Jumping ship from iOS to come to Android but with all of the latest great Android phones out there, it's hard to choose which one to pick. I'm familiar with Android already so I know what to expect. The question is, which of the latest and greatest Android smartphones would make a good "first android phone" to really get a good feel of the Android OS.
Edit: Woops, forgot to mention my carrier. I can go with Sprint or T-Mobile.

Which carrier are you planning to use for service? As this will depend which phone you should look into. If you really want to get a good feeling for Android the Nexus 5 is an excellent choice (Not available on Verizon) with the fastest updates, pure AOSP Android and great development support if you want to get into customization. The Galaxy S4 is also a good choice (Available on all major US carriers) it runs Samsung's Touchwiz on top of regular Android, Touchwiz adds many of it's own features to stock Android. However it has slower updates then stock Android and not everyone likes Samsung's customizations. Let me know if you still have questions.

Yea, I have been looking into the Nexus 5 a lot. I actually already ordered it but with the 3 week backorder, I have time to cancel it and pick something else if I decide I like something better. Thanks for the advice.
I'm wondering, do you have a Nexus 5? Because I'm reading reviews about a "washed out" screen but I'm not sure what they meant by that exactly.
I'm thrilled with the LG G2. I spent the past couple of years on the Galaxy Nexus and I don't mind the additions to the UI that LG brings, including some great camera software and extra multi tasking options. The screen is arguably the best on the market, it comes with 32gb, tri band LTE capability, world phone functionality, a 13mp camera that is neck in neck with the iPhone in reviews, and it's only $99 with contract at Best Buy on all carriers. I believe you can get it online or in the store and get some kind of $50 gift certificate deal too.
Those that prefer pure Google Android can argue, but, like the Moto X, there really is no bloatware and LG adds functionality straight up Google doesn't have including better camera software. AND, in about a month it will have Kit Kat.
Totally worth a stop at Best Buy to play with it.

I don't personally have a Nexus 5 (I have a Verizon Galaxy S3), but in general reviews have been positive. What they mean by "washed out" is colors may not appear to be as sharp or vivid or blacks might not appear deep enough, keep in mind what appears "washed out" to someone may not be to another person as result this can be somewhat subjective.

2.3 is out for the Sprint version. It's ready but its t-mobiles decision when to release it. Gingerbread has been out for the international Optimus as well. For us t-mobile users we should just root and install mik's cm7 or any Rom u like. It was painless for me.

LG forum mods don't believe it will be released for the Optimus T .
T-Mobile has made no promises.
The Optimus S release was so f**ked up that they pulled it on Sept. 28th
It's a mess and it ain't gonna happen.

LG promised all phones will receive a minimum of 1 version upgrade. Whether you will believe that or not idk. I'm running happy with mik's CM7 and I would never go back to stock. You should give it a shot. Stock Rom will not match the performance of this.
EDIT: I headed over to the Optimus S section on another forum and it seems ok. Some quirks and bugs, but seems usable.

As of Sept 8th US T-Mobile had not yet contacted LG to begin the process. I've done a fair bit of digging on this. I hope I'm wrong but I didn't just pull this out of my arse. It's all over the LG and US Tmo forums.
With regards to the Optimus S they wouldn't have pulled it if there weren't some serious issues.
I'm running CM7 and happy with it but I don't recall seeing a disclaimer saying "update it yourself"
P.S. The 3GS released in June of 2009 and was just updated to iOS 5, now that's service

Updates for Android are slow and it's pretty obvious. Comparing android updates to Apple is not the right thing. Apple just has to look after a few devices. Iphone 3/GS/4/4S. While there are hundreds of android devices. Even though devices are split between manufacturers like Samsung/HTC/LG they still have 10-30 devices to look after and high end devices will always be their top priority. It's a bummer, but we will just have to deal with it until Google comes up with something and they have taken this into account. They have said publicly that they know this is a major problem with Android and they are looking for ways to fix this. Lucky almost all high end phones have great developer support so we don't have to wait for the manufacturer.

It's a wise decision to invest into a higher end phone. Don't expect to get the same treatment when you got a lower end device because sadly things don't work that way. Phones like the Optimus/Galaxy Ace/Mini/Gio are pretty much not even budget phones anymore. They are at the bottom of the bottom. The mid-range phones now are the low end phones now. Things are shifting and it would be a waste of time for them to get in the trouble of working on a phone that is obsolete.

I agree my point exactly. Where's the QC? Google cashed in by not holding it's partners responsible. They had the power to do it right, and CHOSE not to. This isn't an accident.

