There are many differences between the two.
Use the code: *#0808#, Then change the USB Setting to "DM+Modem+ADB"
You can connect Note3 to the QPST.

You have to be fully rooted, and you have to use something like ES File Explorer that has a root explorer option you enable.

Is there an option in the USB settings that gets rid of that damnable VZW virtual CD that pops up everytime I plug the phone into the computer? (Or any ideas how to get rid of it? I've tried searching.)

Hey there,
I followed these instructions but I am not able to bring up the service menu.
I have a Note 3, with KK 4.4.2. I have tried to root it with towel root, both versions, and I suppose it didnt root it after all because when I place any of those codes in I get nothing.
I installed ES file explorer and I am not able to see the hidden menus. Even after enabling "show hidden files" and "root explorer".
Any ideas or ways that I can successfully root this device? It seems every time I find a file that says it can root it there is another messages saying it cant root N900V with KK 4.4.2.
Thanks for listening.

Where are you looking? Do you have a \efs directory (some file explorers show it as /efs)
In it, do you have a "carrier" directory?
And in that directory do you have a file named HiddenMenu?
And did you edit that file to change OFF to ON (it must be all caps)?
Then did reboot your phone after saving that file?

Using different file explorers I searched for each of the file names and had no success. I found no directories with those names at all. Hidden or otherwise. I used something called Towelroot but it didn't allow me access to root menus using the # sign or present any file names like you mention in this discussion here.
Not having good luck at all.

Those are not "hidden" directories. They are NOT on the sd card. The are from the root internal directory. It does not require root to find then, only to edit the one file.
You're doing something wrong.

H+ is because of the carrier. You plan may not permit LTE even if T-Mobile had it in your area.

I made a script which should help the LAC not showing up for people on LTE
This works when the Cell tower ID change checked by Tasker, each time the cell tower ID change, it will cache the new location from GPS to google location service. Should fix inaccurate location shown for Google Now every now and then.
The backup also includes a profile to enable sweep2wake when it is connected to my car bluetooth(disable it on disconnect), you can remove that if you want, but I find it useful.

Should be able to extract the folder, put it in root of the "sdcard" and in tasker to Restore the settings from it. Haven't been able to fully test the script as I just got home and thought of the idea, let me know how it turns out for you!
How it works is:
1. Store current Cell ID to a variable
2. Grab GPS location
3. On Cell ID not matching variable value stored last time, repeat 1 and 2
This approach is better than my first idea where it just cache location every 15 minutes, wastes battery a lot, but this approach should be more logically correct relative to how normal cell tower location is reported to android, but if you move about a lot, this might eat lots of battery too, not sure if it is a big battery hit yet.
Thank you!

Forgot to mention, the profile actually logs each time it caches a new location when cell tower ID changes. it is saved to a txt file for debugging purposes. When I fully finish testing, I will remove that in the script, for now, you can refer to that too to know each time it finds a new cell tower to grab new location from GPS.

I thought of it yes, but it doesnt work as intended. When disabling LTE, Android breaks the cell connection for a few moments, that will drop and call in progress or internet connection downloads etc.
This is the most elegant solution i have come up with only
This is quite a nice solution. It's not a solve all but definitely a move in the right direction. Can you explain what the processes in this script? I have tested this on a few apps and my GPS is now accurate on LTE. GMaps glitches but it does provide me with a GPS lock where there's usability.
Does anyone have the individual profiles. The op only has a backup of his tasker.

