I9300 - Noob in trouble - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I'm looking for some advice on how to save my phone, (I9300, T-Mobile, UK).
I will give a brief timeline of what I've done, and the symptoms my phone has, hopefully someone can help me fix the mess I've made.
What I did:
- Updated to Samsungs official 4.3 update which was terrible.
- Downloaded the new Cyanogenmod installer from the Play store, and installed 10.1.3 with no problems.
- After a few days a few major issues arose, I couldn't use bluetooth for audio, and I wasn't getting some social media notifications.
- Decided to go back to 'official' OS, the one before 4.3, I followed these instructions: -----can't insert link--- and downloaded the T-mobile UK 4.1.2 ROM from that site.
- This installed, but I never got a mobile signal, always 'emergency calls only'.
- Decide to re-install Cyanogenmod using the Play store app method, to try and go back to a working handset.
- Cyanogenmod installs, but no mobile signal persists.
Other symptoms:
- Small red exclamation mark in top left during boot screen.
- NO GOOGLE APPS have installed in Cyanogenmod, no Play store, no anything. Can't even add a Google account it seems.
- Phone does not show up on laptop when connected via USB. All drivers etc. are installed as far as I know. It just doesn't show up.
My phone is 'operational', it looks like Cyanogenmod 10.1, I can connect to WIFI, but I have nothing else it seems.
If there were ever an example of a noob messing up, this is surely it. Please, if anyone can help get my phone back to a working Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 or even stock ROM with mobile signal so I can text and call etc, it would be appreciated.

4.3 roms change the modem, and the efs format, so if you go back to 4.1 the modem cannot read your imei. Try flashing a 4.3 touchwiz based rom, like Android revolution, omega, s4 revolution rom. Just remember to flash a custom kernel too. Sorry for my bad english.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Could you explain further regarding flashing a custom kernel? Is there a specific kernel I should be looking for, and how do I do this?

I assume you have root a custom recovery like clockwork or teamwin. First flash your tw based rom. There are many kernels, like yank555, boeffla, adam, googy, it depends on you what you want: performance, batter, stability. When you choose what kernel, you only have to flash in recovery mode (install zip option). Every kernel's thread will give you more info about how each kernel performance.

Yes, Clockwork I believe.
I am currently downloading Android Revolution HD 40.0 from this site and putting it onto my phones SD card.
If I install this, will any further action be required regarding a custom kernel? the Android Revolution description describes it as having a stock kernel included?

OK, you are not reading much around but at least you are not posting questions in the wrong sections
1) you should read the thread on EFS formats (and IMEI numbers)
2) 4.3 certainly converted your EFS to v2 format and probably GMJ3 or so modem; also to one of the newer bootloaders (so you see the red exclamation mark when on CM, which basically means you are no longer on Samsung original stuff and you might be denied Samsung warranty)
3) when you went back to 4.1.2 you probably installed an older modem that does not understand the v2 EFS format, so the cellular part no longer worked
4) absolute first step - try to locate any form of EFS backups that you still have anywhere inside your the phone and place those in a safe place outside your phone; also make an EFS backup with your current configuration
5) after that multiple options are available - for instance you can install over your current CM a modem that knows about EFS v2 - for instance you can look around after EMG4 or GMJ3 modems, and if nothing more is damaged in the EFS that should restore your cellular stuff. It will not fix your lack of google apps - those are a separate package that you must install. Another option for you might be to install a minimal Omega v50.1 - that one I believe comes with EMG4 modem and should be a decent starting point, the power consumption is not the absolute best (I am on a different/older Omega combination that works better for me) but should be anyway a huge lot better than CM.
Good luck and focus on reading and learning more before jumping to flash stuff

It's highly recommended, stock kernel has lag issues. Made a quick search here for 4.3 touchwiz kernels, also, the last comments in AR HD surely talk about what kernels fits best the rom.

OK guys,
I would like to thank you very much for your help, I have installed Android Revolution and my cellular services have been restored, as well as all of the Google stuff.
Panic over, at least I have a working phone - I can figure out the finer details later (after doing plenty of reading xclub_101! :silly
Thank you again, if karma exists it'll buy you a beer on me.