You're making me laugh.
Let me see, you're comparing Android on a $200 max phone with an iPhone? A low-end phone will never provide the real Android experience.
I was looking at my O1 and I said "I think I'll buy a better droid next time, this one is just offering me a small taste of what Android can do". So I did; I bought a better, dual-core, 4.3" phone. Trust me, daily use of Android on a premium phone can't be compared to daily use on a cheap one.
So don't compare your O1 to an iPhone. Try and compare a GS2, Arc S, Sensation, Droid Bionic, Nexus etc to an iPhone and then see if the iPhone's really worth it.

Hardware and Software are different.
What's so hard to understand about wanting a well defined Product LifeCycle?
Buy a $300 Windows Home Laptop and buy a $2000 Windows Professional despktop. The SOFTWARE Product Lifecycle is the same.
No wonder Google is dragging it's feet with regards to this fragmentation. It's customers have been brainwashed. I thought Android users were supposed to be the smart ones... do yourselves a favor and THINK.
P.S. a iPhone 4S is $99 with contract in the US.

They don't make money upgrading existing devices when they can just crank out new devices with minimal upgrades.

Yeah I'm surprised they even bothered agreeing to such an 'alliance' when carriers would have to sacrifice their bloatware and faster phone turnover. On the plus side it seems like HTC will be focusing more on quality over quantity. A few mouths back there was an article on them using better camera hardware, another article discussed better sound I believe, and last week I read how they are slimming down the number of devices so they can concentrate more on a smaller lineup.
That being said I would like to see a pure Google phone from HTC/Sprint. Sitting around waiting for them to release OS updates is a joke, not to mention the hoops devs jump through in order to bring us ROMS.

I'm a huge fan of HTC and Sense, I just don't see HTC making a "Google Phone" with Sense. It'll be another Nexus One.
Truth of the matter is Google can't force OEMs and Carriers to update older devices to whatever is the latest and greatest.
OEMs are not compensated for their add ins (TouchWiz, Sense, etc). If there was some direct compensation by Google they would feel obligated to bring out timely updates.
As some of you know, the OEMs do this to differentiate themselves from the android pack.
Also from a marketing standpoint, it hurts sales if their older models had the newest OS. There would be no incentive to upgrade your handset if it runs everything you already have.
Fragmentation is here to stay unless Google makes OEMs release two different updates for each phone. One with vanilla (working drivers etc) and one with the add-ins.

+1.
This is why I love teams like CM who create AOSP roms from source...
Android being so "open" is actually why everything is so fragmented. It won't change...it may even get worse as companies continue tap-dance around it and consumers get tired of asking why. Eventually we'll just accept it.
Sadly, if you want all the updates then you'll have to move away from android.

Very true. I'd rather be in this situation than be in the iTunes world, that's for sure.
I personally think that CyanogenMod should release their own line of phones.
Why wait and hope for someone to make exactly what we all really want? Just build it.
I do think I would honestly move ASAP to any carrier that allowed a such a phone on their network.
I can only imagine all the hurdles to get over to make it happen, but, wouldn't it be sweet??

I hope this never happens. Cyanogen would just become another OEM, and would need to make decisions about what phones to upgrade, when to upgrade those phones, and which ones to leave behind. Plus, Cyanogen also needs dev support from members of each type of phone they support. So, if a dev goes to a different phone, the support for that phone will either need to be transferred to another dev, or support may be dropped. Right now, the cyanogen team is on top of the world. I want them to stay there.
What I would like is for manufacturers like motorola and htc to treat their boot loaders more like Samsung, and LG. They don't need to be encrypted.
I am seriously considering getting the OG for my next phone. Only one thing worries me, and that is the development community. I have been burned before (HTC Vivid) by buying what looks like a great phone, only to get no support from the dev community. What are everyone's thoughts on this? Do you think the devs are going to come, or is the draw of the N4 too great?

Well, obviously the dev community is here to the extent that Team CodeFire has successfully unlocked the bootloader. There is also a modified stock ROM available (which I am happily using). We should also be expecting AOSP 4.2 pretty soon (heard rumors of possibly this Friday). While there aren't many ROM options at the moment, the dev community is definitely present and I believe it's only a matter of time before we start seeing more support.
I am seriously hoping that the N4 base is able to be easily ported over as mentioned. This would make this phone a Nexus 4 but with LTE and SD!!
Honestly though, I feel LG really has a nice UI on top compared to Sense and TouchWiz.
I am definitely watching with great interest. Would love to upgrade to the OG, even though my wife insists nothing is wrong with my Vivid. I have had it over a year. Isn't that reason enough to upgrade...

