I am quite new on android and I have never rooted.
Now I have decided to root my HTC aria but it is upgraded to 2.2 through OTA.
I have Googled for a while, and it seems that rooting is not possible on aria 2.2 OTA upgrade.
Is it true?
If yes, am I going to master reset (factory data reset) it to root?
Or are there any other ways?

p.s. sorry for poor English I am from HK
Edit: I have already downgraded it to 2.1 Eclair but the version of hboot is still 1.02.
Also, I still can't root it.
That is correct, you can't root your phone if you downloaded the 2.2 update, there is no way to root it as of yet and there is noway to downgrade
So I still can't root after factory reset?

No, you cannot
I have already downgraded my phone to 2.1 Eclair.
But I still can't root it.
Is it because the version of hboot?
Yes it is.

No there is currently no way to root the newer HTC devices that have installed the Froyo update, including now the AT&T Aria. HTC has modified the HBOOT loader code on all of these devices and removed the previous root exploit that was used. At this point in time a new rootable exploit has not been found, so you are out of luck.

Why would HTC (= not gay) allow ATT (= gay) to dictate something line locking the phone to a specific ROM and not letting users continue to root the thing?

AT&T had nothing to do with this. HTC is the one that has changed the HBOOT loader code on all of their devices, not just the AT&T Aria. If you bought an unlocked HTC Aria from Asia and installed the Froyo 2.2 update, you would have the same issue.

Yes indeed. But I don't get it why they are pressed to change the HBOOT like this. Someone will end-up cracking it anyway. But anyway...
Dude, you can still tether w/o paying by creating apn settings for MediaNet.
You can find info about APN settings in the forum or download an app that can backup apn settings (I use HiAPN) and access your phone via computer and open up the XML file. In that file it should have the apn settings of your carrier (password, proxy, etc.) Make a new APN setting with the same values you just read. Please note that MCC is 310 and MNC is 410.
Has anyone figured out how to root the new aria HBOOT ? Or are they still working on it if anyone is working on it.
as far as I know, many people had this mistake and had to wait for developer to solve it one day

This is a common problem with a lot of the HTC devices and is not unique to the Aria upgrade, so once a solution is discovered, hopefully it can be applied to the Aria also.

Security of the platform. If you openly allow people to gain root access to your devices, no one will want to carry your device, nor develop software for it.
Rooting allows
-method to circumvent tethering restrictions
-file browsing the phone which allows easy pirating of software
Me, I want to root for the first reason.
im also facing this issue
Aria official android 2.2, HBOOT 1.02, SHIP ON
not able to root it, waiting for someone talented working out a solution...
So....it's installed on T-Mobile Amaze 4G.
http://www.tmonews.com/2011/12/list-of-currently-sold-tmobile-devices-with-carrier-iq-software-preinstalled/
Do the Dev's remove it from their ROM's?
As a Canadian Wind Mobile customer, I found out that Wind (or any Canadian carrier...that I know of) does not install CIQ in their phones....must be a USA carrier thing.
BUT...I purchased my T-Mobile Amaze 4G weeks before they were released in Canada.
So, does anyone know how to identify the CIQ app that is supposedly running on our TMO Amaze phones?
Other than flashing a Wind or Telus ROM, does anyone know how to remove CIQ on stock ROM's?
Thanks guys!!
To find out if career iq is present on your phone, first download the carrier iq detector from the android market. It is made by lookout labs.
If carrier iq is present on your device the app will tell you..
To remove carrier iq, your phone must be rooted. Then follow the steps below
1.)Download super manager from the market
2.) In the setting menu of the app enable root function
Then click on switch system r/w in the options menu. This would enable you to change or modify system files.
3.) Tap the search button within the app and search for "iq"
4.) If u have carrier iq installed you would see it in the search results. It would be a .apk file
5.) To delete just long press the file and click delete.
6.) Restart the phone and you should be carrier iq free
I'm running Amaze Quicksense, and the Carrier IQ detector shows that I do not have it on my device.

its fully removed from beastmod
You can also run TrevE's logging tester/removal app after rooting and/or flashing a new ROM. The app itself is free on XDA and the pro key is a dollar which allows removal of CIQ. IT'S ONLY FOR HTC Devices (anyone reading this using a Samsung or other non HTC Device please DO NOT USE this as it may cause a soft brick) You can find the removal key in the market.
Definitely NOT being sent from my HTC Amaze4G until Christmas Day.....