Here is an easy solution/fix for those who wish to use AdAway v2.8 but end up getting stuck on the final step to enabling ad blocking, "Applying hosts file".
If you are trying to enable AdAway but are stuck on "Applying hosts file" as seen in the screenshot below, then please follow these very simple instructions.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
1. Download a root explorer. I prefer using Root Explorer because I think its the best file explorer on the android market. If you have problems with purchasing apps you can always use the free version Explorer, or if you prefer using another file explorer that's fine, just make sure it has root access enabled.
2. Once you have a file explorer installed that has root access enabled, navigate to "system/etc" and find the file labeled "hosts" as seen in the screenshot below.
3. Hold down/select the file labeled "hosts" and select "permissions" from the selection as seen in the screenshot below.
4. After selecting permissions a window should have popped up where you can change the permissions of the file as seen in the screenshot below.
4. Change the permissions of the hosts file to "rw-rw-rw" just like in the screenshot below. Hit "OK" to apply the permission changes and close the file explorer completely and head back over to AdAway.
5. Once you have AdAway back open, click "Download files and apply ad blocking" and try again. Depending on your internet connection it shouldn't take very long, but you should see something like this, hit "Yes".
6. After your phone has rebooted, open AdAway again and you should see something like this saying newest hosts files enabled.
Congratulations, AdAway is now working and ad blocking is enabled!
Thanks man, it worked great
Cheers for the post, was getting this issue on ASOB 1.3.2 rom & it was starting to get annoying, sometimes it would apply the HOSTS file after a reboot, other times it wouldn't
Thanks, this works for me too !
Thanks...Seems Adaway randomly breaks this permission.
Worked perfect thanks
The reason AdAway does that on newer android versions (some 4.3 roms and most all 4.4) is because of SELinux. If you change it to permissive, the Hosts file applies perfectly. Do so at your own risk, but I can't stand having it on my phone. Blocks too many fun things.

It's not on TOP of the keyboard but directly above it. So when you're entering text input and trying to read what you wrote there's a blaring ad right below your text.

Ah ok. Well, at least you can opt out of them buy purchasing the premium version of it. I'd probably just do the AdAway option too, but the premium version does have the dark theme which would probably make it worth it to me. I much prefer white text on black backgrounds.
What also works for me is the same steps but just change to read-write and then apply adaway

Still having problems - you can try this
Had the same issue on my HTC Desire running 4.4.2 OmniRom by Spezi77
I followed all the steps outlined in the OP, but still Adaway was stuck while applying the host file
Finally, managed to get it to work by disabling the toast notification for Adaway in SuperSU.
The original solution has been posted here (towards the end)
On step 3: Using Explorer, I don't have a Permissions option when I select my hosts file. I also couldn't find an alternative File Manager with that option and I can't figure out why it isn't available for myself.
I know I'm probably missing something obvious here. Any ideas?
I installed root explorer -free version just to reprodcue your problem. Yes, I get the same on step 3 - it only shows the properties of the host file. I think this is partly because the program does not ask for root permissions. With SuperSu i couldn't manually grant root permissions to it.
I would suggest you to use "ES file explorer" instead. When you open this program, access the left menu. Open tools and scroll down to find root explorer option. Now in the app click on the button next to it to switch it on. The program will now ask for root permissions from your super user program. Grant there rights. Then you have to click on the word root explorer and you will get a popup menu. In this menu you have to next to the /system select RW option. This will allow you to make changes to system.
Now close this left menu, and navigate to the hosts file and set the permissions. When you long press on the file you will get similar options as listed in the original post.
You can switch off the root explorer option when you are done.

I think that @JJEgan meant- what tool did you use in order to root your device (CF-autoRoot, etc)
Anyway- is there a running app which uses root permissions other than Llama? If true- try to clean superSU log, reboot and see if Llama gets recognized by SuperSU.
if false- try to check other root apps, and if the issue stays the same- try to reflash root using newest CF-autoRoot (otherwise- reinstall Llama)

Thanks, Tallman
There's nothing that specifically refers to extending recognition times, but there are a couple that might apply: Re-authentication, enable during boot, Trust system user, etc--I'll give 'em a try.

