[H] Stock Samsung and counter - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I found out about the CM Install app that lets you flash CM with android 4.3.1 without rooting or custom recovery. So I want to try it out but first I want to know. When the phone is running CM how to I go back to stock and reset the counter ?
I checked http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2323847 and I read the stock firmware stuff and it's pretty clear but, that doesn't reset the counter. So if I flashed the stock firmware how to I reset the counter ? would that need root ? is there an easy way to go back to stock ?.
P.S: I'm new to Samsung rooting and flashing stuff so if I could ask you to post detailed step-by-step or a video tutorial ?

Its all in the stickied faqs and guides .

ok thats not too difficult to return back to stock with counter zero, what u need to do is reset the counter using triangle away, which needs root access, when the reset process is complete don't let the phone to boot up(remove the battery) and flash your stock firmware.. thats all u need to do. Further help? u can pm me..

I will be really thankfull for you responce, and please if i made some mistakes above i am sorry again i am new here
1-root with cf-root for you firmware using Odin.
2-boot into recovery and do a cwm backup or use the cwm app that installs with cf root to do the same.
3-if you want to go back to stock flash the original kernal using Odin and use a download mode jig to reset counter to hide flashing.
4-if you use a custom rom restore backup then do the above step.
You can find plenty of how-to's on any if the above points on this forum or by Googling it.

And or look for your stock/branded rom download in the development section .

Ok. To flash the original kernal you will need to get it from the intratech thread. He had them all I think. This will remove the custom kernal and, assuming you are still on stock firmware everything is stock again.
As for the jig, when you flash a non stock kernal, there is a counter which shows when you go into download mode. Samsung put this in to see if you had flashed anything if you return it for warranty. The jig plugs into the phones USB/charging port and clears it so Samsung knows ****. I bought one off eBay for $2 delivered.

Flashing stock firmware via Odin

Hello everyone,
For unrooting purposes If I flash a stock firmware 4.0.3 via Odin then will the flash counter increase by one? I have reset it to zero using triangle away app already and my device is rooted and on stock with that super brick bug. Also that I can flash any of the stock firmware like LPQ as long as it is developed for I9100 right? Or there any sort of regional restriction?
Thanks in advance!

ask moderator to move your Question to Q&A section bro, here is development section
You can always reset your binary counter with triangle away or USB jig.
If you are on stock firmware, you are good, because it is samusng's original.
4.0.3 keeps the brick bug away.
Firmwares are separeted by branded & unbranded, they all work on any I9100 devices. Modems, on the other hand, my not work in your country / region. You'll have to flash another one in order to get your network to work.
I am trying to find the answer to the OP.
My S2 has just been replaced after a long struggle with the supplier & Samsung so I have decided not to ever do any custom ROM flashing again.
The above replies didn't really answer the simple question: Does flashing an official ROM like the new 4.1.2 JB with Odin increase the custom rom counter on the phone.
I know this can be reset but it was trying to do that before that bricked my phone and why it had to go back for service. I don't want to do that again but if I know the custom ROM counter will not go up I'm happy to flash official JB with Odin.
My phone is CYV (Cyprus) so likely to be one of the last places to get JB via OTA or Kies.
Thanks

Custom couter stay at zero, but bootloader will by unlocked and "smart" guys in samsung service will know about flash.
@grisoxxl: I did not quite get you. You mean to say that the bootloader once unlocked remains unlocked even If you flash a stock firmware?
And one more thing. When do I need to backup that efs folder? Know about HC ktool?

confusing guides for rooting and upgrading

I have read and followed the guide of rooting , but still very confused . Initially, my phone was ICS 4.04 updated by OTA UCLK3 and non-root. I followed the guide and rooted it with UCKK6 , and it is now 2.3.6 , flash counter = NO
1) Now, if I update it back to UCLK3 from sammobile , will I lose root ? and any incrementing in flash counter? To obtain root with UCLK3 without losing the counter increment, what should I do ?
2) If I want to update to latest J.B 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 by download and flash the ROM , I will lose the counter for sure and no way to revert it back or is there a way to make no increment to counter ? Also, I read about the part user has to maintain the Gingerbread kernel for other ROMs , which is very confusing to me. Is there just a simplest way to update to Jelly Bean with root without/with losing counter increment?
Thanks,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181
This will get you 4.0.3 with root.

Hey man. There are stickies with helpful information here, as well as notes in every threads OP about flashing that particular rom and if there are any special instructions. It sounds like you're saying you want to root and stay stock is that right?

[Q] Samsung s3 i9300 stock rom but rooted

I hope somebody can help. I would like to know if anyone has a stock Android 4.1.2 XXEMG4 ROM for download? That is already rooted to flash.
I would like this to be able to go back to stock purely to have the choice and without having to re-root or losing modem efs and the imei.
Is it possible? Has Anyone done it? I am a bit new to the phone, but any insight appreciated.

Stock rom of your choice and root and recovery via PhilZ recovery is the simple answer.
Basics read first.

Critical you read the first two posts

JJEgan Please clarify
thank you all for quick responses. I would like more info on JJEgan reply if i may. It sounds too easy.
1. Basically i restore stock formware and load up
2. Install PhilZ Touch recovery the way its explained.
3. Install Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip via recovery
and its all safe and done and rooted with recovery.
Is that right? Then edf imei etc all safe?:victory:
also would this work http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1868004. stumbled on it by chance.
either way i have some options? The older Versions?

No idea what you want super su usual method would be from Play store .
EFS if you are rooted now then back it up now if not after step 2 above .
edf imei etc all safe>>>> safe not 100% nothing is 100%
The rom you link to is not stock as its added.
All apps fully Deodexed
Rooted with SuperSU
Fully Zipaligned
BusyBoxed
Insecure Kernel
init.d support
Updated Adfree Hosts
As said MG4 onwards changes EFS layout this means that you dont flash an earlier rom or modem .

Onwards not backwards is the rule regarding MG4 .
FE7 NO
MJ1 would be yes
brilliant
Ok. I think im going with your original answer. To preserve samsungs original firmware with extra root and recovery. Then play with slim bean rom but have the option to go back. Seems far safer.:good::victory:
many thanks for all your help on this.
