I recently broke my Rezound's cable. Not the end of the world because the regular USB cables that pretty much all other phones use works. However it does have me wondering about the point of the special design. I can get a regular micro USB cable for $.99 on ebay but the specific rezound cable looks like it's around $6. Is it worth paying more to get it?
It's also Mini HDMI and designed that way to prevent port erosion too, actually a marvelous idea. It's a standard Micro USB port that you're acessibg for charging and data transfer though. Its made to have a regular micro USB cable used with it. Poor guy you've been strapped to that one cable the whole time you've had the phone?
I would get a high quality cable, and there's inexpensive ones, but there's no difference to the phone if your micro USB has the special socket on the end besides added strength but it's almost as strong with a regular micro USB. The crumby cheap cables that cause premature wear on the female USB port is what you want to avoid, the male plug wears down and then there's slack so you get extra movement which causes bending and flexing of the port at the board.
I bought a really solid, kind of expensive well reviewed cable on Amazon but the ends are extra long which causes the outer housing not to sit against the side of the phone and function as a brace, even on my girls night stand it started getting slack sooner than I wanted and showing wear.
My next order will be a batch of HTC OEM cables, they're just so solid and well made, but there are great aftermarket ones for 99 cents if you can find them and check them out in person or get recommendations. Window shopping online is a crap shoot, as far as generic stuff.
But yeah, definitely go with a good micro USB, no need for the special end for what you're doing with it especially if you're careful with your phone.
If you use your phone while it's charging and it's getting pressure on the USB cable and port, a ton of movement, or laid on top of often the rez charger (also on the HTC Incredible and other devices) might offer some advantages, that would be the only reason.
I'd spend $6 on an HTC cable, but I'd get a regular micro USB cable so I could use it with other devices too.

so i'm looking into buying another usb wire, being that i have my main wall charger+wire plugged into the wall next to my bed where it charges while i sleep. but my computer is somewhat under my desk and a hassle to get to all the time, so was wanting to have one always plugged into both for less swapping around all the time and also being able to charge while im at the computer if i'm getting a little low.

This is your chance to get a BETTER USB CABLE so do it. The cables sold by BB and Motorola are better quality and much less likely to kink, etc.
FWIW I've been using a few 6 foot cables from Monoprice with no issues. I used them to charge my old busted Palm Pre, and continue to use them on my 4G and now my 3D. My wife also uses them to charge her Shift... The cables are well over 2 years old and have yet to let me down

There is no reason to pay for an "official" cable. You can get better quality cables for less. Monoprice.com is the perfect example of cheap high quality cables. The main thing you need to worry about is the AC adapter not the cable.
I've ordered the cables with ferrite cores off of Monoprice. In each one, the prongs that hold the cable to the phone will eventually sink in and the cable will no longer stick. Monoprice was really good about the issue and gave me a refund (and i didn't even have to return them). The blackberry ones on Amazon have been really good.
I really like the right angle micro USB cables from ezeStand dot com. They are cheap, durable, and work perfectly. I just ordered the bigger stand (old one only works in portrait) and a few extra cables. Going to sugru one of the cables right to the stand to turn it into a one step nighttime dock.
The one that came with my evo 4g is a piece of junk, dosent make a solid connection, i would go to monoprice like mentioned and get some of the 6 foots there and call it a day.

Though one caveat; do NOT use the 10' microUSB cable. Due to the voltages being so low (4.7 if memory serves) the 10' is too long for the full amount of it to go through the long cable. It ends up being like 3.8 (I honestly am pulling this from thin air as I don't feel like looking up the thread even though I have posted in it) and it takes either a long time to charge or as in my case; would not charge while I was using 4G or Wifi.
The 3' cable is PERFECT for a laptop user who has limited space or wants to tether; I have owned them since micro USB was found on my first phone and both of them have been through commercial and industrial settings as well being thrown in a backpack countless times.
The 6' cable is ideal for desktops or as an extra charging cable if purchased with the AC to USB adapters (the white ones work perfect) and have also been using those for at least a year.
Being the type of geek I am, I am VERY anal about the quality of anything technological I purchase because I want the best that is available to me. I am 100% sure there are others just like me here. There is not a single bad thing I can say about monoprice.com , the quality of their cables, their customer service, or their prices.
Yes, some items do cost more than I think they should but I would imagine it is because of the amount of man-hours put into researching what will and will not work. I can always find items that monoprice does not carry (MHL adapters currently) but if enough people send them emails asking for it, they will add it to their stock.
not sure if this justifies a topic of its own but i have kind of wrecked my hp charger cable by using it to charge my phone
i can only assume that the socket on my htc incredible S is tighter or something because the micro usb end wiggles around so much in my touchpad now it doesnt maintain a connection unless i apply pressure in a certain direction!
so just to let you all know, its probably best to keep your hp cable for your touchpad!

