Hi guys it's been a while since I've been on here. I have a quick question. I know the S4 bootloader can't be unlocked yet. Which is fine with me..but I found this thread to root it but it says not to do it if I accepted the OTA update. How do I know if I have the update? I did update my phone the other day but now it's asking for me to do it again. So I am think I don't have the latest update. I just want to root my phone to take out all this samsung and verizon crap it comes with. Hopefully when the bootloader is able to be unlocked I can start flashing custom roms. If anyone could help me out here that would be awesome. Here's the thread that I was going to follow.

There are separate OTA updates to get you from MDK to ME7, ME7 to MI1, and MI1 to MJ7. You'll get prompted for each of these as there's no way to skip an update.
To find out what you're running, Settings, More, About Phone. Look at the Build number field.

That depends on what you want to do. Updating to MI1 will still allow you root, but no custom recovery.
There's no big advantage there, but MI1 will allow you to update to MJ7 and keep root, which is perhaps worthwhile as that's 4.3.
I find my GS4 to be a lot faster on MJ7 so it was worth it. But only you can decide what's best.

You can root MJ7 using vroot. Since I don't trust that, I'm not rooted.

But the bootloader is still locked and I cant flash any custom roms yet right? And MJ7 is the newest update that is out???
Thanks
If you're on ME7 you can install safestrap to flash TW roms, but no AOSP. There's no point to upgrade to MI1 if that's what you want to do, because there's certain kernel issues using MI1 with safestrap. If you want to be on 4.3 rooted and don't care about flashing, then are safe methods to update firmware and keep root. Just follow the guides in their respective threads.

Whoops! I read that backwards and thought you wanted one with the update. Sorry about that!
What the heck is ME7 adn why do people want to avoid it like the plague.? How can I tell if my new S4 has this or not?
I searched ME7 here and all I got is specific posts about the people having the issue, and nothing about what it is.

ME7 is the new bootloader installed on Verizon's update a month or so ago. The previous version was MDK which could be flashed back to the pre-release MD2 for root access. The MDK and MD2 also allowed you to install a custom recovery partition like TWRP or CWM which allowed you to do full nandroid backups and reflash the phone with a new ROM. ME7 is locked and so far you cannot install TWRP or CWM effectively preventing anyone with it from flashing new ROMS. ME7 also cannot be flashed back using ODIN into the MDK or MD2 verisons. So right now, everyone with ME7 (me included) can only gain root access at the most.
I'm currently rooted on VRUAMDK with (what I believe to be anyway) the first method from when the phone was released. I didn't have much time to bother with it when ME7 came out so I just froze SDM in TiBu and ignored it until now.
Today I saw the info about the MI1 update and decided to give it a shot updating. I saw that it was already rooted so I figured I'd just go for it and do an OTA after unfreezing SDM. However, when I tried that the install restarted the phone into Team Win Recovery and didn't complete. I assume this was because TWR blocks the install to avoid you losing root or something like that.
What I'm wondering is if there's a way to update to MI1 through TWR or some other alternative to the Verizon OTA so I don't lose root at all? I would like to know if there's a similar method for rooted phones with ME7 (since my girlfriends phone is rooted on that.).
Thanks in advance.
Don't take the OTA. Just get an MI1 stock deodex ROM. For the love of God keep your bootloader intact. The newer ones are not exploitable.

Okay, I thought that might be the right course of action but wasn't sure that the ROMs were equivalent of an OTA or just a custom rebuild of the old version.
As for my Girlfriend whose phone came with ME7? Should she just take the OTA and then Root again?
The MI1 OTA, from what I've gathered, enables a custom software counter. So unless she's planning on staying fully stock I would avoid the update. MI1 didn't really change enough to justify anyone to update as far as I know.
By custom software counter, I mean that if you were to tinker with your phone too much, it would blow a permanent qfuse that would let Samsung know not to grant your warranty when the time comes.

Neither update offers anything of real value that the custom rom's aren't bringing to the table. Hell there are flashable radios even. Apps to SD for me7 might be the only useful feature. But there are custom me7 roms. Wait on the devs to update you.

No real value over the MDK release. It just locks things down.
Get one of the ROMs based on MI1.
Move along,,,, Nothing to see....

