This problem started for the first time around December 2012 and hasn't gone away since.
Here's the description of the problem:
Whenever I play HD videos in youtube they start displaying lots of artifacts, both in fullscreen and normal screen (the attached thumbnails show this problem).
Same thing happens when I watch HD videos using the stock player, although with less intensity.
If I continue watching the videos for a few minutes the phone will just reboot by itself.
It happens with any video that is HQ (possibly some problem with H264?).
It also happens with 3rd party video players.
And here's what doesn't make the problem occur:
None of the above problems happen when I downgrade to Gingerbread.
ICS - Play the videos ok in youtube with HQ option disabled.
ICS - Play ok non HQ videos with the stock player.
This is what I have already tried since then:
Full formats, resets, repairs and wipes.
Use different firmware versions.
Use original stock branded firmware via official updates.
GPU rendering off and on.
Adobe flash player uninstalls and updates.
Ugraded and downgraded youtube.
With and without root.
Installed newer Adreno 205 drivers.
Use safe mode.
My current phone specs:
Xperia Neo MT15i
Android 4.0.4
FTF 4.1.B.0.587
Kernel 2.6.32.9-perf
Operator TMN PT
Locked Bootloader
Rooted

I really need your help, I have been trying to fix this for almost a year now and I still haven't found anything anywhere that could fix this and I can't stand Gingerbread. I want to use ICS without having these problems whenever I try to play HQ videos, hope that someone here can give me a hand with this, please.

