Just ran into a problem with enterring stock recovery and it asking for a password. I was trying to do a factory reset, and was not able to boot the phone.
Was trying to go back to stock and reroot to try and solve a problem, and ran into this error. Solution was to get into download mode again, rerun the "return to stock" software, and then reroot and install a custom kernel, and then do a factory reset.
I'm not exactly sure what caused the issue, and I think if I ever decide to do this again, I will factory reset first, then flash the "return to stock" software.
It was very odd, and I'm glad I was able to get around it and get my phone working again.
Um, ok... so whats the point of this?
I think, but I'm not sure, the point may be that I need to add an extra item to my return-to-stock documentation - if you're running device encryption, you need to wipe BEFORE returning to stock.
I think it's silly that stock recovery won't let you wipe without a password though, since usually wiping is the desired end result of a security error.

I had a pattern code set. There would be no way to enter that into a keyboard, so I'm not sure what password the software would want me to enter. A quick search on here showed someone kept re-entering the wrong password and it would eventually wipe the phone anyway.
I guess any type of password should be turned off before attempting to return to stock.

Umm, Ok...This is the general section, where all topics regarding the phone that aren't related to development, apps, or themes go. Shouldn't this be the proper place to discuss this?

I didnt know anything needed to be discussed after reading your OP. You had an issue and you got around your issue. If it is something that needs to be documented in the return-to-stock package, it could have been brought up in that thread.
Hi Gurus,
As I am not allowed to post in the original thread, thus I am asking my question here.
this is the actual thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742493&page=8
I am using stock Samsung ICS firmware (DXLP9) beforehand, rooted using CF root. Yesterday I tried this rom and encountered some issues.
1) After flashing this ROM, i didn't do a wipe (i guess there is no need to as per the title)
2) I notice only applications installed on phone memory will appears on the desktop, I mean on the "Downloaded App" tab itself. Apps installed on SD card will not be shown. Why is this so? Did I miss out something?
3) the Music app will FC when selecting the "End" options to close this program
I have reverted back to my original settings.
Could someone help me? thanks
Even a noob who flashed multiple times would know, it is crying for a wipe.
Haha yes do a factory reset and try again.

i am really a noob cos I flashed only once. you know, it can be very confusing and 'life threatening' for noob like me as some ROM requires flashing of kernel while some don't need, I have been reading till i give up. then there is this bootloader thing. Frankly speaking i also don't know what's the version of bootloader my set is using.
So for all ROMs I installed, I will do a wipe (factory reset, wipe davik cache etc). Is that correct?
thanks
YES
Hi everyone I need some help and I'll appreciate if you could spend some time and respond to my questions,I just bought a new i717 Noter from At&t and I followed to the ROOT instructions here and installed the custom ROM "Seraphim - Mesosphere - REMIX!" by Collective .
I am having following issues, I didn't have the GAPPS after I installed the ROM but I just installed the GAPPS and I downloaded some games and apps and I am getting a lot of crashes. For EX. the app Draw something was working fine when first installed but after few times using it now when I am touching to open it loads and says "Unfortunately, Draw some has stopped" , Gogle navigation crashes when I am touching "speak to destination" again app stops working. and more apps like viber...
Please give me your thoughts what I did wrong and what did I miss? can Anyone please recommend me a stable ROM to install on my i717 Note?
Thank you
Just do a factory reset and start fresh. Install gapps, then test them out. Then install your most favorite game, and test it out, etc.
To effectively troubleshoot, you have to start from a known good state, and work until you get the error.
Thank you for your reply rangercaptain.

Ranger got it ..
You have the classic signs of data corruption , from items being restored to the device from a previous rom.
As ranger said ....a fresh start should correct the issues.
And one additional item you should try...
When you get done flashing the new build and the gapps....do a "wipe data, factory reset" from within your recovery prior too your first boot cycle.
This will ensure that no old data is present upon first boot, and no older data will be written to the system or dalvik cache on boot.
Additionally , do "NOT" restore any previous apps that contain data...just download the apps fresh from the play store.....IMHO .g
Edit : we are here if you need further help, and again, welcome to XDA ....g
Thank you Greg! thanks a lot for your help guys!
Just want to make sure before doing anything , Greg you said I should do "wipe data, factory rest" , just have a question do I do that booting to recovery?. I have done something stupid I did not back up my original ROM before I installed this custom ROM, Please recommend me a good stable ROM to install .
Thanks

Factory reset is done from recovery. It wipes all installed apps and any data you accumulated. When that's completed, flash your rom.
Let it boot and settle in for several minutes, then sign into your google account.
Then go back and install gapps, then your apps from the market, and test each one.
Thanks a lot Ranger ! I will do as you said and post the results. Just a question before I do anything , you said "Let it boot and settle in for several minutes, then sign into your google account. " How do I sign in to my google account before installing GAPPS?
Thanks

Hey guys, Been having issues with my camera and custom roms, I tried to install Cyanogenmod a while back and it had issues then but I just uninstalled it thinking it was the rom, But now that I have tried to flash roms 3 different times with the same issue I am stumped on what this is, The camera refuses to register on the device, the camera app itself just straight up crashes, no other app can detect the camera either, Anyone know any way to fix this? Ive tried taking the battery out for 5 minutes then rebooting, Clearing the data and cache etc etc. I have no idea what to do. I really appreciate any help possible.
Oh forgot to say I tried safemode too.
Any help would be really appreciated thanks!
Could be the Gapps you are using. Some remove the stock camera and replace it with the Google camera and it doesn't work right. Please list which variant of the S5 you are using, which RR update and which Gapps for further assistance.