I ran Llama fine on 4.2.2 stock for a year or so. When I switched to 4.4.2 WanamLite (stock less Knox) I started getting the message. I got SuperSU pro to enable logging.
My morning action turns airplane mode off, turns sync on, turns wifi on, then runs a bunch of things like facebook, email, etc to sync. I get the exclamation mark and the message at the top of the thread when this runs, or when the similar evening action runs. I'm getting the following log entries when it goes out of airplane mode (in approx these colors). Nothing in supersu says anything about delays.

Ok, I have a solution or workaround, but not a full explanation.
It seems permissions and such have changed between 4.2.2 and 4.4.2 and Llama isn't compatible, or maybe it's just not possible. The trick is to use the secure settings app, and enable the System+ Module inside it. I think I also made Secure Settings a device admin, just in case, but unsure if that's required. Then go to the compatible apps tab and click llama help for instructions.
Basically, in Llama, instead of using the built in airplane mode commands you add an action "locale plugin", then choose "secure settings", "root actions", then "airplane mode". That lets you turn it on, off, or toggle.
If you purchase secure settings pro (about $1.50, in-app purchase via google play) you get access to a shutdown and reboot command. I can't find any other way to do this - even via a shell where you can usually do it the shutdown/reboot commands don't seem to be there.
Sorted!
Same problem here with a Moto X with root and it shows up as having root access in SuperSu.

Hello
I just about got through the rooting of my phone. But now I unable to edit files as i want to. Mostly replacing boot animations and lock sounds and the like. I was advised that my "partition" will be set to read only and needs to be set to RW. Ive searched the forums but cannot find a "noobs" guide to doing this.
Ive tried file browsers that say they switch the mode to RW when copying and pasting files, but i guess they cant change the mode unless its been set to RW in the first place?
Can anyone help me find a guide or help me through?
Thank you for all your support!
I use an app called "root explorer"
If you look at the screenshot below...
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
you will see a button right at the top of the image that says "mount RW"
Selecting this option allows copying and pasting of files to protected storage.....simples
Edit.....the built in file manager (that comes with CM) will also allow this.....

Purchased and "copy failed" when i tried to copy a "bootanimation.zip" to "system/media
also failed when i tried to copy an .ogg to System/media/audio/ui
I set the app to RW mode.
Ive already treid this with both SuperUser and RootBrowser
What can i be doing wrong?
Have you tried the CM file manager?
Open the app, press settings and scroll to advanced to enable root access and allow the su request.
Then go to the directory you want to modify. Look at the screenshot...
you will see a lock symbol at the top....touch the symbol to toggle RO and RW.....

yes thats on unlocked mode to RW. In fact i find it very difficult to use. Cant seem to copy file to new directories with it. WHen i select a file there doesnt seem to be a "copy" option only a make a copy which duplicates it in the same folder. When i try to "move selection" it tells me Destination folder cannot be sub folder of source or be same as source." i see no option for copy or paste?
ho hum getting a bit fed up with it all...
Oh....I see.....
You select the file you want to copy by "checking" the box to the left of the file, then navigate to the folder where you want to copy it to, then, using the "two columns of 4 dots" button, select "copy selection here".......

Thank you for all you help but despite the padlock being "open" all i get is "operation failed." The file permissions match of my new ".ogg" , the file name matches and the file is in the system folder waiting to be moved to the correct folder system/media/audio/ui to Unlock.ogg. I know the ogg is good as it plays on my phone ok.
I can edit the original Unlock.ogg to rename it ok, to Unlock_old.ogg no problem???
I have to say i was really optimistic about being able to play with my phone since rooted. Now i feel powerless
At least i now how to use the CM file manager properly even if it doeskin work for me.
Is there anything else it could be?
1) Chill out. You're giving up too easily on something ridiculously minor. If you don't have the patience for having to fiddle around with something like this, prepare to be constantly annoyed/impatient. If you mod your phone, stuff like this happening is standard (leave it stock if you want a completely trouble free experience).
2) Try fix permissions in recovery (no, I am not spoonfeeding you how to do this, you should already know, if not, search).