huh? the device only pulls as much as much power as it wants
and it only pulls 2amps when the touchpad detects the right amount of resistance
he is talking bout the cable and actually it might be the "teeth" on the micro usb being lower than it should, i basically have gone thru 4 cables because they wont stay in the right place not only because they are recessed (which i have pulled back into place but because there is a crack on the usb port..

I hate micro USB, such a flimsy design.
Basically some of the male ends are a micrometer thicker, causing the female end to stretch.
At least with TouchPad, you can get an inductive charger.

A switching mode power supply (pretty much all newer chargers) will put out its rated voltage as long as the current draw is equal to or less than its max spec. There is a slight variation between chargers output voltage but a few tenths of a volt won't do any damage.
I have charged all sorts of devices using the TP charger without issue. My Sansa Clip using a miniUSB cord, my Droid 3 using the HP cord. The microUSB plug is a standard so ports should be the same on all devices, but I really like miniUSB better. It seems like a more robust connection than micro which feels too small and flimsy.
My charger has a usb socket so I was able to swap out the micro usb charger - can you not do that?

oh yea, obv i can just change the cable, and quite cheaply, but was just letting people know that the slot on the touchpad must be quite big relative to other devices (though i can only vouch for my incredible S).

Sand down those spiked nibs that are supposed to hold the cable in place, they are too big to be needed and cause extra wear and tear on the units usb socket.
Taking them down to about 50% size and making them not so sharp gives the cable a good fit where it wont come out easy but its not like pulling teeth.
I learned this with my N900 lots of users did it, and now I noticed the touchpad had the same kind of fit and cable, so I consider this a necessity if you want to prolong the life of your device and minimize the possibility of something happening like what happened to the OP, atleast for him it was the cable that gave out and not the micro sub port on his TP.
my cable stopped working a while ago so im just using my samsung and htc cable,samsung cable is a real nice fit better than the TP one.
The supplied TP cable is just a flimsy POS. I've bought dollar store cables that were higher quality.
I use the TP charger and the cable that came with my phone to charge both devices. I've been doing it for months with no ill effects to the phone.

Just FYI, the default AC adapter that comes with the TP has two parts.
The front part rotates to separate it from the base, if it's rotated a bit - it won't charge, so double check that the front (where the prongs are) are tightened properly.
Mine's developed the same fault using it on my Galaxy S2, it's now loose on all devices and I had to throw it away. I just think the quality's poor.
The HP cable for my TP stopped charging the device too, got in touch with support and a day later I received a shiny new replacement cable which *isn't* loose

Hmmm, I got the touchstone and haven't used the USB since, unless plugging in to the computer to move an update.zip over. Still tight fit, and with rom I'm running touchstone seems to charge the same as the actual charger that came with touchpad.
It is actually a fact that the stock USB cables are of poor quality. So ultimately its not your fault if it goes bad. Just use another micro USB cable (even cheap ones you find at the convenience stores works great) to charge your touchpad. I've been using my micro USB which came with my phone to charge my touchpad and I must say its a perfect fit for the touchpad.
Trying to find out if there is such a thing as going from extmicro usb that the evo and flyer have to a usb type A (or any other normal usb).
Need a right angle to plug into tablet for car install and found that I can fit a microb angled cable into the tablet, but now need to take the car charges extusb and get an adapter to hook it all together.
You can just buy a regular micro USB extended cable. It fits in the flyer/view charge port.

I am installing the tablet in dash of a car.
I have the oem car charger because its only one with right voltage. But I need a angled usb for clearance issues. So im trying to figure a way to go from the charger EXTMICRO usb to the angled usb.
Searched around and have come up completely empty.
I'm working on the same project and found this thread searching (again) for more info on extusb. The solution I came up with for getting enough clearance to use the port requires disassembly and if you plan on keeping the warranty, it's probably not a good option for you.
Anyway, my solution was to make some small right-angle brackets for the pcb that contains the extusb port. It requires material for the angle brackets and two small screws with nuts. See attached for a better idea.
I actually got the tablet installed and fairly well, but have since removed it to come up with better designs for charging, access to the power button (and possibly volume buttons) for recovery actions, turning the screen on/off with ignition, and potentially microphone relocation.
You may want to check out http://www.dealextreme.com/ for right-angle and other adapters if you don't want to open up the tablet.
PS: Protect that screen. The plastic is very soft and will easily scratch.

