[Q] Stock s4 home button default not sticking - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys,
I have an interesting problem. I tried searching but couldn't find any help.
For some reason, my home button defaults are not sticking anymore. I use go launcher, and have for a long time, but now, seemingly out of nowhere, it continuously asks me what home launcher to use whenever I press the home button.
I've tried clearing defaults, uninstalling go launcher, no matter what it still won't stick , even when I set twlaumcher to the default.
Does anyone have any idea how I can remedy this issue without a factory reset?
Thanks!
EDIT: I am stock, not rooted.

Bump
Anyone?
Thanks!

[Q] please help my home button is disabled, not a hardware issue

My home button works in clockwork but does not work when I've fully booted into android. Home does not work in any app, the peacock 'n' on the touchscreen work in the web browser but some apps like Pocket Legends require me to shut down the tablet to exit.
Rom is stock 3588.
Background: I recently had the 'force close' problem, and my PC was unusable because of home remodeling, so I couldn't do any fix that required a computer. At work I had read that clearing some information I.e. contacts could help, so I tried that when I got home. I also read in settings/applications I could clear contacts data, so I tried that. No love for either fix, but I still had no home PC access, so I went ahead and cleared data from a bunch of system apps (thinking that If I had to re-flash anyways it wouldn't matter). Maybe that disabled my home key. I also deleted a few apps, and I know some apps disable the home key. Maybe deleting an app when I was having framework problems disabled the home key? My home pc is running again and I used another solution that did not require flashing or partitioning: I installed clockwork, ran 'fix permissions' and the force close issue is fixed but still no home button. If I boot into clockwork the home button works fine (after all, you need the home button in clockwork). A reboot, or ten reboots, will not solve the problem.
I have done an internet search for 'disable android home button' and 'enable'. I have found apps for button remapping but I would rather not use an app for a bandaid.
Anyone have any advice that does not include 'flash a new ROM'?
Edit: the borked home button happened before I used clockwork, so I don't suspect clockwork. Also, when I press the power button to turn off the tab I get two options: power off, or sleep. There used to be more options, I forget what they were because I never used them but perhaps one was airplane mode. Maybe whatever disabled the home button also changed teh power button menu options.
Mike, were you able to fix your problem?

I lived without the hardware button working for about 3 weeks, and a couple of days ago I booted the tab and it took me to the stock, first time setup. ug! apps wiped, and force closes, but media and app save data was still there. and the HOME BUTTON WORKED AGAIN! i also had all four options back in the shutdown menu. I did 'fix permissions' and reinstalled all my apps; the app save data was still there, but afaik titanium will only back up app data if the app is installed. backed up apps and turned those leamons into leamonade by switching to vegan 5.1.1 with vtl launcher. way better tablet experience and angry birds still works.

Home button not working

After installing the HKTW Gingerbread, my lockscreen has disappeared, and the home button isn't working. It's tedious, to the say the least, to have to press the back button about 10 times to get to the home screen.
I've looked online, and it seems people just had to enable the lockscreen again. I can't find the option to disable it or enable it.
From what I remember reading last night some people had success getting their home button working after either restoring data or taking out their battery/putting back in.
I didn't back up data :/
I've pulled the battery several times, to no effect. Its quite annoying lol

Bump, can no one help me with this? Or should I just flash back?
Me too
I'm running 1.83 with an unlocked bootloader. My problem presents itself as no lock screen, home button and search buttons do not work for single press or long press (but do still provide haptic feedback), and holding down the power button only gives the option to power off, not airplane mode or silent.
Factory Data Reset fixes the problem until the power turns off.
Did you restore system data with titanium?
i had the same prob and had pulled the batter 1/2 a dozen times before i saw this thread. didn't help, so titanium to the rescue. not sure what it would take to fix it aside from that, but that was absurd and aggravating to no end, fsck that.
The reason I asked the question was because when I restored all of my system data, this happened to me. I started over again but this time I didn't restore my finger printer scanner data and for the first four packages with "accounts" in their name. Now I have a completely working 2.3.4 with the proper AT&T market.
I didn't do a TiBu before I went to Gingerbread, and had the same problems. Interestingly enough, after installing the build.prop fix, a few hours later I locked the screen and when I turned it back on the lock screen was back.
mine is completely gone too
i had this problem when attempting to restore data via titanium backup. reflashed and downloaded apps fresh, and no problems.
Were you able to figure it out, our did you reflash?
Can anyone please upload the titanium backup for system data?

