Ok, here's the elephant in the room. People are up in arms about Kingo root because it's an unknown and they're afraid it'll send information back to them. Yet, this "camera silencer" app is just a download without any transparency t all, not through the Play store and we're supposed to just trust that it doesn't gather up a lot of stuff and send it back home? Crazy.

The difference is this app has source codes on the same page, you can read them, compile your own APK and install it.

Yup, it's all right there.

Installed it seems to work. Apk no icon stuff is scary they. Exactly how is it disabling sound? Doesn't appear to be renaming files so? Anyone provide insight?

It definitely disables the camera sound, however after a while it reenables certain options i prefer to keep disabled. Primarily the touch sound (every time you touch the screen it makes a sound).

I've been using it for a while and haven't had anything turned on that was previously off.

Do you keep Touch Sounds enabled?

[Q] How to disable camera shutter sound?

Is it possible to disable the camera shutter sound on the SGS2? It's very loud and kind of annoying.
I'm going to a wedding at the weekend and it would be nice to be able to take pictures without pissing off the entire church.
Put the phone in silent mode when using the camera that should do the trick without any trickery
Silent mode doesn't make any difference, it's still the same.
Anyone know if there's a good camera app without shutter sound I can use instead?
Even when i have it on silent mode, it still makes the shutter sound
There is no setting to disable it in camera settings anymore?
You could do it on SGS...
Try turning media volume down
You need root
Go to /system/media/ui/
Then delete the files got to do with the camera including the shutter

Yup, someone wanna chuck us the camera apk? Should be possible to fix it that way..
Or, as someone said, try renaming the sound file in media to whatever.ogg.OLD
I think all UK phones have to comply with anti-voyeurism laws which is why all phones there have the camera shutter no matter what. If you have rooted your phone I think you could easily delete or modify the shutter sound though...

Use root explorer, you can and need to enable write access in order to change/rename files at root level.

From the code, I see there should be a setting to enable or disable autofocus sound.
Can you please confirm if this exists before I go much further into this. Usually you tap menu, or press a settings button on-screen in camera to get some options.
Looks like it can be disabled.

OK. You can try pulling the APK, then removing the file in res/raw/. Delete the ogg file with the obvious name like AutoFocus.ogg (not got the file to hand)
Back up the old one before doing this! Then replace the file on the device with this one. Reboot, see if it works. If it doesn't and camera doesn't appear, then you need to restore the backup and reboot again. That should fix it
If it crashes when focussing, we need to replace the OGG with an "empty" ogg, but then re-sign the APK, which will involve editing packages.xml
while were on the subject, is it possible to remove the parental control set in place, that prevents the camera from being opened if the battery is >15%, and where it kills your music, when you open the camera? i will personally donate $25 dollars if you did that. and forever praise you as the best developer in the world
(very serious about the donation tho)

[Q] How to know if phone camera is a spy?

This might sound wierd, but:
How can I be sure that there is no program or website taking photos or videos
from my phone camera, while I regularly use it or browsing??
I mean, I have used IP webcam to broadcast the video from my android tablet to my ubuntu laptop, and it even has a hidden mode.
How are we sure that there is no some app or webpage duing something like that??
This question also comes to my mind, because the laptop webcam has a blue led that turns on when the camera is in use, but there is nothing in the tab?
Check whats running in the background.... and check the permissions of the apps installed on your phone.. thats it

Easy answer is get gemini app manager. When it shows all your installed apps it will tell you which can use the camera and other phone features.

Your post was correct and to-the-point, no doubt about that.
What I am saying is that by enabling this paranoia, we are doing more harm than good.
And this is not uncommon in Android. For example, many apps require permission to use camera. Gallery apps, photo editing apps, social network apps, you name it. It's simply so that they can have a tiny little button that says : "Take a new photo".
If a developer wants to capture photos without you knowing, he can do it and his app can look pretty legit too.
See where I'm going with this? It's high time we started saying things the way they are.
So, I stand by my point.
@OP: no one wants to see pictures of you THAT bad.

I agree. One thing some android users often seem to skip is the bit prior to app installation where it says exactly what features the app can access. If they see something suspicious there, say a live wallpaper that can dial phone numbers for example, they can just not install it.

App Now On App Store
I have paid Google and have posted this app on the Play Store. I have also been at work on a new version that will incorporate a more complete UI (easy to be more complete that what is in this version), scheduled operations, and the ability to toggle auto-rotate as well as dominant hand (as some sources claim this helps with issues related to landscape versus portrait mode). Thanks to all for your feedback as this has encouraged me to go further!
After starting your app (downloaded from google play) touchwiz stops responding and closing on Gnote2.

Well that sounds unpleasant. Can I ask a few follow-ups? Did your phone prompt you to grant root access to Reset Spen? If so, did you grant it? Is your phone completely stock other than being rooted (for example, any kernel changes)? Finally (at least for now), what su program and version is installed on your phone? Thanks for your help with this.