Trouble U/G Android 2.4 to 4.0

SOLVED: Thanks to ares05 I already got the rom I wanted! I didn't find that specific rom in the first place... Anyway, anyone googles for this same matter can use my thread as an Q&A. The only thing I did to get Neatrom Lite working was putting it on Internal SD (Without wiping data). And flashing it (choose zip from internal SD) from the custom CWM recovery, then reboot. (Yes for beginners, CWM is an requirement!). For Nexus layout lovers try regular Cyanogenmod, Trebuchet or MIUI. They are all great.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
Question to myself: did I researched, googled and watch the video upon registration?
Yes, but that doesn't solve my specific problem or provide enough information to try the risky situation.
Problems:
I have trouble upgrading from Android 2.3.5 to 4.0 through Odin3 v1.85. It's very unclear what Rom I need to get to flash.
I flashed through Odin3 Android 4.0 before, through reading a lot and accepted the try and ended up getting boot loops. So I flashed back my android 2.3.5 XWKJ5. that gave me CWM but also voided the possibility to upgrade through Samsung Kies what I regretted later.
Then I thought, Okay... I'll get the basic Custom Rom: Cyanogenmod 9.1 then, through wiping cache/factory and dalvik cache and flashing through zip file on SD card everything went great. But I was unhappy with CM9 because the playstore app didn't work anymore and I didn't liked the overall layout of the camera, apps and some other minor bug I found - I forgot... So I went back to Android 2.3.5 with nandroid backup.
Also I have ROM manager but that doesn't let me update the specific CWM 6.0.1.0 rom as it says "An error occurred while downloading your recovery." Probably more people have this?!
What I need to know to solve this matter:
I want the default (stock) android 4.0+ ICS firmware on my phone with root. Can someone provide me the exact link of the .tar/.tar.md5 file needed to upgrade my phone to that android version or higher if the rom is available for it (4.1.3?). Since I find it hard to search the correct rom needed to get this result. The rom you might provide me can be slightly modded but that's okay, as long as I have all the ICS features and the layout it naturally comes with.
All the current Phone specific data you might found useful in helping me:
Samsung Galaxy S2 (I-9100)*
Android 2.3.5
Gingerbread.XWKJ5
CF-Root 5 Kernel (Root, CWM, Superuser).
+Has made an Nandroid backup through recovery.
+Backed up my apps through Titanium Backup.
*It's no AT&T or T-Mobile version, luckily.
TL;DR: I WANT TO UPGRADE ANDROID 2.3.5 TO 4.0+, WHAT SPECIFIC ROM I NEED TO FLASH?
I hope someone good willing enough is there to help me and I will check this thread often for any replies,
Scy.
There are a bunch of ROMS here which will give you the stock ICS look and feel. I haven't tried all of them but if that's the kinda ROM you want then you could check out the ROM that I'm currently using, Neatrom Lite. Follow the link on my signature to the ROM thread. The latest version for Neatrom is 4.0.4 and you could download it from the link given on the first Page of the thread.
If you wanna try something else you check out the following links :

This is a thread with an index of all the stock ICS ROMs

Take your pick.

Yeah, that's sort of what I want. The biggest reason of wanting to update is that my brother has stock ics 4.0 and his battery consumes like 50% less energy in locked mode(s), factor in the fact that his update cleaned a lot of the processes and unused apps. Also I am fond of the original stock look - especially the camera controls.
I will try neatrom (lite) later tonight I checked out the official forum Page, looks very very to my liking. I am so excited, thanks for showing will report later if it worked out.
- EDIT -
Yaaaay! Everything went flawlessly, it's cool that there is no Wipe needed as the forum thread indicates. I don't know if it works fluidly yet, but it seems everything is up and running like if it was original ICS. I think the Siyah kernel helps alot in battery usage which means alot to me because I travel alot. I will keep this rom for a long while if no bugs/freezes pop up! Seems so promising, thank you thank you thank you~~!!

