[Q] i9100 samsung galaxy s2 root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
this is a simple question and i need a simple, direct answer.
how does one root this phone? i don't want a new rom, etc, at the moment, or a page with thousands and thousands of guides, links and other superfluous information. i dont have time. im not arrogant, i have a disability and all that information is just confusing to me, irrelevant and extra.
i tried the xerg--- whatever and it didn't work.
android 4.1.2 totally stock oem. we have two of them.
i would like to root, do a complete backup, then depending on how that goes, proceed from there with a newer, faster rom.

I guess you tried oneclickroot? Which variant of S2 do you have? We need to know everything about your phone because flashing the wrong file may cause brick.

All that information that you consider 'irrelevant' and 'extra' are those that will help you out of a mess should you happen to land in one.. and choosing to simply accept someone's advise over trying to understand what has to be done will ultimately land you in trouble mate, sooner or later... just my 2 cents!
As for rooting the I9100 on JB 4.1.2, without the need for flashing a custom rom, u need to flash a rooting package in recovery. There is a good guide here on XDA about it. Try searching for it. Good luck!

First reply, thank you. That was absolutely very helpful.
Second reply, not so helpful. I'm not dumb, I'm smart, yet retarded (slow). Deal with it! I've had to for over 30 years; one post ain't going to break nothing but an ego. So please go away... your attitude isn't helping. I've had to get used to trusting people.

Thanks.

If you want help/advice,then you will have more chance of success asking in a pleasant manner, rather than in a demanding, sanctimonious tone.
Don't start mouthing off just because you've been advised to spend 15 seconds searching.
Flash siyah with Odin
Flash philz with recovery
Get su/bbox apps, install then use cydia impactor
I could list lots more,but since I'm not on a wage here,I won't bother.
I too have a disability,its "cantstandmouthynoobsitis".

Wow, the ego's on here.

and neither am I.

Samsung Galaxy s2 or s2 4G

Hello, I'm starting get great interest in this whole flashing/rooting thing on the galaxy, but am not sure if the S2 or S2 4G as in can they both fully work in flashing an what not or does the S2 have more ability to do stuff to it?
Sorry I'm really new to all this and this forum, so I'm quite sure if this is posted in the right spot an what not, Thanks!
EDIT: I'm in Australia an they would be unlocked models, I thought I might put that in there not sure if changes things, Thanks!
Get a I9100 or I9100T rather than the 4G version;
1) At the moment there's only one 4G network in Australia, Telstra's, and 4G coverage isn't fantastic in a lot of places yet.
2) There's bugger all (zero ?) custom firmware available for this phone, so you'll be stuck with stock. As far as we know, firmware for the I9100/T won't work on this phone.
Locked or unlocked makes no difference to anything, apart from the ability to use the phone on any network, obviously.
Thank you so so much for the reply it really helped! I'll get i9100
Probably this weekend but I don't think I can cause of Easter!
Time to Learn how to actually root the phone now.
No worries
Best bit of advice I can give you is read until your eyes fall out. If you understand the process of whatever you're going to do to your phone inside out & follow instructions, it's a really hard phone to mess up/brick. The chances of bricking it increase exponentially depending on how little regard you pay to instructions.
Stickies & CFRoot thread are good places to start.
Good luck

Thank You So Much Again
I think I know how to root the phone now
Now I'm at the hard bit of picking the right rom/kernel thing
Once you've rooted the phone, trying roms/kernels is a snap because you can make/restore a backup of a previous setup in CWM in a few minutes. Makes life a lot easier
Important thing is you're doing the research before you get the phone, and that's a good thing
True true, I can't wait to try it all out
help needed
i don't think i can root my galaxy s2, can't seem to find my kernel version thing to root and install CWM info below
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband Version: i9100xxki4
Kernel Version: [email protected]#2
Yes you can. Go back to the CFRoot kernel and have another look. There's a matching kernel there you can use. Before you do tho, have a read of the bit in that thread that starts with "Help ! Which file do I use ?".
Read that bit very carefully.
Thanks, I still can't seem to find the right one, I'm either blind or stupid I'm leading towards both
Found It, i'll let you know if i brick
Got it successfully rooted thank you so much for all you help if you had a donate button I'd click it, just really thank you so much, I'd try custom rom but i need to get a memory card
You don't need an ext SD card. Just make a nandroid backup and save it to the internal SD
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
How do I make a nandroid backup? Sorry an thank you
Search, read, learn. And don't come back at me & say 'but I did search !".
If you did, you'd have already done a backup by now. All the info you need is in the links I gave you last week or whenever. You just have to look for it. Or do Google searches with XDA appended to your search terms.

reboot to recovery/CWM then choose backup & restore / choose backup (this will be saved on your phone memory) or choose backup to internal sdcard ( this will be saved on your memory card)...
I THOUGHT IT WAS THAT!
why do they have to use them damn fancy names like "nandroid"
ThankYou
Ps: I did search couldn't find "how to make a nandroid backup on galaxy s2"

[Q] Please help with restoring Stock Kernel & Firmware

Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster over in these parts, and am hoping that someone would be able to point me in the right direction to a solution to an issue I'm having....
I'm trying to get my S2 back to factory fresh condition (ie, stock ROM/Kernel etc.)
Now, the problem is, I've found all the necessary bits (ROM/Kernel) in the following thread......
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
However, I can't seem to download them. The multiupload links just take me to a download manager ad. :-/
I fully admit I may be missing something colossally stupid, so please, no name-calling
I did find the Kernel I need on another site, which I can't remember, but not the rom I need
Would someone please be able to tell me if I am indeed being a complete moron and missing something with the downloads?
Thanks

Why not just flash an official rom from www.sammobile.com via Odin..?
Sent from the Matrix
I did look at sammobile, but I can't seem to find a 'samsung' rom on there, just the carrier versions.
Also, don't I need to put a stock Kernel on there? As the one I've got isn't stock.
TheMightySpud
Yes you are one.
You say you want back to factory which is stock ROM and kernel.
Then you say you don't want to change kernel because the one you've got isn't stock.
"noob ok...lazy noob not ok"
Huh???
No, I do want to do both Rom and Kernel because neither is stock. Which is why I said there was no Kernel on the sammobile site, and asked the question about the Kernel.
So y'know, not lazy.
So, any answers to my actual question? How to actually download the files in the big thread? That's all I asked.