If you *need* to use the 12pin micro usb that the view has (which from my understanding was only there for the docking station utility), then you might be out of luck unless you can build something yourself.
Im looking for a cable like you linked to, but then I need a way to connect the flyers car charger special usb tip into it. Only way I can think of is to carefully grind the corners so that it will fit into a micro B female connection.
But the chargers are not cheap and if I F*** it up Im out $30
On a kia soul forum where others are planning on doing the same install with the flyer, one guy has come accross a company that makes custom cables. He said that if We send the car charger to them they will replace the usb tip with a micro B 90 degree angle for $25.
So A person is sending the charger to them to have it done and is going to let us know how it comes out.

opening up the car charger and replacing the cable is incredibly simple. I have done it so many times, I can probably do it blindfolded. I actually had to go and replace the OEM chargers cable with the USB cable that it came with because my damn dog chewed threw the charger cable. Didn't come back very pretty, but it works, that charger has got the be the best charger built I have ever seen, incredibly difficult to open, but I'm sure the car charger is a lot easier to open, you just need a soldering gun and it should be easy.

I ended up purchasing the Rezond based on the previous feedback, but I'm still in the test-drive phase. I'm really enjoying the phone so far and so far I'm thinking "keep". The included headphones are really great also compared to my previous headphones! I'll be waiting at least another week before I decide to keep the phone and decide to put a better ROM on the phone.
Anyway, what's the deal with the charge cable? Standard Micro-USB fits fine, but what's up with the funky cable that came with the device? Will this cause any problems using a longer standard cable or will it cause the phone to charge slower? Does this cable need to be used for proper connection to a PC?
Custom cables always make me leery.

Its actually not a custom cable. It is a MHL adapter. Lots of talk about it in the Accessories forum.
Basically one port for charging and HDMI out instead of two separate ports.
You can charge fine with a regular micro usb cable, I don't think it's slower but I've never timed it.

I bought two of them since I like the secure feeling of the snap in.
I've never tried using a regular micro usb for data and don't have one within arm's reach and I'm really super comfy right now so I'm not going to get up but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
In the accessories forum try searching "mhl cable" and I think you'll come up with two threads about it if you want further info.
I am using a blackberry (micro USB) cable at work, and the OEM cable at home, I see no different in charge time or PC connectivity between the 2 cable.
I also use a blackberry AC adapter to charge the rezound when I am in a pinch.

I figured any standard micro-usb cable will work. A MHL cable makes sense though, I've just never actually seen one and I'm not familiar with the form factor.

The MHL cable feels a lot more solid than a micro USB. I have a couple micro usb that have gotten loose, and now just fall out of the phone if turned over, or if I hit a bump in the car. Thanks for finding a source to buy more of the MHL cables.

How long are those cables? Doesn't say on the page; unless I'm blind.
There is no such thing as an "MHL cable".
The format of the port and cable that come with the Rezound is called "EXTMicro USB".
"MHL" refers to a standard for connecting small electronics to HDTVs. It works with a regular Micro USB cable. Last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago) there are no MHL adapters that utilize EXTMicro USB connectors. Most of the ones that I've found use a regular Micro USB connector.
At this time, it's unclear exactly what the extra 7 pins in the connector in this phone are for. Other HTC phones have used them for analog audio and video output, but this doesn't appear to be supported by the rezound.
If you look at your rezound, you will see it only has the 5 pins. It does utilize the ExtMicro USB plug end/shape. If it truly had the ExtMico USB then while using the mhl adapter it could charge your phone via A/C while streaming. But it can't because the data pins are being used/ there are only 5 pins.

That's an excellent point about charging while using an MHL adapter. One could still force fast charging through software, such as what's available in Incredikernel/control, though.
On my rezound, I most definitely have contacts in the extra spots. The cable my phone came with, however, doesn't have any pins for them to contact.

You are right the phone has it, the does not cable. That is my mistake. I knew one of them didn't just was too lazy to check.