If I am still on MDK, can I use any rom (4.3/4.4) or only roms for 4.2.2 MDK?
Things were much simpler on my GNex

You can flash any rom you want. The only way you'll lock yourself down is if you take an official update.
Verification please

Hey folks...... :highfive: I'm currently working on my Ex Wifes phone SCH-I545. I've not updated or done anything to her phone since I rooted and installed Beanstown. Quite some time ago. Any way, Her Android version is 4.2.2/VRUAMDK. :good: TWRP for recovery, not sure the version. My question is, Can I just flash any of the latest ROMs to her phone? I just want to make sure I don't screw her phone up. @Crawshayi, I see your answer right there. I just want to double check and know that I won't lock her phone down.
I really appreciate you guys. Without you and XDA, I'd be completely lost.
Sincerely
David C
Edit: Thanks guys. Everything worked perfect. My phones are running flawless.
Showing off here. NOTE 2 left side this on my right.
Hey guys I have the sch-i545 on verizon running 4.2.2 with base ME7, I have been postponing the update, if I take it I know I will loose root but can I just root it again with safe root? And will I also be able to load safe strap? I know the bootloader is locked but I would like to try some of the custom roms for the me7 . I also saw a thread that said updating from me7 to MJ7 what would be the significance of that? Thanks guys..

Me7 was still 4.2 while mk2/mj7 are both 4.3. Yep you just reroot using saferoot it's very easy to use. I'm on mk2 rooted myself. Safestrap I's also compatible with it but you'll want to read into those threads some more
Nvidia Shield Root and More
Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way.

Hey decaturbob thanks for the reply I was actually all over those 2 threads, there was some great info in the one you had posted, I just wasn't understanding about the post to update from me7 to mj7 but as I read it again for the 3rd time I realized it was to get hyperdrive, It's just I'm new to this and I have been reading all these threads like crazy and have learned a lot these last few days. So my plan is to just take the 4.3 update, root again using safe root, install safe strap v3.65 I believe is the one I need for me7 but I'll double check, and then there was that thread on some of the custom roms that were usable with safe strap. Thanks again for the help guys
Hey folks I hate to make a new thread if there is already a post on this, but I couldn't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for.
I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 currently running 4.3 MJ7, rooted and using the wifi tether hack. I'm looking to upgrade to MK2, but I can't seem to find a guide that goes over how to do so without losing root and my wifi tether hack. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

What is the significant difference between MJ7 and MK2? I am on MJ7 and seem to have everything that I want (HyperDrive 15, tether, root).
What's the compelling reason to go up to MK2?

stepping stone to go to kitkat as you can retain mk2 bootloader while going to NC5 thru the upgrade/downgrade methods.
I just did this today and now running kitkat Bajarom V2.0
took a little while to do it but had no issues whatsoever

not difficult but you have to be careful thats why I recommend a checklist so you don;t forget what files to have on your phone, what files you need on your computer and the order of the steps to be done.
there are several youtube videos that discuss various steps that would need to be done. If you have rooted and installed roms before, if you have used odin before, the process can be done successfully
btw, baja is very nice and devs are updating theme packages and other things right now. Can't wait to do some flashing on it.
Oh, I have most of the files set on my computer and phone to make the jump. I think. I just need clarification. What does downgrading back to MK2 achieve? Was that necessary in your move to Baja? I see these things like HLOS modems and non-HLOS modem and I'm like wait what is that and do I need to be concerned by it?
I'm one of those guys who has some irrational fear of messing up, hence why I need a list of exact steps to do. I don't really like making assumptions if I could help it. :c

You don't have to bother with downgrade...Odin full wipe mk2 tar then follow surge's steps to upgrade to nc5...you can load baja over the rooted deox rom
sent by baja kitkat S4
Oooh. Okay. I'll look into this later tonight. Hopefully I'll get it done soon. By the way, I noticed in Surge's thread that there's an NC5 patch file in the deodexed feature list. What is that and when would I flash that part?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I find it harder and harder to find stuff around here anymore with people using the same keywords in their threads for ROMS and updates such as stock when it's actually a modified stock etc.
Anyway where is a stock root safe rom coming from ME7 to get to 4.3 or 4.4
I have SU set for root saver but anytime I try and go to the OTA I get a settings have stopped error.

Using an OTA, ME7 will update to MI1. That's rootable with Saferoot, so why worry about root saver?
MI1 will OTA to MJ7, which will OTA to MK2. Those are also rootable.
I'd recommend flashing a no-wipe MK2, which will get you to 4.3. That's available in this post.
You can't get to 4.4 yet since Verizon hasn't released it for our phones.
