Hey guys I have the sch-i545 on verizon running 4.2.2 with base ME7, I have been postponing the update, if I take it I know I will loose root but can I just root it again with safe root? And will I also be able to load safe strap? I know the bootloader is locked but I would like to try some of the custom roms for the me7 . I also saw a thread that said updating from me7 to MJ7 what would be the significance of that? Thanks guys..

Me7 was still 4.2 while mk2/mj7 are both 4.3. Yep you just reroot using saferoot it's very easy to use. I'm on mk2 rooted myself. Safestrap I's also compatible with it but you'll want to read into those threads some more
Nvidia Shield Root and More
Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way.

Hey decaturbob thanks for the reply I was actually all over those 2 threads, there was some great info in the one you had posted, I just wasn't understanding about the post to update from me7 to mj7 but as I read it again for the 3rd time I realized it was to get hyperdrive, It's just I'm new to this and I have been reading all these threads like crazy and have learned a lot these last few days. So my plan is to just take the 4.3 update, root again using safe root, install safe strap v3.65 I believe is the one I need for me7 but I'll double check, and then there was that thread on some of the custom roms that were usable with safe strap. Thanks again for the help guys

Once on me7 u cant odin back to mdk.

Whoops! I read that backwards and thought you wanted one with the update. Sorry about that!
What the heck is ME7 adn why do people want to avoid it like the plague.? How can I tell if my new S4 has this or not?
I searched ME7 here and all I got is specific posts about the people having the issue, and nothing about what it is.

If you don't know, you don't need to know

ME7 is the new bootloader installed on Verizon's update a month or so ago. The previous version was MDK which could be flashed back to the pre-release MD2 for root access. The MDK and MD2 also allowed you to install a custom recovery partition like TWRP or CWM which allowed you to do full nandroid backups and reflash the phone with a new ROM. ME7 is locked and so far you cannot install TWRP or CWM effectively preventing anyone with it from flashing new ROMS. ME7 also cannot be flashed back using ODIN into the MDK or MD2 verisons. So right now, everyone with ME7 (me included) can only gain root access at the most.
Hi guys it's been a while since I've been on here. I have a quick question. I know the S4 bootloader can't be unlocked yet. Which is fine with me..but I found this thread to root it but it says not to do it if I accepted the OTA update. How do I know if I have the update? I did update my phone the other day but now it's asking for me to do it again. So I am think I don't have the latest update. I just want to root my phone to take out all this samsung and verizon crap it comes with. Hopefully when the bootloader is able to be unlocked I can start flashing custom roms. If anyone could help me out here that would be awesome. Here's the thread that I was going to follow.

There are separate OTA updates to get you from MDK to ME7, ME7 to MI1, and MI1 to MJ7. You'll get prompted for each of these as there's no way to skip an update.
To find out what you're running, Settings, More, About Phone. Look at the Build number field.

That depends on what you want to do. Updating to MI1 will still allow you root, but no custom recovery.
There's no big advantage there, but MI1 will allow you to update to MJ7 and keep root, which is perhaps worthwhile as that's 4.3.
I find my GS4 to be a lot faster on MJ7 so it was worth it. But only you can decide what's best.

You can root MJ7 using vroot. Since I don't trust that, I'm not rooted.

But the bootloader is still locked and I cant flash any custom roms yet right? And MJ7 is the newest update that is out???
Thanks
If you're on ME7 you can install safestrap to flash TW roms, but no AOSP. There's no point to upgrade to MI1 if that's what you want to do, because there's certain kernel issues using MI1 with safestrap. If you want to be on 4.3 rooted and don't care about flashing, then are safe methods to update firmware and keep root. Just follow the guides in their respective threads.

My Samsung galaxy S4 i545 verizon was rooted on mj7. I Odin back to factory with the mj7 odin file.then took the mk2 O.T.A. update.. Then I downgraded back to mj7 using odin.. I've been searching forums all day on this few people already know about this, why isnt this big news? Is this a possibility to get a custom recovery on mj7 or mk2?

No, it's not big news. MK2 isn't a major update and doesn't change the kernel or the bootchain, so it's possible to downgrade to MJ7 from MK2. No, no possiblity of a custom recovery. Santa's not that generous, unfortunately.