@MistahBungle I don't think he's going to be able to do that......fix permissions has been removed from CWM if I remember right.....

yes i am unable to find fix permissions in CM Recovery 6.0.4.7
I have three apps for Root browsing and files managing. All fail even though they say they are in RW mode. I guess this "permissions" is the wau to go. I am not asking to be spoon fed folks just pointed in the right direction...:good:
You might need to check that your apps have root access in developer options within settings.......
I'm assuming you *have* got developer options enabled.....
Sent from my Markox powered KitKatted S2
Ok ive checked. RootBrowser has full superuser access, not sure if this is same as developer access. It says it has the read/write ability and this can be potentially dangerous indicated by "#" in the about app system info. Assume that's full user access.I can rename files in the system folder and i can allegedly delete them. I am unable to paste new ones into the folder however. I can change permissions of files, without full access would I not be able to do these things?
It would *appear* that you have full root access, but it's best to cover all the possibilities......
So, enable developer options, then if that doesn't work, go to recovery and try wiping cache and dalvic.....
If none of the above helps, then I really don't know what else to suggest..... Other than re flashing the ROM.........
Sent from my Markox powered KitKatted S2
Sorry developer options are enabled and USB debugging right fro the word go. i.e straight after flashing ROM. I wiped the cache and delvic before flashing the ROM.
Guess its a full back up and start again sigh.
Thanks for all your help guess my case is just one of those that gets fixed by "switch it off and on again" if you know what I mean
Of course for a noob complete backup and restore if just as daunting as the first time!

Hi,
apparently files can only be moved/copied onto the SD card by using the preinstalled file commander app. Should be easy, but I couldn't figure out yet, how to do it. If I long-click a file I can select it and click what I assume is the icon for copy in the top bar (see screenshot), but I don't know how to paste that file into another folder...

You can't copy files to SDCard (external) because write permissions has been revoked since the KK update, you need to be rooted and use sdfix app.
The icon you're looking for is the one that looks like a sheet of paper with a pencil on it. Click on that, then in the drop-down click "Paste".
Done it many many times already, shouldn't be a problem at all.
Oh, thanks! Didn't associate that icon with the task...

Yes you can. That is why File Commander comes pre-installed. It has the needed write permissions, without needing to root.

No it's not, there is nothing to do with file commander because the permission is in plateform.xml and that allow or not, but you can't only allow an app, also the root access is not enough you need to fix the permission, even rooted if you haven't the proper write permission you won't to anything.

Ok. Didn't know that. Mine was already rooted at the time and I just checked that File Manager was able to it, whatever I wanted, without having granted it root access in super user. Don't recall tampering with the platform.xml, but perhaps it was part of the rooting process or I flashed a zip which did it afterwards.

But this article seems to support my understanding:
"Any app that doesn't come pre-installed on your phone, either by Google, Samsung, or your carrier, will lack write privileges to the external SD card. "

Yes, it does. You dont have to be rooted to use file commander to write on external SD card

There is something wrong with that, for having write permission access without changing the plateform.xml that means files commander would have system write permission and it's not the case because it's a 3rd app and Google intentionally revoked the write permission access to 3rd app on the SDCard.
So you said that File Commander has system permission? Never seen something like that even on the file commander website

It is installed by Sony and should be considered a first party app.:

Is it somehow possible to install say ES explorer as a system app and the have full SD rights?

No, not without unlocked bootloader/root. But then you can let all user app access the sd-card.
I can confirm on a NON-root device that File Commander does allow you to write to the external SD card with copy/paste(paste option is under the 'edit/page with pencil' icon).

Easy fix guys: Install NextApp SDfix.apk. It fixes the sd card privileges to allow all read write permissions for sdcard.

This "NextApp SDfix" requires ROOT, the mentioned app does not need anything to work.

Root your device and install Root browser from google play it will download binarys @first time and will fix your problem.