[Q] Help trying to decide what root/rom combo.

Hi all,
A few newbie queries, if anyone will indulge me please?
I've just got an S3 international verison, having had various Nexus's and HTCs in the past, which I've rooted & used custom roms on. I got this s3, rooted it, then started looking for roms, but i'm a bit lost. It's tricky when you're new to a model of phone and have to re-learn the root nuances.
One of the apps I need is ARLibertator (for pionieer's appradio) which doesn't play nice with any ASOP roms, so I presume I'm going to be stuck with stock.
So far, I've rooted, but haven't updated from mb5>mg4. I've backed up the factory state with a clockwork mod backup and i've done a dump of the EFS using K tool.
Can I update from mb5 > mg4 without any issue using KIES, or do I need to be careful about the change it makes to the EFS?
Also, if i decide not to bother trying to use ARLiberator, am I good to try Cyanogen or similar now, or have I missed any steps or done the wrong thing?
There are stock based custom roms .
Kies will remove root .
Thanks - when you say 'remove' - perfectly safe to re-root the same way again after the update?
Also, what terminology would I need to search for for Roms based on stock - something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797334
Thanks for the help - really appreciate it.

Mostly Samsung based roms but not all of them

Yep as jje linked "android development" is mainly samsung based roms where as aosp are mainly in "original android development" as they're original, not reworks if existing work.
There are some aosp roms in "android development" as they are unofficial cm builds for example.
Samsung rom threads usually have the samsung build number in the thread title, eg XXEMG4

[HELP THREAD] Galaxy S3 Ask any question.

There are a lot of people joining xda on daily basis, and there are a lot of repetitive questions being asked which fill up Development threads. Point them here. Feel free to ask or answer questions. Idea of this thread is to get users to help other users with their problems/questions. Please do not spoon feed, but rather point in the direction where that user can find an answer and educate himself
I don't actually have the GS3 unfortunately, but in order to make XDA a better place, I thought I'd open up a help thread for those who need it. I won't be able to give S3 specific help, but I can help in terms of general questions. Hopefully some of the experienced S3 help out on this thread, because it'd make everything easier. Thanks!
First thing first. I strongly advise you to read THIS thread before posting ANYTHING on XDA.
Then, have a quick look at the names of threads in post no2, you might find what you need right away.
For ROM issues please do mention in your post about:
ROM name
ROM version and base
kernel version and its settings
any mods applied on top of it
flashing "style" aka dirty or clean
something like this
...and be sure you have asked before on the ROM thread unless you have less than 10 posts on XDA
Third. Even if you do get your question answered, please, do come back and read threads in post no2 (coming later as soon as we start getting the guides) to educate yourself. You'll be surprised how much time and frustration it will save you in the future.
ASK ANY QUESTION HERE,adb, drivers, superCID etc...... You will either get an answer or will get pointed in the right direction.
No abuse towards noobs tolerated here! No question is stupid in this thread.
***I feel that a little OT is healthy to the success of this type of thread. The people here who help the most will develop a comradery therefore OT is allowed within reason. Common sense will be applied ***
HALL OF FAME
People who contributed most to this thread and helped countless number of people with their problems/questions. In no particular order.
Currently none. Hopefully soon.
Big thanks to Undercover and Xanthrax for this thread model