Odin'd back to mj7 tried safestrap last night and got no splash screen. I'll just wait till its in alpha or in a more stable stage then give it another go. I Appreciate the suggestion and help :good:
I asked a similar question back in October, but fell out of the loop again and didn't want to necro an old post. I just want to verify that the information I got back then is still relavent.
Is installing custom ROMs still the best way to bring my MDK S4 up to the current version? If so, what should I be looking for in a ROM title to tell me that it's just a stock ROM that gives the same experience as the OTA? Someone mentioned Deodex'd in my last post, but I have no idea what that means or if it's what I should be looking for.
And for an S4 that came stock with ME7? Should my girlfriend (with an ME7 update) just take the newest OTA and root that, or is there a benefit to sticking with ME7 and installing a ROM? If the answer is to go with a ROM then she'll want the stock new OTA experience as well for now, are there any ME7 ROMs available that can do that?
Thanks again guys!
Don't touch your MDK S4. Leave it on MDK with Loki. It's practically an unlocked bootloader with actual TWRP and CWM. You can still install 4.3 TouchWiz stock ROMs on it because you can change the kernel. Plus you can run AOSP ROMs, which is awesome.

You're girls me7 s4 might as well update to mj7 or mk2 (4.3) as then she'll still be using Safestrap. Mostly everyone is running Hyperdrive anyways. Great performance and battery life with that. Update it, throw Safestrap 3.71 on there then Hyperdrive 12....pretty much bug free.
As far as you're MDK phone just grab whatever AOSP 4.3 or 4.4 ROM you like. You're lucky to have that phone!!

I have ME7 on my phone and decided to update to be compatible with hyperdrive.
I started the installation like 6 hours ago; is it supposed to take this long?
I had it rooted and got rid of all the bloatware from Verizon using titanium. Would that have something to do with it? Otherwise, I don't know what's going on. Thank you, and I apologize if this was addressed in any other thread.

No its not supposed to take that long. So you're trying to take the ota from me7 you're saying right? You may have to Odin if that doesn't work for you. Sometimes unfreezing and removing mods just doesn't do it

is there any benefit to keeping ME7 or just update to most recent update? thanks for the help.
Hi, new here, just moved to a VZW Galaxy S4. So, I made the mistake of allowing it to upgrade to NC5 when I unboxed (stupid, I know). What I'd like to know is, am I stuck with it? Can I do a factory reset, or will it still have the same baseband? Is there something I can do with Heimdall (not ODIN, I'm a Linux user) to completey wipe it and start over?
If I can, would it be better to downgrade, then install a different bootloader, and then flash the ROM I actually want? Or can I wipe and go straight to what I want?
I really detest TW, worse than MOTOblur! I was also really looking forward to getting away from SafeStrap (with all due respect to Hash). I'd really like something light and clean based on 4.4.2-4 like AOSP/GE, or maybe CM. Not just for looks but to save space, performance and battery.
I've looked around, and I see a lot of conflicting info. I can't find a clear concise answer. If I've missed something, I'm sorry, just direct me to it. Otherwise, please advise. Thanks!
Towel root will give you root... Safestrap will give you some rom choices. Take time and research and read.

Um, I am rooted and I do have SafeStrap. But my understanding is that I'm stuck with TW based ROMs and no AOSP with SS. I though Loki was my only option for such ROMs, which is a no go with NC5. Also, am I truly stuck with NC5, or not? Not to be rude, but it seems like you didn't read the entire post. Thanks for the reply, all the same.

A stickie thread in general forum would provide you most of info you are looking for. You are stuck with nc5 ...Either way you can run numerous roms via ss... As long as they are compatible with SS... Like I said research and read..

Like I said, read the post.It wasn't at all clear to me whether I can change bootloader, as most of what I found was over a year old. Wanted a stock recovery level solution. Anyway, never mind.
You can't downgrade the nc5 bootloader, there's no possible way to get working aosp or cm or a custom recovery like twrp or cwm onto an vzw s4 with an nc5 booyloader.
You can root using towelroot, you can use at&t's safestrap 3.72 to flash tw roms