HOME key works but doesnt take me to home, help!

Hi! I got a problem with my S3 (totally standard, no custom rom). It started yesterday... basically if i press home key, sometimes it takes me to the home screen, sometimes it takes me to other widget pages. The odd thing is that it's not always the same page... sometimes it's the 2nd from the left, sometimes it's the 3rd from the right... and so on. It seems to depend on what screen i was on last when i launched the application.
What happened? Anyone else had this odd behaviour? I already tried a softreset... doesn't work. ;(
Help me... thanks!

make a backup using titanium backup or Go Backup, and do a factory reset, then restore all your apps and settings.
this may help and shouldn't take longer than half hour.
It does sound like a software glitch that can be fixed with a reset.

Error, Unfortunately touchwiz home has stopped.

So after messing with this phone for the last few day I decided to do a full reset and wipe everything clean. I did so and after going through the set up process I couldn't get to the home screen. I just kept getting the error that touchwiz stopped. Luckily the restore loaded nova so I could get to the home screen to try and figure this out.
I tried everything from clearing data from the apps menu to booting into recovery and clearing cache. I Googled the error and found nothing I hadn't tried. I then did another master reset and it still won't load to touchwiz home.
Not sure what to do other than exchange the phone. Anyone have any idea?

Hey there,
I'm having the exact same issue and am BEYOND frustrated because usually I can find an answer on Google but it seems like no one seems to know what causes this, but many people have the problem. Did you happen to find a solution?
Brand new S6 Edge. Out of the box.
I've got this issue too.
Here's the steps I took.
No mobile connection as waiting for carrier to transfer account to new sim.
Connected to wifi.
Touched my S4 to the back to transfer accounts. Entered Samsung account details, requested restore.
Restore completes.
Set up finger print password.
Touchwiz has stopped error. Click OK. It repeats. again, and again.....
Power off, power on. Still get the touchwiz error.
Great out of the box experience. This is not good at all.
I don't know about the warranty in your country.
My advice is just reinstall the stock rom. It will clean all the problems.
My compromise so far...
The only way I've been able to use my phone so far in the last 12 hours since taking it out of the box is to set it up in "Easy Mode", which for a seasoned android user is not fun, but makes the phone usable. If not for that, I'm having the exact same problem with the error message and not being able to even get to my home page. Since turning my phone on I haven't seen my pages in standard mode yet. Hopefully I'll be able to contact someone today about this since I got the phone set up pretty late last night before noticing the error.

Stuck in guest mode or something like it

Can't figure out how I activated this mode on my phone but now everything is limited.
My lock screen is disabled, no notifications will show in the drop down (but will vibrate and LED light up when I do get a message or an app update), home and recent apps button do not respond (only the back button), some settings are disabled (developer options/factory reset/lock screen). I can still access most apps/information.
Never plugged my phone into computer nor tried downloading any 3rd party apps.
Any help besides master reset would be great!
Wondering if you found a cause or solution to this. My wife's phone just started exhibiting the same symptoms, and so far I've found nothing. T-mobile's only suggestion is to do a warranty replacement, but I'd prefer not to.
If you did a hard reset, did that work?
FYI, after doing some more research, I found a solution to the problem. Apparently some kind of setup activity was stuck, and there is a workaround that gets things working again. I did the Nova Launcher workaround found here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/moto-e-2015/673227-problems-marshmallow-moto-e2-any-help.html
Hope this helps.

Is there a solution that doesn't involve the use of Nova Launcher and it doesn't involve dealing with the Setup Wizard apps (short of a reset) as I don't have the Setup Wizard appear in Nova Launcher.
