[Q] Galaxy S3 Boot Loop Help - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, my Galaxy S3 is stuck on a boot loop.
It's a rooted S3, forgot what firmware. I think it's the latest one whichever that is. I used Odin.
It will not go into recovery or download mode no matter how many times I have tried. And will not connect to my computer at all, tried connecting to Odin and Kies but still nothing. Tried everything I could think of.
When going into download mode, after pressing continue, it shows a loading screen with the Android in the middle and status on top left. Then goes back to the boot loop after ~3 seconds.
When going into recovery mode, it begins to load recovery then reboots into the boot loop after about ~3 seconds.
About 30 min before the boot loop began, a notification popped up saying my SD Card is damaged and asked if I wanted to format it. I declined and rebooted my phone and it went away. So I assumed everything was okay. Then after charging my phone I unplugged it and it worked fine. Locked it, then tried to unlock it again but nothing happened. Held the power button then I see the boot loop begin.
I have crucial data on my phone that I need and would prefer being able to save everything before formatting.
So, what next? Any ideas?

Hello, i do have the same problem as the topic starter. Is there someone who has any suggestions what to do?

Read the post you actually quoted, it suggests what to do.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk

Try to remove the battery and connect it again for sometimes, and try to go to download mode, and not to Recovery mode.
If you try several times you will succeed to enter into the download mode, then you can enter into the recovery mode also, and if you wipe Delvik cache the phone starts to work normally. I encountered this problem 3 times that's because of some conflicts in operation of Android. Something like what happened some months ago in WhatsApp.

[Q] Odin is flashing several hours...

I've flashed my Galaxy S2 with Odin several times and it has worked fine until yesterday, when I tried to flash again, and everything just froze.
I followed the normal instructions for flashing and the phone just stopped at the "downloading" screen where it says, "Do not turn of target!!".
So it has been, for several hours now. The Odin window on my computer seems to be waiting... but for what? Will it ever time out?
Is it normal that a flash session can take several hours?
Is it safe to interrupt it?

Odin will flash, takes less than 5 minutes.
Is there any data running that you can see? I mean at the bottom left. I would suggest you turn off the phone, battery pull, wait for 5 minutes, and reflash back.
If it semi bricked, use JIG to revive it.
Either way, you can't be letting the phone there for the next few days etc right?
Did you click Start in Odin??
Although i don't have an s2(will be getting one soon) did you try to reset your pc? When i was flasing my sgsl i was stuck in this situation where odin seems to freeze everytime. I restarted my pc and poof, flashed without a problem
Edit: was flashing successful? If so maybe you should follow the instruction from the post below.

This might sound stupid but did you have 'auto-reboot' checked? It happened to me once even though I have flashed hundreds of times. Odin was still open after flashing a kernel and never reset.
Start was clicked - yes.
Re boot was checked - yes.
I reset my computer and restarted my phone and - now it's still frozen, but with an icon on the center showing three icons in a line. First is a phone, second is a exlamation mark and third is a computer. Yiipiiiee. It doesn't boot. I can't get into recovery mode. Download mode does work however, but still the same behaviour. It freezes if I try to flash it.
Now what? Where is that reset-button which resets the phone and clears its brain down to original mode? A simple "brain wash" would be nice.
Is there anyway out of this "freeze of death" ?
Flash CWM kernel, download CM7 rom, copy it on SDCard (mount USB storage in CWM, connect to PC via USB, copy ROM), flash ROM from CWM

Try to go into recovery mode and factory reset and clear cache and try flashing again (make sure you are on download mode)
Sent from my GT-I9003 using XDA Premium App
Hold power button to off it (hold a lil longer for this).
Then Go into recovery mode (power, home button and volume up at same time). Try do wipe all data, cache and even dalvik. Reboot and see if that works.
Alternatively, at the same place, go into restore backup.
The man said: "I can't go into recovery mode"

