[MOD] Xperia Z Ultra touchScreen mod/tweak - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I had a touchscreen sensitivity problem that I've now resolved, I use an aftermarket screen protector on top of the anti shatter film that comes pre installed on our phones, and my keyboard was all over the place when swiping, it seemed the screen was too sensitive even with the additional protector on, I'm using build .527
I found the following file, max1187x_touchscreen_0.idc in the /system/usr/idc directory, and just altered the touch.filter.level = 2 line using Root Explorer.
Tried all values upto 7, which for me is when the sensitivity became too low and I had to press hard to get the keyboard to cooperate, I found for me the optimum setting is 5, so the line now read's touch.filter.level = 5 as per the attached screenshot.
You may have to experiment to get your optimum setting but for me every word I swipe is correct and I always hit the smallest of checkboxes first time now with 5.

Also going to experiment further because I'd like to slightly increase the touch area (pixels) touched on actual touch.

I guess you're familiar with the touch screen problem of the Z1 right? I want your honest opinion about that if it's really a hardware or a software issue.. threads are here in xda and in sony forums..
Thank you very much. If that can be resolved through software alterations then i'll try this one.

Yeah us Ultra users over the fence have the same issue. I believe its purely software.
Reason being is that its not quite as bad, and by default these settings are difference. So have a play, and maybe even go as high as 6 and that should make the issues go away, however you may need to touch the screen, not just gently breeze over it.

My issue is that it loses touch for a period of time and you have to lift your finger in order for the screen to work again, this happens more on flat surfaces especially in bed. It's annoying since it affects the gaming experience. I hope this can ease the problem, so what i need in this case is increased or decreased sensitivity?

This was caimed to also work on the Z1 a few posts back, and is linked to on Z1 forum. I fixed the issue anyway, guess I'll share my fix on Z1.

Can anyone with 4.3 or 4.4 post a screen shot of their settings? Mine is horrible. Hoping Sony fixed it in the update.

Thanks, but please: Add "sensitity" tag to your topic's name.

How you fix that?

Didn't worked for my zu, still ghost clicking, even continious series. GPe firmware fixes a little, but I didn't like it. I merged idc files of gpe and .136 - no difference, so I think there are another responsible files else.

Just trying to figure out what the numbers look like on the chart to see if Samsung ruins the good notes.
As it was mentioned in the original thread... I think it was reasonably conclusive that there were NO good notes. They're all the same.

I honestly disagree with that. I think what exists is something similar to what we did see on the skyrocket,
a combination of an actual software issue and the manufacturer sources different screens
someone had posted a picture of a few notes, all having a slightly different screen appearance
similar to the skyrocket pics I posted a while back

Sadly when mentioning my theories I get lumped into the naysayer group.
I do see that there is an issue. I scrutinized the previous methods of determining it yes, but the test image does a fairly good job of displaying the problem. Funny thing is, that test image does not display consistently across any of the displays I check...which kind of sucks...every display I own had some issue or another
It was me, I posted 3 notes side by side, all with the same settings and vastly different screen appearances. Y'all need the pic for reference again?
This is something I really only notice when viewing low res video...If I use HD or the like I dont have this issue..
Same on my PC when I watch a ****ty trailer and the blacks look blocky on my monitor..Not to say some notes dont have a real issue but I think its software mostly.
The leaked ICS build simply shifted the black clipping point from between 0 and 1 to between 6 and 7. They didn't do anything to actually fix the problem.

I know this, but I'm trying to find out if it will adjust all Notes to the 6-7 range or if it will keep the gradual fade that some "good" Notes have on GB.

Lmao..that IS doing something to correct the problem... If its a hardware issue, all you can really do with software is work around the hardware limitations...

My best guess, based on what I know happens when you shift the black point, or increase contrast is that, on ICS, box 7 becomes roughly the same brightness as box 1 on GB. If you had a gradual fade in GB, it will still be a gradual fade on the ICS leak. The only difference is that it will gradually fade to 7 before clipping to black, rather than all the way to 1.

