CM 7 for Gen 9? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a crazy thought. CM 7 (Gingerbread) is quite a bit less demanding of memory. Android 4.x doesn't run particularly well on 512MB devices. How much magic voodoo would it take to port CM 7?

I thought about doing that but then you lose the new Google apps that are not supported by Gingerbread. I never had too many problems with my 512 MB G9 because I strip out the Archos media player and most of the Google apps. If you install a bunch of free apps that are add supported then the tablet gets really slow. Maybe using a host file to block adds might help, I used to do that but the app seems to have been removed from the Play Store. Live wallpapers and animations will also use a lot of memory, try using Holo Launcher instead of Trebuchet. Developer options --> Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, Animator duration scale --> set all to .5 helps also.

what would you do about the hard buttons?

What's the difference between touchwiz and a rom that isn't ..

I was wondering what the difference is in a touchwiz and non touchwiz rom is. What does one offer that the other doesn't?
The Touchwiz UI

Why does that contain? I can't find anything on what it is. Is it similar to sense or more like entertainment?

User interface. Helps with settings, eases twitter, Facebook and other widgets to be open and recieve live feeds on honeycomb homescreens. Adds a screen capture button which helps with forums. Just research galaxy tab 10.1 touchwiz UI. Really can't miss it.

Can The TW works on my P7510 (Chinese stock)?
Stay away from TouchWiz, is a pile of horse **** bloatware.
TouchWiz is by far the most advanced software you currently can get on a tablet. The user experience it provides is light years ahead of anything else out there, even Honeycomb 3.2.
Not only that but TouchWiz gives you access to specific hardware you cant access without it. The ability to change color temperature of the screen is a HUGE feature you can only have with toucwiz.
Here are just a few of the features you get from TouchWiz that you cant get anywhere else :
1. REAL multitasking just like in Windows. You can have TWO apps open at once on the same screen and not have to switch back and forth. There is nothing like this available in the market or in 3.2. HUGE props to Samsung for doing this.
2. Ability to change color temperature of the screen.
3. One touch wifi file access to tablet from PC <-- AWESOME
4. Sluggish menu scrolling in vanilla Honeycomb are gone! It looks like
Samsung devs used video hardware acceleration for scrolling which creates a smooth experience compared to Vanilla honeycombs laggy jumpy scrolling in may menus.
5. Awesomenew notification/settings popup menu. FAR superior to stock Honeycomb.
6. One touch screen capture button in the task bar takes a snap shot of the screen and automatically saves to a folder.
7. Lots of cool QUALITY widgets not like the junk you find in the market.
8. Motion gestures
9. Superior App Manager/ RAM manager which can run ON TOP of any app you are running.
10. BEST Music app and runs super smooth. Much better than stock H.C. or anything in the market
11. BEST Ebook reader app you can get.
12. Your tablet will run FASTEST with touchwiz. Samsung is using hardware acceleration for menus like Apple. Stock HC uses software rendering which is why its so slow and laggy. You cant get hardware acceleration if you dont have TouchWiz. No the Devs here will not be able to add it as its beyond their capabilities.
The list goes on and on. TouchWiz is simply a superior experience than stock HC. I would even dream of using my tab without it. Your tablet is incomplete and missing features to access hardware if you dont have TouchWiz.
I am really curious about changing the color temperature. How do you do it?

Thanks 5th, that is exactly what I was looking for. This is my first tablet, and Im only coming from the HTC evo. And from that I came from the HTC hero. So Im still pretty green to this.
Is it worth swapping the kernel out? I know and Im sure you know as well, doing that on android phones will help out a lot. But what about on these tabs? IS that VooDoo what its made out to be?
touchwiz is pretty cool, but the gmail and calendar sucks big time compared to the original honeycomb version. how the heck can i see week view NORMALLY like honeycomb calendar instead of zooming with pinch and zoom. c'mon!

I respect your choice, related to TouchWiz. I enjoy vanilla builds of Honeycomb and I think TouchWiz removes the Android authenticity. There is a reason why devs like PhantomHacker release their ROM's cleaned from the bloatware Samsung adds. I'm looking forward to install his vanilla 3.2 ROM on my P7510.

[Q] ios 7 multitasking tweak for android

Anyone know if there is a tweak or rom for android that allows you to add an ios 7 style multitasking tweak for android(stolen from webos). A card of running apps when you swipe up for example...
Thanks.
Do you mean like when hold home for a few seconds or the box over box button that should be to the right of home for some devices. like cm 10.1 tablets for instance?