Recovery mode doesn't work - nope. But thanks anyway. It's nice to see that people at least try to help. Big hugs to you all.
If I try to flash CWM, I come into the same freeze again. Mindbending stuff ala Samsung, huh. They clearly don't make idiot-safe products. I'm stuck. My next phone might be a StarTAC...
Has happened to me before. KIES was opened. I closed all KIES files and the flashing fun started again~
Good point, make sure Kies isn't running when using Odin!
Also, now that you've flashed CWM, can't you boot on it?
Kies is not running and whatever I flash - it freezes. The green progress bar in Odin reaches maybe 1 cm, but no blue progress bar is visible on the phone as usually happens when flashing. It just says, "Downloading... Don't turn off target!!"
Am I slowly heading towards the brutal-axe-method?
Sounds like the NAND is damaged to me, but I'm no expert...
"NAND" means? Why does it sound like it's damaged? How can it get repaired?
NAND is the flash chip (internal sdcard). Seems that its damaged because you're unable to fully flash it.
I don't think you can have that repaired (if the NAND is truly damaged, like I said I'm no expert), you'd have to get the phone replaced.
With all respect, let's hope you aren't an expert, but better. But has anyone else interrupted a flash process and went though a "freeze"?
I'm looking for a way to reset the phone to use only what was burnt into ROM from first delivery. I just can't accept that it is so easy to mess up a phone, and I doubt Samsung would be so crazy not to build it with a rescue kinda last savior. Am I totally naive? Is my baby dead? :'(
lol I hope for you that I'm wrong also!

Something similar had happened with me too. The phone was stuck b/w flashing with odin. And the startscreen was showing those 3 icons. It was soft bricked.
But I then finally fixed it by flashing CF and then a ROM

[Q] [SOLVED] Stuck on Vibrant/Samsung Boot Screen

I recently flashed the new ICS Passion v11 and this first flash was giving me problems...so I went back into recovery and wiped data, cache partition, and Dalvik cache. I accidentally messed up and rebooted before reinstalling the .zip file and now my Vibrant is stuck at the first boot screen and will not go into cwm recovery. So is there any hope left for my phone? Please help!
Don't worry. Just flash back to stock using Download mode.

I tried getting into download mode but it still just keeps cycling the same Vibrant boot screen. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but if I'm not mistaken it is Vol Down + Power right?
Few things.
First. Under your avatar is a Verizon picture. Are you using the Vibrant or the Facinate? They are different and Facinate ROMs don't work on Vibrant phones and vice versa.
Second. See below.
Make sure you have ODIN OPEN with admin privileges!
1.) Take off your back cover, remove your sim & mirco sd card.
2.) Remove your battery.
Make sure you have the USB plugged into your PC but NOT your phone!
3.) Hold the volume buttons.
4.) Put the battery in.
5.) Put the USB in.
You don't necessarily need the download mode image to be present. As long as you are getting the COM ID to light up yellow in ODIN, just flash back to stock like normal.

Yes, I am using the Vibrant. I was with T Mobile but I switched to Verizon. I was planning on giving this phone with ICS Passion flashed on it to a friend of mine who is still with T Mobile. Thanks for the post about how to get into download mode. I will try it as soon as I get some time to mess with it today.
I have answers!
Hey. I was having this exact problem and I solved it!
Basically, when it goes into a bootloop, all you have to do it take out the battery, pop it back in, and reflash it again. I had this problem for almost all my flashing even odin'ing back to froyo I had to do twice because it froze.
Here was my process:
I went through the process of going into going to Froyo with Odin (twice sometimes if it froze) then flashing CM7(Twice because of a boot loop) and then flashing ICS PAssion V12 (Twice because of boot loop)
Now it works perfect! Also, no need to wipe data/factory reset/cache partition/dalvik cache after coming out of the bootloop. simply take out the battery, go back into recovery and flash it again. should work!

It's Vol Down + Vol Up + Power. then you can let go as soon as you see the word "Vibrant" in white. should take you into recovery
Thank you to everyone that helped me out, especially to you Woodrube. Your post really helped me get things going. I finally got my phone into download mode and flashed back to the stock Eclair firmware with Odin. I then went back into recovery, flashed CM7, and proceeded to flash ICS Passion v11. It took me a couple of tries with all of this because I figured out that the ICS update file somehow got corrupted (Possibly when I flashed the stock rom?), so I just re-downloaded the file and flashed and it worked fine.