I didn't see a thread about this yet so I thought I'd make one for us to relay our experiences with different micro USB 3.0 B cables, our Galaxy Note 3 phones, and the various cases we may have tried them with.
First off, the stock Samsung cable is the smallest and lowest-profile microUSB 3.0 B cable I've seen yet, which is important because the bulkier ones are just more prominent protrusions begging to get bents or broken, damaging the connected device with it. The problem is that all the Note 3 cases act like it's a proprietary cable and they only need to design around it instead of aiming to fit a wide variety of standard cables. So far mine has not received any excessive force from any cable, but it's a concern I always have with many USB devices (USB drive in a notebook, for example). I have found that even with the stock cable the port in the phone itself frequently needs to be blown out. At least three times I have found my phone plugged in and not charging with a connection being very hard to achieve and maintain (momentarily connects when tweaked) until I blow in the port (then it's rock-solid for another week+). My port has never been forced or damaged and it does it with every cable I try until I blow, so I know that we are dealing with contamination or oxidation. The first time was before it had ever had any other cable used with it.
Next up: the Amazon Basics Premium cable.

My first one was DOA and didn't work at all unless you held it at a strange angle. The replacement worked as reliably as the original but it is too thick and bulky. I often have trouble finding a place and orientation to lay my phone when using it that doesn't put too much stress on the cable/connectors. It is NOT the kind of cable you want to carry around in your pocket or use in the car. I don't even like using it with my laptop so it's going to be my desktop charge and transfer cable exclusively. Even the connectors are bulky. Luckily, the rubber-like material around the port in my Slim Armor case flexes enough that it fits fine. Same for the Unicorn Beetle Sup Case. I still need to try my Bear Motion/Poetic bumper case and the slim Caseology case.
Even when not using USB3's faster transfer and charging features, I still prefer using it over a microUSB 2.0 B cable because it seems safer to spread the load over a bigger connector if it gets accidentally tweaked. I've repaired enough traditional microUSB 2.0 B connectors on phone PCBs and I do not want to risk damaging an MHL 3.0 version! It seems to me that a right-angle connector would be safer as it would not protrude away from the device and the cable has the chance to run along the device's exterior structure until it is far enough away to absorb and relieve most tension that would move it independently from the device. For this reason I intend to get a right-angle mUSB3 cablemy notebook that I often use in bed. So far the only one I have found is here:

I've also ordered a couple TYLT Vu wireless charging stands and the official Samsung wireless charging back to minimize my use of the port, so it looks like I'm switching to the bumper case (only one that fits the official cover). I should get a dust cover/plug for the port so that I won't have to blow it out when I do finally use it.
Another strange issue I had even with the stock cable was that it would disconnect and reconnect in USB 2.0 mode almost as soon as I enabled USB 3.0 mode and started transferring. Possibly important circumstances: I was trying to rip some 1080p video samples to check out on my first 1080p phone so I started ripping a couple BD movies to my Alienware M11x r3 (AnyDVD + Handbrake). 1080p files are large, so I figured it was as good a time as any to try to get slightly faster transfer speeds with USB3. This notebook has no optical drive so I made the rips using an external USB-powered BD drive plugged into the other USB3.0 port. It was a slimline EIDE drive in a USB2.0 enclosure, so there was a mix of USB2.0 and 3.0 devices connected to the two USB3.0 ports. When the first rip finished I started the second rip and then enabled USB3.0 on the phone to start transferring the first rip. After the problem repeated itself I tried changing cables and the problem remained. It worked fine when I tried again with only the phone connected. If that's expected behavior with a mix of 2.0 and 3.0 devices then I would have expected it to happen immediately instead of waiting until after I started a file transfer. Edit: It happened again this morning but I now know it happens even in USB2.0 mode. The BD drive was ripping while connected to the PC's native USB2.0 port and the phone was connected to one of the two USB 3.0 ports. It disconnected as soon as I started the transfer in USB3.0 mode so I restarted in 2.0 mode and it did the same thing. I had to wait for the encode to finish, so it looks like it has something to do with the MTP connection not being stable while the CPU is busy. Stupid.
I finally tried the Amazon Basics Premium micro USB 3.0 cable with the Bear Motion / Poetic bumper case and it can be made to fit. Unlike the others, you can't just push it in and expect the materials to flex enough to allow it. You have to work it in or else the material gets between the plug and the phone and prevents full insertion. I don't think it matters but I am using the official Samsung wireless charge cover battery door, which is why I switched back to the bumper case.