What phone are you using, and are you using the default ROM or something custom? Android has had multi-tasking available for a long time, but opening it is different on different devices.
Maybe he is talking about the theme?
Which is also very similar to Android imho...
I'm currently using a note ll with the default rom, multitasking is okay but I didn't know if there was an alternative to a webos style multitasking where you don't have to press the home button for a few seconds, but rather do a gesture to view your cards.

there was once one called "itching thumb" but has been discontinued for a couple years now, which is a pity. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815289
there is also one for people with touchpads http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514235 but as far as i know it only works with touchpads. Maybe someone can take it and modify it to work with other hardware
as far as i know this is the closest you might find for android.

running android with no launcher app

hi all, its been a long time now since i first thought on running my phone without any homescreen/launcher app, since i am no fan of fancy animations, rather than that i prefer a phone that doesn't lag and have a decent battery life I've installed the simpliest slimest launcher i know (slim launcher) it weighs only 0.9 mb, but still it uses ram and processor to run, now given that I'm on slimkat it jumped to me again, having slim pie /notification shortcuts, ive decided to set all my apps into those tools, meaning fill up three slim pie rows with essential apps and notification shortcuts with the rest, but before i do anything i would like to read some insights from other users, possible limitations when deleting my last launcher app, and if it would/wouldn't be beneficial regarding battery life and performance, atm i see just one limitation and it's the number of apps i can install to my phone due to the limited amount of free spaces on slim pie + notification shortcuts
any thoughts would be pretty much appreciated

Well you can't run android without any launcher...
And there can never be any limitation as to the number of apps you have to install unless there is no space on your internal sd card...
As to number of widgets ,home screens, apps in pie that is limited as to which launcher and which rom you are using...
Sent from my GT-I9300
actually you can, I've managed to mess up slim launcher several times trying to make it system app and ending up with no launcher app, still phone can get phone calls, music player plays when headphone is plugged in, regarding on how many apps i can install i mean if im not able to acces them through a launcher app, i have limited spaces on which i can place it's shortcuts, on slimpie its 20 slots using normal press and long press, and notification shortcuts i don't know atm
edit I've deleted my last launcher app and it's pretty much smooth

Moto Z Droid displaying 5 icons per row? Is this possible?

Moving from a Nexus 6 to the Moto Z Droid which is running Nougat. The display shows only 4 icons/row which seems a waste of real estate versus the 5 that Nexus 6 has. I also checked out a Nexus 5X which has a similar resolution and that has 5 icons also.
Is there a way to get 5 icons/row with the GN launcher and/or without root? I did play around with DPI and font size but that didn't allow me add more icons/row.
Thanks
You'll need to use a different launcher. GN doesn't support what you're looking for.
I use Nova. Does everything! :good:
That is disappointing. I even tried the Pixel launcher and no joy. I like the GN launcher and I guess I will just have to put up with the icon limitation

You can do it with custom roms. I'm not sure if it's possible with stock but can give it a try.
Go-to settings > display > display size > small

What do you like so much about GN? In my opinion it is pretty limited in customisation.
Have you tried Nova Launcher? I bet Nova can do all that GN does and much much more... and it's light on resources as well
Yea same issue, you need to use a custom rom to fix this

I think I will just wait for an upgrade to the Z. I am on 7.0 and with Android O now in beta with some pretty cool features I hope Motorola/Verizon release an upgrade one day or I guess I will be flashing a custom ROM.
You can set the screen incons resolution under developer options.
After enabling developer options go to "drawing" section and change the value of the "Smallest width". I have setted it to 470dp and I get 5 icons per row in the menu.
I hope this would help you.

Thanks but that didn't work. I can get five icons in the app drawer but only 4 in the main screens. Tons of space between the icons though.

insane memory problem on 2gb kenzo

hello lads
i'm using 2gb kenzo with havoc os v2.9
my launcher: poco launcher (installed as system app, havoc default launcher removed)
i also removed/deleted swap region and disabled swap/zram totally because i thought apps were transferred to swap region and thats why everything was so slow to load again but i learned that wasn't the case.
my problem is this:
phone can't and doesn't use all of the available (1845mb) memory. the lowest free ram amount i have seen was ~240 mbs. when i see that both my game froze so i had to quit and phone launcher was removed from memory/app killed which takes up ~100mb ram and took 10 seconds to relaunch.
i mean if there is ~240mb free memory why is the launcher removed from the RAM!? it's only 100mb! and if there is ~240mb free memory why is my game is freezing at the first place!? i mean if there isn't enough memory game just should be force killed or frozen, whatever etc.. but there is no reason for any kind of freeze in the whole system, not the notification bar, not the launcher, not the keyboard!
also system ui (~100mb memory usage) is killed too! i can't even see the notification bar when trying to do anything else on the phone... i have to wait 5-10 seconds to load it when i swipe to open it.
when i use firefox, upon loading up a new page, free ram goes up from 400 to 700 mbs! so the phone is killing launcher, gboard and even system ui in the background to give more ram to firefox, which is ok and logical => only and if only there isn't free ram! but while system is doing that there is already 400 mbs of free ram! first those free ram should be given to the firefox, and when that is not enough system only then should start killing other apps, and should never kill apps like launcher, system ui, telephone ui, even keyboard! also there always more than 250mb is free when using firefox, but launcher, gboard, system ui is already dead at this point, i can't even take calls... and those took exactly 250 mbs total! i mean if there is always at least 250mb free ram while using firefox why is my launcher, gboard and system ui apps are killed and removed from the RAM! it doesn't make any sense to me at all.
what can we do to fix this stupid ram management? is this problem linux based or only android is like this?
thanks in advance for any kind of explaining/url that explain the problem thoroughly in technical terms
example pictures: i'll upload video if anyone wants to see how the user experience is for further investigation.

U need zram if u r on 2gb kenzo. And havoc is not good idea. Havoc has too much customisation make ram heavy. So use lighter and moderate roms like Aex.
Excrima x28 is default with zram.