Bootloop From Hell - Restarting After 4 Seconds USB Jig No Help - What Next?

My i9300 running Foxhound 2.5 is stuck in a bootloop that restarts itself after 4 seconds no matter which mode I start it in. With a USB jig plugged in it will boot into download mode, Odin will recognize it, and then it will automatically restart itself again.
I was running Foxhound 2.5 since May with almost no issues (a few weeks ago it was stuck in a bootloop for a few minutes then booted just fine), and haven't changed any settings recently aside from some updates to apps via Play,
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my phone working again? Or at the very least get it to appear that it is stock? I did a lot of searching, but couldn't come up with any answers for this specific problem.
Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the reply. I've tried with and without sim and sd cards. I've tried booting into recovery, and it simply restarts itself time and again. It's very frustrating.
EDIT: Manged to start formating, but it also just restarted itself. Also, oddly one of the restarts just showed the Foxhound boot screen for a moment, which is new. Before it was just the Samsung screen.
Doesnt seem like you have any choice but to send it in for repair.

[Q]S3 bootloop, no recovery nor download mode

I'm using v40 of temasek unofficial cm11, Boefflea version 11 kernel.
while I was using my phone, the phone suddenly went into a reboot and started the boot-loop, even when I pull the battery out and put it back in it starts booting immediately and goes into the boot-loop , whenever I try to go into download mode or recovery mode, once or twice I will be able to reach it, but 3 seconds in, it restarts and goes into the boot loop again (I can't choose between restarting or going into download mode)
would a USB jig help me getting into the download mode or will it be 3 seconds in and restarts?
would a service center help me retain my data as I need them?
Thank you.
momentarily I've managed to be able to access download mode and the laptop started making a sound trying to identify the device, too bad the battery fell off (or the phone restarted) lol
anyways I still need help because I couldn't get into any of them
If the phone starts the moment a battery is inserted then usually the power button is stuck -try giving it a wiggle, or get it replaced.

yeah will do that once this gets fixed lol ..
for some awkward reason, I found out that once I pull out the battery I can use download mode
what should I download?
I tried flashing CWM but I get back to the bootloop ... should I install a newer bootloader?
No, bootloader is irrelevant to firmware. You would be best to flash a full stock rom with odin then factory reset and see if it will boot. I would suspect the power cycling may have caused partition problems if recovery got wiped.

which would mean I would lose all the data in the previous cm11 right?
I'm trying my best to flash a recovery but I think it got wiped for good.. I'm trying to flash it over and over again .. (I unplug the battery once I'm in download mode to prevent the sudden restart) .. before I flashed the CWM through odin I was able to go into a glimpse of a recovery mode, now I can't seem to see it at all...
is there a way to just copy the data (mostly pictures) through odin or adb with my phone current state?

only through recovery mode or hoping your phone would suddenly connect after many boots lol
I don't think that will be my case .. oh well
as long as I can get my phone working again
going back to stock rom didn't fix the issue. can't access anything yet.
any help?
if anyone is reading this, I've been looking everywhere for a stock rom with pit file, I think that's the problem I'm facing since I have different bootloaders and different modes, somewhere around that I jacked my partitions and I think this would help putting it all back
I've found ones for android 4.1 but nothing of 4.3 .. since I came from 4.3 stock rom and then 4.4 kitkat temasek I think 4.1 won't help me at all
time to go to a service center I guess.
OK this is weird...
after I gave up I put my phone on a recover firmware that for some bizarre reason brought it back to life!!! I just put the phone back and left .. 5 hours later it was on and working.. I was able to access the phone for a brief moment.. but for some reason again I wasn't able to get the touch screen to work... I was able to raise the volume.. restart the phone.. but nothing on touch screen..
then it went back to the dead state...
any ideas?