Multi upload went tits up 18 months ago courtesy of FBI.
There are plenty of unbranded stock packages on Sam mobile
If you want help then help yourself for starters by including the details about your phone etc.

There are unbranded Samsung roms on www.sammobile.com. Just flash with Odin. Your rom and kernel (the custom ones you have right now) will be replaced.

Can AT&T i777 Custom ROMs be Flashed on Tracfone Galaxy S II?

Hello members,
I am an Atrix user and was looking to upgrade to a Tracfone/Straight Talk branded Galaxy S II (carrier unlocked) that is barely used. Now i noticed that the phone is near-identical to the AT&T Galaxy SII i777 version both in terms of physical dimensions (including those four capacitive keys) and internal hardware. So can the custom ROMs for the i777 version be flashed on the Tracfone/Straight Talk Galaxy S II.
I searched around this forum for similar queries but didn't find any and hence had to create this thread for the same.
so you missed this glaring thread?

Actually, i stumbled across that thread a while after i created this one. Thanks though for posting the relevant link.
At the risk of sounding annoying, a glance at that thread tells me I can safely flash i777 ROMs on the Tracfone one, is that correct?

Can someone please throw light on this situation?
I'm really in a quandary as to whether it's worth spending on this variant of the Galaxy S2.

Yes. I have the s959g. Once you install the recovery with Odin you can flash any custom rooted rom or you can just root it and run stock ginger bread rooted. But why do that when you can have jelly bean?
The thread pirate ghost posted will tell you all you need to know
---------- Post added at 10:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 AM ----------
And inmho this tracfone variant is a little better than the at&t version because the recovery is in a sperate partition. Hard to screw it up. That is the only difference between the s959g and the sgh-i777

[Q] Siyah compatible with Stock 4.0.3 ?

2 days ago, I recovered from a Softbrick (instalation aborted when installing Omega v23), now I'm on Stock 4.0.3 XXKPA and I'm looking for a compatible Siyah Kernel. I've made some searches (so please don't say i'm lazy coz I'm not), but I haven't found clear answers, if someone could give a clear answer it would be great
Thanks in advance

I didn't, I'll ask now and see if someone answers
I imagine it will be one of the 3x versions (Had a look at all the Nandroid backups I have on my PC, I seemed to be using 3x versions with roms around that time). Tell you what, if you can at least find out what version you need (and make absolutely sure it's the right version, I'm only doing this once), I'll upload it here/attach it to a post.

Not sure. I stopped using it at 4x so I don't have any of the 5x kernels, you can get both 4x & 5x from Gokhan's DevHost space.

Yes. You'd think the worst that could happen would be bootloop, which you solve by flashing the right one. However, if it were me, I wouldn't flash anything until I knew for certain which version was which. Why the rush ?
Edit - Have been reading posts here which mention 3.3.2/3.3.3 & Android 4.0.3, which is what I thought in my first post in this thread. My recommendation in this post stands; don't flash anything until/unless you're 100% sure which version to use.

[Q] Need help rooting phone

Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100(T) Vodafone
PDA: I9100TDVLSM
PHONE: I9100TDVLS3
Android Version: 4.1.2
Kernel Version: 3.0.301-889696 [email protected]#3
Build Number: JZO54K.I9100TDVLSM
I'm having trouble working out what files I need to root my phone as there are so many variations, I don't plan on installing a custom rom I just want superuser access. There does not seem to be the correct kernel version for my phone in this post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1101671
The closest one I think would be GT-I9100T_DUKF2_insecure is that correct as I don't want to brick my phone if there is a chance using the wrong kernel as I don't have a spare one to use until I get it fixed. I have seen people suggest using I9100 instead and flash the modem but I don't want to do that or is this the only way?. I would have posted this in the kernel topic but I don't have the user permission to do so.
I will be using this guide http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/how-to-root-your-samsung-galaxy-s2-50004972/
Aside from the rom manager https://play.google.com/store/apps/...EwMiwiY29tLmtvdXNoaWtkdXR0YS5yb21tYW5hZ2VyIl0. Are there any other recommended apps that need to be installed after the rooting process
I'm only going to say two things :
1. Search for PhilZ kernel.
2. Don't install ROM manager. It's a safe bet to brick an i9100.
Sent from my GT-I9100: Powered by Dorimanx, running RootBox
I've got 2 more.
1) Stick to xda threads.
2) Search in the HUGE australian thread sticked in Q&A.
Sent from...this is not even my S2
I've got another one:-
If you can't work out how to root this phone without making a thread in Q&A given it was released two years ago, I'd question whether you should be messing with your phone in the first place. Read some threads (which people attempt to circumvent by posting threads like this; refer to my sig as to what happens to these people), settle on a method. It's not rocket surgery.
Edit - And another - If you're scared of bricking your phone, just don't go there. The moment you root your phone, kiss goodbye any expectation of warranty service.

I can work it out I just wanted some verification to determine if I was correct about what secure and insecure kernel I needed before I do this that will allow me to root the phone with out having to flash a modem onto it. I have settled on the method this one. This I why I posted under the Q&A section to get help on my understanding not be redirected to a different thread or told that I should not do this.
