Yesterday I flashed my brand new stock Galaxy S3 i9300 with the Philz recovery, then flashed the root + busybox that was in the thread and as I thought was all ok I also flashed a custom ROM...
then I noticed that something went wrong and I don't actually have root access!
I tried reflashing philz via odin and reinstalling the zip from the recovery but nothing seems to work..
I am a newbie... I had no problem with my previous S2 and I thought was kinda the same...
what do you guys suggest to do?
thank in advance

have you followed any rooting guides, because as u said u have flashed recovery and also root + busybox, maybe u have flashed only busybox. maybe that guide was for pre-rooted device. try to flash cf-auto root from this link: http://goo.gl/kCuGFz . after successfully flashing this u will get root access..

YES suggest you read the faqs and guides before flashing .
If you flashed a custom ROM, you should have root.
Help is only a google search away.

Hey XDA,
I finally rooted my GS2 yesterday. I want to install a Custom Rom and before that I went to check CWM Recovery and found out I have version 2. I know that the latest version is v5 and that v2 doesn't have all the options v5 does.
I've searched for an answer to my question and I know I have to download the update, and flash it with Odin in the PDA section. Problem is that all the guides I've seen say: "you can now root your phone with SuperOneClick"
After I flash the CWM v5 update, do I loose root and do I have to root again?
Can you still please explain how I can update it?
Thanks!
What are you asking about .
One CWM recovery that comes via rooted flash v 4 or v 5
Or CWM manager v2-0 a phone app .

I'm already rooted but the CWM app in my phone is v2 and I need v4 or v5. After reading the "NEW HERE" guide, I found out I'm not booting into CWM Recovery but it boots into Stock Android Recovery Mode, even after I choose the option to do it in the app. I went into the CWM app and it says the Kernel is unknown.
What can I do?

Who says and where is this CWM 5 i dont think you are reading the instructions ,
After reading the "NEW HERE" guide, I found out I'm not booting into CWM Recovery even after I choose the option to do it in the app
Then that tells me you do not have a phone with CWM recovery installed .
Why well CWM MANAGER v 2-0 boots fine to CWM Recovery v 5 .
Root + CWM 5 from here flash via ODIN .

Please note once more CWM recovery is not CWM manager and vice versa .

I think I got confused.
My problem is: I can't boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery. I just can't. Yes, my phone is rooted, I did it yesterday, I know it's rooted because I can use Titanium.
I followed this guide to root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I chose this insecure kernel from CF's thread: CF-Root-SGS2_CE_XEN_KI2-v4.2-CWM4.zip
In my phone, I have an app named CWM, I click the app and it gives me the option to boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery but when I click it, it takes me to stock android recovery.
Hope this can help you help me!

That thread contains multiple ways to root, but judging by your need to flash a kernel, I presume you followed the guide which tells you to flash a stock kernel afterwards. In doing that, you removed CWM recovery.
To keep CWM recovery, you have to install a kernel which includes it (such as CF-Root). Easiest way to get it back is to just re-flash the CF-Root kernel you already downloaded.
Yes, you're right, I chose the guide that told me to flash a stock kernel afterwards. Thank you for clearing this up!
When I flash this kernel again, will I have to use S2 root to root it again? or will it remain rooted?

As the name implies, CF-Root is already rooted.
When I start CWM Manager v3.60 it comes up saying
This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-CWM v1.1 or newer. It appears you are running a different recovery. Various features have been disabled.

When I boot into recovery it shows at the top:
CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4 : : CF-v1.5
I flashed it with Odin v3.04 using file CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar
I've tried Odin v1.85 and I've tried reflashing with a tar file from a different source.
I've tried the recovery-cf-cwm-i9300-1.5-gsm.tar from the Samsung Galaxy S3 ToolKit
Also, I've read a bunch of guys on the [03.07.2012] CF-Root 6.4 - SuperSU+CWM5.5+CWMManager thread (starting from post 332 onwards) who have the same problem but I can't see any reported solution.
Any ideas how I get round this error, guys?
Many thanks.

Im really new to this but willing to learn, I used this root file CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4 (2) and it came with CWM after rooting. Iv Setup recovery through ROM Manager to Clockworkmod 6.0.3.6 and I no longer get an error when opening ROM Manager but still get an error when opening the CWM App but if it is now redundant I wont worry.
Just backed up backed up current ROM (stock OS rooted) to check all is ok and seems to have saved it fine so its working as it should.
Just downloading a custom ROM on laptop now so want to get it right before i flash it

You dont need CWM manager or ROM manager. Its best to use it manually.

your link says you have two files. cwm and busybox. did you install both?
even if you have stock recovery, its not an issue as long as you're rooted. If you're going to install a custom kernel, you'll get a custom version of CWM anyways.
How can I install TWRP on my unrooted Note? and Which is the easiest way to install it?
Searching through the forums I haven't found any specific instructions but if I've read correctly it seems that through ODIN is the easiest way.
Where can I get the latest ODIN for the Note i717?
Could someone be so kind to provide some instructions and links?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
You don't need to be rooted to flash a rom or install a recovery. Root is for access to the system files of the rom after it boots and loads.

How can I install a recovery without having to root my phone first? What's the procedure
All the instructions I've found require the Note to rooted first.
Rom already on sdcard.
Recovery tar in Odin.
Flash recovery with Odin
Boot into new recovery and flash rom.
Rom will be rooted once booted.
Bingo, the EASIEST way th go from bones stock to custom rom.

thanks for this , man..my wife's Note was never rooted, and she wants it done, so I will try this way..
sounds waaaaay too easy though!
I didn't mention that that this method will trip the flash counter
As I don't give one care about what my flash counter says unless I get a hardware defect within my year of ownership I didn't mention that before.
There are ways to reset it so don't even worry about until the day comes where you need to.

flash the CWM tar first, and after you go through all the other steps, and are rooted, download and install TWRP..
Like the above poster said, but skip the root step. So CWR using Odin and occasionally, then TWRP by using CWR, done.
Ok..... So we need the CWR.tar, for Odin...
Any links please?
Then.... We need the TWRP file to put on our SD...
Any link to the TWRP too please?
Thanks for all your help...
In keeping the OP's note un-rooted...
See the super everything thread. The tar file is there. The TWRP zip is in the original development thread.
Hey guys. Thanks for the responses.
I see that some of you are recommending to odin CWR and then use CWR to flash TWRP.
On the TWRP page there is this link to the following page http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/sgh-i717/ which has the different TWRP files and there is a TWRP .tar file. File name: openrecovery-twrp-2.3.2.3-quincyatt.img.tar
Can I just odin the above file instead of odin CWR first?
Where can I find the latest ODIN? I've looked for downloads but haven't found it. A link would be much appreciated.
Once again, thanks.

I tried rooting my S3 using CF-Autoroot, using Odin. After the update CWM doesn't open saying the binaries are outdated and I have to manually reroot. I would like to do this too, can I just confirm I have this correct?
1) Flash Philz recovery using odin
2) Reboot phone in to recovery
3) Flash cf-auto root file from recovery
4) reboot and go in to recovery and flash supersu 1.8 zip file
So two files are flashed using recovery after flashing philz recovery with odin?
Thanks, I fixed it by downloading CF Autoroot again, and wiping my phone in recovery mode to factory defaults, and flashing using odin. It did the tick. . It was mentioned in another thread, but didn't work when I tried. I think the factory reset fixed it. Though I am not sure.