Ok...so Lookout is telling me my stock TMO ROM "has" Carrier IQ installed.
Now the tricky part.....:
I have not rooted/unlocked my Amaze since I purchased it.
Problem is...I foolishly installed the Dec. 12th HTC update.
So have I now screwed myself from unlocking my bootloader?
Reason I am asking is because I've read a couple of posts here stating that people have installed the latest HTC OTA and now cannot unlock their bootloaders using the HTCDev site.
Any comments/concerns/corrections?
Thanks again to all!!....this Amaze community if fantastic!!!
followed darrils insrtuctions
deleted the apk
then deleted the other file with a gear by it system something idk why
phone crashed rebooted and seems ok
thanks!

Uhmmm.....that's not what the Change Log says for 2.1.2
Can someone confirm this?
The OTA update from HTC removed CIQ. Since xboarder's ROMs are based off the latest code from HTC, then they will not have CIQ.

Not sure it's actually been removed, it seems it's only disabled. the application is not listed as running anywhere, but he ciq detector app says it exists.

I installed the December 12 update and was still able to unlock my bootloader using htc dev webpage... However the ZERG one click root method didn't work for me so I had to flash root using recovery...
Perfect!,,,,thanks for that Darll.
I've done all the OTA updates and it still says i have the ciq installed.
my phone just prompted me about an att software update. anyone else get this? wondering what (if any) changes there are.
ran the update. one thing ive noticed is there is a new thing in power settings. something called application monitor. you can turn it off and on. it says it can notify you if apps are consuming extra power. interesting.....
Can you check the software build number and post it here?
what is the software version and all other misc. info???
android and sense are still the same
software number is 1.19.502.1 710RD
HTC SDK 4.63
Build number is 1.19.502.1 CL161932 release-keys
Baseband version is 2.14.55.01_18.21.95.55L

Just got it and installing it as we speak. Mine has an unlocked bootloader with root. Better not remove root or I'm gonna have to flash stock RUU and go from there. I'll post back.

Hello, I own the AT&T HOX+ also and was asked to update. Any idea what it's for?
My update
Updated. It restarted my phone. TWRP started so I made a backup and did a system reboot. Phone claims to be updated.
Software # 1.15.502.9 710RD
HTC SDK API level 4.63
Baseband 1.09.55.17_18.20.95.55L
Build 1.15.502.9 CL122548 release keys
Numbers that are different than an early post.

I thought mine was updated too, but the build number doesn't seem correct. A few posts back someone says it should be Build 1.19.x

It is AT&T software update which says "current software is up to date"
I have an inherent distrust of everything AT&T says
Updated
I just updated had stock phone never rooted or anything. My current software after update is:
Software number
1.19.502.1 710RD
HTC Sense
4+
Android Version
4.1.1
Baseband
2.14.55.01_18.21.95.55L
You folks with failed updates, the issue is you must have a stock recovery in order to apply a stock update OTA.
Bootloader is unlocked via HTCDEV so you will always be able to unlock it again if an hboot update is applied.
This is great news as its the newest build so devs have new toys

since i bought my htc ONE that it hasn't updated OTA anytimes. i often check software update, but it inform to me no available update. so i have to update it by PC or zip file.
my ONE is unlocked by code when i bought, because i am living in Viet Nam.
You wont get any updates from att using another network in another country

As has already been said. You can only get OTA updates for an ATT phone over the ATT network. It will not work over other networks since they do not supply the update in the first place. The update comes from ATT.
Furthermore it would need to be stock even if you wanted to get an OTA here in the US. With it being unlocked it would still not receive updates.
If you have S-OFF, you can manually flash ota update.zip via stock recovery.
Actually I have the same problem, but in my case i AM connected to AT&T network.... any ideas on whats going on?

If your phone is android 4.1.2 you need to flash the RUU to 4.3 then you'll get the OTA