Stuck
Hey guys, i'm sort of a noob on these forums so any help would be great!
I've had previous experience with rooting because of my S2, no problems at all. I got my s3 about a month ago and I've been trying to figure out how to root it. It's a GT-I9300T ( Australian model ). It has a lot of Vodafone bloatware, however it's unlocked as i'm using an Optus sim card. I've also read that there aren't many differences between the international model and the T model, so any international ROM should work fine. It's running 4.3. I've read about how KNOX is built into 4.3 and makes rooting difficult by blocking the installation of custom Roms and disabling superSu. I'm not sure if i have Knox though, because i don't have a KNOX app installed; there are no KNOX related apps installed on my phone ( according to the all section of my applications manager ) and it says nothing about the KNOX counter in download mode. Is KNOX still present on my phone, and will i be able to install customs roms?
Also, what would be the best method of rooting? I have tried the saferoot method by Mrw0lf on YouTube, which is made not to trigger Knox. I've read about CF root and other methods involving Odin, have not tried any yet because i'm scared of bricking my phone. Any help or link would be helpful. Also, if something goes wrong; would i be able to flash a stock 4.3 ROM onto my phone using Odin? I'm downloading it now from sammobile and i was wondering if flashing anything through Odin would cause problems.
Lastly, is there a way to backup my EFs before rooting? I can't find them through the default file explorer and the folder is empty in 3rd party ones. I can't seem to find them when i go through my phone on my computer, i just want a backup before i try to root.
Anyway, vital phone info:
Model: GT-I9300T
Version: 4.3
Sorry for the long post, but any help would be cool. Also, i'm not that good with all the technical things behind rooting such as CSCs, basebands and such, so any simple explanation would be nice
Thank you! :fingers-crossed:
Good morning
Dont worry about knox
There no knox for S3 now matter what variant
Now secondly.
U can flash everything from i9300 on your i9300t however its advisable that when u flash roms that u maintain or re-flash afterwards the appropriate modem
As the only difference between models is the band frequency
To root it ... For myself the easyest way is ...
Grab philz recovery
Flash it with Odin
Afterward boot into recovery
Go to advanced and choose re-root system
Then just boot the ROM go to market and download supersu you're good to go
About backup efs there's a loooooot of apps to do so u just need the pick the one who's flavour suit u best
Take care
If u have doubts just pm me

I just rooted my phone using Cf auto root. I forgot the warranty was expired so why not It ended up working, now running CyanogenMod 11 nightly About the modem, the reception seems the same. The signal i got before I rooted wasn't that great, haha. But i'll probably flash the modem anyway, just in case. I found a thread with most of the modems for the s3 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/ref-galaxy-s3-modem-radio-collection-t1740061
All the modems are for jellybean, however the ROM i'm on ( CyanogenMod 11 ) is on kitkat. Can i flash any of those modems? For the T model, they say there's no regional or carrier specific one, even though i checked my modem on sammobile and it's not listed in the thread. The latest one is for 4.1.2, i'm on 4.4.2. Should i flash it? Also, can you flash it in CWM, or does it have to be through Odin?
Edit: Seeing as you're a fellow S3 user, have you experienced any lag or freezing with your phone? It happened quite a lot pre root, but i just thought it was due to the bloatware. And Touchwiz, haha. But it's happening with CyanogenMod 11 as well. I know that it's a nightly and that bugs are to be expected however i have an S2 running CyanogenMod 11 as well, and there's nowhere near as much lag. Any ideas? I reset the phone and re installed the ROM twice, mainly because i forgot to flash Gapps XD Any ideas? Should i do a full factory reset, free up some space? I know that there's 2gb left on both the phone and my SD card.
Anyway, thanks for all of your help so far!

If u flashed cm u have retained same modem so no need to update modem
Just leave it be.
About lag no my phone runs just good no matter what aosp or recent stock rom
Check your kernel config or go for a custom one a and set him up to what suits u best.
I use agni kernel on cm alongside with a optimised profile
And even with a UV of CPU and GPU my phone runs real smooth and saves juice

I think you should probably full wipe before flashing another rom. Then you should be good to go to flash slimkat and gapps.