Thanks for the info and screen shots. Right now I am stumped. Same su and settings as my Note N7000 but I have only ICS 4.0.4. I have a couple response from (what I assume to be and have emailed to confirm are) other Note II users (see one in this thread) and they have not encountered this. I will be following-up and apologize for the hangs.
Just tested it on the official MIUI rom based on touchwiz. App does its job but after the notification that the s-pen has been reset the launcher (stock MIUI home) freezes for like 15sec.
I'm not really bothered by this so i would say great job on this

Yikes! I appreciate the positive comments but I am not at all happy about this freeze. Can you tell me what su program/version is being used? When my app runs the first time, are you prompted by su to give permission (I presume so since you are getting a success)? Is there any message displayed from the su app or anything in the su app's logs? Anything in logcat?
Thanks

Thanks Promi! Unfortunately, I see no log entries from my app in that file. Did you try running the app (and enduring the freeze issue) which this was being recorded? I assume you did but since I see no evidence, I had best confirm this. I appreciate your time and help with all this and apologize for the problem.
So this is achieved, effectively, by toggling the dominant hand for the S Pen? How curious, very helpful! Doing so seems to have made a difference to my slightly less sensitive right hand margin.

Thanks once again. In the logcat recording, the only thing I see that looks possibly bad is a NullPointerException coming from the package com.sec.android.widgetapp.ap.hero.accuweather.widget.WeatherClock which I take to be some form of widget on your home screen. When, in development of my app (my first one), my poor programming resulted in a NullPointerException this resulted in freezes followed by program stopped messages. I am not blaming anyone/thing. But I am wondering if there may not be some bad interaction between my app and this widget that causes it to NullPointerException? Is it possible to remove this widget temporarily and try again to see if the problem persists and, if so, get another catlog? Thanks!
My only weather widget is stock samsung nature ux weather/clock widget
After removing it, touchwiz still hangs.
i will remove unneeded things from my desktop/phone and try gen new catlog.

Well, I am likely grasping at straws here. But that is all I saw in the catlog that was untoward. The fact that I see nothing from my app in there is very disconcerting and confusing. Thanks again for all your time and help.

Ok Google not working from lock screen or screen off

I went into google now search settings and performed the voice training and enabled the option for hot word detection from lock screen and power off but it doesn't work. the only time it works is when i'm at the home screen UNlocked OR at the google now search area. Screen off or from lock screen detection simply does not work.
does anyone else notice this?
I don't have the nexus 9 but I did install the latest google now search and launcher from apkmirror .com and there was an always listening option in 'hotword detection' in voice settings of the google now. There was also the screen off detection option but it was greyed out. I had the always listening in all apps option enabled and it was working greatly but the next day I woke up and the feature wasn't working so I went into settings and discovered that both of those options had disappeared (not greyed out but freaking disappeared), its some kind of google restriction, they are remotely restricting users from using these features for some unexplained reason.
Maybe its the same for u or it might be something else.
Same here, bit worked arter reboot
It works for a while after a reboot, but eventually stops working after a couple hours.
Looks like a common bug, I've seen some threads about this same issue (and I'm experiencing the same problem, too)

there is an option in Google Now -> Settings -> Voice -> OK google detection ....a check box exists here stating:
When Locked
Allow "OK Google" to start a voice search or action from a secure lock screen
so, it would seem that this is what was intended. perhaps what they meant here was that the screen has to be on and not timed out. dunno.
Yes, but screen has to be on. Only nexus 6 and 9 support GN with screen locked and off
Google search from locked screen works for a while and then stops. It's done this on my s4 and note 3. It is defenetly supposed to work from secure lock screen. In Google now settings there is a 3rd check box and you even get a warning stating anyone may be able to unlock your phone.
Google needs to fix this issue. I'm not sure what's up with these companies making screwed up software. Where are the devs, and why are they getting paid if they can't make flawless software. When I crash My car into a tree trying to unlock my phone and I press a law suit against google I'll bet they will fix it. Always takes a law suit to fix ****.
Oh. Anyone notice every app you've ever paid for or downloaded is under my apps "all" what's up with "all" I'll file my documents in my office under the "all" folder and see how quickly I get fired...Thanks for allowing me to rant.

If you got your phone from south korea, there's no setting to turn it off. It's a law here, every phone that's sold in Korea has to have shutter sound. This is to prevent perverts to take upskirt photos of women

I fail to see how privacy would play into this. Anyone that wants to take a picture silently can still do so by disabling their sound. Purposefully not including a separate option to disable shutter sound solely serves to make things more difficult, not protect anybody.
You could just load Open Camera from F-Droid and get not only the ability to turn off the noise, but a lot of other settings as well.

How do you disable sound ? you mean silent mode
Won't work
But that mutecamera (no spaces between the two words there) by SangGwon.Park app does. On my v20 which amazed me. Had given up on the G4 because root was not possible.
Free for only 15 pics though. If you watch some ads you get 15 more free, write a review, another 15. Don't know whether paying gets rid of ads. Can anyone confirm ?
It gets accessibility so whether its a security risk is for you to determine.
I downloaded a (paid app) called "SilentMode". It can actually mute any app, not just the (stock) camera, but it works well. Pixel Camera has the option but if you want the stock one for all it's features, this is a good option.

Yes, that's the one.
Actually, it's pretty cool, because what it does is mute an app's oral notifications without touching any other apps or the system. I use another app called Kijiji, it's a local classifieds - it defaults to the system notifications so if sounds are on, you get a sound notification. Well, I just want a visual notification for Kijiji...so this app can help.
Reduce the phone volume
You can reduce the volume of mute the phone and it works. So simple I didn't think about it at first. Tested in an European LG V30