But Samsung has not acknowledged that it is a hardware issue. In fact, they have not acknowledged a problem at all. If they come out and say that it is a hardware problem, then fine - at least we know. But just moving the black clipping point to put a band-aid on the problem isn't doing anything at all.

It's "doing something," but it's certainly not something that would "correct" the problem. Initial testing indicated that they simply shifted the system-wide contrast, nothing more. (since you can return to the old GB results by setting contrast -15).

They are saying something....from a letter in the International forum thread about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24964262&postcount=694
It's kinda odd that the letter is dated for 4/17/2012. So Samsung wrote the letter in India, mailed it out to that guy, he got the letter, took picture of it, and posted it on XDA all in the same day?! I don't think Samsung Customer service is that good to have a letter sent and recieved in the same day. Smells Fishy to me.

That app wont do anything to address the clipping. However, supercurio, the author, says he has a separate ICS-based fix for the clipping issue on the n7000 -- so we're hoping to get it ported to our i717...

You should never be absolutist when talking about looks but temper things by adding " in my opinion".

Yellow turns in to slightly green on full brightness.
But if you use full brightness you dont get the benifit of Whitemagic so personaly i dont see the point of using full brightness on Xperia P

Not so at all. Beauty is subjective while power is absolute.
Many will argue that the X10 is a better looking device than the galaxy s2 but only a fool will argue that it's faster.
To say you don't need the power is another thing entirely and not remotely related to the point in question.

No death grip issue - just maybe 1 bar drop in signal when I hold it, which other phones also have.

Yes, whitemagic works great, the screen is brighter at lower power, so you don't need to crank it up to "Men In Black Memory Wipe" levels to get a great image.

And the important of specs to one is subjective, while the importance of the beauty to someone can be opbjective.
We can talk in circles here for hours, but the point is, i don't like being told ''what to do''.
This is a international forum, if one simply forgets to add ''in my opinion'', don't get so ''gradual'' about it, that's all i'm sayin.
It's true about beauty=subjective / specs=absolute, but different people, different things what they find important. No one is debatting about the differences between specs between PHONE A or PHONE B.

POLL: Do you use the fingerprint sensor now?

Just wondering how many people actually use the fingerprint sensor on a daily basis...
I used it occasionally before I was unlocked and s-off, but since that happened, I dont care to bother getting it to work again, since, IMO, it was placed in a bad spot, and I always ended up smearing my camera lens when trying to use it. HTC should either move it or dump it, but thats food for another thread..
Post your feelings about it here!
I am using fingerprint in a daily basis.
I simply register 3 fingers, all of them to unlock screen.
When swiping those fingers (while registering), i place my palm 'not' inline vertically to the phone.
My palm is in casual position. Just like when casually holding the phone, which of fingers that are casually touch the scanner.
For me I swipe them a bit diagonally.
Once registered, It works flawlessly be it when phone in vertical or horizontal position.
Be it you swipe it upward or downward or even a bit right/left ward.
Sent from my HTC One max using xda app-developers app
I use to use it all the time however the fact the hardware is not used beyond the Security screen bothers me. I.E. password/Fingerprint authorizations change authorizations. It should be programmed to work outside of the security screen lock. I.E. buy something on Play Store it ask for a password you swipe. Like Apple did with touch ID.
I don't use it as I don't really like the position and the usability a lot. On my old phone, Atrix 4G I used it only in the beginning as well, never really had a need for it.
Sent from my HTC One max using Tapatalk
Use it everyhour.. thats my method of unlock.. quite better than typing a pin for me.
yes! I even removed my corporate exchange account in order to gain access to the scanner. part of the rules in using company exchange is they disable all of those options.
the chicks dig it too!!!! :highfive:
I love to use the Fingerprint. But i really don't like the position and when Finger lock security active. It alway disable the lockscreen pulldown nofitication. So.. .i disable this. Sadly

But what better place do you think would be possible? i am wondering how a phone which does not have a physical home button can use a sensor in the front?!
Looking at poll, most of the population not using the fingerprint sensor, i am guessing it is going to be acceptable if the devs port ROM's from the One to the MAX without the fingerprint sensor and i am sure that will be easy and could be achieved by a beginner dev
that would be fantastic; there are so many great roms for the one, and I agree, 95% of us could care less about a functional fingerprint sensor, if we could have several more roms to choose from..
Had no clue this has a poll. Must not be viewable mobile which likely most of us viewing this forum are.