Take this with a grain of salt: as in I hold no liability for this point of view.
The Captivate had identical hardware to the Nexus S and it *STILL* has a strong dev community. There is more that goes into that than just devs but, the similar hardware helps loads.
The phone despite have a very low number of devs still has an unlocked bootloader and I feel safe in saying the devs who are here are fairly high quality.
Even if we never attract a large number of devs/users the reality is we are in a beautiful spot compared to a lot of other devices right now.
It's also important to keep in mind our numbers can still grow big time. The more users we get, the more interested devs we get, the more we all benefit.
And being honest.. if you go play with the phone in store.. you probably will walk out with it... It's really, really, nice. I mean the other phones in store didn't hold a candle to it at bestbuy or at&t.

I did want to NOT like this phone - mainly because it's an LG. But it's stupidly fast and smooth. If we see AOSP 4.2 or CM 10.1 on this beast it will be unstoppable! :cyclops:
I was hell bent on getting the Note 2 for weeks; the day I went to get one, I walked out with the OG and I have no regrets. LGs UI is a welcome change and will tide me over until the custom roms show up.
You totally should get the phone as is. Even with no further dev support. You have root, unlocked bootloader, and the stock rom debloated with tether functionality restored.
There is nothing you can't do with the stock rom. And when Jellybean comes out from LG, it will be debloated again. So even if you don't want the nexus rom or cyanogenmod (you'd be crazy not too), it's the best phone out right now. Even better than the Nexus 4.

I was seriously wanting the Note II as well because the huge screen but this UI I feels MUCH better then TouchWiz and hardware wise it is an absolute beast. Not to say the Note II isn't fast but nothing is touching this device right now. This phone is screaming fast just imagine when it gets 4.1 or 4.2!
I just couldn't go for the Nexus 4 since it seriously lacks storage space. 8 or 16GB with no SD??? C'MON! Hell, I just installed The Bard's Tale and selected the HD pack and it took up 3.5GB on it's own. Missing LTE even further drives the nail down.
Unfortunately, most people outside of hardware geeks don't know how amazing this beast of a phone is. Then half the one who are hardware gurus are scared because its an LG. I convinced the guy next to me at work to pick up the Sprint version. He absolutely loves it too.
I would use the upgrade that I have on Att.. but the Dev community is very important to have... Only time will tell.. watching with great interest.

I was microscopically close to pulling the trigger on the SG3 when I decided last minute to get the OG. Never regretted it for a second and I'm still bone stock.
Looking to get this as well It's down to the N4 or this. Really want LTE. Badly. But don't want to get screwed over for dev community, but I highly doubt that will happen. AOSP ROMs are on their way, undoubtedly.
from what i was told with small modifications n4 roms will run just fine on the lgog also. so that opens up way more possibilities if that is true
This is definitely one of the best devices currently since it runs buttery smooth even on ICS. 4.1/2 or CM will make this device unbelievable.
Talked my brother into getting one. He ordered his optimus g today and it was back ordered (The s3 disappeared from amazon for att days ago, probably why.) so im gonna go out on a limb and assume we will get some more people working in here in the near future.

Honestly though, I feel LG really has a nice UI on top compared to Sense and TouchWiz.

Agreed. It's almost like they just took AOSP & tweaked it juuuuuust a little bit. I actually like it.
Thanks for all of the great advice. I think you guys have me convinced. Friday is the day, if I can find it locally for $99.

At first glance I fell in love with this device. Its sleek, has an amazing screen, beautiful design and very fast. Also has a okay camera (prefer my s3 way more). So whats not to love? Well after 9 days and mixing it up between devices my G now has a dead pixel, shuts off and is sluggish. I have no idea why because the phone has never been dropped or exposed to any kid of water. So needless to say I called AT&T and because I am within my 14 day period they are exchanging it even for a New Titanium Galaxy Note 2. Really wish it worked out, loved the phone. So you can catch me me back in the sammy forums for now, still might get another OG.

In most cases the issues of one does not represent the issues of many. Nevertheless, enjoy your Note II.
Cool story bro. Thanks for letting us know. Have a nice day.
No matter how good of quality a device is known for... there is always a bad batch that comes off the assembly line.
This applies to cars, phones, electronics, any consumer product...
I think that in this case, you are one of the unlucky few who got on one from the crap stack.

Just looking at the OP's "devices" in his sig makes me think he isn't happy with many many many devices...
Why people feel compelled to post these kind of posts is beyond me. You know what? No one really cares that you traded your phone.
Good for you. Enjoy.

Anyone that has used an iphone is never satisfied, hence why the iphone 5 was lower than the s3 and OG on the consumer reports (LGOG was number 1 in case you were wondering)

I don't think you should.
He had a freak occurrence defective device.
So he exchanged it.
I think that is rash, but his choice.
Impacts us in no way.
It is a shame he didn't get to appreciate the true OG.