SD Issues ? backwards "u"
My Wife is on her 2nd SD card with the same issues. I copy all of her pics and some videos from her move them to the Sd card. When going into my files it says there is 500+gbs on it! The file path extsdcard/Android has 467 gbs and 471 folders. Then there is a data folder but the D in data is a backwards u then ata. This folder says it is 467gbs with all folders named with crazy looking characters. I did try and search forums but could not find where to post and didn't want to get yelled at by the "Geniuses" on here for posting in the wrong place or not searching well enough. So if u could please get me to the right place it would be much appreciated. All the files are pics and vids of kids and thankfully we have auto backup in with google otherwise it seems we would lose all photos and vids. Thanks. Please see attached pics for reference

i am using GlamourS4 5.0 rom and googy max2 kernel
the first problem i have is when i pressed the emergency call button on the lockscreen,
it did show anything such as the keyboard and the signal will stop a few seconds and come back.
second, i found the nfc not working anymore in my phone.
the nfc and s beam tag are greyed when i try to turn them on.
can anyone can solve my problems?
Anyone for my weird Network problem...?
I recently rooted my S3 via the CF Root method. Flashed CWM Recovery 6.0.4.4 via Odin.
That's it.
And now this weird problem-
My network is lost anytime! And the phone even doesn't say "Not registered on network" or something like that!
My phone was working properly and suddenly a friend of mine messaged me that he tried calling me but it said that my phone was switched off! I also noticed that at time even the data connection was not working. NO! It's not that it didn't show it isn't connected to the network or the data is disabled! The signal in the status bar was of 4 bars as it is and there was this symbol of 3G beside it. I tried calling my friend but the call got cancelled! I redialed, I didn't hear anything and then again the vibration saying the call was cancelled! I called up on my S3 through my landline number which also said that it was switched off -but not immediately. Whenever someone called me, they didn't hear anything for a long time of a minute or two and THEN it said that my mobile was switched off. I tried selecting my network operator manually, it said 'Registered on Network' but still I couldn't receive or make calls or use my internet data. But I could always send or receive SMSs!! It means it was connected to my network. The only solution was to reboot the phone after which it worked fine for a few hours. FOR FEW HOURS ONLY!
Now it happens at least 2-3 times per day and it has been important for me to check whether the data connection actually working and I'm able to access the internet or not because that's the only way to find whether someone can call me or not!
How do I fix this? I'm having my exams now and I don't have time to setup my phone again by changing ROMs!
Please tell me a way to fix this without changing my ROM!
I'm on Android 4.3 Stock ROM.

Could be to do with the EFS partition. 4.3 uses a different version and apparently problems can occur when trying to revert to an earlier version. As far as I have read elsewhere, the problem can be verified by checking the IMEI number in settings - if it is all zeros it has been corrupted and will cause what you describe. I'm afraid I don't have a solution but hopefully this info might help you move a bit closer to one.
Another SlimKat question. According to battery stats, it seems that my wi-fi is always on. I've used 3g only since last charge and wi-fi is off in settings. Can it be helped somehow? Screenshot attached.

I was using SlimKat (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/orig-development/rom-slimkat-i9100-t2552988) and no significant changes were made yesterday.
Inmediately I thought that I had no data available in my prepaid card. I checked with my provider (Lycamobile NL) and there were connections till 20:00 aprox, when I got home and hooked to the wifi. Nothing in the mornig. Data available in my account. I have tried the SIM in a different phone and works perfectly. I can make and receive phone calls, as send and receive SMS messages.
Thinking that it could be a problem with the rom I've installed PacMan (same result) and currently have installed last NeatROM. Same result.
I've also traveled to France, where I'm now: with a Lebara FR SIM that I've just toped-up I get the same annoying result: no data.
Data connections are enabled under Settings --> More... --> Mobile network settings, as it's also enabled the National data roaming. APNs are correctly configured and selected.
No software was installed neither settings changed neither in PacMan nor NeatROM.
A mistery.... any clue?
Clean install of stock to test in the first instance, then a clean install of the rom you were using. Could be the 'connectivity just goes away for no particular reason at all' thing I used to see on AOSP roms all the time when I ran them on my S2 (and was the reason I stopped using them).
You could also try flashing modems; starting with modems bundled with stock roms released by the carrier you're currently using.
It could still also quite easily be a carrier-side issue despite what you've said/checked. Everyone (on here) always thinks it's a phone-side issue when connectivity is poor/changes/non-existent, 80% of the time it's carrier-side.
Thanks four the advice MistahBungle. I'll try with stock.
On the other hand, the carrier issue is discarded:
- same SIM works in a different phone, in sake physical location.
- a different SIM, different carrier, different country, shoes the same behavior in the phone
Sends to me that that's a phone thing...