ResurrectionRemix-M-v5.7.1-20160712-kltedv Am on the S5 900I, Could it be the Gapps? I tried out other applications like facebook and another camera app which its not detecting the camera at all on that either, and I am using "BaNkS-Dynamic-GApps-6.x.x-10-20-15"
It's either that or the kernel. Now that I am thinking about it, it is probably kernel related since you have a Korean variant and it's a bit different than the US and EU ones. You can try the Open Gapps version to check though. If not that, you might have to see if there is a custom kernel for CM13 based roms that support the L variant or try another rom. Also, make sure you are on the correct bootloader and modem for whatever rom you are trying for best results. The developer should mention if you need something specific.

Im on the Australia phone by the way, And how do I find the Kernal specifics I was looking and couldnt find it on the site, I couldnt find any specifics.
Ohhh...I thought it said 900L. That makes a HUGE difference. lol Anyway, if the Gapps don't help, wipe cache and dalvik cache and flash this https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3z7nwwq7.../boeffla-kernel-3.0 stable_RR-kltexx.zip?dl=0
Recommend making a backup of boot first, just in case.

No worries. I've done this so many times I can do it in my sleep. lol You would want to wipe system, dalvik cache, and cache and reflash the rom and new Gapps. I'd almost bet it's the kernel though because I think they typically make the roms for the 900F and just change some stuff to get them to boot on other variants. Either way, you won't need to wipe data, so won't hurt to try. Will just take some time as it goes through and optimizes the apps each time you wipe the caches.

Hmm. Well, I'd try the Gapps then. Open Gapps > ARM > 6.0 > Pico
Wipe system, cache, dalvik. Flash rom then Gapps. Then test. If not still, then I would wipe caches again and try the kernel one more time. If still not working then that rom just isn't gonna work for you.

Still not working :/ Its weird the rom is specifically ment for the 900I I believe when I got it so I dont know whats wrong with it, Same thing happened with Cyanogenmod 13 too. I found someone having the exact same problem that I am having on here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2521961 At the bottom someone mentions what the exact cause is but not a fix
I was thinking updating the stock firmware might help but didn't help that other guy.
The only way to figure it out at this point would be to do a logcat and post it on put it on pastebin and provide a link on the RR thread so someone cam help troubleshoot the error.

Just tried a downgrade from the Android O Developer Preview (2), to 7.1.2 official Google images. Everything seemed to be going swimmingly, so I immediately rooted, and flashed Resurrection Remix 7.1.2.
What I did not count on was auto-rotation not working, and receiving no read on my proximity sensors at all. Thinking this was a ROM issue, I posted to the official ROM thread. Luckily, two users immediately responded telling me this was a known issue after downgrading from O, so I want to post it here in case anyone searches for it, hopefully the solution is easier to find.
Solution: Flash Official Google stock image of 7.1.2, check to see if rotation is working (it probably won't if yours wasn't previously). So now perform a Factory Reset (Settings->Backup & Reset->Factory Reset), some people have apparently needed to reset twice for the effect, but then your rotation/proximity should be fixed! Now you can return to doing whatever you wish with your 6P! Hopefully this will help anyone in need
Solution 2: After downgrading to the 7.x stock image, lock your bootloader. (Be sure to backup your internal!) Once you've locked it, boot up the device and unlock the bootloader again.
Solution 2.1: After you've locked the bootloader using Solution 2, boot up the device and perform a factory reset. Once that is done, boot up the device again before unlocking the bootloader again. Then continue on your Android journey!
Huge thanks to everyone sharing solutions and information on this thread!
I Had same issue and I was forced to go back to DP2, but now I'll try. Thanks for sharing solution

If you use WugFresh's root tool, flashing the stock images + unroot will wipe sdcard, however there is a "No wipe mode", but I've never tried it so I couldn't say what it involves/how it works.
The factory data reset(s) will not wipe sdcard, though you probably know that already, just including it in case you don't
Any other questions I'd be happy to answer the best I can

Not sure what a Fabric Reset would do, but factory data reset just wipes Data, Dalvik and Cache, not the sdcard.
I guess you're f**** with me though since I can't imagine someone with you're knowledge and "thanks" doesn't know what a factory data reset is lol.
Anyway, Fabric Reset needs to be an option
I found another solution on the 5X forums. After downgrading to N you need to lock and then unlock your bootloader again (wipes internal storage obviously). Worked for me. Clean install by itself didn't do anything to help.

I certainly don't enjoy being pathetic, and wouldn't say I was. You typed "Fabric Reset" so I thought you were messing around since I answered you earlier.. I appologize for the confusion man, the factory reset (going through Settings-Backup & Reset-Factory Data Reset) wipes the Data, Dalvik, and Cache, your internal will be completely preserved during a factory reset. However, your apps and app data will be wiped sorry again if I came off ignorant I just misunderstood you :good:

Definitely weird, did you try the factory reset before that with no success? I was thinking that locking/unlocking the bootloader probably does something similar to a factory reset since it wipes the device.

So my thanks observation was supposed to be a complement, I was trying to not insult your intelligence by either, answering a question I already answered, or answer a question you already knew. I was being sensitive.
Obviously us writing to each other completely lacks any form of human expression and tone, but try to actually read and understand before discrediting and insulting someone, especially while they're trying to help you.
