that my phone cannot be updated. Can someone let me know what I should flash in order to allow Kies to manage this for me? Noe I've gone back to stock, it's just easier to allow Kies to sort it out for me, instead of me keeping up to date with the million threads on the internet with the latest ROMs.
Thanks.

KIES cannot update unless the provider has given an update to the KIES server . If you have flashed Orange firmware its they who supply KIES .Ask Orange for last update .
If you have flashed various roms you may find your product codes no longer match any firmware .You need a total removal of KIES and all KIES registry settings from your PC .

Well, prior to rooting my phone in the first place, Kies was fine with updating my firmware. I got it from Phones4U on release day, so it's not carrier branded. I believe (although I'm not 100% sure) that I wouldn't have had the Orange firmware but rather the generic Samsung firmware.
The only reason I'm flashing the Orange firmware is for Signal Boost. But as I said previously, I don't want to keep checking the internet for new software versions. When ICS is ready for example, I just want Kies to manage the update for me. Could you please let me know whether completely uninstalling Kies (and registry entries) will fix my issue? It's a lot of effort if it won't and I need to install a different firmware version instead.
Thanks.
It might is the answer .
You have gone down the non standard firmware path by rooting and installing custom roms thereby changing codes .
If the codes on your phone match a KIES update then it updates its as simple as that .
Basic problem is not saving a copy of original firmware and all its codes that might have helped .Find your original firmware flash it and see if KIES will update .

Hi guys, first post so be gentle!
After plenty of reading I decided to root my S3, which is a UK variant locked to the Three network. For a while I was running CWM with the Siyah kernel but stock ROM. After being unable to install any updates (OTA or Kies) for an unknown reason I decided to use Odin to install flash back to stock 4.0.4, which I thought was the right idea...
Now my phone shows that there are no updates available OTA, and Kies tell me that my phone doesn't support updating with Kies. I know JB is available on Three here in the UK, though I'm not that fussed, I just want my phone to have stock firmware and kernel and to be able to update if I want to! Would any kind and knowledgeable soul be able to help me out please?
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband: I9300XXLE8
Kernel: 3.0.15-554452-user [email protected] #1
Build: IMM76D.I9300XXALE8
Thanks in advance and sorry if this is in the wrong section!
Dont wait for official via OTA. You already rooted.. go to sammobile or search here for official roms. Download and flash via Odin.

Hey I have a rooted i9300 on 4.1.1 stock rom and I want to update it to 4.1.2 without losing data .
Whats the best way to do this ?
1.Unroot with supersu and update using ota ,than rooting with odin again?
2.vodoo ota keeper and update using ota (ALthough I'm not sure whether it is compatible with sgs3 or not)
3.Some other method
The main point is that I just want to update without having to arrange all my homescreen and icons and stuff and I want to keep all my whatsapp messages and pictures. So just like a regular firmware update provided by samsung.
Regards,
Flash with Odin full firmware over your current. Apps and settings remain as they are.
You're rooted so the only thing you need is to get mobile odin and flash whatever you want. I went from ics to latest jb, official roms. No data was lost at all.
I did need to reinstall a few apps like handcent that started force closing. Nothing special.
Btw Samsung updates do erase everything sometimes, that's why they're done through kies and that's why they suggest backups to kies first. If you're feeling really unsure just do a backup from a custom recovery first, so you can go back if anything doesn't go as you expect.

O ok thank you ,Should I just follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610 <this thread .Is there anything I should worry about in compatibility and Phone and csc settings ? Or do I pretty much just load firmware onto PDA and flash?
Also I'm with tmobile UK
GT-i9300
4.1.1
I9300XXDLID
which firmare should I flash I9300XXELL4 or I9300XXELLA ?
Sorry about all these questions ,just wanted to make sure everything was correct and I dont brick my phone.
Regards.
So I decided to un-root and use kies just to get an 'updated' stock version instead of my current 4.0.4 version and I get this error message:
"your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via kies"
Looking on sammobile, the latest stock version for my csc they provide is 4.0.4 so apparently I'm screwed.
Is there a workaround to get the 4.1.2 stock version for my phone?
Details:
I9300-XXBLFB
CSC: I9300OJVBLF3
The reason for this is NFC seems to be broken on this version (as far as receiving files go) and I wanted to see if they fixed the issue in the updated rom.
You have to change your CSC.
Can i just flash an XXEMF6 ROM from sammobile via odin?

Thats great news! I'll do that instead.
As far as I know, Samsung released an update for every version of the S3 (except mine) to JB 4.1.2.
Didn't even realize it until now as I've been flashing roms for 2 years now- about 2 days after I got the phone.