Yep more than likely something phone-side with that extra info you've provided. Try those suggestions & see how you go.
In my case it was waterlogged mainboard issue. I don't think that's the case with you but still, even after trying all the above you still face the same then the antenna module would be worth checking.
Praying for your s2's soul and your pockets
Restoring Stock firmware (I9100XWMS3_I9100FOPLS6_FOP) didn't help. ((
Now I'm completely lost... (((
Try flashing some modems for your area/device.

That's because you didn't read my post. I did suggest two other things, which Banjara helpfully/unnecessarily repeated.
If you want this issue resolved, it's going to take some effort on your part.
Just installed PacMan stable release (milestone 1).
Apart from the same behavior with the data connection, the browser does not launch.
Installing Resurection Remix right now. Let's see.
Just installed Resurrection Remix and same behavior.
Trying to find AOSP KK modems now, if possible from Netherlands network providers, ideally from KPN.
I have a question:
If I have flashed a AOSP rom (i.e. Resurrection Remix) which is KitKat, can I flash a stock modem wich is Jelly Bean?
I'm asking so because you adviced me to flash modems bundled in stock roms (which for I9100 stop at 4.1.2) on a AOSP rom (which is 4.4.2 kitkat)
Thank you for your support.

AFAIK,Modem is not dependent of the android version for u so u can flash the modem .
Yes u can downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.1.2 (but perform all the necessary wipes before doing the downgrade)
it worked!!!
Flashing modem.bin from the stock 4.1.2 on the Resurection Remix worked )))
Thanks MistahBungle and the others for the support!!!
Let's see now if it works also with NeatROM!!
Thanks again!!!
FYI, NeatROM worked as well!!!

[Q] I9300 most stable, smooth and trouble-free version of Cyanogen or similar?

Hello
My wife has taken over my I9300 but it is lagging and seems to get slower and slower even though I have wiped it with stock samsung software.
I want to try cyanogenmod or something similar but I I only have one shot at this I don't want to wipe it again and do all the sms and photo backup etc.
The question is which version is better? I don't need it to be based on the latest android. It is much more important that it is fast and smooth and stable.
What do you recommend? And which installation method? Can I install only the latest version when using the cyanogenmod autoinstaller?
Thank you for all your help.
Firstly, if you want stability, choose stock samsung, and about CM, it has its drawbacks (poorer battery life, low quality camera without hdr etc., yoir wife could freak out like my gf did ), my recomendation for you is to stay on samsung stock firmware, but download the latest version (XXUGNH4) and you can find it on sammobile (not aloved to post link), then when you flash that software via Odin (there are many tutorials on youtube) root it, and delete all the crappy samsung bloatware (allshare, samsung apps, svoice bla bla bla) because they slow down the device in a big way, afterwards install a custom launcher like for ex. Nova or Apex, and the phone will fly.
Oh, to mention, install a custom kernel like Boeffla (v 5.3-5.4beta), then, the phone will litteraly fly.
But, if you want CM, do it with autoinstaller, and download snapshot, not nightly.
Also, i don't want to recommend you best rom, because best rom threads are not allowed.
Cheers

It will happen nothing, you will maybe get apps for that country, for example vodafone apps bla bla that you can delete easily, rom will funtion good as any other.
stay on stock or update
Thanks for your answer. I thought cm was the way to go for stability...
So do you mean stock software (and remove bloatware) - and STAY on the old original software - or accept the software updates?

Stock without bloatware.
custom kernel
ok, thanks
What does a custom kernel like Boeffla do?
Sorry for all the questions
I find cyanogenmod's rom perfect and its stable. I'm currently using official cm11 for I9300. Another Rom you might consider: MIUI, but it no longer supports I9300 "officially". Your pick

Please read the thread, many many things, if you don't know what those things are, don't install it, it is for a bit more advanced users.