Hi guys! I apologize for my bad English.
My Neo restarts when watching videos in mp4 (1280x720). It also reboots when recording HD video. This problem only for new firmware (368, 283, 42). On older firmware versions (181, 145) fine.
The problem is with all mp4 videos (which are 1280x720 and above). If you view these videos in other players in the program mode, then all is well.
In general, this problem only on the new firmware. And only with the video in mp4 format. Maybe this is a problem in the hardware. But why did the old firmware so good?
Help please. Maybe a tweak is needed, I do not know. Thanks to all
Advise anything?
Did you try smaller mp4 video than 1280x720?
Try 480x854 video.
Yes, I've tried. Problems only with 1280x720 or higher. If the resolution is less, then all is well. The problem also when recording video at 1280x720. If you set the resolution lower, the record is good
Hmm ... try repair via Sony Ericsson PC companion but first save your contacts and etc. maybe it can help, becouse i think it is SW problem.
i think is hardware problem.
I have tried many ways to flash the phone. Put the firmware in different regions. All new insertions such a problem. Apparently, something changed in the program part that is not compatible with the hardware features of my Neo. So I thought, can I determine what to fix.
Maybe, but he can try repair, i saw it before with rebooting after playing games, and repair fix that problem, or maybe he can downgrade to old firmware. But when nothink help. Huh ... i dont know =)
If you put the old firmware, everything works perfectly. The processor does not get hot, the battery is normal. Everything is fine. But you know, do not use the old version firmware.
This problem is only on the new firmware. The rest of the smartphone is perfect.
By the way, yes, when leaving the "heavy" gaming phone sometimes restarts. Also a way only on the new firmware.
Sometimes while watching a video with a resolution of 1280x720 does not restart the phone, and pops up a message "video unavailable". Maybe what files to replace the system with the old firmware?
Hello! Who can tell me how to compile libOmxVdec.so, libOmxVenc.so from source? I put these files on the ICS Alpha 368 firmware and reboot the phone stopped watching the video. But the video lags badly. And in HD video played only sound. Video recording too much lag.
Then I put libOmxVdec.so, libOmxVenc.so of the 145 firmware, but the phone was again to restart. I think that it is precisely in these files.
Figured I'd update from my ICS 4.0.3 fw to ICS 4.0.4. Recently did so but noticed when I try to watch videos (Youtube and other sources) I can only hear sound and a slight frame will come up every 30 seconds or so.
Also when using the Camera app to take pictures the screen is blank except for the app borders. Same with recording, I'd record a blank screen but when I finish and save the video, all I see is the screenshot of the video but when I try to play it, I can hear sound but no picture.
What is this madness! Please help, I've not only tried searching the site but also my trust sidekick... "The Google"...
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I rooted my phone after updating. I'm not sure if it was the root that caused the camera to break as well as video playback. I'm going to un-root and try again.
All the problems related to non 4.04 kernel.
Flash the ROM again and root using the other method.
Or
Flash the stock kernel back, it will be fixed
Hello!
After upgrading to ICS 4.0.4 the video from Youtube are playing not smooth. This happens only to HD videos, SD videos are okay. This happened after I upgraded to ICS 4.0.4 from 3.x. Before that everything was good. When I enable "Show CPU usage" in "Developer option", I see that skipping frames starts when mediaserver uses the cpu (I attached a screenshot). Tried to to "Factory reset" - did not help. When I did factory reset, tried to watch any HD video - same thing. I use the tabled only to read news and watch something from youtube. Some other application are installed (for Kids).
WIFI signal is strong, I see that video is buffering ahead of playing, not rooted.
Question is - what to do to fix this issue with ICS 4.0.4 or how do I roll back to 3.2 or even to the ROM that was in the box when I bought it.
You cant really fix it if you are not rooted. Samsung's fault.
The only way of fixing it is going back to HC and rooting and installing Custom ICS or JB roms did not help at all for me.
In HC, the Youtube plays smoothly in the app, but still lags in the web browser..in www.m.youtube.com
In ICS and JB, both options lag like hell.
I downloaded Pimp My ROM from google play, and set everything possible that is present to make the tab faster and perform better, and the youtube is a little bit better now, but still there are lags. It's definitely better though.
But still, Youtube in HC plays better.
As title, after around 2 hours after restart there always comes, this video cant be played. Any app, facebook, youtube, the sony video player, nothing works, just BS Player works in software mode.. but that doesn't solve the facebook or any other apps problem
EDIT: forgot the question tag, how can i change it?
Happens to me too since yesterday, very annoying, you can't even record videos...
Try to flash stock firmware
Sent from my Xperia Z2 somewhere in Norway
I am on stock firmware, flashed via flashtool/emma several times, nothing helps
Have you tried a different firmware? It may be a fault on the one you are flashing
Sent from my Xperia Z2 somewhere in Norway
Yes i tried, all lollipop frmwares have this
I'm having this problem too, can't mind how to fix it
I'm looking for a solution for a video playback problem my LG-H930DS (SEA) has after the 8.0 Oreo update. When I start the phone everything is working well, but after a few minutes of normal usage the built-in videoplayer cannot play video recordings made by the phone itself. It says "Cannot play video - This file type is not supported" Then I have to restart the phone to get it working again. But it fails nearly every day. I wouldn't mind this failing because I can choose a different app to play the gallery videos, but the problem is that Snap-chat videos fail to play as well when this happens, until next restart. That's the bug I cannot have. Also when the phone gets into the state of not playing videos, the ringtones and alarm clock make no sound.
To start the problem I only have to open a few random web pages in chrome, open the gallery a few times, play some videos , and in a few minutes of this usage video playback crashes. MX player, VLC and youtube still work though.
I have done a lot of troubleshooting for this problem:
Full restore of the phone
Flashed different firmwares, H930DS20b, H930DS20d, and the european variant H93020d
Tried with no apps installed, other then preinstalled ones
Tried it in safe mode
But the problem always remains.
I always use the same google account. And after upgrading to 8.0 the problem does not seem to start until I restart the phone for the first time, after that it's constantly failing. Don't know if it starts when the memory gets close to full or not, but nothing else is failing on the phone.
I have now downgraded my phone to the Android Nougat 7.1.2 (H930DS10d) and this problem is not there, no matter how hard I try to replicate it.
I can only find one link on google where this problem is reported. (problem #6)
I have contacted LG Support, and they had never heard about this, and wanted me to send my phone in for repairs. But I'm not willing to pay for shipping from Europe to Asia, if this is just a software problem.
Is someone else getting this problem, or does know a fix or a workaround for it? Or is there a way for me to view the errors the phone is running into?
Sorry for the long post, hope someone is willing to read it and give me a little help
I finally found out what the problem is. It's actually just media files in the storage I use every day. These files only contain audio, but have the extension .ts. Video playback on the phone fails because the gallery is trying to create thumbnails of them to display. The workaround for the problem was to place a .nomedia file in the folder containing those files, to hide them from the gallery. After that the problem stopped. I've been using these files for years, and it has never been a problem until Android 8.
have you tried some other video player?
stock one is quite basic and thin.
Hi, yes I do use another players, but the gallery is failing video plaback in snapchat and stopping ringtones and alarms from working aswell, without using the stock player.
Same problem here with LG V30
I have the same problem with my phone I have the T-Mobile V30 and I have the same issue. I figured out not to take videos in 4k [email protected] works fine. But the moment I create a video at 4k it either starts playing and stops midway with sound continuing to play with frozen picture or it just says it doesn't support the video.
I've been using LG phones ever since the G2 and never had any other phone or any problems with them. This one though is getting really annoying.
I hate these Q&A format threads with a passion. I wish people would just open regular threads...

Have you tried other video players like VLC, MXPlayer?
Yes sir I did many players and VLC is always on all my devices and it also gets stuck. I'll try the .nomedia file and see how that works
And I have a problem with the smoothness of video playback in gallery, whether it's a bluray movie in mp4/mkv FHD format, or from camera in FHD or in 4k is always on Android 8.0 I have a delicate jam, how would he lose single frames every 0.7sec ~ 0 , 25sec. I came back for testing on 7.1.2 and it is perfectly smooth always, as soon as I updated to 8.0 version 20d or the latest 21h there are jam ... how b was an oreo error, quite a few friends did not catch up with this problem, I'm a perfectionist and I look at every detail whether it's a video or sound, that's why I chose the highest model of the phone.
LG releases more patches (already 4) and as soon as it appears oreo are staples. You can see that this is a pfroblem with support for video caps because MX Player also has micro jams on the hardware codec.
Interestingly, youtube is fluid.
I only hope that the Android Pie will be improved.
I'm having the same problem as well please let me know when you will find the solution to this problem of smoothness of video
At first it was running smooth AF but after some time i noticed the problem after 1 day of use.
Reseting the phone didnt work.