In now way am I bashing or downing the OG. I would have gladly accepted another G in return. As a matter of fact I miss having it, I thought it was a great phone. BUT when I called AT&T and they offered a new Titanium Note 2 as the replacement why would I decline it. Especially if it dsent cost me anything. Like saying " I'm sorry sir that your new Honda Accord is a lemon, would you like this new Corvette for the replacement". Who is going to say no. Not only that but I wanted the note 2, havent had one before. And for the smartass who said " look at all his devices" If you had know that a majority of the android phones were bought and donated to the developers of those devices and that I am sorry I can afford to get the new phones when they come out. Get off my nuts bro dont be jeleous.

Definitely not "jeleous" about your English vocabulary.
Have fun in the Samsung forums with your ohsoridiculous amount of money. Hope you find less things to complain about with the Note 2 instead of making pointless posts on their subforum as well.
So they replaced a $100 contract phone with a $300 contract phone? Also, not jealous about the devices you have and have had as well as on your nuts about it, as it was a simple statement, that was a nervous assumption on your own, because you're in a corner defending yourself. I'm having fun feeding you as well, due to you being an obvious troll since you've provided nothing informative by making this topic.
Ye best start believin' in troll threads... Yer in one.

I have the Note 2 and the OG and I have to say the Note 2 is not as nice as the OG.
Only plus side is that it will have much more development support.
LG Optimus G E971
I just sold it, that's it I got tired of waiting for the devs's this phone is top, but will never get support because of LG stupid way of handling advertisements.
They make the phone and its like they don't want to sell it. Stupid LG will never buy form them.

With the halt of production and carriers stopping to carry does this mean the resale value is up since you just wont be able to buy it anywhere? Will carriers still honor any recalls at any given time does this mean you can keep it for half a year and return it no questions asked since it is heading into a world wide recall ? A buyer basically has nothing to lose.. it is technically the best smartphone out and no screen display and camera is like it meaning people will always want it..
Problem is, why would anyone want to buy a ticking time bomb.
Our current device may work fine now but there's no telling when it will spontaneously combust.
It seems like Samsung is struggling to figure out what exactly is causing the Note 7 to blow up. And now they're lost for words.

the best Dispaly on any smart phone
Arguably the best camera
S-pen
Multitask
Design
People will want what they can't have especially with whats left in the market
My only concern is if they will continue to push OTA updates with the device

There is also a distinct possibility that if they scratch the device completely they could disable all the ones still in use remotely.
They already crippled some of the V1 ones with a 60% battery charge cap and a big annoying warning that pops up every 3 hours who knows what might happen next?
Resale will be complete crap on these devcies...they note 7 has already been marked by one recall...another one? Forget it.
There would be a niche market for die hard sammy fans who likely would pay a premium for a device that your not supposed to have but that would be a very tiny amount of people

Ive been totally anti apple but have even considered giving the 7 plus a go....cant believe i just said that lol

I'd never go Apple, purely because the lack of control over the system would really annoy me.
I'm returning my Note 7 tomorrow to grab a full refund. Will try Oneplus 3 for awhile.

What are your plans ? Im pretty set with a jailbroken iPhone 7 plus .. its as close as you can get to a note 7
an email i received straight from samsung stated that it's actually illegal to re-distribute this phone.. So... No, a huge strikeout.
They referenced to the Canada firearms act or something like that.
I will never go Apple either. Their iOS is far too restrictive. An Android is like carrying a laptop around with you. In fact, I haven't used a Windows laptop or PC for a long time now.
The annoying thing now is, even if I kept the Note 7, I don't expect Samsung to release anymore updates. Hell, if anything, they will cripple it again, with the whole 60% charge nonsense. And at this stage, Nougat is almost definitely out of the question.
Unless Samsung finds a way to integrate the Note 7 features with the S7 Edge, I'd reconsider.
Sent from my SM-N930F using Tapatalk
No one will be buying the phone even if you give them for free. Who will want a phone that might explode. I am waiting to see what Telus does right now. Hopefully they will allow us to change to any model. But my bet is they will only let you change to a S7 Edge or S7. If they allow then i might go for iPhone for now. Can't really decide what to get.

Lol personally wasn't feeling the phone when I played with it. Maybe the one iplayed with was bad but it had this annoying rocking motion that was driving me crazy. Press down the home button... The phone will rock. Store user said I just have to touch it... That didn't work. If all iPhone 7 are like that will never buy that phone... That rocking motion was driving me crazy

This is Mutiny....MUTINY!!!
Apple is probably giving a promotion and a bonus to the agent they had at Samsung that was in charge of this sabotage operation.