For me it is essential to have a "Tap to Wake", "Smart Back Light" and "Answering Machine". this will help the user to read e-books without touching the screen (smart back light). to prevent worn-out power button (Tap to wake). and to prevent missing important call (Answering Machine). another things that can be ported to our Great Xperia Z Ultra will be just a bonus for me. 4k and etc. are not usually use for everyday living. Hope this three will be available to our Xperia Z Ultra OFFICIALLY on 4.4.2. and im still hoping.

Confirmed as happening

I used it in my ex-Galaxy nexus too...
But mine was just slide to wake...
So mine will randomly wake in my pocket...

There's also some ultras with phantom click problems, maybe that's the reason for Sony to exclude tap to wake, cause afaik touchscreen will be working all time with t2w and may cause problems with sudden actions.
Well international sony mobile page states that :
Android version: Google Android 4.4 (Kitkat)
Latest available software: 14.3.A.0.681
Release started: 2014-03-19
So 7xx version must be update or smth from the "future"

Strange haptic/vibration feedback

Couldn't find a thread about the ZU on this, but this issue puzzles me. I have a new ZU for two days now and can't really get over the seemingly bad haptic feedback implementation. Whenever I hit the same button a couple of times, or a couple of random ones fast, the intensity of the feedback dramatically increases. Coming from a Note 2 I never had this issue. All this results in an uneven experience when writing.
I read about other Sony's having this issue, wondering whether this is 'normal', because it surely doesn't feel like it.
No one has tested their haptic feedback?

I updated to the latest firmware, 4.4.2, build 14.3.A.0.757. Did you manage to fix it? I talked to LordM about it and he says it's inherent to Sony Z Ultra. Others report differently.

I didn't say that(?), I said that I have the same thing with mine, and I haven't looked at it as something strange - until now. Isn't it normal? I can "fix" it by decreasing the vibration intensity from the keyboard settings, but is this a hardware issue? Software? I don't know, and I really don't care. It doesn't bother me one bit, but that's just me though.
I DO however remember when the Ultra got released, and people were complaining about the weak vibrator, but I, and some other people couldn't understand how people could say that, since the vibrator was and still is brutal as hell. Could it be that we simply have a better vibrator? Does the people with the weaker vibrator have a the "defect" vibrator? Who knows!

Well, you stated "Hi, that's normal. It's just how the stock keyboard is made. You can adjust the vibration intensity in the keyboard settings". Inherent/normal... Anyway, it doesn't really matter, because some people find it weak/strong and others, like me, find it totally weird and different from Samsung. It does seem better now with the stock Google keyboard, will test further tomorrow.
Not sure about your last thoughts, but I do know that this must be the biggest 'vibrator' trololo

It's not even close to being anything like Samsung or any other OEM. You've probably noticed by now that Sony does things... a little differently They do some really great things, but then they'll also do some super weird stuff that makes zero sense. Love it or hate it
I just have to comment that picture, and you asked for this one: Yo mama... I'll stop there, hahah.

You're absolutely right, Sony is a little 'different' indeed. The ZU is quite a beast, very different from the same lame old Sammy phones. I hope Sony keeps improving!
Well, I reckon I'll just have to leave this here then hahaha...

I lost the problem at .681 now i am on Nordic .757 with doomKernel on c6833. if you have a custom rom you are able to change vibration intensity.

You don't need a custom ROM. I'm on stock 757 (Nordic)