[Q] I-9300 bootloop and no recovery

Hello,
I have a S3 which is stuck in a bootloop at the samsung logo.
when i turn it on it shows the logo for some seconds then the screen goes black and the logo re-appears.
i can not boot into recovery mode, but download mode is working without a problem every time.
i tried flashing stock firmwares with odin and also tried kies emergency firmware recovery. the flashing always went without any problem, but it had effect. whatever i try, i am never able to boot into recovery and still stuck in the bootloop.
in some tries after flashing the screen just shows the samsung logo forever, but after rebooting it once it then is stuck in a bootloop again (shows the logo - screen goes black - shows the logo...)
i also tried flashing TWRP and CWM via odin, but again i can never boot into recovery mode.
what should i try next?
thx alot for any helpful comment

You can Try this:
1.) Pull out battery
2.) Put it in again
3.) Press Vol up + home + power
4.) When the Samsung Logo appears let it off
I think you press the Buttons too long.

i really tried everything, it's not working. btw with i am stuck at the very first image, where it says "samsung Galaxy sII GT-I9300".
i dont think it's just the way i press the buttons because i can reach it on my s1 and s2 without a problem, it's just not working on this device.
could some setting like "nand erase all" in odin help? in other threads there is sometimes mentioned that the internal file system might be screwed up and in those cases a simple odin reflash does not help anymore...
Nand erase will usually hard brick it. Try the rescue firmware from general forum, sticky thread. Follow the guide exactly as it includes a pit file.

thx, but i already did that (multiple times) and flashing via odin always succeeds. then the phone reboots and is stuck at the first samsung galaxy s.. screen. twice i managed somehow to get into recovery (after flashing cwm6) but it then randomly rebooted.
and i dont think that the power button is stuck because when i am in download mode it is perfectly fine it never reboots itself unexpectedly.
Had a similar issue on my tab2 p3100. It all happened when I tried flashing a custom recovery from rom manager.
A bad flash of anything related to recovery or bootloader could be a probable cause.
I remember a knowledge share on one of the threads describing this issue and as mentioned on it all I had to do is this:
1) switch off the device and plug in the charger. This would light up the display showing you the charging status. The status has to show if at least your bootloader part of the phone is fine.
2) plug out the charger and immediately press the three buttons (home + vol up + power) get into recovery mode. This step has to work and help you get to recovery mode.
***Note : the interval within which this step has to be performed is too short since the display would turn off immediately as soon as you plug out the charger. A bit tricky too so you have to be fast. If this misses getting you into recovery, pull out the battery and put it back again. Repeat step1 and 2 again.
3) upon successfully getting into recovery, perform wipe data, cache and select reboot phone from option available on recovery again.
Allow the device to boot. This could take a while since you have performed a data wipe and may prompt for first time set up.
I was able to restore functionality on my tab after these steps and like ppl learn from their mistakes, I then learnt that recoveries and bootloaders are things that needs to be done with a pc only.
Worth a try if you have tried other alternatives and found no go. may help. Who knows..
all the best.
thats also not working. i tried to get into recovery since two days now...
i also tried the steps from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/solved-pit-bricked-dead-problem-gt-t2535367
but again, after i flash the cf-root (successfully) the phone does neither boot into recovery by itself nor can i do it by hand...
its crazy... in download mode i can see the model number (GT-I9300) and i thought as long as the model number is there and i can enter download mode there should be a way to recover the device.
but i cannot think of anything to try that i have not done yet
If the rescue firmware didn't help then it looks like the emmc chip is damaged.

Same here, still didn't found how to fix it.. I guess our motherboard just died..
Howewer I have a solution that "almost" worked for me.
Get a stock firmware in odin and turn on Nand erase and T-flash
When it's done phone reboots and you'll see just "Downloading..." mode when you turn it on.
Then got to Kies and Select firmware recovery...
Enter s/n and model name and wait for the flash to complete.
With it , I got past boot logo and actually booted into android but the phone crashed because I guess I have a memory issue..
Well , gl. If you don't find anything else helpful , try going with this method..
